CHAPTER ELEVEN
He walked over to the centre of the room. I followed, planting myself in front of the large man.He opened the lid of the box.Inside was a row of five chains with pendants resting in identically shaped depressions. The third chain was slightly higher in the row than the other four. This gave the whole thing an odd sense of balance. The Director removed one chain from the box and handed it to me. On its pendent were two interlinking circles.I put it on.“Now what I'm about to teach you is called weapon summoning.”I remembered Wallace and Jennifer summoning their weapons. I also remembered Franny summoning her staff.“Just like driving, it might be tricky to grasp at first. But, once you get to master it, it will become as natural as breathing.”The Director set the box down on his desk.“Relax your hands.”I let my arms hang.“Okay, now close your eyes. Take in a couple of deep breaths and relax. Clear your mind and remove every thought or recognition of your surroundings. Ball your
CHAPTER TWELVE
When I left the Director's office, I stood outside his door for a while.I felt a distant but existent exhaustion. It felt like I had just come from a light jog. Summoning weapons wasn't as easy as it looked.I was in no particular rush to return to the Renchiology lecture. I figured that I was probably missing valuable knowledge of a visceral nature. But, I assumed that Mr. Kajulu would just think that I was still in the Director's office.I caught sight of Wish. She was in front of the board between the left entrance to the foyer and the recycling bin. She had what looked like a folded poster in her arm and a mouth full of drawing pins. When she saw me, she spat the pins into her left hand.“Hey Dave.”“Hey, you good?”I noticed then that she was a chain-user.“I'm good and you?”“Besides studying, I can't complain.”She flattened out the poster against the notice board and pinned it.That fragrance...It was as alluring as the first time I smelt it. It gave a much-needed burst of a

Her voice was a low monotone. It was devoid of life, just like her skin.“Hie.”She placed her hand on the book and tilted it slightly. Her fingers were long, white, and delicate.“Architecture?”“It was either that or putting myself at the mercy of the librarian.”“I see.”She retracted her hand and hid it beneath the desk.“My name is Raven”, she said, “What's yours?”Her name was perfect considering the colour of her hair and the clothes she was wearing.I told her my name.“Can you keep a secret David?”“Depends.”“It's nothing illegal, well, not really.”“Are you sure you want to trust a stranger with a secret?”, I asked, “I could be the world's biggest snitch for all you know.”“That's why I asked if you can keep one” she said, “Besides, aren't strangers just friends you haven't met yet?”Growing up, I tried by all means to avoid situations where I would have knowledge of vital or sensitive information. It's not that I was a loud mouth, it was just unnecessary pressure.Listen t

Another reoccurring dream. This one is not quite as frequent as the others, but way more terrifying.Human corpses carpet the charred ground around me...Blue, orange, and red carcasses of creatures I've never seen before...Invaders, mixed in with lifeless human bodies in mangled and twisted positions.A hot, putrid smell thickens the air and assaults my nostrils.A scream from my left.A man is being torn apart by a grey thing. It uses its razor-sharp talons to slowly tear his jaw and front torso from the rest of his body.A few meters ahead, a man is driving his spear into the throat of a jaundice-colored hunchbacked humanoid thing. The Invader lets out a phlegm-like gurgle, its dying breaths. Its feast on the insides of a woman with a sword in her pale hand is brought to a halt. The woman’s lifeless eyes are glued on me.An obsidian-colored vulture-like thing emerges from the thick black mist that blankets the battlefield. It floats in one spot, its large wings flapping loudly. It
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The week flew by.My summoning was still not battle-worthy, but there was a marked improvement in the formation of the weapons besides the Great-sword.They were becoming more tangible and visually correct with each session. The Director, however, still hadn't found any information concerning the axes.It was now the night of the dance. And that's when I met Raven again.A large tent that was similar to the ones used for outdoor wedding ceremonies was erected at the edge of the slope. The source of rhythmic hums and thumps stood a few meters shy from the teacher's quarters. Everything you'd expect to find at a dance party was there.Noisy EDM music blaring from the DJ's speakers on a raised wooden platform, various oily finger foods and bowls of punch, too many people in one place, and awkwardly positioned individuals within the shadows.Individuals such as Daniel, Dwayne, and myself.I tenderly sipped the spicy and slightly medicinal-smelling drink from the plastic cup in my hand. I

“Good morning class, sorry I'm late!"It never failed to amaze me how Ms. Hernandez was always late for the lecture. This was because she always walked like she had ants in her pants.“Alright then!” exclaimed Ms. Hernandez. She clapped her hands together.“I understand that we were about to move on to Barbarey Wexley and her contribution to the establishment of the Association's Headquarters", she said, “Am I right?”No one said anything.Someone coughed.“I'll take your silence as confirmation. Okay! Today I'm not in the picking mood, so I'll lead this one.”She ruffled through her books and papers. She picked up a thin text with aged covers barely held together by a cracked bind. She read from the book,“Now, the most interesting thing about Barbarey Wexley is by far her battle with sexuality. Wexley was born as Barbalee, a male in a small town in Australia. However, she claimed that she always felt like a female on the inside. At the age of seventeen, she decided to take action by

David...The voice fished me out of a deep sleep. But what I saw next convinced me that I may have been having a nightmare.Surrounding my bed, like macabre balloons, were floating eyes of varying sizes. None of them small enough to be considered human.Come...The largest eye began to float away as if pushed by a weak wind. The smaller eyes trailed after it.Involuntarily, I climbed out of bed and followed.I followed the eyes even though I screamed at my body to go back and pull the blankets over my head. I blinked aggressively, a trick that usually pulled me from nightmares. But this time, every time I opened my eyes; I was still descending the steps to the ground floor.Soon, I exited the Headquarters. In the thick starry night, I tried to reach for one of the eyes…but it withdrew itself from reach. They led me to the tree outside the Director's office.Look closer...I approached the tree and stopped a few inches from the trunk. I noticed that there was a rectangular rise on the b

I rushed to the bathroom before I made my way to the Renchiology lecture. The whole time, I cursed myself for asking such a stupid question.I never ask questions, ever, and when I do, I decide to correct a grammatical error? But that look...Mr. Kajulu was not in a particularly good mood that day.“Daniel!”“Huh? I mean yes sir!”“What are the different groups of Renchiology and their classes?”“What. Are. The. different classes, uhm...”“I didn't know I was lecturing a parrot; I want a 1000-word essay on the Climatic influence of the Otherside on the evolution of Renchi, due tomorrow.”Dan hung his head.Dwayne laughed."David! same question. "“Renchi are classed into three main groups. Fliers, walkers, and swimmers. Fliers are Renchi that can fly, walkers use their legs to traverse the ground, and swimmers inhabit water bodies. These three main groups are further classified into six classes. Class A, B, C, D, E, S and SS.”I had read about it in the library a few days before.“Even

As usual, the Director had already arrived. After training, which didn't feel quite as fulfilling as the other times, I headed over to the canteen. The spaghetti and mincemeat tasted bland. The orange soda tasted like flavored water, and the fizziness was misplaced, annoying. Daniel and Dwayne were on about something called Dead space and its steady decline throughout the trilogy. The tree had invaded my mind and set up indefinite residence. Images of it and the Director's badge shuffled in no particular order. I was slow to react when Daniel called me.“Wassup?”“You good man? You look like you got something on your mind.”“Not really, just tired. Didn't get much sleep last night.”“Yeah, Dwayne's masturbating sessions tend to do that to the newbies” said Daniel, “You'll get used to it though.”“Hey now, that's unwarranted.” Said Dwayne.“You do it like six times a night man, it's kinda hard not to point it out.”“You fucking voyeur, how do you know that?”“So it's true...” I said.“W

Soo Wong raised his hand."Yes?" said Mr.Hulio.“Isn't that thing too dumb to train on?” he asked.“Why do you say so? Have you ever fought one?”“I mean it's an A-rank.” chimed in Clarissa. She was a short and wide girl with thick blonde braids and a thick accent.Mr. Hulio smirked.“Okay then, why don't you and Clarissa show us how dumb it is then.”Mr. Hulio gave a mocking bow and gestured towards the simulation. They crossed the invisible threshold. It stretched and wobbled like electric jelly as they entered the ally way.The Klob imitated a crab walk before looking at the two in turn. Its curiosity evident even without a face.Clarissa summoned her bangles and punched her fists together. I'm not sure if this was in an attempt to intimidate the Renchi, but if it was, it didn't work.Soo Wong summoned his staff and swung it around flashily like those monks from the kung fu movies.Again, the Klob did simply stared at him.Soo Wong then decided to raise his staff and launch himself
