1. The Old book
“Hey! Don’t make a sound when you walk! Stupid criminal’s kid!”His steps came to a halt for a moment after hearing those words, but he simply sighed afterward.Shaden already knew that the clear sky he saw the moment he stepped outside was a bad sign for him.For his unfortunate life, the sunlight above seemed to laugh at him instead. And the event that the sun found worthy of laughing at took place inside the noisy classroom, which suddenly fell silent the moment Shaden stepped in. Shaden stayed alert. Though he walked straight ahead, he sharpened all five of his senses to locate the source of danger. But even with all that, misfortune was something absolute.SPLASHShaden froze as a bucket of water drenched the only uniform he had on this bright Monday morning. It was followed by a chorus of laughter from everyone there, some even shouting “Got him!” loudly—mocking the success of punishing the son of a criminal.“I told you, he’s stupid! No matter how many times we prank him, he st
2. The collapse of caste
"Do we really have to gather there? Wouldn't it be better if we went to the police station instead? After all, this isn’t something we can handle on our own. What happened earlier was...""Enough! Even if nothing makes sense, we just need to survive the best we can. Haven’t we already been given skills to help us make it through the next mission?"Shaden glanced at the two people talking to each other. They were from his school and were now walking toward the Department of Education to prepare for the second mission. What they said was true. After surviving the first mission, everyone was given the chance to choose two rewards. One reward consisted of a weapon, and the other was the choice of a sponsor who would later share their powers with the selected human. Each person was given three sponsor options. Shaden himself was offered three influential figures—people whose names were known for their discoveries or accomplishments during their lifetime."So, who did you choose? I think th
3. Second mission
"Basically, whether it's the world before or the one we're in now, there's no real difference. Only those who are competent and can think calmly will survive. So, you just need to follow me! I survived the first mission with ease, so the second and the ones after that won’t be a problem."Naturally, everyone who had survived and gathered inside the building had already formed their own groups, just as instructed by the giant monkey earlier.Shaden couldn't help but smile when he saw Leah sneer at the words of a man who, apparently, used to be her superior at work."He's still the same as ever. ‘Survived easily’, he says? I clearly remember how he was crawling and begging me to take him along when we were escaping," Leah grumbled.A soft laugh came from Ely. "You know how he is, yet you still helped him. If I were you, I wouldn’t have looked back. I would’ve let the rats eat him."Leah’s expression stiffened as she lowered her gaze. "I just couldn’t watch someone die right in front of
4. The Survivors
Shaden stared at the man who looked delighted, believing that his life would be saved just by holding the key. Meanwhile, Leah kept glancing at him, as if asking why Shaden remained silent when the man took his key. “Can’t we just kick that guy out now?” Leah whispered. Shaden shook his head. “If we kick him, the key might get thrown somewhere, and it’ll take more time to find it. So let him open the door first.” Just as Shaden said, even though she was clearly annoyed seeing her boss laughing while unlocking the door in front of them, Leah restrained herself for the sake of not messing up the mission. Shaden also remained calm, keeping an eye on the surroundings in case one of the man's teammates suddenly showed up to attack. “Did all your teammates die?” Shaden asked. The man clicked his tongue. “Those people were nothing but useless fools. How could they expect to survive in this ruined world if they couldn’t even protect themselves from those disgusting bats? I only needed
5. Territory
[The third mission will begin within the next 20 hours. Move to the city center immediately and find a place that can be made into a territory before the third mission begins!]That was the system message that appeared not long after the second mission was successfully completed. The city center could be reached in less than an hour on foot, considering any form of transportation was unusable under the current circumstances. However, seeing the twenty-hour window given solely as preparation time, Shaden considered something else. There had to be some kind of sub-mission that would occur during that period.“Do we only need to move to the city center? Thinking about how many tall buildings are there, it shouldn’t be too hard to determine a territory like the system said,” Ely asked. But ever since the world became like this, nothing had been easy. Even just searching for treasure inside a building, they had to face various kinds of dangers. Let alone if they had to be in an open area w
6. Three clan
"Aren’t we in trouble now?"Shaden turned to Leah who was sitting beside him. At the moment, they were inside one of the cubes Shaden had created. The other cubes, which appeared simultaneously, were immediately seized by people who didn’t have the coins required to enter the building. The commotion Shaden caused had clearly startled the gatekeepers. They had been confident that only their clan held unlimited access to the building, while others had to pay a set number of coins to gain entrance—just like Judy and Ely did.“That’s true. Pretty soon, the people inside the building are going to come out and see us. Naturally, they won’t take it well that they had to spend so many coins while others could create safe spaces for free. Of course, I’m referring to you and me. The others still had to pay to occupy those cubes.”Leah was surprised. “Pay? To whom?”“To the system. Because technically, only the person who created the cube can use it freely. If someone else occupies it, their coi
7. Battle
BUGH!A punch was thrown the moment the bell rang, imitating what Leah had done earlier. The difference was, this time it was Shaden who received the blow—and it was a hard one. Yet despite having a smaller build than his opponent, his body didn’t move at all. He blocked the punch using only one arm.Everyone was shocked. Shaden’s body was clearly smaller, a point that had made the fight seem unfair from the start. But they had all forgotten—this world could be altered and bought, as long as you had enough coins.“Did you sell that damned cube at a higher price so you could get more coins?” his opponent asked.Shaden wasn’t interested in answering. Instead, he moved swiftly and delivered a kick straight to the man’s stomach, sending him flying backward.“Boss!” the others shouted.Unexpectedly, one of the other leaders stepped forward the moment the first one fell from Shaden’s kick.“No! Shad!” Leah cried out from behind, unable to bear witnessing the injustice of their opponent’s ac
8. New Companion
“So it really does exist in the real world,” Shaden murmured. This wasn’t a story he had found in the fairy tale book his father had given him, but around the time he was nine years old, his father once told him about a dream he had—seeing people transform into a species no longer human after accidentally swallowing a mysterious pill they found.Back then, Shaden never believed something like that could actually happen, even in a world as broken as this one. After all, if it was a pill or some sort of drug, it wouldn’t just appear out of nowhere. He assumed it must have been created by humans, and his father’s dream had always sounded absurd. But now, he saw it with his own eyes—someone who had been completely human suddenly transformed into... whatever that was. Shaden wasn’t even sure what kind of creature he was looking at.“That crazy bastard! He didn’t throw away the pill!” the man Shaden had fought earlier shouted in shock. From that, it became clear that the man who had transfo
9. Midnight
"Please! Please make a cube for us! We don’t want to die! We beg you!""Please just take this child! Please save this child!"Shaden sat silently, eyes flat as he watched the people approaching his cube near midnight. They were the ones who had failed to obtain a cube or didn’t have enough coins to enter a building."Will all of them die?"The low-voiced question from Leah made Shaden glance at the woman beside him.But it wasn’t him who answered her. Instead, it was Tery—already getting ready for sleep—while many others remained panicked, anticipating midnight."That’s how the rules work. Not all of them will die. If they manage to survive out there while fighting off the monsters, they’ll actually grow stronger and gain new abilities. The real problem is that the monsters keep appearing all night until sunrise."In silence, Shaden observed Leah, who let out a deep sigh while lowering her head. It truly wasn’t easy to witness others dying right before your eyes."Shad, could you—""I
10. Third mission
“What is this?! Why is the mission like this? And what about the 5,000 coins we paid to stay safe through the night? Isn’t that way too expensive for just a single day?!”“My child! My child died because he couldn’t survive the insect attack! If only the clan leaders had allowed us to stay for just one night. If only!”“What now? How are we supposed to survive the parasite invasion? Had I known, I would’ve chosen to boost my strength instead of wasting money on room rent!”“They’re liars! They’re murderers!”Shaden calmly observed the chaos unfolding around him. The room that everyone believed would keep them safe in the city center only lasted for a single night. And yet, they had paid exorbitantly—some even going so far as to kill others for the chance to be admitted inside. Now, all their desperation and anger was being directed at the clans who had monopolized the buildings in the central city from the start.“At this rate, they’ll all be dead before the third mission even begins,
