Chapter 31. Demonic Cult.
'The Demon cult?'Rhok hesitated for a moment, just long enough for Liam to take the initiative and attack. He brought down his spiked mace with enough force to crush a man's skull.Rhok dodged in the nick of time, evading the attack as it landed on the ground. It sent tremors through the cavern, pieces of ice falling.Rhok was unsure of what to do, if these people were well aware of the Demon cult, then he couldn't kill them without extracting information from them. That was the tricky part. Especially Scar, who stood there with his ice spirit behind him.'How tiresome.'Another attack came from the side, this time, his daggers flashed in his hands, blocking the attack quickly before it could cause any damage to him.His breathing became laboured. He could see ice growing on parts of his body, making it extremely difficult for him to move.“Just give up!” Liam shouted, jumping up and delivering an overhead blow. Rhok was in a difficult situation, the ice growing the parts of his body
Chapter 32. Bonding.
Blood flowed from the clump of bodies onto the icy floors of the cavern, freezing before getting anywhere near Rhok. Still crouched in a corner, he sniffed at the air.It smelled wet with the scent of blood heavy in the air. He looked to his left and right, then closed his eyes, he expanded his shadow sense, looking, searching for anyone that may have escaped this onslaught. He opened his eyes and breathed out, standing up, he walked towards Scar, who was seemingly unharmed and protected by the surrounding ice. But he couldn't escape his mind control.A memory flashed through his mind, the bodies of pregnant women and dismembered body parts of humans, laid on an altar for some form of sacrifice. It has also been the time he had gotten the mind control ability, the problem with the skill was that it sapped him of his mental strength.“You can come out now, Liora" he whispered. The presence of another shadow welcomed itself into the cavern.“Are you okay? Do you need me to heal you?” Li
Chapter 33. Godhood..
Beyond the streets of Oldwickers, past the alleys and the shades where beggars abode themselves, past the forests and into the kingdom of Vryanthia. A certain noble gazed across the kingdom from where he stood, from the top of his castle.“What a delight… This world” he took a deep healthy breath, his red hair flowing with the wind.“It's so clean, so pure, the people here. So easy to use” he chuckled. He brimmed with excitement, the anticipation, and addiction to power he felt was astonishing.“I could use all of them and still get to greater heights. Unlike on earth where I was a mere tool to be used,” he cursed. He hated remembering his days as an assassin, he felt liberated here, and it gave him joy, and ecstasy. He took a sip of wine and twirled the cup around, the rich taste wasn't something he could ever get used to.A knock came from the door of his abode.“Come in” he straightened himself with inept composure."Lord Raphael…" the guard bowed his head to the floor in respect.
Chapter 34. Done Deal.
"You weren't meant to make it back alive" Ben took huge gulps from his mug, refilled it and had another. Looking past his brawny stature and veiny arms, he seemed like a more gentle person than Rhok had given him credit for. Although he could hardly see his lips moving with all the hair covering his chin."A day before you arrived, two men brought a sack of silver chips. They made a proposal which I couldn't refuse, to give the hardest mission available if a young man clad in black and a lady escort ever walked in here asking to be adventurers" Ben used the back of his hand to swipe the foam off his beard.Rhok sighed, settling into his cups, he was drained and tired, now more so than ever. Liora wasn't with him anymore, he had sent her to her room, just beside his. He still had more to speak with Ben on."And what about now?" He asked, feeling a growing anticipation. A bag of silver chips was a lot of money, all that just to get rid of me? Hadn't he considered his daughter's life?"T
Chapter 35. Shadow Monarch.
Cups clattered together as men sat around in circles, they cheered onto themselves as they drank themselves full of liquor, rum and anything considered manly enough to be ingested.By the side of the room, a man sat with a plate of food laid out before him, it was untouched as the man played with his fork, it seemed he had suddenly lost his appetite, as though the steamy aroma of the meat before him did little to entice him."Eat up!" Liora exclaimed. She had wolfed down her food and tried her best to not pick into Rhok's food, his meal looked delectable, roast pork belly with cinnamon spices and a cup of cold wine placed by his side. The dish also had a variety of fruits and vegetables but those were of no concern to Liora."Hmmm" Rhok stabbed his meal with his fork, playfully he toyed with the knife in his left hand, swirling it about for a moment before using it's sharp end to cut into the meat.He chewed on it slowly, trying his best to not think of the thoughts that pervaded his
Chapter 36. Mountain Bandits?
"Here you go", Ben handed out two silver ornaments to Rhok and Liora. Rhok looked at the ornament, it had three silver swords all crossed against each other like an asterisk. He held it up in the light, "But we're just starting" Rhok looked at Ben, expecting an answer. The big man shook his head slightly."You deserve it!" He sighed, finding a chair to sit down. "The mission you accomplished wasn't something that two bronze adventurers could handle, I doubt even two silver Adventurers could defeat Scar and bring back his head for all to see".Rhok nodded understanding the situation. He looked to his side, Liora seemed content enough with her new ornaments. Her's were exactly the same as his, with a rope attached to it so it could be worn on the neck."Also," Ben said pointing his hands at Rhok. " I'm sure you know how divided the kingdom is. Mere citizens aren't allowed to reach places that adventurers can, so always wear your silver blades...""Is that what you call them?" He sighed.
Chapter 37. Wastelands.
The lands of Ashen Wastes were an oddity, although in the North, Rhok felt none of the cold, or perhaps, was it his new skill that prevented him?He looked at Liora who seemed scared, she looked around. "I don't like this place at all, we should leave, go back and forget the gold" Her voice was weak and pleading but Rhok shook his head."It's not worth it. Why are you risking your life? Our lives for mere gold!!!" She raised her voice."It's not for the money Liora. People need us!" He spat back, although that was not truly his intention, he should have told her about his plans. But not yet, the time hadn't come."People....." She stopped herself and bit her lip. She murmured something and looked around in fear.Rhok watched her closely, feeling the need to console her, he had been the one to bring her out into this wasteland."We'll be fine, I promise," he said, "Besides, we're not going too far deep in, just at the foot of the mountains, by the valleys" he pointed, trying his best t
Chapter 38. Spiral.
Something was terribly wrong. That shadow, shape, gait, it all felt so wrong, unlike anything Rhok had ever seen.He hadn't noticed it at first, seeing the dismembered bodies of the villagers who gathered around, he expected the shadows that lay about to be in dishevel. Until he saw that monstrosity. He couldn't make sense of it, was it an animal, a beast, or perhaps a species that he had never seen before, in any case, the bloodlust coming from the monster was suffocating.Liora was about to say something, but he couldn't risk giving out their locations. There was still some light that leaked into the cave from the entrance, giving him leeway to hide and observe the beast. He simply couldn't understand its shadow. He held her mouth before she spoke, dragging her into a corner hidden in the shadows, he stayed there, his heart thumping wildly as he felt the presence approaching him. Each step sent vibrations through the entire cave, Rhok thought about how this kind of monster would exi
Chapter 39. The Spirit Mage.
The air suddenly changed!Liora felt it, she had tried her best to keep shut, felt the reverberations of Rhok's battle with the demon, she had seen him get beaten beyond compare, brutalized, broken and tossed about like a rag doll. She knew he had given up his life to save hers, she felt it in the command he had given her, yet she could do nothing against the barrier the demon had set up, nothing but watch her brother get beaten to death. But she wasn't sure what was going on.She was sure that Rhok's legs and arms had been broken by the demon, yet there he floated in the air, shrouded in complete darkness, so whole and complete it sent shivers down her spine. This was a power she had never felt before, nor was it one in which she could understand its depths. Encompassing, whole, complete. Yet so foreign and atrocious. This was deeper than the power the demon held, much more fearsome than anything any human had a right to own...Not even the saints of this world could boast of such st
Chapter 40. Prey on the Hunter.
"A spirit Mage?" Liora whispered, she had never seen one in her life, of course, she hadn't been allowed to go out much often, but being a Spirit Mage was even rarer than making a contract with a spirit.Yet one stood in front of her, unbelievable."Why hide yourself from my presence? Why not offer your aide to the ones you called here? Such insolence" Rhok turned with a frown on his face, although Eryn couldn't see it because she facing the ground with her head bowed."The spirits... They warned me... I couldn't defy them" she confessed."Defy them? You? Who is given the authority over them is bothered with such frivolities?" Rhok walked towards her, raising his hand up.Shadows surrounded Eryn, wrapping around her as a snake would its prey, squeezing her, attempting to squish her into a pulp."Please..." She cried out, choking and gasping for breath, but nothing changed."You dare... Risk his body? Bringing him to battle a demon? While you cower and hide in fear?" Rhok clenched his
