Chapter 41. Level Up.
Standing confused, his eyes darted between the two females that stood before him, then back to the demon. More than startled, he was perplexed.'What in tarnation had happened? The demon looked like it had been run through a meat grinder with just the bones to spare. And I did that?'"Me?" He poked at his chest. "You're crazy, you know that right?" He chuckled a bit, maybe the demon was already dying by the time they had found it, Liora probably weakened it with some spell while the other girl finished it off."You think I?... Would face that thing?" She pointed at it once more then poked Rhok's chest. "Deal with it, you had an insane power-up, something possessed your body and killed the demon almost instantly" She shrugged.'Insane power up?'He shook his head in disbelief."It's true" the odd girl spoke for the first time, bowing her head slightly."You were possessed by the Spectre of Death, it's a fragment that still remains" She bowed in respect towards Rhok."Hey now..." He sai
Chapter 42. I Spy.
The sun edged itself over the horizon, threatening to rob light from the world itself, but the streets in the Capitol just began brimming with life and excitement. Shops closed, vendors packed their belongings and fled for fear of losing their merchandise. While the pubs and bar opened in full swing, men rushed in packs as they told each other of their stories, the problems they encountered and the politics of the nation itself.Amongst the clamor, three figures walked in silence, their heads lay down as they walked tiredly through the streets. Rhok looked about, his feet were bruised from waking two days non stop, the frozen bundle in his arms had made them sore from carrying it all day. The other two girls didn't fare much better but more than anything. He had been on constant guard. Someone had been following them for the past two days. He wasn't sure who they were or why. His guess was that they were from the cult itself and we're tracking him down.If that was the case then he h
Chapter 43. Duel.
The man who stood before Rhok backed up by a few meters, he reached for his blade and drew it, levelling it at Rhok."How did you find me?" He asked calmly.Rhok shrugged, although he doubted the man would be able to see his facial expression in the dark of the night."How else, I can't be spied upon. And you made it a bit too obvious" he lied."Impossible. I made sure to hide myself from yours or anyone's detection abilities" he cried out, taking a few steps back.'He's that good huh?' Rhok sighed."Alright, I'm tired, out with it. What do you want?" Rhok asked the young man tiredly, although he couldn't see the man's face, he knew the man was quite powerful. He was a head taller than Rhok, which was actually pretty tall for a human being. The man sidestepped, walking in a half circle, trying to gauge Rhok who still rested on the wall he had appeared from."Alright. You've been following me for quite a while. You know just how tired I am, I need to sleep. So let's get this over with
Chapter 44. Friend or Foe.
Leaves fell in the courtyard just across the bar where Rhok happily spent his time. Staying in the Silver Blades Guild had become something he was getting accustomed to. It's not like he had another choice as to where else he could go.So he happily spent his day lazying about, Liora had someone else to talk to. The Spirit Mage. Although he wasn't sure what that entailed exactly she seemed happy enough to talk about spells and whatnot with Eryn. That gave Rhok the peace of mind he always wanted, except something ruined this precious moment for him.Standing in the courtyard, looking directly at him was Dian. The man who he had battled the night before, he hadn't given up and still wanted to talk with Rhok for Lord knows what.'What the hell mate? I need to sleep!' He cursed inwardly, but unfortunately, Rhok knew the kind of man that he was, the kind to never relent till he got exactly what he wanted. And in this case, it was Rhok.'Sighs.'Rhok finished the mug of wine that rested on
Chapter 45. Darrell.
"An interesting young man that you've brought here. Wouldn't you say so, Ben?" The wizened old man turned to look at Ben, then back to Rhok."How odd. I haven't seen or heard of you before your arrival" Darrell looked at Rhok with an intense gaze.Rhok unknowingly took a few steps back the way he had come from, his back hit the wall. He turned, surprised. Hadn't a door been there a few moments ago?"Running away are we?" Darrell asked."Aahh. Of course not, I just needed to scratch my back on the wall" Rhok stuttered.Darrell laughed lightly. "Very well then. I'm sure you know why you're here", he gave Rhok a questioning glare."The... demon head?" Rhok asked.Darrell's face instantly grew serious. "How did you do it?" Darrell asked, letting his arms rest at his sides. Although he still sat down, the air in the room quite literally shifted.Rhok felt slightly suffocated."I... I don't know, I'm not sure..." Rhok said truthfully. 'Of all people to suspect me. It just had to be someone
Chapter 46. Agreement.
For the first time in Darrell's life, it could be said that he was rendered blind. Not that it really mattered to him anyway. He chuckled for a moment, then heard the whimpering sound made by Ben.It was curious to him, he waved his palms just before his face and still couldn't see it. This wasn't just the absence of light. This was true darkness."Hmmm. This is indeed a first, you may take down your veil" Darrell commanded.Immediately, light flooded his eyes, making him squint for a few moments before he could see again. Rhok stood there grinning teeth to teeth."I'll admit, it is indeed a nefarious power, but not something that can't be dealt with. But, if it's with this, then I understand how you were able to defeat a bunch of goblins even at the tender age of... How old were you?" Darrell asked."Six""Six?" Darrell's eyes widened. It wasn't the first time that someone had awakened their man's cores at a tender age, but it was rather rare. It happened to a selected few with the p
Chapter 47. Party Forming.
"Uuhhm, are you okay Boss?" Dian walked over to where Rhok had landed."Boss? What am I? Your employer? And why does that word even exist in this world?" Rhok cursed as he righted himself. He looked up at Dian. "How long has it been since I left?" He asked curiously."About... ten minutes? Yeah I think so" Dian admitted, Rhok sighed. He couldn't guess what exactly the old man's powers were. At first it seemed like spatial manipulation, but it could have well been teleportation magic, or something else.Just then, Liora and Eryn walked down the stairs, it seemed they were coming down from their rooms. Upon seeing Rhok, they both smiled and walked over to him."Why are you sitting on the table? And where have you been?" Liora asked, Eryn kindly nodded her head in respect.Rhok rolled his eyes. "Nothing too serious, I was teleported to the capitol and back. Also, there's a change of plans." Rhok sighed."Teleported?" Dian looked at him in surprise, then back to the counter where he had
Chapter 48. Summon at Dark.
The knocking came at a time when the tavern was beginning to settle into the quiet of the evening. The heavy oak door to Rhok's room sounded with heavy thuds.Rhok looked at the door with a sour gaze, "It better be who I think it is..."He opened the door to find Ben standing there, the head and owner of the tavern, also the second in command of the Silver Blade Guild. Ben’s worn cloak was dusted with dirt from gods know where, and beneath his furrowed brow, sweat trailer from his face."Back so soon Ben? Did the spirits come to haunt me or has Darrell sent you to abduct me again” Rhok asked, stepping out and stretching his legs and back.Ben gave a half smile, but his eyes were sharp, glinting with the weight of news. “Neither, though Darrell has taken a new interest in you,” he said, producing two heavy leather sacks that clinked with the unmistakable sound of coins. “He calls you... intriguing. Said you’ve got more potential than most.”Rhok arched an eyebrow, Ben had got gotten hi
Chapter 49. Dawn's Hunt.
At the very first light of dawn, when the sky was still painted in shades of purple and gold, Rhok was already standing outside the tavern, leaning against the weathered wooden frame like he owned the place. His cloak hung loose, and the cold morning air slapped at his face, but he didn’t seem to mind. Honestly, he looked more annoyed at how early the day had started than anything else.“Seriously, who decided that dawn was a good time to be anywhere but asleep?” Rhok muttered to himself, though he knew better than to complain too loud, but there was work to be done.Minutes later, Liora appeared from the shadows of the doorway, a smile on her lips. “Oh, you’re awake. I was worried you’d actually overslept for once.” She stepped out, boots scrubbing on the stone, her eyes already sharp with anticipation.Rhok just rolled his eyes. “Please, I’m a creature of habit. A grumpy, stubborn creature of habit.”Eryn and Dian weren’t far behind. Eryn’s long golden hair was still a little messy
Chapter 50. Blood and Bargain.
Dawn bled across the sky in streaks of rust and gold as Rhok rolled his shoulders, the weight of his axe a familiar comfort. Around him, the others stirred, Liora stretching like a cat, Eryn rubbing sleep from her eyes, Dian already sharpening his blade with methodical strokes. The boy, Talin, hovered near Rhok’s elbow, his fingers knotted around the helm of his cloth."You’re really taking me back?" Talin’s voice was small, still raw from yesterday’s terror. Rhok flicked the kid’s forehead. "Unless you’d rather stay here as monster bait." Liora snorted, slinging her pack over her shoulder. "He’s got a point. You’re basically walking bag of meat to those things." The trek to the village was short but tense. The forest thinned into patchy farmland, the earth filled with claw marks and dark stains that weren’t mud. The walls of the Glades rose ahead, jagged logs grew together. Before long, they reached the outskirts of the village where Talin came from. A sentry spotted them and s
