“Fuck everything. Max out your credit card. Rent a downtown hotel. Hit every spot the big guns know. Ten million dollars on dinner. Go insane. She’s your wife!” the blog screamed at him. Charles stared at the screen. Bloggers’ creativity on steroids. Some people were born to ruin birthdays. This one? Definitely a contender. The time read 12:13 a.m. on the nightstand. His wife hadn't shown up in their bedroom. Obviously, as you might tell from the fact that his wife wasn't in bed at this odd hour, they were no longer in the honeymoon stage of marriage. Did they even have a honeymoon? Charles padded to the sitting room, expecting to find Emmy curled up with a throw blanket, maybe scrolling through the social media. But the couch was empty. Her wine glass sat abandoned—still half full. Waste of a good Malbec. Her phone lay face-down beside it. "Emmy?" he called softly. Silence. He checked the back door. Locked. Kitchen. Empty. The lights upstairs were off—all except one. The gue

Charles reached for the handle. She grabbed him from behind, nails digging through his shirt. "This is all your fault!" she hissed in his ear. "If you were the kind of man I needed, I wouldn't have gone looking elsewhere." Ah yes. The classic 'you made me cheat' defense. He should add that to his collection of greatest hits. Charles turned slowly. "Are you listening to yourself right now?" "No one's going to care about your stupid pictures," she said, voice rising with desperate confidence. "Not the police. Not my parents. Roger owns half this neighborhood. You think anybody's going to take your side against him?" Charles stared at her for a long moment, then let out a soft, humorless laugh. Emmy's expression shifted, suddenly sweet as artificial honey. She placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Let's talk this through like adults. Sit down, breathe. I'll make your favorite—beef stroganoff. Remember how much you used to love it?" Used to. Past tense. Everything about them is pas

_____Bar_____Charles lit another cigarette. He took a long drag as he stared at the picture on his phone. A man on his wife. What hurt him the most? No. He's not hurt. He shook his head. Only weak people get hurt. He's just mad. He's mad at this woman—mad at her for making him waste his two years vacation on her and her damn family. And he would never forgive her. The same woman that had never allowed him to have sex with her since they got married. It was either she complained of him being too hungry for sex like a dog or made some sarcastic statement about being tired. “Hey, what are you staring at?” A voice across his table called him out of his thoughts. He raised his head to see a woman—she didn't exactly look like a woman. Too young. Her hair was packed in a ponytail. She flashed him a seductive smile. “I have been sitting here for the past five minutes.” “What do you want?” She looked around as if checking to see if anyone was watching them. “Sleep with me. I'm a virg

“I must commend your boldness.” While she was still talking a blue Rolls-Royce pulled in front of them.“My driver is here. Give me your number so we can discuss,” she said. Charles glanced at the car. She is rich and she is behaving like this? Now that she was standing up and her hair no longer in a ponytail, she didn't look like a middle schooler but that wouldn't change his perspective about her. “Hello?” She waved her hand in his face. “What do you need my number for?”“You must never mention anything you saw this evening to anyone.” Charles scoffed. “I had no intention of doing that.” Another frown flashed across Sadie's face. The man looks humble and he is talking to her like he'd to a normal person. Annoying yet amusing. “I'll still need your number though. By the time this gets in the news, you will be nowhere to be found.”“News? Do I look like a reporter? Even if I do, I can't cover cheap news like this.” Sadie scoffed. Is this man pretending not to know who she is or

Charles laughed, bitter and low. "Business partner? That's what you're calling it now?”“Wasn't it a business meeting? Didn’t you see the laptop and documents when you came in?” Emmy fired, eyes flashing with anger at Charles’s shocked expression.“Mom, you should’ve seen how Charles embarrassed me last night,” she continued, voice dripping with bitterness. “Mr. Roger stormed out in anger. It was humiliating, hearing that he had… other intentions. You know Mr. Roger, right? Mom?”“How could you?” Charles’s mother-in-law shouted, fists clenched. “After everything my daughter has sacrificed for you, this is how you repay her? I won’t let this slide. You will pay for this.”“I managed to apologize to Mr. Roger yesterday,” Emmy said, her voice now low and defeated, “but I’m not sure he’ll want to continue the partnership.”Roger couldn’t help but smile quietly. This was turning out to be more entertaining than he expected. “I’ll start the divorce papers and have them ready before the day

—---At the Daryl's restaurant---Charles can't believe he agreed to this ridiculous thing. He is putting on a brand designed cloth that is worth millions of dollars and chewing gum like a total playboy. His job was simple—at least that was what the owner of the Tyrell Williams group said. The man had a daughter but the daughter had been going on a date with a very ruthless man of the underworld whose only mission was to bring the family business down. Now where did he fit in the drama? He just had to flirt with the man's daughter and rescue the clueless daughter from the ruthless man. Any man could have played this part but according to the owner of the Tyrell Williams group, the other men who had tried it in the past few months disappeared all of a sudden. As Charles entered the restaurant, he switched his walking step to one with some swag. Not difficult, really. He was a playboy before he got married to Emmy. He chewed recklessly on the bubble gum in his mouth as he approache

“Does that mean I can have her?” Charles further twisted Lainey's boyfriend's hand. If he twisted it a inch further, the man would end up with a broken arm. “You can! You can!” Charles let it go. “Thanks.” He walked back to Lainey like nothing just happened. He held out his hand to her. “Shall we go on our first date?” Still not believing all that was happening, Lainey reached out her hand to Charles. For the first time in her life, she was seeing someone who could deal with her boyfriend without making an effort. As they left, Lainey's boyfriend swore under his breath to deal with Charles at all costs. Outside, Charles smiled at the woman. He wanted to continue flirting with her but seeing no need for that, he shut his mouth. He wasn't ready to get into any relationship and he didn't plan to in the future.“Thank you so much, sir,” Lainey's father said, getting out of the car. Lainey snapped her head toward the voice. “Dad?” Her father looked at her with a sigh. “If you don'

He pushed through the crowd until he made it to the front.Roger was on one knee, right there in front of Emmy.“Will you be my date?” Roger asked.Emmy blushed. Beaming, she stretched out her hand, and Roger slipped the ring onto her finger.“He’s so romantic!”“I wish I was Emmy.”“They’re so cute!”“When will someone propose to me like that?”Just before Charles could reach the gate and leave it all behind, he saw it. The kiss. Emmy clung to Roger like her life depended on it, like she had something to prove. While they were married, Emmy barely let Charles touch her. A hug—only when her father was around. And even then, it felt like a favor. He respected that. Gave her space. Thought maybe, just maybe, she’d open up someday.Turns out, none of it ever meant anything.“Hey,” he heard a woman's shout. The voice was familiar to the voice of the woman he met last night. He continued walking. “Man in black jacket and earring,” the woman shouted again. He still didn't stop. He had

“Later,” Charles quickly said. “Alright. I'll call you later.” Charles let out a breath of relief after ending the call. For now, he was covered. But really, he'd never understand why his godfather wanted him to have a kid. He was not even ready to be a father. The thought of it scared the shit out of him. “Sir?” A man in a suit bowed in front of Charles. “Miss Sadie said to tell you that the car is waiting over there.” He pointed at a tinted black BMW. Charles strode to the car. Time to know what the woman wanted from him. She seemed too sensible for the way she was behaving last night. He entered the car and the driver soon started driving. “Thanks to you I had to sign seventy autographs on my feet.” She drank from a bottle of water. “I wasn't the one who asked you to follow me all around.” She darted a glare at him. “So, what do you want from me? I'm more busy than this.” She accessed him. “What do you do for a living?” “Is that any of your business?”“Compared to the w

Charles looked at his reflection in the mirror as he drove the Toyota Camry Sadie bought for him. They almost had a fight over it. She was going to buy him a Rolls-Royce but what the fuck was he supposed to do with it? Even without using some extraordinary cars, a few important people in Atlanta recognize him. What'd happen if he now used an expensive car? And he'll admit, he'd never been more pissed off than he had been since he met Sadie. She would always do something to get on his nerves. Like this morning… “You have to start working here,” she had tossed a card on the table. “No, thanks.” “One way or the other, I'm going to be forced to tell people that you are my husband, what will I tell them you do for a living?” And that way, she forced him to get out of bed and now here he is, driving to start working as a CEO in some company he is not interested in. He pulled into the gate of the company. He parked in the garage and came out of the car. Just to piss her off in
