CHAPTER 41
AN AWKWARD MEETING It was 3 pm on the dot. Ethan got out of his car in the parking lot of a fancy restaurant in the downtown. He got out of the car and walked towards the entrance of the building. He was dressed casually, like always, in a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and a cap – nothing fancy. That was his style of dressing, as he always wanted to look normal The day was about to end, and he was on his way to meet Emily, his last thing to do for the day. He had gotten to the restaurant at the exact time he was given. When he entered the restaurant, he was greeted by the rich camaraderie and the serenity of the place, with only high-profile people seated, dining casually. Although he attracted a few stares and glances with his dressing, he ignored them and walked further, scanning around to find Emily. Emily was seated in the corner staring at her phone. Ethan immediately walked towards the table she was seated at. When he got to the table, Emily raised her head at the same t

TRUTH ABOUT THE ENCOUNTER Ethan smiled for the first time since the meeting and nodded. He took another sip from his juice. “For your first question, I would say it's quite complicated. So the answer is 'yes' and 'no'. I was not a doctor before I went in but came back as a doctor. Anyways, I am not a medical doctor and have not had formal training in modern medicine. I practise alternative medicine and ancient medical techniques. To your second question. I guess you know the answer. And yes, I did that. But it has all ended now. We are divorced, and each of us has moved on with their lives. The details I cannot give out since it is a legal matter.” Ehan said blatantly, refusing to go into the details of the event. Emily nodded. She had started her meal and would pause occasionally to talk or to listen to what Ethan was saying. “So if you say you have all moved on with your life. I understand, but what I don't understand is why you showed up to the event to e

THE BITTER REALITY “I admire your interest in investing, but I don't think it will be a good idea for you. You just came out, and you are starting life from scratch. I believe you should get everything in order before the investments. I honestly mean no offense… ‘…But if you still want to go ahead, I will send you a copy of our share prices and the return on investment as well as all there is to know about them later this evening,” Emily said. Ethan gave a faint smile and nodded. He was surprised at how much Emily had underrated him, thinking he was a poor man. “Well, I am not that rich, but I guess I can manage to buy something. I will be waiting for the message. Anyway, I have to go now,” Ethan said. He quickly signalled the waiter to bring the bill to the blind side of Emily while she chewed on a mouthful of food. Emily looked up. “Okay, Doctor Ethan. Thank you so much for honouring my invitation and coming over,“ Emily said. The waiter brought the bill and handed it straig

BOLDNESS IN THE FACE OF THE CONSEQUENTIAL STORM THE NEXT MORNING. Ava and Jake sat in their car, driving towards Emily’s office. Ava was driving, and as they drove, they were discussing the answers they were going to give to Emily’s questions. Jake was a little nervous but suddenly seemed all unconcerned about whether or not they were going to get the contract. Jake noticed that she was acting nonchalant but did not say anything, thinking it was her way of handling the anxiety, or maybe she was sure they were going to get the contract and so seemed not bothered. At exactly 10 am, they drove up to the premises of the head office of the Winsor Group. The two got down, Ava holding a brown envelope with some files in it. They went to the reception, and after identifying themselves, a security guard escorted them to the conference room. The meeting was supposed to start at exactly 10:10 am, and they got to the conference room five minutes early. Emily was not in, and Mr David was

A CONVINCING SPEECH Mr David continued speaking. “Suppliers of raw materials to the company have not been paid, have stopped supplying the materials, and now production is down. However, all of these were not known to us, because they were not parts of the reports the owners submitted.…” He said, pausing briefly, and then turned to look at Ava. “...Ms Ava, do you mind explaining what is going on?” Mr David concluded. Ava's face went pale when she heard her name. She was not yet done cooking up what she wanted to say, but had to bring something forth. She turned to look at Jake, who had his head bowed, embarrassed at what was happening. Ava stood up, cleared her throat, and began speaking. “Thank you for giving us the chance to explain what was going on. We, under normal circumstances, would not lie about any of the things we said or the business information we provided. We told the truth perfectly. First, the number of workers in the company is now fifty-three in total. Ye

A CINEMATIC PERFORMANCE Ava comforted herself and stood up from the seat. She went into full-blown mode, coupled with emotional blackmail, and anything that could enter her head at that moment. “Dear esteemed members of the board. These issues are mere allegations. Even before my ex-husband, Ethan, was going to jail, we were already battling over the divorce. I had even initiated the divorce contract before he was sentenced, and even when he was sentenced, I went in there multiple times to visit him, just so he could sign the documents and I could be free. However, my ex-husband was refusing to sign the divorce papers, denying me my ability to go about my life as a single woman. I started dating Jake years after Ethan went to jail. All the while, I was visiting him to get him to sign the document so I could be free, but he never did. I am a woman, and I know I can't be tied down by a single man who had refused to let me go while he was in jail for committing murder. I cannot

BUSINESS IS BUSINESS “Phew. Now that was a great escape from the mouths of those people. As of now. I strongly believe we will get the contract no matter what happens,” Jake said with a smile on his face. “Definitely. We will get it.” Ava said with a smile as she took out her phone. The two drove happily, proud of themselves for being able to put up a good show and debunk what Ethan had caused and what Emily had investigated They drove out of the premises of the ‘WINSOR HEIGHTS’ While they drove on the highway, Jake felt more relaxed than ever. “Finally, I now have hope that everything is in order. I now feel good that everything is getting back on track. Had it been for only Ethan, we would have been in shambles by now,” Jake said with a smirk. He grinned loudly. “Have you heard anything about him again?” Ava asked him. Jake shook his head in the negative. “No, I haven't. My private investigator has vowed not to work for me anymore until I pay his arrears. As it

HAVE A NICE TIME Immediately they got home, they both went into the bedroom, with joy. Jake opened a mini fridge and took out some wine. He poured it into two glasses, set some music to be playing softly in the background, and the two set out to a happy evening, laughing and sipping from their wine. Jake stood in front of Ava with a smile on his face. “You are a wonderful woman by all standards, and you proved that again today. Thank you for doing what you know how to do best,” Jake said softly into her ears. Ava blushed, and before long, the two were in a deep kiss. They had dropped their wine glasses and were kissing passionately, the soft music in the background creating a romantic atmosphere for them. After a few seconds of deep kissing, their hands found themselves on each other's bodies, unconsciously undressing themselves. A few seconds later, they were both naked, on their bed. Their clothes were spread haphazardly on the floor. Ava lay on her back, staring up at Ja

EAGER FOR A DECISION***************Monday Morning, 8 am, Ava's Residence.Ava was busily dressing up, getting ready to go out.Jake was sitting on the bed with his phone, operating it frantically.“Any news yet?” He said as he looked up.“Nothing yet. Let's wait till noon. I'm sure we will get a response by then. In the meantime, let me go and take care of the place. Any news that comes, I will let you know,” Ava said.Jake nodded. “I might also be going out later to check on my people, but I will need a confirmation from the response first, so just let me know in case of any emergency,” Jake said.“Okay. Is the driver here? . I'm already running late,” Ava said, turning around to face him.Jake shook his head in the negative.“Not yet. From the map, he should be here in exactly three minutes, so maybe you can start going to the gate,” Jake said as he looked at his phone. “ Alright then. I will see you later. Maybe we will even celebrate tonight,” Ava said with a smile as she lean
