CHAPTER 81
SCOTT'S GUEST HOUSEScott’s car pulled into the driveway just after midnight. The night was heavy with silence, broken only by the soft sound of the engine as he parked and stepped out. He moved to the passenger side and opened the door, carefully gathering Lisa into his arms. Her head lolled gently against his chest, her breath slow but steady...still under the drug’s influence.Scott tightened his grip protectively around her. He didn’t know this woman very well, barely more than a name and a face, but something about tonight had made her his responsibility.Once inside, Scott kicked the door shut and carried her to the bedroom. He laid her gently on the bed, brushing a strand of hair from her face before adjusting the pillows to make her comfortable. For a brief moment, he simply stood there, watching her sleep. Her brows were slightly furrowed, as if she were still trapped in a distant nightmare. He’d seen this kind of fear before—in the eyes of people who had narrowly escaped so

BENJAMIN'S HOUSE Benjamin’s voice thundered through the spacious living room, reverberating off the high ceilings and floors.“Where the hell are they?” he barked, standing beside the bar, his wine glass untouched on the table. His jaw was clenched so tightly that the veins on his neck pulsed with restrained anger. “I sent your men to track Scott—Scott, a man who shouldn’t even be able to walk in the open without someone spotting him since they have his picture—and you’re telling me no one has reported back in days?”The thug standing in front of him, a tall man in his early forties with a shaved head and anxious eyes, shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He wiped his palm against his jeans. “Boss, I… I’ve been trying to get in touch with them. None of their numbers are going through. I even sent out word in the usual corners, talked to guys who know our routes. Nothing.”Benjamin’s eyes narrowed. “You’re telling me you lost every single man I sent after him? Every one of t

GALE'S HOUSE Laura stood in the living room, arms crossed, staring at Gale as he poured himself a drink from the crystal decanter on the side table. His movements were slow. She knew that was his way of telling her he wasn’t in the mood for whatever she had come to say. But she had to say it anyway.“Gale,” she began. “I think… maybe we should at least reconsider meeting with Scott.”Gale didn’t even turn around. He poured the amber liquid into his glass and took a sip, then set it down. “Reconsider?” he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Laura, we’ve been through this. There’s nothing to reconsider. That man doesn’t get a seat at my table.”She took a deep breath, forcing herself not to snap. “I know you don’t like him—”“I don’t like him” Gale cut in sharply, turning to face her now. “and I don’t trust him.”Laura hesitated. He was already getting defensive, but she couldn’t stop now.“Listen to me. I don’t like him and I don't trust him either,” she admitted, taking a few ste

SCOTT'S GUEST HOUSE Lisa was already up before the sun was fully out. She had tossed and turned for a while, her mind wouldn’t stop running circles around everything that had happened so far. She needed something, anything, to distract herself.Eventually, she slipped out of bed, grabbed the hoodie Scott had lent her last night, and padded quietly down the stairs. The faint smell of coffee hung in the air. She followed it and found Scott sitting on the couch in the living room, remote in hand, and his eyes on some morning talk show.He noticed her and turned his head slightly.“You’re up early,” he said, his voice still sounding rough, indicating that he woke up not too long ago. “How’re you feeling?”Lisa managed a small smile. “I’m fine. A lot better, actually. Slept like a log.”Scott studied her for a moment, probably trying to read if she was telling the truth, then gave a small nod. “Good to hear.”Lisa rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly. “Uh… I was wondering if I could take

When the call ended, Scott slid the phone back into his pocket. He needed to get ready, but there was one small problem—Lisa was still here, and he couldn’t just leave her alone. He was halfway through thinking about what to do when the front door opened.Leah stepped in, her shoulder bag slung casually over one arm. She kicked off her shoes at the entryway, brushing a strand of hair from her face as she looked up.Her eyes landed on him instantly. “Well, you’re standing there like you’ve been waiting for me. Should I be flattered or concerned?”Scott raised a brow. “Neither. Relieved, maybe.”Leah’s lips curved into a faint, amused smile. “Relieved? That’s not the usual greeting I get from you. What’s going on?”“Well, look at that,” Scott said with a hint of relief. “Perfect timing.”Leah tilted her head suspiciously, crossing her arms. “Perfect timing for what? And don’t say it like that—you’ve got that tone in your voice. The one you use when you’re about to rope me into something

The front door shut behind Scott with a thud, and the sound of his car starting drifted in through the living room window. Leah stood there for a second, hands on her hips, staring at the space where her brother had just been. She exhaled in a long, theatrical sigh. “Of course,” she muttered under her breath. “Perfect timing, Leah, perfect timing.”She padded barefoot into the kitchen. “Might as well feed myself if I’m gonna be babysitting,” she said to nobody in particular. She yanked the fridge open, scanning its contents. “Milk… eggs… leftover takeout… yeah, eggs win.”As she pulled out a carton, she glanced toward the ceiling, listening for any movement upstairs. The faint sound of running water came from upstairs.“Still in the bathroom,” Leah mumbled. “Probably still in the shower, Perfect. That gives me a chance to make breakfast for us.”Upstairs, Lisa stood in front of the mirror, toweling her damp hair. She hated the idea of staying here any longer than necessary because s

MR. DAVID'S OFFICE Scott pushed open the door to David’s office and stepped inside, shaking off the light drizzle from outside. David was already there, sitting behind his desk with his reading glasses perched low on his nose, going through a stack of papers.“Scott,” David greeted warmly, glancing up from what he was doing with a faint smile. “Right on time,” he added. “Come in.”Scott walked in and shut the door behind him. David stood, offered his hand, and then gestured to the chair across from him.“Have a seat.”Scott dropped into the leather chair with a sigh, running a hand through his hair. He looked tense, jaw tight. He hated the idea of sitting in the same room as Gale for more than a second.David leaned back slightly in his chair, his eyes narrowing as he studied Scott's expression. “ What's with the look, Scott?”Scott didn’t waste time. “I don’t like this, David. Not one bit. This whole meeting with Gale—it doesn’t sit right with me. My gut’s screaming at me that he’s

BENJAMIN'S HOUSE Benjamin descended the narrow basement with his hands deep in the pockets of his black trousers. He reached the bottom and paused for a moment, standing before the heavy steel door. The air down here was cooler, dense, and tinged with the metallic scent of blood and the faint stench of sweat. Two of his men stood guard at the entrance. One of them straightened immediately. “Boss,” he said, in a low and respectful way. He then reached for the latch.Benjamin didn’t even look at him. He simply nodded once, and the man swung the door open.Inside, the basement had a single overhead light that swung from a chain. In the center of the room sat a metal chair, bolted to the floor. The man in the chair — the one Benjamin had once trusted to find Lisa — was barely recognizable. His swollen face was a mess of cuts and bruises, one eye swollen completely shut and his split lips had dried blood on it. His shirt hung in tatters, soaked through and fresh blood ran down from a wo

SCOTT’S GUEST HOUSEThe sound of the front door opening made both women turn their heads.Scott stepped into the living room. He looked calm, though there was a trace of tiredness in his eyes.Leah’s face lit up instantly. “Hey, you’re back!” she said brightly, in a light tone.Scott’s gaze flicked from Leah to Lisa. He gave Lisa a small nod. “Lisa.”Lisa returned the nod politely, offering the faintest smile. “Scott.”Leah straightened and pushed herself up from the couch with a little bounce. “I was just about to… uh…” She glanced toward the kitchen and waved her hand vaguely in that direction. “Do something. I’ll, uh, just… leave you two to talk.”Lisa glanced at her. “You don’t have to leave.”“Oh no, it’s fine,” Leah said quickly, shooting Lisa a knowing and playful look. She wanted Scott and Lisa to talk freely. She didn't know how they would say their goodbyes but she didn't want them to hold back because of her. “I’ve been hogging all the conversation anyway.” She grinned bri

LISA'S HOUSE Lisa pushed her key into the lock and opened the door. Immediately she opened the door, her eyes swept across the room and instantly saw that her place was a mess. Not just messy from neglect, not like she had forgotten to clean up before leaving. This was deliberate. The couch cushions were ripped apart, the stuffing spilled on the floor. Drawers had been yanked out entirely and overturned. The small coffee table she had once carefully placed in the center of the room was tipped on its side, one of the legs cracked at an angle. Even the picture frames on the walls had been knocked down, their glass shattered across the floor. For a moment she simply stood there in the doorway, her fingers still around the doorknob, staring in disbelief at what used to be her space.“Benjamin…” she muttered under her breath.Of course it was him. Who else would do something like this? Who else had both the motive and the lack of restraint to ransack her home like it was some crime scene
