The turning point
Chapter 11Asher wandered in the dim street of ITHACA, hands burried in his coat pocket, his eyes lost in the crack of the pavement. He had convinced himself that eventually, he'd pull himself together, find the strength and go back home to his father and only sister, Jessica. But months passed, he was still the same broken man. The one Ava had left behind without a backward glance. What was he supposed to do now? Go back to his father, the same man he'd looked in the eye and said No to him with pride? How could he face those eyes again, knowing he'd been wrong? Knowing the same woman who gave him so much confidence to defy his father had betrayed him at the end.So many questions but yet, not a single answer to help Asher get better anywhere."Hey man" A voice came from behind followed by a tap on his shoulder. But Asher didn't turn, because his thoughts weighed too heavily on him. "Come on, man, time to go home"The voice said again, firmer this time. And slowly, Asher glanced s
The hit
Chapter 12While inside the car with the spy beside him and of course the driver, whose attention was glued on the road.He was fidgeted with the hem of his shirt, eyes darting from the rearview to the young man sitting next to him. What if it was actually not what it seemed? What if the people in the car with him is not who they claimed to be? The endless what ifs, got him feeling even more restless.Suddenly his eyes met with the driver's in the rearview. He paused a second, turning to look at the one seated beside him."Are you alright, master?"The one next to him asked. Asher could not say a word, he wasn't sure what it was but the whole situation felt off.Why would a father whom he disobeyed and flouted his orders, be so concerned with what happens in his life, after he moved out from his sight?"Master...?" He repeated, seeing the uneasiness plastered all over Asher's face. "You look hungry," he said. "Do you want us to drop by and...""N...No...Please, I want to..."Asher q
The past lay still
Chapter 13"Hi, my name is doctor William. May we know...""Save it" Mr Robert interrupted him as he stood right at the door entrance, his hand trembling while holding the knob. Who was the creature his eyes just took in of? Was that Asher? The son whom he thought would never cross his part after his departure?No...He shook his head slowly slumping to the floor when the doctor beside him hurried and held him in his arm while gently making him sit on the bed next to Asher.Mr Robert tried to get a grip of him self but not his trembling hands which kept moving round Asher's fatally bruised body."Oh Asher...What is this and...?" He suddenly remembered the voice over the phone, mentioning two men in the vehicle with Asher had died at the hit scene."Where are they?"He asked, fixing his eyes on Asher's body. The doctors looked at him, confused and wondering why Robert was asking someone who was obviously in a coma, questions. "Please answer me" he said, "The two dead men, where are
Turning sour
Chapter 14Geraldine noticed something was off about Ava's recent drift of mood. She was always indoors and when she's outside, she was either speaking to herself or acting weird. She had tried to ask Ava a couple of times to know what the problem was. But Ava would always tell her, everything was fine. She was in the kitchen and suddenly the doorbell rang, not the usual way but in the most unusual kind of way since she moved in with Ava into the apartment after her husband's demise. She hurried towards the door, running along with the kitchen towel which she was using to dry the water in her hand."Hold on a second please..!"She shouted in the highest strain of her voice. That wasn't a joke, was it? Geraldine thought to herself as she stood right there, at the door entrance. Looking at her daughter, Ava smoking and with a bottle of brandy.Same Ava who rarely tastes wine because of her fear for alcohol, even when you would constantly promise and assure her it has no content of alco
The stillness
Chapter 14Ava woke up the next day, choking on her breath. She sat up quickly, clutching her chest.“Another one,” she muttered, wiping her face. The tears had dried on her skin, but the ache still feels fresh, just like every other daysShe gently stood up from the bed and walked down towards the mirror, simply the new her, since she became a shadow of herself. She pulled the chair closer as she sat right in front of the mirror.Nothing had changed, not even the sudden wrinkles, taking over her face. Yes wrinkles, the exact same wrinkles that irritate her the most. Which her mother had pushed her on, so she would have all the money and prevent such disgusting looks happening to her. But unfortunately, she was already there.“What do you think I can do to get you off this shackles?" She asked the awful image staring back at her, her voice husky.Slowly, she moved her face closer towards the mirror, her hand moving from the tired eyes dark circles down to the cracky lips.Suddenly
The Weight of it
Chapter 16The garden smelled like wet earth and silence. Evening had sunk halfway into the horizon, stretching a gold and gray twilight across the lawn. The trees swayed gently making the roses blinked their dewy eyes. And there Asher was, seated on the stone bench beneath the magnolia, head down, hands clenched tight on his lap. Every leaf rustled, felt like a whisper behind his back.Returning to the family he once turned his back on and seeing how much they cared and stayed close to him all through his healing process, left him wondering what a life without them in it.But something was always in the way. Regret, yes. He just could not let go, no matter how much he had tried. The thought of letting his father down haunted him all through. He had totally isolated himself. Not because of anything, but because, looking back into those eyes he blew off just because he felt the future he desperately needed was within him.He was still there, carried away by the thought of how he could
A new beginning
Chapter 17Asher paused at the threshold of Robert's door moments after leaving the garden to speak to his father. His heart panting heavily, what if his father says no to his plan? Well, whatever comes the response. He was ready to accept it with a good fate, he thought as he took a deep breath, gently opening the door without knocking on it.And there, was his father, sitting behind the walnut desk. Clearing busy, glancing through the files on the desk. The desk lamp cast a narrow pool of light over a portrait of his late mother, and for a moment he felt his heart ached as he bent and shook his head slowly. "Feels good to see you looking this real in a picture Mom" he whispered to himself, then walked on to meet his father“Hey Dad, is it okay if I join you,” he said quietly, stepping closer.Robert raised his head up, narrowing his brow as he nodded his head in response."Thank you" He said quickly as he fastened his movement, running his fingers through his hair. Asher got to hi
Echoes
Chapter: Echoes Ashland suddenly smelt like a home, from the very day Asher set his eyes on Lily. He would always go to sleep smiling and waking up stronger and energetic the next day. Finally there was someone, who was going to make forgetting the whole ugly past, a fast one . The same lady he shared his plans with and studied with while in college. That was certainly the universe in his favour to regain his sanity and get right back on his ground.Since Lily lives in the same city. Asher would stroll down to her apartment, where she stayed with her family. They mostly sit in the living room. Share their good and bad old times and laugh together.Lily had pleaded most of the time with him, so he could stay with them. But that? Definitely not what Asher wanted to give a second thought to, after Ava made him doubt every genuineness around him.And just like every other day. He had visited the family, and they were all seated in the living room, moments after dinner. However, The tw
Road to nowhere
Chapter 19:Ava stared at the ceiling, its pale paint cracked like the roadmap of her life splitting at odd angles, leading nowhere. Morning light tried to sneak in through the window, slashing across the room in tired yellow lines. She popped out a belch and they smell like pits. The memory of last night was seemingly stuck in her head. She wished she could let it slide, just like every other day. But no, not after smoking and drinking herself to a stupor. She had longed for a day, and maybe that was it.She dragged herself upright. Her body protested of course. Every muscle throbbed as though she’d fought her way through the night instead of dancing and drinking through it. She blinked and then the pictures of what Mason made her do inside the club flashed back into her head. But the worst of it all was how she got home, which she could not remember. And looking at herself for the first time. She realised she was a complete mess, seeing the rags she had on, even when she was certai
Ashland
Chapter 20 Ava had set an alarm that would help wake her up early, so she could get prepared and set for her journey. Her plan was to leave home to a hotel for the meantime and by all means. She wanted some time to be sure it was the right step to take before jumping on it.However, Ava was awake even before the alarm could beep. She was just there, seated upright and gazing at the time on her phone.A part of her was super excited she was going away, far from her mother's reach, her subjection and incessant demands, while the other was scared of the uncertainty. At long last. She breathed as she checked on the time again after staring at herself in the mirror and was convinced and certain that was all she needed at the time. She wrapped her hand on the heavy trunk which she had packed up because it was definitely going to be a long one and probably forever. "Good morning, miss"She said to the lady who seemed busy looking into the computer on arriving at the front desk."Hey...
