Chapter One
Eli’s eyes landed on the green emerald pendant that sat in a corner of the magnificent Bijou Royale.Today was his wife's birthday and also their two year wedding anniversary.“Please can I know how much that emerald necklace is?” Eli asked nicely as he pointed at that one necklace he was certain his wife was going to love.“Not to be rude Sir, but that necklace isn't something you can afford and I advise you to go for something cheaper.” The attendee responded, her voice filled with contempt and disgust as she looked at the man in front of her. What was he thinking, that this was some sort of thrift shop he could walk into and pick anything he wanted. She wasn't even sure he could afford thrift with the way he looked.Eli bent to look at his outfit, wondering if he really looked that bad, he had spent hours looking for a cloth that wouldn't give his poor background away, he couldn't believe that she was able to tell by merely glancing at him.“Can I atleast know the price?” He conti

Chapter Two “Oh, look who is here?”.... Mireille Morreau, Elara’s cousin said, her voice loud enough to draw attention to Eli who had just walked into Elara's birthday party which was being held at Genevieve Morreau — Elara’s grandmother’s house.Eli, who was tired due to the distance it took from his house to this place, and the only available car had been used by Elara sighed to himself, wishing that everybody would ignore him and he could spend time with his wife“Darling!!! – I know you said I should wait at home for you and how you wanted to surprise me, but grandma threw this party and she said if I didn’t show up on time, we were going to have issues, that’s why I left.” Elara, who had noticed the commotion, said as soon as she reached Eli’s side.“Oh! – pleeease – you do not owe this man an explanation.” Lucien Morreau, …. Elara’s uncle and Selva’s younger brother said, coming to stand beside Elara. Unfortunately for Eli, Lucien was about to make an announcement, and a mic
Chapter Three
Eli watched as different men walked up to his wife, advertising themselves to her like she wasn’t already married, some even went as far as pecking her cheeks and forehead, and he couldn’t help but feel disrespected, a huge feeling in his heart to go and stand beside Elara as he watched her look of discomfort enveloped him, but he stopped himself, because he didn’t want any look of disapproval from her grandma, and he didn’t want to add a strain on Elara and her grandmother’s relationship, things were already not so smooth for her because she had insisted on sticking with him, and he didn’t want to add to it.Eli’s face shifted slightly to that of anger and sadness as he watched Dominic Vaughn, the man that had been openly and shamelessly pursuing his wife, give her the Jade necklace he had been eyeing earlier that night and hoping to get for his wife.“Elara – you know I love you and I can get you the whole world, I don’t know why you insist on staying with that poor man that can bar
Chapter Four
Elara felt her face burn up and her resentment towards Eli increase, she just couldn’t understand why he had to show up for this party, now she was spending every moment defending him and getting into trouble with her family, she was certain if she kept this up, her grandma might end the event on time, and the rift between them would worsen.“I believe Cassian is right, I think Eli really did cast a spell on her, look at how he looks and she is still defending him.”“See all the people begging for her attention and she wouldn’t even look at them, deciding instead to stick with that urchin.”Murmurs and whispers filtered from around her into Elara’s ears, bringing a satisfied smile in her heart, at least this wasn’t for nothing, and she could continue to pretend to be the good wife, while watching Eli suffer.“I think we should leave love – clearly we are not wanted here.” Elara turned to face Eli, grieve and pain written all over her face.“Who said you are not wanted here, it is cle
Chapter Five
His first thought was to open the envelope right there and then, but after noticing the crowd on the road and not really knowing the contents in the envelope, he decided to wait till he got home. A loud noise from his stomach reminded him of why he had stepped out from his wife’s birthday party as he made his way to a local restaurant to get something to eat.Eli stared at the light insect that kept fluttering around him, making it impossible to enjoy his meal, as he wondered when he was finally going to be able to dine in rich restaurants and order food from the comfort of his house when he didn’t feel like stepping anywhere. He shook his head realizing that his thoughts were just wishful thinking, and despite all he had done to climb higher, it felt so impossible for him. He could only be grateful to his wife for staying by him and sticking by his side despite all the ridicule he got from her family members and strangers as well. Eli finished his food and left the restaurant, befo
Chapter Six
Eli stares at the paper and envelope in his hand, different questions going through his mind, what did it mean he wasn’t who he thought he was, heck – he didn’t think he was anybody. He was starting to suspect the letter wasn’t for him and could be for another Eli Thorne, besides the situation in which he had gotten the envelope was suspicious. After thinking for a while, Eli decides to hide the envelope and letter, while using the key that had come in the envelope to determine if both items belonged to him. When he was done hiding the letter in a successful spot that he was certain no one was going to find, he brought out the key from where it lay in his pocket to examine it . The key looked both normal and unique. It looked like an everyday normal key, but a letter he couldn’t quite read and understand was carved on its body, and upon closer look, it looked like the tip of the key was curved slightly in an unusual manner. Sighing he placed the keys back in his pocket, he was tired
Chapter Seven
Eli!!!, – why isn’t my toilet washed and why are you still holding that damn key. Selva asked, walking into the kitchen and snatching the key from his hands. “Didn’t you play when you were little?” Now you are actually acting dramas and creating scenarios in your head?”“I am so sorry, the toilet totally slipped my mind, – I just thought you would be hungry, so I decided to prepare lunch now. I also wanted Elara to have something to eat when she gets home, – please can I have the key back.” Eli responded, dropping the bowl he had just sieved down, stretching his hands to retrieve his key from Selva’s hands.“Don’t you dare touch me with those filthy hands, and I need you to stay 5 meters away from me. – Hope you watched those hands properly before thinking of touching our meal. Selva spoke, taking further steps away from Eli.“That key really shouldn’t be in your hands, Mrs Morreau.” Eli said, his voice cold making Selva to flinch in fear involuntarily. “It’s too disgusting, and a pr
Chapter Eight
“Make yourself comfortable while I prepare something for you to eat.” Evelyn smiled, as she gestured for Eli to take a seat.“There’s nothing much, just a few leftovers, hope you don’t mind.” Evelyn called from the kitchen, her voice raised slightly.“No, Mom, no problem at all.” Eli responded, getting up from his chair as he made his way to the room that was once his.His foster parents were not rich, and you could see the tell tale signs of poverty lurking everywhere as you walked. They had no kids of their own, because his parents had found out that Franklin was impotent when they had married, but Evelyn loved her husband so much that she couldn’t bear to leave and Eli showing up on their doorstep had been the best day of their lives. As he walked through the narrow hallway, he noticed the fraying edges of the carpet runner beneath his shoes. It curled at the corners and was threadbare in places, revealing the rough, stained floorboards beneath. The wallpaper was yellowing and p

“Don’t say that Eli.” Evelyn threw her head back as a gasp escaped her mouth, her lips trembling, her fingers shaking.“I will always love you Eli, and I am so glad that you showed up on our door that day. I know I have not been able to give you the best life, but that doesn’t determine my love for you.”“The money you were paid to keep quiet, where did they all go too, why are you still living poorly, why did we live as paupers, – don’t tell me you were bought over by something so little.” Eli asked, his voice steady, his gaze unwavering.Evelyn sighed, moving in the direction of the sitting room while gesturing for Eli to follow her.” I and your father, if you still consider us that decided to use it to train you through school, and then set up a business for you, but after you left, we didn’t have the conscience to keep holding on to the money, we had thought of giving it up for charity but we realized it wasn’t ours to give, so we decided to lock it and kept hoping you would show
