Chapter Twenty - one
What did you do that for.” Eli asked, standing up, while dusting his shirt. The guards looked at him with disgust, turning his head away.Eli smiled silently to himself as he walked up to the cashier. “ I would like to see your manager for compensation for what the security did to me.”“I did nothing to you sir, can you stop trying to push blames?” The security finally spoke, coming to stand beside Eli.“So are you saying, I would fall by myself and destroy jeweleries I used so much amount to get?” Eli asked calmly, looking from the guard to the cashier.“Yes, sir, that's exactly what I think, you probably borrowed the money you used in paying for the jewellery, and this is your perfect plan to get the money back.” The cashier spoke, signalling to the guard to throw him out.Eli noticed the slight movement, quickly dodging the grip of the security, raising his voice as he spoke in order to get the attention of other people in the store.“Treating your customers in this manner isn't so

How are you feeling?” Selene asked Eli as he slid into the car.“I just had a brief misunderstanding with them, it's nothing serious.” “A guard took the CCTV recordings, Eli.” Selene sighed, “from the recordings it shows you had a personal vendetta with them.“How, and when did you get the recordings?” Eli looked suspiciously at Selene.“When everybody was distracted and trying to appease you, I sent a guard to threaten one of the security guards.” Selene shrugged a shoulder, like it was normal. “Just didn’t want to take chances.Eli looked at Selene in amazement, not knowing what to say to that.“Thank you.” He said after a while, getting emotional, that for the first time in a long while, someone had his back.“No need to thank me Eli, we are family.” Selene responded smiling.“Are you ready to leave, or is there something more you want to do.”Eli stared at Selene for a while, a sense of belonging overwhelming him, all the anger and pain of not feeling like he belonged slipping aw

Selene returned while Eli was in the shower, taking as much time as he could, oblivious to the time spent and the woman in the bedroom. After making sure, there was nothing more he could enjoy, he finally emerged.“Gosh, Selene, you scared me.-- why did you enter here like this, what if I had been naked.” Eli exclaimed, his brow creasing in annoyance.“I never thought of that, -- my bad, I had been in the living room for hours, I got worried, and decided to come check up on you.” Selene responded, giving Eli a once over. “I will give you some privacy.Selene’s heart ached at how malnourished Eli looked, he had said he had been eating well, plus the job he had been doing had given him muscles, but he didn’t look as healthy as she wanted him to look. Everytime she looked at Eli, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness, he looked so much like Leonhart, that she always had tis sense of guilt that she could have done better to help him, to help all of them. She wiped a stray drop of te

Selene smiled at him, motioning with her hands for him to follow her, while giving silent orders to the guards.Swallowing loudly, Eli looked round, checking his surroundings for possible exit before following closely behind her.The heavy wooden doors groaned as Selene pushed them open, the sound echoing through the stillness, making Eli halt in his steps for a moment too long, a look from Selene setting him back motion. The air inside was cooler, older—carrying with it the faint scent of cedar, parchment, and something metallic, almost like iron left too long in the rain.Eli stepped in cautiously, his shoes clicking against polished stone floors that had clearly outlived generations. The space was dim, lit only by thin strands of daylight filtering through the tall, narrow windows. Dust motes danced lazily in the shafts of light, giving the room a ghostly shimmer. The interior was neither modern nor extravagant. There were no glittering chandeliers, no indulgent displays of wealth.
Chapter Twenty - Five
The days after that day passed in a blur, at first Selene had been the one to pick him up from his home and drive him to Alistair’s house, eventually he had gotten used to the roads, guards had been assigned to him, so now he was making the journey on his own, with the company of one guard. The day started off like every other day, waking up early to take a stroll round his house, and exercise he had been doing days on end to familiarise himself with the building, but for some reason, the road leading to the mentor house was easier to memorize than the walls of his own house. He got lost like three or four times, a great improvement to the amount of times he had been lost on previous days. Did his usual routine of taking a bath, spending hours deciding the best fit to wear, then wondering if he should eat and what he should eat, before finally leaving the house. He checked his time, deciding he still had enough to have a simple breakfast. He had a rushed breakfast of eggs and toast

What… what do you mean Alistair is gone?” – he is pranking us, right, right?, – Eli say something.” Selene yelled as she took some steps away from Alistair's cold form.In his haste and confusion, Eli had called Selene, he didn't know what he was going to do about Alistair's body, so he had called her, but he didn't know if that was a good idea as he stared at the shaking form of Selene.“Where is Marcus?” Selene’s broken, teary voice came from where she sat, her red swollen eyes staring into Eli’s clouded eyes.Eli had been in a state of utter complete confusion and sadness, that he hadn’t bothered to check on Marcus, but now that Selene mentioned it, he couldn’t help but feel suspicious towards him.“I didn’t see him when I got here, except if I was in too much of a hurry to notice.”“Do you think…?” Eli asked, completing his sentence with his eyes.“I have known Marcus for years, there is no way he…. No, no. Selene shook her head as she considered the possibility.Eli’s chest tigh
Chapter Twenty - Seven
While Eli stood guard, Selene moved through the study with a, terrifying focus. She found a small, empty decanter in a cabinet, its crystal facets catching the lamplight. Using a linen napkin to avoid touching the cup, she carefully poured the remainder of Alistair’s poisoned tea into it, sealing the stopper tightly.“This,” she murmured, her voice tight but controlled, “will tell us what kind of poison was used.”Then she placed the delicate cup into a separate zippered bag she’d found in Alistair’s desk. “The lab can analyze the cup. We don’t need… we don’t need him for that.” She couldn’t bring herself to look at the body. When she was certain there was nothing else she could secure in the room, she signalled to Eli that she was going to check outside, maybe there was something the killer had left behind. Eli nodded once, before following closely behind her, serving as a guard and companion. The car became their next focus. The sharp smell of something chemical, that Eli had not no

Selene’s hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles glowed white. The car crawled down the dark, winding roads that led away from what used to be Alistair’s house. Her headlights carved two cones of light through the night, sweeping over hedges and the occasional road sign. The silence inside the car was louder than the engine’s low hum, louder than the gravel crunching under the tires.Eli sat slumped in the passenger seat, staring out the window but seeing nothing. His reflection in the glass looked ghostly, hollow-eyed, lips parted slightly as though breathing from his nose had become difficult. He hadn’t spoken since the explosion—not a single sound. Only the shallow rise and fall of his chest showed that he was still here.Selene glanced at him, then back at the road. She could feel the shake in her own hands every time she shifted her grip. Her throat was tight, her stomach sour, but she forced herself to breathe evenly. The car had to stay steady. They couldn’t af

Victor, – I have a feeling he is the one behind the murders, he is no ally, which means he must have someone in our circle as an informant.” “He has been running Aurelius for a while now, killing your father’s legacy, changing Aurelius from what it truly is, to something completely different. – He must have sensed you were getting closer to taking Aurelius from him, that’s why he had killed Alistair.” Selene spoke as she glanced at Eli.It had been weeks since that night at Alistair’s house, but they were no where close to finding the culprit behind Alistair and Marcus’s deathSelene was sitting on the couch of Eli’s house which he had moved back into after making sure he wasn’t going to be ambushed there, Selene had been skeptical at first, but he had insisted, staying in the safe house had done nothing to help them either, so it was best he returned. “ Might drag the killer out.” Those had been his words on the day he had made that decision.“Who is he?” Eli asked, sipping his juic

Selene’s phone vibrated softly on the couch. She glanced down, then back up at Eli, her voice quieter now, not wanting to disturb the storm building in him.“Eli, you should rest. You’ve barely slept since—”He cut her off before she could finishe her sentence, his head moving slightly as he spoke. “I can’t afford rest. Not now.”Selene watched him for a moment longer, then sighed. She gathered her tablet, muttering something about compiling the toxicologist’s extended notes. She knew better than to press him, she knew se wasn’t going to be getting any sleep either. The house was quiet after Selene left, her faint perfume lingering in the living room long after the sound of her car faded from the drive. Eli turned from the window and walked slowly through the house, his shoes echoing alon gthe silence as he contemplated his next move.He stopped some metres away from the bowl that held his keys, a decision Selene had warned him against, but he still hadn’t found a better spot to place
