Chapter Thirty - one
‘How did my father know I was going to remain alive, and I wouldn’t be killed with them.’‘How did he know I would eventually come back to take over Aurelius.’‘What had made him sure that I would find that tape.’ All this thoughts ran through Eli’s head as he sat across from Selene in her house. The air felt different than the first time he had been here, like the joyful and happy mood had been replaced with a sense of foreboding.Even the house keepers spoke in whispers, their steps heavy, like they had experienced something of this sort in the past and they didn't know what to make of it.‘I have started to make your presence known in Aurelius, and also let them know you are coming to take over.” She was saying, her voice calm.‘There were some disagreements of course, but majority of the people seem to agree that since you are Leonhart's son and I have promised to take responsibility if anything goes bad, then you can take over as the head, afterall it was what Leonhart would have
Chapter Thirty - two
Selene watched Eli get into the plane that had been arranged for him to fly to Rome that night, she lifted her hands in a slight wave, tears pooling at the corner of her eyes, but before the doors of the plane could be closed shut, she had a change of mind, deciding it was better and safer if she went with Eli, afterall he still didn’t know his way around there yet, and the last thing she needed was for him getting lost while trying to find Aurelius headquarters. She had wanted to stay out of sight when the Lazarus clause was declared, so that they wouldn’t link it to her and think Eli was too weak to make a decision for himself, she had also wanted him to declare the lazarus clause at Aurelius headquarters back at home, but reasoned it was best done where the global headquarters was located. That would make it more effective. This left her wondering, like she had always done when Leonhart was alive, why he had decided it best to have the global headquarters situated in a place he ha
Chapter Thirty - Three
Elara settled on her couch, groaning silently as she looked at her mother, who sat some metres away from her watching TV. She didn't want to admit it, but she was missing Eli. Now this wasn’t because she suddenly realized how much she loved him after he had gone, No!!. She was missing him because the work needed to do at home had increased since he left, no more home cooked meals waiting for her when she got home, with him ready to do all her bidding, despite how tired he might be.Now, her mother helped with the chores every now and then, and there were days when she would have food ready before Elara arrived, but today wasn’t part of those days, which was putting Elara in a mood. She had thought so many times of calling Eli, to tell him how much she needed him back, but she didn’t want to be the first to fold. When she had first sent him out, she had expected him to come crawling back to her in a few days, and she had been bothered and wondered how she was going act, but after some
Chapter Thirty - Four
Elara spent the next few days trying to gather evidence and information on the person she had seen on the screen. If it really was Eli, she could guilt trip him into coming back to her, while also making sure he didn't change in his wife's doting ways. And she could finally live the life she had always dreamt of without having to marry someone else.On the other hand, Eli spent his days gathering information on the workers and stakeholders he wanted gone from the company.“This isn't solid Aunt Selene!! - we need something strong, a real reason to have him laid off, something that he wouldn't be able to escape from or blackmail us with in the future.” Eli said from where he sat, his voice raised a notch higher, you couldn't see the desperation and frustration in his eyes as he sat on the large wooden mahogany table he had ordered for his home office. The ridicule and scorn from the media was increasing everyday, that he was starting to regret his decision of declaring the Lazarus clau
Chapter Thirty - Five
He had spent that morning cementing the evidence Selene had been able to gather, making plans and going through plans they had made. Selene had said it was best they strike at night, which he had agreed to, Their guards would be down, defences low.He watched as the Sun settled into a dark purplish grey, a smile forming on his face as he sent a text to Selene telling her he was ready. She had left earlier for something urgent, he hadn't asked what, because he didn't feel like he needed to.He felt his pulse begin to race as he stepped out of his house into the dark night. He had kept the outside light on purpose, making him feel safe and invisible.Selene did not come inside. She watched him go from the front window, then retreated to the driver’s seat of a nondescript black sedan and folded herself into the leather with deliberate casualness. They had come to the decision of her going with him, but staying out of sight, but being present as his silent support. When Eli slid behind th
Chapter Thirty - six
The morning after felt heavier. Eli hadn’t expected sleep, but the little he’d stolen had done nothing to quiet his mind. He stood by the glass wall of his office, staring down at the Aurelius towers that glittered like a city within a city. The whole headquarters seemed restless, as if the building itself had caught the news before the people did.Marcus. Lillian. Adrian. Three pillars gone in one night. Their resignations had hit the wires at dawn, no explanations given. Officially, it was “personal.” Unofficially, it was chaos.Down below, the lobby was a churn of voices, quick handshakes, whispers of uncertainty and doubt. Eli could almost hear it even from this height—the ripple of uncertainty when people didn’t know which way power leaned.Selene came in without knocking, as always, A black shawl and a dark shade in place, as if hiding from the world below or the people in Aurelius or both. She dropped her coat on his sofa, raising her glasses above her head, tossed her phone on
Chapter Thirty - Seven
The drive home was a blur of headlights and shadows, Eli grateful that he had learnt how to drive a car, and the fact that Selene had listened to him, dismissing the driver and car she had hired, buying one they could use while in Rome. He still couldn’t shake off the feeling of everybody working against them. Eli had dialed Selene’s number so many times his thumb had gone numb, but it was always the same result—straight to voicemail, her voice absent, only the cold mechanical message waiting on the other end.He wished he had stopped her when she had walked out of his office or told her he was coming along, but he knew that was only thinking, there was no way she would have listened, after all she was way older than him, and she would have told him she was fine. Not like any of them had known she wasn’t going to be returning anytime soon. He didn’t want to think of it, constantly reminding himself that this wasn’t the first time that Selene would disappear like this, moving into cor
Chapter Thirty - Eight
Eli stood in the center of the grand study, surrounded by the relics of Leonhart’s life. The faint scent of cedar and old paper hung in the air, the city’s morning light spilling in thin gold lines across the polished floor. He hadn’t slept. Not since the envelope. He could feel the fog growing in his head, and the eye bags starting to form, but he knew he wasn't going to be getting any sleep, not when Selene was still missing, and the dna report lay glaring at him, open from where it sat on the desk, its words pressing into his mind. Not a biological match. He wanted to believe it was fake, a plant, a move in the endless game Aurelius played with itself. But the doubt… He shook his head, trying to clear his mind and stay focused, this was what they wanted, he couldn't let them win.If there was even a chance it was true, he needed proof — not someone’s word, not forged documents, proof. He sank into Leonhart’s chair, running a hand through his hair. The seat still carried a scent th
Chapter Thirty - nine
Eli watched the sky from the balcony of Leonhart’s study, watching as the clouds got thicker and heavier like it was ready to pour out the water it held, his hands gripping the rail until the cold metal bit into his skin.Three days. That was how long the report had been ready. Three days since the lab sent him the message: “Your results are available for collection.”And still, the envelope sat behind a counter somewhere downtown, untouched, waiting. He should’ve gone. He told himself that every morning. He would pace the floor, look at the clock, even pick up his car keys once, twice, before putting them down again.Because what if it said the truth? What if Victor was truly his brother? What if, after all the chaos, all the blood and deception, Victor was truly really the heir and Victor had been right about Selene using him?Or worse — what if the result confirmed he wasn’t a Leonhart at all, and Victor was just playing all of them, sucking Aurelius dry?He rubbed at his temple, f
Chapter Forty
Eli blinked. Once. Twice. The sound of a slow, rhythmic, mechanical beep sent a sharp pain through his brain, he closed his eyes briefly, trying to drown the sound, giving up when it didn’t work.. The light above him burned too bright, stabbing through the darkness that had claimed him, leaving him disoriented. For a fleeting second, he thought this was what death felt like — weightless, detached, floating somewhere between dreams and silence. He tried to lift his hand, but the effort sent a stab of pain through his arm. His throat was dry, his tongue heavy. He tried to speak, but all that came out was a low, cracked sound that barely passed for a breath. The air smelled of antiseptic and faint lemon — sterile, the smell reminding him of the kind of place that scrubbed away all traces of blood and pain.He lay there for a while, unfeeling, except for the constant ring in his ears, and the tears gathering in eyes due to the light. Then almost at once. He felt it. The dull ache in his
