Chapter 61: Kidnapped
Lucas sighed for the umpteenth time later that day and frowned, his eyes scanning his phone waiting for a text back from the woman he had angered. Sophia. Ever since their little blow-back at the conference room, she had gone radio silent and hadn’t contacted him. Plus, Lucas couldn’t let go on how harsh he was to her. Granted, she was married and even though her words about being estranged from Alexander were true, the divorce papers were yet to be signed and in his mind, his hands were tied. There was nothing he could do. But, he knew that he had to apologize. At least to get the bad tension between them out of the way. Now, that was another problem in itself, because Lucas had texted Sophia non-stop throughout the day with no reply back. She had been so reserved that Lucas wasn’t even sure if she was actively ignoring him, or she had blocked him the first chance she got. Still, he wanted to make an effort. Hell, he would be working closely with her. He didn’t need any work drama.
Chapter 62: An Apology Dinner
'Sophia?' Lucas repeated, his voice rising to confirm Sophia hadn't mistaken it then.Sophia turned around immediately, and her eyes widened in surprise. Blinding lights gave way to a stunning view. The warm arrangement of. A beautifully set dinner table sat before her, complete with fine china and candles. The whole place was adorned with fairy lights and looked like a scene straight out of a romance movie, but Sophia didn’t let her guard down. After all, the man was most likely involved in her recent kidnapping. Sophia wondered why Lucas put in so much effort after specifically telling her he wanted nothing to do with her as long as her marriage was still in the picture. Her initial fear and surprise were slowly turning into irritation.Lucas sat behind the table, his eyes locked onto Sophia's. His smile lit up the space, and his gaze drew her in."Sophia," he said, his voice low and inviting. "Join me.” Sophia stormed up to the table, her anger boiling over. "What the hell?" she
Chapter 63: He's Back
Lucas’ car pulled up to Sophia's sleek and modern condo. The one she moved into after filing for a divorce. The one she was forced to move into when Alexander wouldn’t let her breathe without trying to control her. "You're home safe," Lucas said, smiling warmly as he placed the car into park.Sophia smiled back, her relief palpable, and stepped out onto the sidewalk. Lucas got down from the car and decided to walk her to the entrance. As they strolled towards the entrance, Lucas asked, "I hope I have been forgiven?" He said with a warm smile, wanting to put all their problems behind them. Sophia's eyes sparkled playfully. "I'll definitely have to think about it," she replied, her voice laced with cockiness and they both laughed."Good night, Mrs. Verga," Lucas said as soon as they got to the entrance of her home, his eyes glinting under the house light. “Want to come in for a bit?” Sophia asked.“It’s quite late, I had better get going,” he replied, shaking his head and knowing bet
Chapter 64: The Last Straw
Immediately, Lucas' phone buzzed as Alexander finished speaking. A text from Security flashed on the screen:"Sir, we're positioned outside your door. Signal us if anything happens. Your assistant told us about the situation." It read.Lucas nodded to himself, reassured and the phone dimmed. He placed his phone on the table and returned his eyes to Alexander, meeting the man’s glare."I don't know what you mean. Mr Verga", Lucas said, his face not betraying his true emotions. Alexander raised an eyebrow, his expression clearly showing his growing hate for Lucas. "Oh, Really?" He asked sarcastically, quickly sitting across from Lucas, fingers intertwined as he leaned into the chair. "So you're saying you didn't have dinner with my wife, Sophia, last night?" He asked, eyes twitching in anger. “In fact, a candle lit dinner in a very romantic setting. Is that what you’re trying to tell me, Lucas Graham?” He fumed, his voice raising slightly at Lucas’ active lie or rather a hiding of t
Chapter 65: A Filler
Immediately after the call with Axel, Lucas dialed Collin’s number, his private investigator, but there was no answer. He tried to call again, but he still couldn’t get through to him. The phone was ringing but no one was picking up the line. It was annoying, but Lucas couldn’t do anything about it. So, without hesitation, Lucas picked up his office phone and called Helena’s table, to which she responded immediately.“Helena, please call the private investigator or try to reach him somehow because he isn’t answering his phone. Tell him to call me immediately. If possible, he should come to the office.” Lucas ordered before Helena got the chance to say a word, his voice laced with urgency.“Yes sir.” She replied and hung up to do what she was told to do. Helena quickly sent a message to Collin’s email, and I’m less than five minutes, Lucas' phone rang.“Good day Mr. Graham. Sorry I couldn’t pick up. Family emergency.” Collins greeted and explained warmly as soon as Lucas picked up, b
Chapter 66: Attacked in Broad Daylight
After Helena left, the rest of Lucas's day was peaceful and passed quickly without any more incidents, especially after Alexander’s invasive visit. Lucas quietly signed the rest of the documents; he was tired, but he had to ensure that every detail was accurate and that he signed everything correctly. He didn’t want the events of the day to affect how he ran the company. When Lucas finally finished, he quickly packed all his belongings and strolled out of his office. As he walked away, Lucas exchanged pleasant good nights with Helena at her desk.“Goodnight Helena, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said with a small nod."Goodnight, sir,” Helena responded with a warm smile, barely looking at him because she was packing up her stuff and getting ready to close the workday.“Do you know if Mrs. Verga is still in the office?” He asked, pausing to hear an answer. He thought that Sophia might start avoiding him because of Alexander’s warnings, and he wanted to let her know that there was nothing t
Chapter 67:The Aftermath
In a minute or so, the light vanished, and the smoke cleared, revealing the buildings, which were still standing tall and not destroyed in the slightest way despite the enormous explosion. Lucas stood in the middle of the rubble, his hands stretched out and his face twisted in pain.Just like a scene from an action movie, Lucas had managed to contain the blast's flames and reduced the effects of the explosion’s heat by transferring all of it to his own space just like he had countless times with people who had come after him. Using their own gifts, or in this case, what resonated with his gifts, against them. With great force and with all his strength, he raised his hands, directing the fire upward. The sky flashed with flames, briefly warming the air, but soon enough, the flames vanished, leaving Lucas extremely exhausted, trembling and sweating as his knees shook. Lucas had never done this before. In fact, it wasn’t sometimes he thought he was capable of, but he still risked his l
Chapter 68: A Failed Interrogation
“Lucas, thank God you’re fine.” Sophia said as she embraced him.“I never knew that Alexander would do something so terrible just to assert his twisted sense of power. It’s all my fault.” She cried.Lucas gave her a warm smile, “I know it is not your fault and, for the record, I’m fine,” he stated.Sophia nodded as she wiped her tears away and pulled back from him. With that out of the way, they talked about random things, laughing at jokes and talking about her progress at work, all in a bid to distract themselves from the dangerous situation Lucas was in just a few hours ago. Lucas wanted to ask her how she found out about the incident, but he decided against it. “Maybe someone from the office or perhaps it had already made the news.” He thought to himself, not wanting to dive into that. The latter was the most probable thing. About an hour later, Sophia decided that it was time to go. “I have to go now, Lucas,” she smiled.“Please get well soon, and I will come visit you soon.” Sh
Chapter 69: In The Dark
After a few minutes of sitting quietly, Lucas finally broke the silence, his voice firm. "All right then, Axel. I'll leave it to you to gather more evidence, as you promised." He said in a solemn but strong tone.Axel nodded, his expression calm after his earlier outburst. "I won't let him slip away, Lucas. We'll definitely get him. I’ll make sure he’s not getting out of here the next time he comes in." Logan reassured him.Lucas quietly stood up, his steps swift as he walked out of the questioning room, leaving Axel still thinking about the investigation and Alexander’s deceitful words. He made his way through the police station, thinking about his next activity for the day, while he still received stares from the officers of the station. He thought about going to the office, but he didn’t think he was ready for that yet. Not while he was still in a bender of sorts. Immediately he took out his new phone to call Helena. The call didn’t even get to ring once completely before it was
Chapter 70: Questioning
It didn’t take long for Axel and some of the other police officers to arrive at the hospital, worried and shocked that someone had still tried to kill Lucas when their men were stationed around the room. Forget about the audacity of the assassin. Where were the men who were supposed to be protecting Lucas when the assassination attempt occurred? Axel fumed all the way to Lucas’ room, not bothering to glance at the men who had let him down at such a critical moment. He bypassed the nurses and doctors on the floor and went straight into Lucas’ room. As soon as he went in, his eyes landed on the pool of blood on the ground. He winced for a moment, wondering what the hell went down there before he raised his gaze to meet the only person who was awake in the room. Sophia. Her lip quivered, and her hands shook, but her face was turned towards Lucas, a contented look on her face. Axel bit his lip. What the hell? He turned to one of his men and asked a question, not wanting to disturb Soph
