Chapter 21 - The dim-lit alley
At 8pm, the busy street of Southend near the fruit market was crowded, not spectators, police, detectives and reporters crowded the area looking down at an unconscious or seemingly dead man receiving medical attention. Amongst them, Carl stood at a distance leaning against a street light. The last time this happened, he got a slap from Mr. Adkins, and now it repeated itself. What made it even strange was the fact that it happened the same way, and for the first time he was starting to get suspicious. "Why is it that whenever someone is after Oscar, they get strangled and injected?" It was hard to believe that this had anything to do with Oscar. Knowing that he broke out of prison, Carl feared that they'd been found and would be killed one after another. The intelligence unit had located them so perhaps it was time to flee again. Unfortunately, working for Adkins did not give him any hope, if he were to run away Adkins wouldn't mind supporting the government to find and arrest him
Chapter 22 - Mr. Manager
Vixen's Auto StoreThe next morning, the entire perimeter was quiet and busy, everyone trying to put one thing or another away or finish what they had to do. Some were adjusting their outfits or cleaning out their workspaces. They were all expecting the big boss to show up soon, so eager that they didn't notice Oscar's absence except for two people: Sammy and Grace. Now Sammy believed that Oscar was hiding something; he wasn't quite sure, but Oscar wasn't who he said he was.As for Grace, well, she never missed an opportunity like this; without further ado, she rushed into Ken's office, infuriated. "He's not at work once again!""Wellington?""Yes, Wellington! Who else?" Grace settled into the seat opposite him. "I no longer want him to work here; I've told you so many times that he doesn't take this job seriously. Just fire him already... listen, Ken, you have to pick. It's either me or him. Either fire that loser or I'm done.""Are you threatening me now, Grace?" Ken paused, shiftin
Chapter 23 - Another Oscar Wellington
"Slapping your boss? What is he talking about?" Mr Vixen was furious, his gaze fixed on Ken as though he was going to kill. Vixen had a record of a bad temper; he doesn't listen — he just acts. Selling off Vixen's Auto store was such an accomplishment, not to mention it's a pathway to other partnership opportunities with multiple companies."I can... can explain it, sir. This has to be some sort of misunderstanding. I... wait, not ... it's hard to... I don't know." Ken was lost for words; he looked at the staff who were also in the same state, and then at Grace, who didn't know how to react at all."Gibberish!" Vixen barked, "Just nonsense that's all you are talking about right now, Kenneth Blanco, and trust me, I do not want to hear it!""Sir, please...""Shut up!" Vixen cut Grace off before she could say anything. "Just shut up... If you speak to me one more time, kiss your job goodbye!"Grace quickly buried her head in shame and stepped back. Deep down, she strongly believed that i
Chapter 24 - Worse than he was
From the alley, Carl headed back to the Adkin mansion. No matter how he tried to conceal the truth, Mr Adkin would learn that another one of his men was dead, mostly from the media. The most important thing tonight was to give Adkin a good report. If there’s anything he had learned today, it’s that Oscar was not worth the extra attention, but he was bound to tell Adkin what the old man liked to hear.“He’s out of town,” he reported. For the first time, Carl was sitting opposite his boss at a table. Adkin was already seated beneath the mansion’s gazebo, an exquisitely furnished structure. He had just finished speaking with his potential son-in-law, an heir to an establishment with which he had sought a partnership for ages.Upon arrival, Adkin was in a good mood. Without hesitation, he asked Carl to sit, pushed one of the bottles of drink his way, and offered a smile. “I don’t have a cigarette; manage that.”“Thank you, sir,” Carl acknowledged, settling into the seat and taking a deep
Chapter 25 - Internal battles
Upon returning to the hotel, Oscar held a handkerchief over the bruised side of his face. He made it to his allocated room with John standing by him the whole time."I would have given him what he deserved if you had just let me, sir," John fumed, noticing the bruise that was swelling under Oscar's eye, which seemed to be getting larger by the minute."It doesn't matter," Oscar replied, taking the handkerchief off his face and wincing. "I'll be alright. I know why I do what I do... I'm being careful.""Careful?" John asked, watching as Oscar settled onto the couch in the living room. "What exactly are you being careful about, sir, if you don't mind me asking? Keeping a low profile isn't the same as being a doormat.""I know that, John. Can you get me an ice pack?""The doctor will be here in a minute to take care of it, sir," John answered. "It’s best not to touch it... About my question, do you mind giving me an answer?"Oscar s
Chapter 26 - A heartbreaking Christmas
Winter 2016The festive season was as jolly as it could get. In Southend, people were singing, Christmas artifacts were on display, and dozens of Christmas trees were lit up and lined along the cold street. While many had planned visits and gift wrapping, Oscar grieved.Mrs. Mable, the old lady he shared an apartment with, had passed away two days before Christmas after complaining of a cold. He had contacted her family earlier on, but they only seemed to care when the illness took an ill turn. All her grown-up children did was pay the rent for the apartment, but none cared how she was faring, what she was eating, or how she was living. Oscar had met Mabel at a shopping mall downtown and had seen her struggling with her bags of groceries. He offered to take them home for her, and upon getting to her house, found it dirty, plates in the sink needed cleaning, floors were dusty, and cobwebs were piled in the corner. The eighty-two-year-old lady could barely get anything done, and she was
Chapter 27 - She's never wrong
Vixen's Auto StoreKen was pacing endlessly in his office once more. He had summoned the courage to speak to his boss, through which he got the opportunity to speak with Kevin Wayne to sincerely apologize for a mistreatment that he knew nothing about. He apologized half-heartedly, like Grace said, pretending at work. However, Kevin did not accept his apology. Instead, he said that the representative would show up at the store once more, and Ken could apologize in person. Right there, Ken agreed. If it meant keeping his job, then why not? However, as soon as he got to the office, panic set in. He couldn’t shake off the feeling that something would go terribly wrong. It made no sense that Kevin Wayne would tell a lie about him and still insist that he apologize in person. It was hard to believe, but only one name came to his mind, and it was Oscar. On top of that, Oscar was absent from work that morning.“Sir, you sent for me?” came Sammy’s voice as he walked into Ken’s office, closing
Chapter 28 - That's what it feels like
The elevator door opened on the ground floor, and for a moment, Ken felt his heart drop. As the doors parted, he was met with the sight of an angry-looking man clad in a black leather jacket, thick black boots, and black gloves."This is definitely not the man I slapped," he thought to himself. Grace nudged him."I told you," she whispered, stepping out of the elevator behind him.In no time, Ken found himself face-to-face with John. Behind him stood Oscar, silent and with a scar on his right eye that was starting to heal. Ken struggled to find his words; what if he was about to apologise to the wrong person? A group of staff members gathered in the lobby, all eyes turned toward him."I... I am very sorry, sir," he rushed the statement, hoping to get it over with as quickly as possible. However, contrary to everyone's expectations, John punched him squarely on the nose. Ken staggered backwards, clutching his face as blood began to trail down his n
Chapter 29 - From panic to real anxiety
At the Adkins mansion, chaos was unfolding again, and no, it wasn't about Carl's departure; Mr Adkins had already dealt with that man in a way only he knew how. The chaos originated from an email sent to the Adkins Group by the Evermore Conglomerate, serving as both a warning and a threat to cut ties completely. What made this even more chaotic was the fact that the email didn't explicitly explain why they were being cut off. The vague statement 'until legal assessments are completed' wasn't convincing enough. This was also a time when the Adkins Group was flourishing, finally gaining popularity among its competitors. If the Evermore Conglomerate decided to stop assisting them now, it would be disastrous.Adkin had been sitting in the living room since seven a.m., making every possible call he could think of, texting those who hadn't picked up, and even responding to the email from the Evermore Conglomerate, requesting to speak with a representative to understand the situation. His wi
Chapter 30 - The lady's basement
In an empty room somewhere unknown, Carl's eyes snapped open, his head spinning like a tornado with flashes of lightning. The migraine was unbearable, his vision blurry, and nearly every part of his body ached as if he'd been bathed in fresh pepper. He couldn't move a muscle, not because of pain or numbness, but something was holding him back. He was seated in a chair, his hands tied behind him, and the realisation alone made him panic. As his vision cleared, Carl observed his condition more clearly. He was covered in numerous cuts and bruises, but somehow they looked treated. He had bandages on parts of his arm and leg, and though he didn't see it, a few on his head too. He also noticed his clothes were torn to shreds, and most importantly, he was chained to a chair in a windowless room. The memories flooded back. He remembered leaving the Adkins mansion, furious after quitting. But barely had he left the estate when he was surrounded by several men capable of matching him. He was al
