Chapter 11 - Reporter's and toxins
Oscar's paranoia worsened the longer he stayed at the bar. He wanted to leave but was too scared to. He had texted Kevin, and despite the assurance that he'd be safe, Oscar hesitated. Then, he made up his mind; he wasn't going to stay at the bar forever; he was bound to go home at some point. So, without further ado, he left the bar and headed toward the highway. He didn't have to look for a taxi because a car was already waiting to pick him up. And just like that, Oscar survived the night, allegedly. Before going to bed, Oscar took some time to review the file that Kevin had sent to him. He obtained Adkins Group's support from the Evermore Conglomerate, dating back twenty-three years ago when they had signed under the company. He saw how much the Evermore Conglomerate had poured into making the Adkins what they were today, as well as the returns, and that's thirty per cent of Adkins Group's total revenue. He had yet to tell Kevin why he
Chapter 12 - The great oak neighbourhood
The oak tree was just down from the neighbourhood, and it's a significant landmark from which the neighbourhood derived its name. As Donald approached the oak tree with deliberate steps, his eyes remained fixed on the Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 parked underneath. He was in awe, but already expected it. Certainly, a man willing to purchase his apartment for double its price wasn't just rich, but wealthy. He tried peeking to see if the driver's side was open and if there was anyone inside but saw no one. However, before he reached the oak tree, the car door opened, and a tall man in a black two-piece designer suit stepped out. His black shoes shimmered, and his hair was perfectly relaxed, resting on his shoulder. He stood erect, resting one arm on the door frame before taking off his glasses to reveal those deep brown eyes."Who are you looking for?" he asked Donald, his tone sharp. It didn't make sense why the landlord was looking around while he was standing ri
Chapter 13 - The last rented game
The room was thrown into pin-drop silence. Oscar and Kevin were staring at each other while Donald was staring at them. While Oscar didn't know how to respond and remained silent, hoping for Kevin to somehow tell him what to do, Kevin just wanted to maintain the suspense long enough for the landlord to ask..."Your boss?" He almost laughed at the joke because it seemed like one. To him, Kevin seemed too wealthy to be anyone's servant, let alone Oscar Wellington. "I like your sense of humour," he added and turned to Oscar."You can start packing up your things, Wellington...""Did you not hear what I just told you, Donald?" Kevin interjected. This time, his tone was harsh, and he seemed very displeased. "I have just found my boss, and you think it's a joke?" Quickly, his gaze shifted to Oscar. He drew closer and touched his face and hair. "It's really you, sir, I can't believe it.""What are you doing?" Oscar managed to whisper when he ha
Chapter 14 - Adkin's paranoia
Just a while ago, the Adkin family mansion was crowded with cops, investigators, and reporters who were not allowed past the gates. Mr Adkin did not see why this was such a big case for both the police and the reporters, and he did not want to taint his image by acknowledging his relationship with the deceased man.He denied all claims and even got upset when the officers asked him to write a statement. "Why should I do that?" he shouted, staring the cops in the eye, his shoulders raised with power and pride."I don't know him; it's as simple as that. If an account linked to the company sent money to him, then trace the account itself. I have hundreds of staff."There was nothing they could do to get a statement from the Adkins, and it started to raise suspicion about what he really had going on underneath. The cops and investigators did not press further; they had no solid evidence against him, so until they did, Adkins was as free as a bird.Onc
Chapter 15 - Promoted and fired
Summer 2016,It's safe to say that Oscar worked as a toilet cleaner for nearly six months, losing a few bucks and gaining a few. He made friends along the way and was so diligent that General Norman often rewarded him with a few extra dollars, shoes, and clothes. If he had an appliance that he no longer needed but was still useful, he gave it to Oscar and often recommended him to people who needed home services. This helped Oscar save a lot of money, enough to pay off all his debts, and he was still left with enough to survive. As for Pam's family, he never visited them again after her father broke his wine; he was too scared to show his face to the man, else he'd be tossed across the room and broken this time. Pam did not break up with him even after the incident, and she never stopped visiting, even while he was sharing an apartment with an old lady by Allen's Lake. However, Pam had talked him into going to see her parents one more time, and rig
Chapter 16 - Caring is a weakness
Pam's car was parked underneath the same tree as when she came to pick up her boyfriend. She had been apologising all the way, and no matter how Oscar promised that he wasn't upset, she insisted."Well, at least there is some kind of progress," Oscar remarked. "Who knows, the next time I visit, they'll let me sleep over."Pam rolled her eyes. "Just forget that; let's get to the..." She was immediately interrupted when Oscar's phone rang out. Judging by the contact, Oscar was curious, wondering what he had done wrong or what job the store manager had for him.Pam silently listened to his conversation over the phone. The conversation was brief and ended with Oscar looking upset and confused."I don't understand, sir. I did not mistreat anyone in the subway.""It must have been a mix... I'm not lying, sir, it's the truth... sir, sir." The call had already been disconnected, and Oscar turned to his girlfriend, the phone still glued
Chapter 17 - The new big-boss
At 10 a.m. the next morning, Ken walked into the store looking very excited. No one knew exactly why, and they didn't bother asking. He went about touching the shelves, the chairs, and the table to ensure that not a single speck of dirt or dust was found on them.Curiosity rippled through the air, and the staff did not cease talking about it; those who knew how close Grace was to him urged her to find out what the excitement was all about. Someone else didn't care much about the boss's joy, but his little college buddy wouldn't stop talking about it."He's been smiling all over!" Sammy uttered, pacing around the closet like a detective looking for clues. "Like he's got a raise or something; maybe the big boss promoted him... but what position is higher than the manager?""CEO," Oscar chuckled, "I wonder why you bother thinking about it. He is only this excited because someone else has bought the store; there's a new big boss, and apparently he's wealthier
Chapter 18 - One resilient journalist
Same day Sarah arrived at work a little bit later than usual. Her eyes seemed a bit puffy, and despite the makeup, it was almost impossible to overlook the darker skin under her eyes. Clearly, she had skipped a night's sleep and had come to work anyway."Are you alright?" Her coworkers asked. Her name was Ellie, and she worked in the editorial department. Her hand went over Sarah's face, trailing down her cheek. "Your eyes, Jesus Christ, Sarah, are you sick? You should see a doctor!""I'm fine, Ellen," she uttered, faking a smile, "I've just been up all night trying to get this information." While speaking, Sarah put her handbag down on the desk and took out a pile of white papers with writing and pictures. "I sent a soft copy to your email, but I brought these anyway."Ellen's jaw dropped as she looked at the papers, flipping through them as she read. "You were investigating...""Hush!" Sarah quieted her. She snatched the papers immediately and hid them underneath her desk. "I am ju
Chapter 19 - The lady in the hotel
Despite his early preparations, Oscar was asked to wait for over an hour before leaving the apartment. The crew had set up a bunch of security protocols to make sure he wasn't followed, as well as to keep no one outside the Evermore Conglomerate from knowing where he was.Oscar used the time to sign a few documents after reviewing them; this document was to be sent over to the Adkins as a warning, or rather a strike before the flames. Oscar wanted them to feel the same fear they made him feel, the hopelessness that comes with looking up to a man in a higher position and getting disgraced.Once his electronic signature was obtained, he sent the documents back to Kevin, who was responsible for ensuring they went through the proper channels and were delivered to the Adkins. Although Oscar hadn't told him anything, Kevin knew he had unsettled scores with the Adkins and only did as he was told. While it may seem that he had settled into his new role as CEO of the Evermore Conglomerate, one
Chapter 20 - Unexpected guest
The great oak neighbourhood, a few hundred meters after the oak tree itself, a familiar figure stood at Donald's doorstep, his eyes narrowing. He cracked his knuckles and twisted his neck as though he was preparing for a fight with the Landlord himself. One knock on the old man's door and he came rushing out like an angry lion, the same way he did when asking for rent. "You'll pay for breaking down my... Donald's words caught in his throat when his gaze fell upon the tall, mafia-boss-like human standing before him. Outrageous bodybuild and an otherworldly frown —Carl did not look bad at all intimidating. "Can we talk?" He simply asked. Ordinarily, he would have forced his way into the man's house the same way he did with Oscar's, but not now, a little respect wouldn't hurt, would it? Donald looked him up and down, he couldn't shake off the fact that this man was trouble. "Is there a problem?" "It's about one of your tenants," Carl replied gesturing that he wanted to go i
