Chapter Fifty-One: Sorted Out
Amber’s heartbeat pounded heavily as Jake’s eyes remained on her throughout the meeting. Kate had shown up unexpectedly at the company and requested for a short meeting with the head of each department. Only Vince and Gabriella were the lower staff at the meeting but it didn’t matter. Everyone assumed they showed up for the CEO. “I called this meeting to address an important problem. Maybe you aren’t all aware, I am a tough old lady and even in my bedridden state, I still get to know everything happening in Peak Hills.” Most of the staff started exchanging curious looks. That didn’t stop Kate. It was the exact thing she wanted. When she had raised the topic of Vince revealing his identity, he had begged for a longer time. But she knew he didn’t have that as Vince Finn, the desk clerk because the petitions against him were enormous and couldn't be ignored for much longer. “Mr Lance, please bring the papers.” Tension rose in the room. Everyone knew Kate’s bodyguard Lance and h
Chapter Fifty-Two: Just After Dinner
“What do you mean that your last trip to Paris was funded by your boss?” Amber screamed out in annoyance. The man sitting opposite her looked around embarrassed. He turned to face her and calmly explained himself. “You are screaming Amber.” He adjusted his eyeglasses and whispered, “What I mean is, I can't spend my life savings on lavish trips like that, I mean, I have to be prudent.” “Prudent!” Amber scoffed loudly. The man adjusted uncomfortably on his seat, “Prudent of course, aren’t you a lawyer? You should know better about how things work.” Another miserable miser spotted! Amber thought dejectedly! She had always known how things worked, of course. It had made her choose Vince, then Bernard, but now, she didn’t need a poor excuse of a good man to be with anyone. She rather wanted one that could spoil her silly, with gifts and luxury. Arguing with the loser seemed pointless. This was her sixth blind date in two months. It was starting to feel annoying when she ended up g
Chapter Fifty-Three: Cold Stare
A knock sounded at the door and Jake frowned as he reluctantly got off the bed. His head was pounding hard from the hangover but he managed to move towards the door. It was a weekend and he hadn’t expected any disturbance but he knew he couldn’t fight whoever it was because everyday was work hours for him. He turned the door knob and forced it open to be faced by a familiar hefty figure. Lance stood there in all his mightiness. His eyes travelled down Jake’s open upper torso but he wore his usual expressionless gaze. “What is the occasion Mr Lance?” Jake asked, rubbing his eyes. “Get dressed, Mrs Finn called for you.” Jake’s heart pounded hard. This was the third time Kate would personally request his presence and the first two times it happened, the woman had purposely called him to intimidate him with her stern looks. They had always pretended to be warm to each other at Peak Hills but at home, he tried his best to avoid her. “I will be down in ten minutes.” Jake affirmed.
Chapter Fifty-Four: The Company Picnic
Amber’s eyes scanned her reflection in the mirror. She still found the turquoise bikini weird looking but she wasn’t willing to change it. It was newly launched the previous week and she would only assume other girls would stare. She picked up her transparent floral scarf and tied it vertically along her waistline down her hip. “This should do, Amber Reed.” She said to her reflection in the mirror as she applied a lip gloss and smiled softly. The moment she opened the restroom door, two other ladies who had been waiting outside eyed her maliciously. She had merely excused herself to change into her bikini, now she had literally spent the whole day there preventing others from entry. Amber walked past them happily, she was humming a favorite tune to herself. She was right, the ladies' attitudes showed that they were envious of her limited edition bikini. She adjusted her stride of movement as she walked into the afternoon sun. The fluffiness of the beach soil graced her feet.
Chapter Fifty-Five: Loss!
“I am sorry, Mr Finn.”Jake patted Vince on the shoulder. Harsh reality dawned slowly on him.Vince remained stoic on the scene and watched Lance lift Kate’s lifeless body from the bed. The family doctor was still by her bedside packing up his kits. His mind was disconnected from the rest of the world. Lance kept yelling to the other bodyguards but Vince was too shocked on the spot to hear it.Thirty minutes earlier, they were on the beach all in merriment but here they were, mourning a woman he had exchanged a goodbye with earlier that day. “Mr Finn, we have to go now.” Lance said loudly, cutting into Vince’s mind. He shook himself and followed them without a word. Jake, who had left the beach party immediately after Vince did, also followed them into the car.Despite Kate’s illness, she didn’t seem to be in immediate danger of sudden death, so her demise raised so many questions especially from Lance who had always been by her side. If he wasn’t obliged to attend the birthday pa
Chapter Fifty-Six: Is It Goodbye, Mr Finn?
“Did you hear what I said Mr Finn?” Lance said slowly. Lance was starting to get frustrated by Vince’s silence but he still maintained his professional tone. Vince on the other hand still carried the same shocked expression he had on, since the previous day when Kate’s death was announced. “Give me time.” He finally responded. “There is no time Mr Finn, Mrs Finn had insisted that you follow her last request before her death and it cannot be delayed because…..” “It was a request, Mr Lance.” Vince cut in. “She didn’t give me an order, which made it more of a choice on my part whether to follow or not!” Vince’s cold voice retorted. He had been trying to think since the previous day but everyone seemed to be interrupting his line of thinking. The internet had been on fire with a strong controversy of whether Kate Finn had died a natural death or was murdered. That bothered Vince more than the fact that Gabriella had stated his grandmother’s last request. “Reveal your true identit
Chapter Fifty-Seven: Close Call
Vince had expected a long term silence. Unfortunately, he didn’t get any of that. He had thought he was going to miss Gabriella’s presence and mourn his grandmother for sometime but none of that was possible with the heavy weight that fell on his shoulder, immediately after Kate Finn’s cremation.Kate had specifically left the instruction that her burial should be private, less glamorous and short. She had made her lawyer draft a formal document stating this very request. Vince didn’t have any objections to this but some of their extended family members went against it. They believed Kate’s glamorous burial would attract big names in the society thereby creating an avenue for networking as it is usually done in that social strata. Jake Darius had to face so much hate in a bid to stick to Kate’s request which eventually became a reality.A week after the burial, they had both returned to Peak Hill and this time, Lance had to take Gabriella’s place, not as a secretary but as a bodyg
Chapter Fifty-Eight: Grounded
“Get him out of there.” “He is still breathing.” “Bring the oxygen tank now!” The words echoed continuously in Vince’s head. He managed to raise himself up from the bed and looked around him. He was in the VIP ward of the hospital, the exact same room Kate was admitted when she lost consciousness in the past. Vince couldn’t ascertain if the voices in his head were from his memory of the car crash accident, or if it was merely a fragment of his imagination. But his bandaged wrist was enough evidence to show that he was definitely in a bad shape. He tried to get off the bed but unfortunately he couldn’t move his legs. The heavy bandage around it baffled him so much and he wondered if he was ever going to be able to walk again. He was still wallowing in the pain of his predicament when the door bursted open. Mr Smith, the Finn family doctor walked in with a huge smile on his face. “You are right on time Mr Finn, I knew you should be awake by now. How are you feeling?” “Terribl
Chapter Fifty-Nine: Throw The Bait
A knock sounded at the front pouch which annoyed Bernard. He struggled to get out of bed which had been his safe haven. For a few days now he had been suffering from unending headaches and anxiety but he managed to put himself together at work. He picked up his pajama trouser that he had left by his bedside and hurriedly put it on to cover his lower torso. Immediately he walked into his living room, his eyes scanned the entire place which looked to be covered with dust. The unkempt appearance made him feel ashamed. He hadn’t had any visitors in months since Amber ended their relationship and he could no longer afford to pay the housekeeper. He went straight to the door and when he drew it open, two policemen stood there, their eyes scanned through him. “Bernard Harris?” The one on the left questioned with a raised brow. “What is the occasion?” Bernard responded rudely. The two men exchanged knowing looks and the giant one by the right side moved towards Bernard. Before he cou
Chapter Sixty: The Imposter
Amber hissed loudly as she dropped her phone call. Her eyes drew down at the strip she was holding. If there was anyone with bad timing, it definitely was always Bernard Harris. She imagined what fucked up fantasy was going through his head when he decided to employ her as his defense attorney against the very company where she worked. Her heart thumped loudly in her chest as she looked at the strip again, just like the previous day. It had two lines. The reality of her situation came with a mixed feeling for her. She imagined five different scenarios of having to confront Vince Finn, the CEO, about her pregnancy. Their one enjoyable night of passion which they had both been pretending that it didn’t happen, had finally led to a bigger deal. He had asked her in the past if she had used a birth control pill the night they had sex and she had lied about using one. Unknown to her that her supposedly past ovulation had actually shifted forward that month. She held her belly butt
