Chapter Fifty-Four: The Company Picnic
Amber’s eyes scanned her reflection in the mirror. She still found the turquoise bikini weird looking but she wasn’t willing to change it. It was newly launched the previous week and she would only assume other girls would stare. She picked up her transparent floral scarf and tied it vertically along her waistline down her hip. “This should do, Amber Reed.” She said to her reflection in the mirror as she applied a lip gloss and smiled softly. The moment she opened the restroom door, two other ladies who had been waiting outside eyed her maliciously. She had merely excused herself to change into her bikini, now she had literally spent the whole day there preventing others from entry. Amber walked past them happily, she was humming a favorite tune to herself. She was right, the ladies' attitudes showed that they were envious of her limited edition bikini. She adjusted her stride of movement as she walked into the afternoon sun. The fluffiness of the beach soil graced her feet.
Chapter Fifty-Three: Cold Stare
A knock sounded at the door and Jake frowned as he reluctantly got off the bed. His head was pounding hard from the hangover but he managed to move towards the door. It was a weekend and he hadn’t expected any disturbance but he knew he couldn’t fight whoever it was because everyday was work hours for him. He turned the door knob and forced it open to be faced by a familiar hefty figure. Lance stood there in all his mightiness. His eyes travelled down Jake’s open upper torso but he wore his usual expressionless gaze. “What is the occasion Mr Lance?” Jake asked, rubbing his eyes. “Get dressed, Mrs Finn called for you.” Jake’s heart pounded hard. This was the third time Kate would personally request his presence and the first two times it happened, the woman had purposely called him to intimidate him with her stern looks. They had always pretended to be warm to each other at Peak Hills but at home, he tried his best to avoid her. “I will be down in ten minutes.” Jake affirmed.
Chapter Fifty-Two: Just After Dinner
“What do you mean that your last trip to Paris was funded by your boss?” Amber screamed out in annoyance. The man sitting opposite her looked around embarrassed. He turned to face her and calmly explained himself. “You are screaming Amber.” He adjusted his eyeglasses and whispered, “What I mean is, I can't spend my life savings on lavish trips like that, I mean, I have to be prudent.” “Prudent!” Amber scoffed loudly. The man adjusted uncomfortably on his seat, “Prudent of course, aren’t you a lawyer? You should know better about how things work.” Another miserable miser spotted! Amber thought dejectedly! She had always known how things worked, of course. It had made her choose Vince, then Bernard, but now, she didn’t need a poor excuse of a good man to be with anyone. She rather wanted one that could spoil her silly, with gifts and luxury. Arguing with the loser seemed pointless. This was her sixth blind date in two months. Chapter Fifty-One: Sorted Out
Amber’s heartbeat pounded heavily as Jake’s eyes remained on her throughout the meeting. Kate had shown up unexpectedly at the company and requested for a short meeting with the head of each department. Only Vince and Gabriella were the lower staff at the meeting but it didn’t matter. Everyone assumed they showed up for the CEO. “I called this meeting to address an important problem. Maybe you aren’t all aware, I am a tough old lady and even in my bedridden state, I still get to know everything happening in Peak Hills.” Most of the staff started exchanging curious looks. That didn’t stop Kate. It was the exact thing she wanted. When she had raised the topic of Vince revealing his identity, he had begged for a longer time. But she knew he didn’t have that as Vince Finn, the desk clerk because the petitions against him were enormous and couldn't be ignored for much longer. “Mr Lance, please bring the papers.” Tension rose in the room. Kate laid back on the sofa, her back hurt so much despite the constant massage she got. She knew it was nearing the time for another chemotherapy session which was starting to tire her out. The call she had just dropped from thirty minutes earlier saddened her heart more. She picked up her notepad and scribbled something on it. She was starting to get forgetful as a side effect of some of her medications. Just as she had condemned Vince’s mother in the past, he was facing the same problem at the company which hurt her badly. Kate couldn’t bear the thought of everything as her mind pushed forward the image of having him hated by everyone. When they finally found out his identity, were they going to quit? There was no way he could be CEO if everyone was against him. The board of directors wouldn’t allow him either. Knowing that she had limited time alive saddened her heart the more. Vince struggled to get out of bed that morning. He hadn’t been having enough sleep and his pounding head was enough proof of that. His instinct was to return to bed but he knew if he did, things might definitely go wrong. Jake had called him severely the previous night, he was already deep asleep. But when he could no longer ignore the loud blaring of his phone, he picked it up.“Mr Finn, it was a trap.”Vince’s sleepy eyes twitched awake.
