31. MISDIRECTION
Liam's POVAfter everything that had happened with Ashley and the revelation about the Ndrangheta, I was still trying to process how deep the danger actually went when Michael started applauding me slowly from across the room."What are you clapping for?" I asked, exhausted and irritated. Before Michael could answer, I heard footsteps approaching from multiple directions and suddenly the rest of the Rossi household members came around the corner. There must have been at least a dozen of them, all looking solemn and serious as they gathered in front of where I was standing. One of the older men who I recognized from the oath taking ceremony stepped forward and spoke first."We heard about Ashley's betrayal," he said, and I could hear genuine regret in his voice. "We apologize for not seeing it sooner and for not protecting you better."The others nodded in agreement and then one by one they each pledged their loyalty to me, vowing that they would serve me faithfully as the Don and woul
32. THE TRUTH ABOUT FAMILY
Liam's POVOn my way out I met Claire who stopped me and said something about the malware being restored, but I couldn't focus on what she was saying because Michael's words kept echoing in my head. You're surrounded by enemies, Liam. Every person around me could be working against me and I wouldn't even know it until it was too late.I got into my car and drove toward the mansion as fast as the engine would go, weaving through traffic and running yellow lights because every second I wasted could mean the difference between securing the parcel and losing it to whoever was trying to take it from me.When I arrived at the mansion, I rushed inside and took the elevator to the top floor where I had left the parcel in a secure room. The elevator doors opened and I stepped out to find Michael standing there waiting for me, his clothes completely soaked in blood that clearly wasn't his own.My eyes immediately went down to the floor and I saw Ashley lying there motionless with blood pooling
33. NO WAY BACK
Liam's POVI angrily left, got in my car, and drove off…I was thinking about everything that had happened with my father and trying to process the conversation we had just finished when I realized too late that I had drifted into the wrong lane.A massive trailer was coming straight toward me and I could see the driver's panicked face as he laid on the horn.I jerked the steering wheel hard to the right and felt my tires screech against the pavement as I barely managed to get out of the way with maybe two seconds to spare. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears and my hands were shaking as I pulled over to the side of the road to catch my breath.I couldn't go back to the mansion because of everything that had occurred there with Ashley's body still lying on the floor and Michael's blood soaked clothes and all the questions I didn't have answers for yet.I couldn't go to Elijah's place either because he would ask me questions about what was happening and I wasn't re
34. THE WEIGHT OF MEMORY
Elijah's POVI sat there listening to Liam talk about the Ndrangheta like they were just another problem he needed to solve and I felt my chest getting tighter with each word he spoke. He had no idea what he was dealing with and I couldn't make him understand because he hadn't lived through what I had lived through. The Ndrangheta had killed my parents when I was twelve years old. I remembered coming home from school and finding police cars outside our house and neighbors standing around whispering to each other.I remembered the detective kneeling down to my level and telling me that my mom and dad weren't coming back. I remembered the funeral where no one would tell me exactly what had happened because they thought I was too young to handle the truth. But I found out eventually. My parents had witnessed something they shouldn't have witnessed and they paid for it with their lives. The organization that killed them was so powerful that no one was ever arrested and no investigation eve
35. THE STRANGER AT THE DOOR
Liam's POVI noticed Elijah holding onto the couch with both hands while gripping it so tightly. Something was wrong with him and I could tell even from across the room that he wasn't doing well. When I got closer to where he was standing, I saw that he was sweating profusely and his entire body was shaking like he was having some kind of seizure or panic attack. Sweat was dripping down his face and soaking through his shirt and I had never seen him look this bad before.I reached out to help him and put my hand on his shoulder to steady him because it looked like he was about to collapse. But the moment I touched him, Elijah spun around with something sharp in his hand and I felt a sudden burning pain in my side.I looked down and saw the calligraphy pen I had left on the chair where I had been sleeping earlier stabbed into my body just below my ribs. Blood was already starting to seep through my shirt around where the pen had penetrated and I couldn't believe what was happening.I k
36. A PERSONAL VENDETTA
Liam's POVThe stranger stood there looking down at me in my hospital bed and his expression was completely emotionless as he delivered his next words."I ought to kill you right now," he said calmly, as if discussing the weather rather than my murder. "But I won't do that today."He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small envelope which he placed on the table beside my bed."I'm giving you a lifeline," he continued. "When you leave this hospital, you need to make sure you kill off the Harringtons. All of them."Without my consent, my heart beats faster than usual as I tried to understand what he was asking me to do and why he would want an entire family dead."And you also need to kill Elijah," he added."Why?" I demanded, though my voice came out weaker than I wanted because of the pain medication still affecting me.The stranger didn't answer my question. He simply turned and walked out of my hospital room as silently as he had entered, leaving me alone with the envel
37. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Liam's POVI realized as I listened to the stranger talk about my grandfather that maybe this man was on a personal mission of revenge rather than being sent by the Ndrangheta as part of some larger organizational strategy. This felt too personal and too focused on my specific family to be just another business operation.I needed to satisfy my curiosity about whether he was acting alone or following orders from someone higher up in the organization."Are you doing this on your own or did the Ndrangheta send you?" I asked directly. The stranger looked at me with amusement in his eyes and replied, "Curiosity kills the cat."His non answer told me everything I needed to know and I realized that sitting here in my bed like a victim waiting to be told what to do was not going to help me survive this situation. Nothing would be worse than death and if I was going to die anyway, I might as well die acting like someone who deserved the power and money I had inherited rather than cowering in
38. FRIENDS AND FOES
Liam's POVI didn't answer either. I just stared at him. Then he asked another less disturbing question."Where did you hear that name?" he asked carefully. "How did you come across it?"I didn't want to tell him about Ashley or the Rossi family or how I had been threatened multiple times or how I had almost been killed in that car crash that Michael said my father was behind. There were too many things I needed to keep hidden from him until I understood what side he was really on.I didn't know what to do other than lie to him and hope that he would believe whatever story I came up with."I overheard some business associates talking about historical families in the city," I said, making my voice sound casual and curious. "They mentioned the Ackerman name and it sounded familiar to me, like maybe you had mentioned it when I was younger but I couldn't remember the context."My father stared at me for several long seconds and I could see him evaluating whether my explanation made sense
39. DIVIDED LOYALTIES
Liam's POVI followed Ashley and told her to stop…My hand instinctively moved toward the gun I had started carrying since everything spiraled out of control, but I forced myself to keep it at my side because I needed answers more than I needed protection right now."You came alone," Ashley said when I got close enough for me to see her face clearly in the dim streetlight. "That's either very brave or very stupid.""You said you had proof about Michael," I replied, not wanting to waste time with small talk when every minute I spent away from the hotel was another minute something could go wrong. "Show me."Ashley pulled out a tablet from her jacket and swiped through several screens before turning it toward me. The first thing I saw was a map with red dots scattered across it and dates written next to each one."These are locations where attacks against you or the Rossi family happened over the past few weeks," she explained, zooming in on each dot as she spoke. "The warehouse ambush
40. TWO STORIES
Liam's POVMichael stood there waiting for my response to his accusation about Ashley and I felt my head spinning with confusion about who was telling the truth and who was lying to manipulate me into trusting them."We both know Ashley is the traitor." I said, trying to keep my voice steady even though nothing made sense anymore. "But, she just told me the exact same thing about you."Michael's expression didn't change when I said this and he nodded slowly as if he had been expecting me to say exactly that."Of course she did," he replied. "That's how she's been operating this whole time. She feeds you information that makes me look guilty so you'll turn against me and leave yourself vulnerable to her real plans.""She showed me evidence," I said, watching his face carefully for any reaction. "Your location data putting you near every attack that's happened.""Did she show you the full data or just selected pieces that fit her narrative?" Michael asked, pulling out his own phone and
