Chapter Twenty-One
Silence lingered after Elias’s final words, heavy enough to draw every gaze to him.The executives looked uncertain, glancing between one another as if to confirm they’d heard correctly. Only the faint hum of the air-conditioning filled the room. Finally, one of the Halberg representatives gave a short, incredulous laugh.“Begging to survive one? What does that even mean, Mr. Grant?”Elias didn’t rush to answer. His calmness drew the tension in the room tighter by the second. He reached into his pocket, took out his phone, and handed it to Lina, who collected it confusedly. But she didn’t need instruction to know he wanted her to connect it to the screen. She quickly strode over to the projector under everyone’s watchful eyes, and the screen soon changed from the trending post to a flood of recent articles — each headline stacked over the next like dominoes.Regulators Eye Halberg’s Safety Division After Weeks of Silence’‘Leaked Images Suggest Concealed Collapse Data’‘Public Anger M
Chapter Twenty-Two
Mark Danner had been inwardly jubilant, watching Elias cornered from all sides. But when his own name was suddenly mentioned, the color drained from his face.He stiffened, then shot up from his seat. “What are you trying to say?”Elias didn’t even glance at him. His gaze stayed fixed on the executives.“The supervisor responsible for the Halberg case reassigned the project to my team two hours before the deadline,” he said evenly. “There was no briefing, and even the primary case files from the previous team weren’t handed over. When we requested them, we were told it was by the supervisor’s orders. That alone crippled the workflow and risked the company’s response. If we’re talking about authorization, perhaps we should start there.”Every gaze turned toward Danner. He’d been the loudest voice condemning Elias moments ago, and now the shift of attention felt like a noose tightening around his neck.A bead of sweat slid down his templ
Chapter Twenty-Three
LOID: Where the hell did you get this laptop?Elias’s eyes narrowed slightly. He leaned back in his chair and waited. A second message came through almost immediately.LOID: Don’t tell me you stole it from a museum. He typed back with steady fingers.ELIAS: Any problem? The reply came almost immediately.LOID: “Problem”? You could call it that. I haven’t seen this model in years. These things were phased out after the shift to the new encryption protocols.LOID: Took me five minutes just to figure out how to connect it without triggering its defense purge.LOID: Where did you get it?Elias’s eyes narrowed. But, he wasn’t about to start filling Loid in on the details of how he found himself in someone else’s life or who the laptop belonged to. So he simply responded:ELIAS: Top-secret.Loid was not new to his operations as a soldier. He didn’t ask anymore and fired a response back.LOID: The weird part? These units were pulled off the market ages ago. The last batch was bought out ent
Chapter Twenty-Four
“Well, look who finally remembered where he lives.”Margot’s voice was light, almost sweet. But, it was the kind that cut sharper than it sounded.Elias paused just inside the doorway, the faint echo of her words settling through the hall. The dining room glowed beneath a crystal pendant light. Steam curled faintly from the dishes still sitting between half-filled glasses.Lila sat beside her mother, posture immaculate, her face unreadable. Across from them, Thomas was nursing a glass of wine, and Owen’s phone glowed under the table until Margot shot him a look.Elias inclined his head slightly. “Evening.”He didn’t add anything else.He moved toward his usual seat at the end of the table, unbuttoned his jacket, and sat down without waiting for an invitation. The quiet was thick enough to taste.Margot clicked her tongue. “Evening? That’s all?” She leaned back, eyes narrowing. “You wander in past six like a tenant, not a husband. What exactly do you do all day, Sebastian? Because it s
Chapter Twenty-Five
The morning air still clung faintly to him when Elias stepped through the doorway, sweat damp at his temples, his breathing steady. He’d gone running before dawn — a habit he hadn’t shaken even after waking in another man’s body.He pulled off his jacket as he entered the living room. But the moment he did, he immediately sensed the tension in the room. It was as thick as smoke.Thomas was pacing near the window, phone in hand. Lila sat rigid on the couch, one leg crossed neatly over the other, and scrolling through her phone or pretending to. Margot’s voice carried sharp and shrill from the dining area. Owen leaned against the counter, half-listening, half-waiting to throw in his own jabs.Elias wasn’t surprised; he’d checked his phone too and already knew that Halberg was in trouble. The regulators’ report had dropped an hour ago.Words like “gross negligence” and “safety violations” were already trending. The ceiling collapse, once a tragic accident, was now branded as corporate ca

Beaumont Family Manor The atmosphere inside the Beaumont mansion was suffocating. The chandelier above cast a sterile, golden light that did nothing to soften the cold expressions surrounding the long mahogany table. Every branch of the family was present. And for the second time in weeks, the second branch sat beneath the scrutiny of the other branches. They sat at the far end of the long table, their figures heavy with exhaustion. Lila’s fingers were drumming once against the armrest and she seemed to be thinking even though her eyes were bloodshot from the lack of sleep. Across from them, the first and third branches whispered amongst themselves with barely concealed satisfaction. On the far side, Elias leaned back in his chair, quiet as a shadow. The meeting had come unannounced but it was obvious it must be because of the scandal that just took over the internet once more. It had become worse than it originally started and Halberg’s stock price had fallen to its all-time
Chapter Twenty-Seven
“Wait.”It was Lila. She finally looked up, her gaze falling on her mother first. It was a look of reproach which seemed to snuff out the older lady’s anger. She coughed before taking a seat embarrassedly, belatedly realizing that she had only embarrassed their family more.Lila then turned to the rest of the group and her words were straight to the point. “It has nothing to do with him.”At first, everyone looked confused upon hearing that. One was saying it was him and the other said it wasn’t. Then who was being honest?Beatrice quickly seized the chance to mock Lila. “Eh… I didn’t know you two were so close now. You’re actually defending him.”Lila’s sharp gaze immediately turned toward this cousin of hers harshly. The latter seemed pleased with herself to have irked her but as usual, Lila simply kept her composure as she faced the elders.“I’m in charge of the crisis control,” she said as a matter of factly, “Since this happened under my watch. I take full responsibility for it.”

“We won’t sign.” The silence that followed was deafening. Lila’s words fell sharply like a glass dropped in a silent room, and everyone froze. Her palm was still pressed flat against the table, her knuckles faintly white. When she finally moved, it was only to reach forward, take the folder, and in one clean motion — tear it straight down the middle. The sound ripped through the air. Edward’s smile vanished at once. “Lila—!” She didn’t even look at him. The torn halves fluttered from her hands and scattered over the polished table. “You’ve gone mad!” Lena gasped. “That was a legal draft from—” “From you?” Lila’s voice was cold, her tone almost too calm. “Then take it back.” Lena’s lips parted, but nothing came out. Edward quickly composed himself, folding his hands together. “Let’s not be impulsive. We’re all family here. You’re young, and you might not see it clearly, but what we’re suggesting is to save your father’s branch, not destroy it.” He spoke with the ease of some

The gala was too loud for Lila’s mood.Crystal laughter, soft music, champagne flutes. It was all noise to her.She didn’t want to be here. But after the family confrontation, Thomas had quietly said it would be “good optics” to show that their branch was still standing.Lila stayed near the edge of the ballroom, speaking when she had to, nodding at greetings she barely heard. The whispers had already started since the regulators’ announcement; half the people here were discussing Halberg behind their polite smiles.Margot, of course, had insisted on accompanying her. She was in her element, gliding between conversations, smiling too widely, trying to hold what was left of their social standing together.“Lila.”The voice that came from behind her was familiar, and completely unwelcome. She turned.Noel Varenn stood a few steps away, a glass in hand and his usual annoying, slippery smirk plastered on his face.Of course Lila knew him.He had been chasing her for years, but she had nev

The shout still hung in the air when the door opened.Lila stepped in, her coat still half on, her expression freezing at the scene before her.Her mother standing, flushed and trembling. Her father with his hand pressed to his forehead.Owen stiff near the couch. And Elias, silent by the window as if none of it concerned him.“What’s going on?” she asked quietly, closing the door behind her.Margot turned sharply. “You’re just in time. Tell him what he’s done to this family.”Lila blinked once, confused. “What are you talking about?”“What am I talking about?” Margot’s voice rose again. “You should be asking him that. Do you have any idea how people were laughing at us yesterday? After everything he’s done, we can barely hold our heads up!”Thomas’s voice came tiredly from the chair. “Margot, enough. We’ve been through this.”But Lila’s eyes had narrowed slightly. “Yesterday?”Margot’s lips pressed together. That slight hesitation was all Lila needed.“You met Noel Varenn,” she said
