CHAPTER 1: THE HUSTLE
At 3 a.m just before dawn, he sat on his cranky favorite chair just beside his bed at the corner of the room working on his laptop, lines of codes flashing over his face with a couple of bugs beautifully visible in red, which he had to deal with before calling it a day.It was the fourth morning of a trial and error campaign - scavenging codes from various forums and github repositories. Building what he calls The Algorithm a prediction software he saw as a one way ticket out of poverty.A nursing student at the top of his class in his third year at the university, who wasn't vast in programming but had utmost passion for coding and trading. "Perfect!" he said, with a tired voice, twenty five minutes past 4 a.m with his heavy eyes, dim as the lamp on his table. Heavy noise coming from his fan like it was screaming for salvation, disturbing his roommate, Phililp, who was already far gone in his sleep. Strong disturbing smell coming out the window of his room, which he never seemed to
CHAPTER 2: A GLITCH OR GIFT?
A minute of deafening silence slapped him on the face, eyes wide open, his soul out of his body. His body became stiff like the hour hand on the wall clock. He can't believe what he just heard from Philip."Fire!! Fire!! You need to come out now!!What are you waiting for?! Desmond!" Philip's voice tore through the room. Hands trembling. "No, no, no, no, no" he kept whispering with fear in his voice. He felt Philip's hand grab him by the collar of his shirt, pulling him out of the room immediately. At the corridor, right in the middle of the chaos and cries for help from the other students, he pushes Desmond a little with anger and fear in his eyes."What is wrong with you?!" he asked, shaking him back to reality. "The Common Room is on fire, we need to leave the building now or do you want to die?!"They aimed for the emergency exit at the back of the hostel very close to their room, leaving behind everything and prioritized their safety first. The other students in the hostel were
CHAPTER 3: THE FIRST CHOICE
He didn't sleep. It was morning again, the night rolled away much faster than it's ever done. The atmosphere in the hostel had gone back to normal after the fire incident - footsteps echoing against the wall, students shouting and playing in the corridor - everything felt normal again, but not to Desmond.Every sound, footsteps, was sharper and louder by the second, he could hear his own heartbeats.Philip woke up, yawning like he worked at a site overnight. "Crazy night, huh?" he said, Desmond didn't respond, sitting on his bed observing every move Philip makes. "Well, mine was" he added. "First the fire, to lectures on how we sleep? God knows what's gonna happen today" as he was wearing his slippers to leave the room. Desmond who was just watching, let out a grin as a response to Philip. Philip came back from the bathroom, tripping after removing his slippers. Desmond's heart jumped, and Philip made a joke out of it, saying he was fine, silently noticing Desmond's odd behavior.
CHAPTER 4: THE WATCHER
The outcome he just saw seized his breathe. His mind caged in fear, the words Altered by Individual (User) kept lingering in his head even after shutting down the laptop."Des, what's going on?" Philip asked, still shaken from the fact he just escaped death."I'm.....being monitored", staring into thin air with his eyes wide open. "What have I gotten myself into? I'm being monitored!" His voice already shaky, bursting into tears. "Chill out man, I'm sure it's all BS. There's no way that's possible" Philip, filled with doubt, stands up from his bed. "You wanna know what I think? All these, the accident outside, someone monitoring you? They're all fake man, none of this is real. Stop acting like you're in a horror movie, haha"While at it, Desmond heard footsteps approaching, then it suddenly stopped."Did you hear that?" Desmond cuts him shut."Hear what? Just find something meaningful to do man, don't waste your time on nothing" Philip shrugged. The footsteps continued, this time ea
CHAPTER 5: THE KNOCK
The door opened and it was his love interest, standing at the door with her eyes scanning over the scattered room. She came in a hurry to deliver the information that the chemistry practical scheduled for 2 p.m would now hold at 3 p.m the next day. "Thanks Esther, we'll keep that in mind" Desmond said smiling sheepishly after he saw her eyes scanning through his room. As she was about leaving, Philip senses clicked and said "It's 3 p.m!! Desmond, it's 3 p.m" Desmond and Esther said together "yes, by 3 p.m" Philip said "no, no, Desmond, 3 p.m!!" Immediately, Desmond too snapped and remembered what he was talking about. "Oh, shit!!" he said. Esther, confused as to what was going on, asked what the matter was. Desmond, quickly closing the door on her, said "nothing, nothing, we'll keep it in mind, thanks again""What the hell?! We're the victims! We're gonna be the one in the building by then!" "Shit shit shit" Desmond’s steps traced frantic circles across the room, hands tugging a
CHAPTER 6: THE GLIMPSE
Desmond's brain was working overtime and as a result, he blanks out for a few seconds, just five minutes to the Algorithm's prediction, in that moment, his vision fractured — flashes of a leaking pipe, the hiss of invisible gas, a spark near a burner. No sound, only flashes, like memories of a future - and that gave him a solution, a way of preventing the explosion from happening. Philip wasn't even paying attention any longer, just silently saying his last prayers waiting for it to end.He snapped back to reality, dashing out of the laboratory without taking permission from the lecturer. Philip who was frozen in his seat, and couldn't move his legs to follow Desmond just stared as he ran out. Desmond ran straight to the gas room where the gases and chemicals are kept. On getting there, he found a gas pipe that was already leaking, located the valve and closed it, stopping the gas from leaking the more. He ran back to the lab, at the exact moment the lecturer was about to turn on the
CHAPTER 7: THE OBSERVER
It was a cold and windy night outside, the whole hostel was quiet, most of the students already deep in their sleep, but the two were still fully awake, far from sleep. As Desmond stands up to approach the door wanting to figure out who or what was standing behind the door, the shadow moves backwards, further away from the door, as if it was trying to draw them out of the room. Philip was trying to whisper to Desmond, to call him back. "Des, Des, what are you doing, come back here". He didn't listen, very determined to find out who it was, after the shadow has already appeared twice at their doorstep. On opening the door, he didn't see anything."What just happened? It was just right here!"The shadow disappeared immediately the door creaked open. But Desmond noticed something, something white was on the floor. He looked at it closely and saw it was a piece of paper laying on their door mat. "Phil, Phil, there's a paper on the floor" calling Philip who was already getting up from
CHAPTER 8: THE CONFRONTATION
The next morning felt unusually heavy, like the air itself had grown thicker overnight. Desmond dragged himself out of bed, his head still full of the paper’s chilling words: Physical confrontation imminent. Philip was quieter than usual, his sarcasm and playful jabs were absent as they prepared for their morning class. They avoided talking about last night and the message on the paper but they both knew whatever it was, was waiting for them. The weight of the thoughts lingered in their minds like dark heavy clouds hovering over their heads. It was just past noon when the first sign came. Desmond noticed a figure across the faculty's courtyard, standing still under the shade of the almond tree. At first glance, he thought it was just another student, but then on a proper look, he noticed the figure wasn't moving - not pressing a phone, not talking to anyone. Just still....staring in their direction."Phil, Phil! He whispered, tilting his head to look out the window. "Don't move your
CHAPTER 9: THE SEARCH
They were already in the final two months of the semester and exams were around the corner. The hostel was empty - most students had gone to the library to read, others in school or wherever they could find themselves. Philip was alone in the room, he chose to read in the hostel because he knew it'd be silent with everyone gone. But his mind couldn’t grab a single sentence. He’d been staring at his notes for over thirty minutes, yet nothing stuck. Memories of everything that had been happening kept replaying in his head, the voice of the man stuck like a broken record: the words, the tone, the warning. Over and over."I can't do this anymore. The more I try to stay away from it, the more louder it gets in my head. What have i got to do with whatever this is....or is it because I saw his face?" He was asking himself, without any luck of getting answers. A risky thought flickered his mind. No, that's not a good idea, that...is...not..a good idea. How do i go about it, and if I'm even
CHAPTER 10: THE BARGAIN
The message on the paper dwells in his mind all night. Even with his eyes shut, he could still see the beautifully written words, Friend of Aeris. You are the key. You've been identified. He turned to his side on the bed, staring at Desmond who was snoring lightly at the other corner of the room. The key to what?By morning, he had already given up on trying to read - nothing was getting through his busy brain. He brought out his pen and began drawing out clues, crude patterns - circles for spots the man has showed himself, arrows for where he vanished. The realization unsettled him: He wasn't random, he was deliberate. He chose those spots.I wonder who he is by the way, or what his name is. It's crazy how he has a hold on us this much. He acts like… like he’s passing judgment with the Algorithm, and we’re pieces on his board..... hmm, Arbiter... that's what I'll call him.The evening cloud was turning really dark more earlier than normal but you could pretty much still see everyth
