CHAPTER 11
While the waitress’s question hung in the air, the two couple eyes remained focused on Darren, patiently waiting for his response. It felt as if his fate were already sealed — whatever he said, their reaction would be the sameFinally Darren nodded once. “Yes.”Immediately they doubled over, laughing uncontrollably like he’d said something funny.“She said ten thousand fool, not ten dollar,” Cory said amidst the laughter. The waitress carefully studied Darren’s reaction – he remained unfazed. The woman blinked hard trying to make a sense of the situation. She turned to the laughing group and inquired, “He said he can pay, then what is so funny?”Samantha stopped laughing and spat, “Miss, you don’t quite know this church rat like we do. There’s no way he can be able to afford anything in this restaurant, not even a bottle of water”.“He makes a living by running local deliveries around the campus on his bicycle for a dollar or two. Sometimes he sleeps empty stomach if he doesn’t have e
CHAPTER 12
Darren frowned, his lips pressing into a thin line. After what happened yesterday, the last thing he wanted to see was Clara’s face. Yet, she acted all cool like she did nothing wrong and kept on taunting him.“Free food for dogs like you, huh?” That was the most upsetting part of the message.Talking of food, only if she could see what he was about to be served. She wouldn’t try to ridicule him with her so called ‘free food’.To prevent these kinds of text messages and insults from happening in the future, Darren tapped on his screen for a few seconds and blocked Clara from reaching him on all social platforms. He didn’t care what she did with her life anymore. When he kept his phone away and looked up, the waiter was approaching his table with the order. But this time it wasn’t just her—she was followed by two other waiters and a man in a black suit. She clutched a bottle of an expensive premium red wine carefully in her hand. The two waiters behind her held the other orders. The m

Samantha’s lips quivered as if trying to repeat the amount but the words wouldn’t just come out of her. She was in terror.Though it was an accident, unfortunately many people didn’t see when she was falling, their attention was drawn to her only when she had already collided with the cart. Genuinely speaking, nobody cared how it actually happened. As if she did not hear him, the manager closed in. Seized her hand and yanked her to her feet. Then he screamed again, “You just damaged food worth $5 million. You will be in so much trouble if you don’t pay. So pay up!”“Security! Get over here!” The man called and immediately two robust men appeared.“Seize her and anyone that came with her, till they pay up the money they are not leaving this place” he instructed firmly.Samantha turned toward the table they were seated and the two guys — Jason and Cory were no where to be found. She blinked. Just a second ago they were there and now they’re gone. The only thing she heard outside was the

“Beggars?” Darren clenched his jaw. Is that what they took him for?“I am actually running late, everyone is waiting for me so that the ceremony can start. You are wasting my time” he explained. The guards exchanged puzzled glances then burst out laughing. Their laughter was derisive and filled with humor.“You are such a funny guy. If we were not on duty we would’ve entertained your jokes,” one of the men said and continued laughing.“I am not joking,” Darren knitted his brows as he tried to go in but the men shoved him back again. This time they’d stop laughing and their faces tightened with seriousness.“If you are indeed a guest like you claim, where is your invitation card?”Darren lowered his head slightly, “I don’t have an invitation card but—”. That was all the men wanted to hear. One of the guard then pushed him away further. “You shouldn’t be standing here so close to the entrance. We are expecting a very special guest — you’ll get us in trouble should our boss see beggars h

Darren located the door labelled number 3. He cross checked in his phone to be sure not to end up in the wrong event hall.Sighing, he pushed the door open and entered.Inside there was a party going on. Young people, some of which he recognized could be seen dancing and having a good time. There was a big banner hanging across the wall that read ‘Happy Birthday, Clara’He looked around there was no sign of Mr. Frank. Frank was the manager of one of Hilton’s company. His grandfather had said the latter would direct him on what to do when he arrived. He then called his grandfather. “Grandpa, I can’t seem to find Mr. Frank. You said he’ll be here waiting for me,” he complained.“Yes my boy. But unfortunately he encountered traffic on his way and got delayed. Exercise a little patience, he’ll join you very soon”.In the meantime, Darren didn’t know what to do with himself. So he found himself a seat secluded from the dancefloor. The party was filled with students from rich backgrounds as
CHAPTER 16
Darren stood still, unfazed by the young men rounding him with menace look in their eyes. “This is going to be entertaining,” Clara said as she grabbed a glass of wine and took a seat, legs crossed as if ready to watch a show. “Don’t go easy on him, boys. If possible make sure you break every bone in his body,” Adrian encouraged. The female guests were cheering their boyfriends. “Go on Dickson, throw a punch first. You know you need that $2000 to get me a new wig”.“That pauper is in so much trouble. Look how muscular my Edwin is. He is going to get roughed up really bad”“…”The guys exchanged an understanding gaze then charged and closed in on their prey all at once, from front, back, left and right.Thud! The sound of punches filled the air. In an instant the guys were sent flying backwards and crashing to the floor in a second. The only sound that followed were groans and subtle moans. Amidst it, stood Darren almost in the same position he was, but this time his hands were c

“Agreed?”Darren took a while before affirming with a small nod.Since no one in the room liked Darren, they all smiled excitingly. They already know how this was going to end —the poorest guy on campus waging against the richest guy.It was surely going to end in Darren’s humiliation, and they seemed to like it when he’s humiliated. A smug curled on Adrian’s lips as the picture of having Darren roll in the mud flashed his mind.He had thought Darren would be wise enough not to accept his terms but he didn’t even try to bargain. “I know you are just putting on an act just to look tough. Deep down you’re scared. Well, I am ready to forget the bet if you would do this instead…”Adrian grabbed a bottle of champagne, opened it and emptied the content on the floor. “If you lick the champagne from the floor then I’ll forget the bet and save you the public humiliation,” he said raising an eyebrow, a mischievous chuckle playing on his lips.“Wait, isn’t that the Gout de Diamants? That champ

Outside the gate, Darren removed his phone and dialed a number. It barely rang for a few seconds before a soft voice responded.“Jeremiah, where have you been? The servants told me you left without any security, are you okay?” Helena asked with a hint of concern. The name Jeremiah still sounded strange every time he heard it. “Yeah am fine,” he assured her. “There is something I would like to ask you,” he went straight to the point. “The owner of ABC groups recognized me immediately he saw my name on the card. I mean, there are plenty of people named Hilton in the city, yet he seemed to know me instantly. Why is that?”“The owner of ABC? You mean Alexander Williams, right?” the woman asked. “He recognized you because he is a close ally to the Hilton family. A long time ago, when the Hilton conglomerate was on the verge of bankruptcy, Alexander supported the conglomerate through those dark days and helped the company get back to its feet. But…” Helena paused, reluctant to continue.

Alexander nodded and stormed inside. It wasn’t long before people were seen leaving the event center in great number. Those that tried to resist were dragged out by security. When the last set of people were coming out, there was a confrontation between an upset female who insisted on going back inside and the security men. “I am sorry ma’am but our orders are to evacuate the entire premises. Only one person is allowed inside” The security men tried to explain. But Clara would not back down. “Get your hands off me! Our party is not over yet. Do you have any idea about who we are?”“You will be in a lot of trouble once my dad gets here. You fools don’t know who you’re messing with,” Adrian said as he placed his phone against his ear.But before he made the call, Alexander approached the scene. “Have you gotten everyone out?” Once Adrian saw him, he let out a relief. “Thank goodness you are here, Mr. Alexander. Your foolish men tried to harass us. Didn’t you tell them my dad rented t

Mr. Blake became infuriated. He gnashed his teeth and growled. “We already spoke on the phone a few minutes ago—you promised to prepare a hall for me. What changed?”The manager gulped nervously, but his composure didn’t change. “Yes, you are right. I agreed to make a reservation for you but that was before an order came from above. My hands are tied — if I let you in I’ll get into a lot of trouble. I wouldn’t risk offending someone of high status”Adrian’s father anger flared more, “What do you mean someone of high status? What am I then, a commoner?” He frowned and added, “I am ready to pay you double what you normally charge”.Hughes forced an apologetic smile. “Thanks but no. Go find some other venue”. With that, the manager withdrew back in and shut the gate right in their faces.Mr. Blake couldn’t believe his eyes. He was used to being received in places like a king. Being treated like an unwanted guest was anew to him. For the first time in his life, he felt insulted.“Who is
