CHAPTER 21
The next morning, sunlight cut through the expensive curtains and struck Darren’s face. He blinked awake and checked the wall clock—half past eight. He’d overslept. His king-sized bed was too damn comfortable.Usually, he woke up as early as 6:00 a.m. and rushed out to make deliveries in the cold morning air so he could earn some cash before his lectures, which started at 8:00 a.m.But things were different now. He was no longer that poor delivery guy anymore. And today was weekend, he didn’t have lectures. But he’d already made plans for his day. He got up and entered the bathroom to freshen up. After having a nice shower and cleaning up, he was dressing up when he heard a light knock on the door. “Good morning, young master. Your grandfather requests your presence in the living room,” a female servant said reverently. “Tell him, I’m coming”.After he’d finished putting on his clothes, he went downstairs to meet his grandfather.Derek sat regally on the sofa, his legs stretched ou
CHAPTER 22
Darren’s eyes widened in shock. “How could someone be so evil,” he muttered. The world is filled with cruel and wicked people, but people like Big Ben were devils among demons.“What he is doing is illegal. Why didn’t you report him to the police?” “The police?” Sister Agnes scoffed. “I have been to almost all the police stations in this city. Even the officers are terrified of him. I tried hiring a lawyer, but the moment he learned the case was against Big Ben, he backed out. All of them did. One was honest enough to tell me to do whatever Big Ben demanded and evacuate the orphanage —he said it was pointless trying to fight him in court, that every judge will rule in his favor regardless”.Big Ben was one of the most feared figures in the city. Though the public knew him as the CEO and owner of the liquor company, Ben high limited. The truth is, his company was not the actual source of his wealth— it was just a cover up.He was a drug baron and the leader of a notorious cartel. Beh
CHAPTER 23
She looked around nervously, as though expecting danger to appear at any moment. Her grip on Darren’s hand tightened, then she added in a low tone. “Quickly, go before Big Ben gets here. If you hurry, you can escape before it is too late”.Darren regarded the agitated nun with cool indifference, then let his eyes drift toward the room where they orphans were. After a moment, he met her gaze again. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said, his voice steady with unwavering resolve.Sister Agnes became more tensed. “Why are you so stubborn? Can’t you understand that you’re playing with your life? Do you have to be reckless to prove a point? Big Ben will not pity you…”This time Darren wasn’t even listening to her anymore. His mind was made up. Sister Agnes paced back and forth restless, her face was contorted with fear. Not too long after, her nightmare came to pass. Several vehicles burst through the gate and sped in with reckless force.A Cadillac Escalade SUV led the charge, followed close
CHAPTER 24
As soon as he finished making the call, one of the thugs with an unpleasant look, walked over and delivered a tight slap across his face. “How dare you act mighty and high? Who can a delivery boy like you call? Do you think you can fool us with that fake call?” He fumed. Big Ben’s patience ran thin. A deep frown appeared on his face.Gesturing at his men, he snapped his fingers and commanded. “Tie him up and drop in front of the excavator.” He glanced at his wrist and added, “Once the twenty minutes are over, drive the vehicle over him,” his voice was ice.Instantly, the men seized Darren and did as they were instructed. The excavator idled nearby, its engine growling like a caged lion. Like all excavators, the steel tracks were designated for one purpose —to grind anything beneath them into pieces. As fragile as humans are, Darren would be turned into unrecognizable scraps should it step on him. The thought of the aftermath made the nun’s heart skip. She quickly dropped to her kne
CHAPTER 25
After a few minutes Big Ben’s face had become bruised and swollen. Blood dripping from the corner of lips— it was a terrible sight to behold. But Jeff didn’t stop. Unable to watch anymore, Sister Agnes begged Darren to intervene and stop Jeff. When Jeff had stopped, Big Ben collapsed to the ground and pleaded. “Please young master, forgive me, I shouldn’t have been so ignorant. I am such a fool”. He gestured at his men and frowned. “What are you fools doing standing? Get down on your knees and apologize to the young master”.Over forty people were now on their knees kowtowing before Darren and crying out simultaneously. “Please forgive us young master”.It’s funny how Big Ben and his thugs who were acting like they owned the world few minutes ago were now kissing the ground begging for their lives. Darren hesitated for a few seconds. After a while, he finally said to the terrified men, “I’ll only pardon you if you meet some conditions.” “Just mention it and consider it done,” Big
CHAPTER 26
Seeking the slightest opportunity to brag, Adrian said smugly. “Speaking of clothes, I took Clara to shopping yesterday. I bought clothes for her worth $25 thousand, and for myself $30 thousand”. “Wow, Adrian,” someone cooed. “That is ten times more than I spend on my wardrobe for an entire year”.Adrian chuckled elegantly. “That’s nothing. Sometimes I even spend more…” He was still bragging when Professor Lincoln arrived and their little gathering was dismissed. Darren sighed exhaustively, before heading in too. Professor Lincoln immediately began his lecture. He taught communication skills and was known for his archaic teaching style, which often involved sending students out into the field. When the lecture was coming to an end, he announced. “Before I leave today, I am going to leave you with a little project. Just like we did last year, you are going to group yourselves into three groups”. “Each group will interview as many public figures as possible and have them sign in the
CHAPTER 27
“What’s going on here?” Her voice shrilled through the classroom, causing clenched fists to uncurl. The students try to hurry back to their seats and pretend like nothing was going on, but it was already too late for that. Ms. Tiffany had seen too much to ascertain what was happening.Immediately, she walked over and pointed out Darren and Adrian. “Why are the two of you fighting?” She inquired with a stern expression. By this time, the bleeding from Adrian’s nostrils had flowed down to his chest staining his shirt with blood patches. Before the two of them answered, Clara rose from her seat and said boldly. “Ms. Tiffany, they weren’t fighting. It was Darren that attacked Adrian —Adrian was only trying defend himself. But look, he still injured him badly”.Darren frowned. He wouldn’t have expected less from Clara. “That’s not true. I was the —” “Shut up, will you?” The woman snapped, cutting him mid-sentence.Then without paying him anymore attention, she sent for a nurse in the u
CHAPTER 28
“A suspension?” Darren’s heart tightened in his chest. The words hit him like whips to the back. He had always being of good behavior and never for once thought he will get a suspension. “Please sir, reconsider your decision. You didn’t even hear my own side of the story —I didn’t start the fight. Adrian started it, if anyone is to be suspended it should be him,” Darren implored. But the VC remained unmoved, “Are you the one to tell me how to run the school? I have made my decision and that’s final,” he said and looked away. Deep down, the VC knew both students had engaged in a fair fight and if someone was to be suspended, it was both of them. But he chose to please Adrian and remain on Mr. Blake’s good side. There was a triumphant scoff on Adrian’s face. “Adrian, child, are you okay? Please go to the clinic if you’re still feeling any pains. You’re free to take the rest of the day off —I’ll instruct the lecturers not to penalize you even if you miss class today” the VC said app
CHAPTER 29
Darren was stunned by her sudden outrage. From what he could tell, he hadn’t done anything wrong to be sent out. All he did was ask to see Mr. Scofield.Or was this not Mr. Scofield’s company? He took a moment to look around thinking he might’ve mistakenly entered the wrong building. But this was Scofield groups, the banners hanging on the wall confirmed it.“What are you still doing standing there? Do you want me to call the security to throw you out?” the receptionist voice rang out again. This time he could sense the disdain behind it. “What! Why?” Darren furrowed his brows defiantly. “What have I done?”There was an unpleasant look on the woman’s face. “A stubborn one, huh? I’ve dealt with countless people like you. The sooner you get out of here, the best it will be for you!” she warned.“No, I came to see Mr. Scofield and I’m not leaving until I’ve seen him,” he retorted. The woman’s frown deepened. “I have been working in this front desk for over ten years. People who usually c
CHAPTER 30
The fierce woman’s face was twisted with fear, her usual icy confidence nowhere to be found. Despite the well-ventilated office, sweat clung to her forehead and soaked through the fabric of her blouse. It was clear she had sprinted all the way up.For a minute, Darren almost denied she was not the same vile, wicked woman in the lobby. If not for the ID tag still hanging around her neck and her unmistakable commanding presence, he might have doubted she was the same Ms. Winifred.Mr. Scofield, rose from his seat in agitation. “What’s it Winifred, what’s the problem?”She opened her mouth, but no words came out. Her breath hitched, her chest rising and falling as she struggled to gather herself. It took her a few long moments—shaky ones—before she finally steadied enough to speak. “Mr. Scofield… Sir— there’s a problem. A big… a huge problem”. The man’s brow knitted. Her panic was killing him. “Speak will you!” She gulped. “Sir, the structural team just called. They found a fault in t
