CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
The lights flickered once, then went out completely.Adrian killed the engine and stepped out first, scanning the shadows. “We’re clear,” he said. “For now.”Leonard helped Elena out. Her hand trembled slightly, but her chin was high. “Where are we?” she asked, looking around at the vast, empty space filled with the smell of oil and damp steel.“Safe house,” Adrian replied. “One of ours. Off-grid.”Leonard closed the van door and turned to Adrian. “You said Marina’s data trail led to the east docks?”Adrian nodded, opening his tablet. “Yeah. An unregistered data server hidden under one of Stonecliff’s old storage yards. It’s encrypted, but the access key matches Marina’s personal code.”Elena frowned. “So… Marina wasn’t just some Stonecliff executive?”Leonard’s jaw tightened. “No. She was higher than that. She was part of the inner circle the same people who signed off on my family’s extermination.”Elena’s face paled. “Then why help you now?”“That’s what I intend to find out.”Ad
CHAPTER THIRTY TWO
“Down!” Leonard shouted. He grabbed Elena and pulled her behind a server rack as bullets shredded the air above them. Sparks flew from the machines.Adrian ducked beside them, firing back. “Two on the right moving in!”Leonard leaned out just long enough to take a shot one of Quinn’s men dropped instantly. Another screamed, clutching his leg.“Leonard!” Elena hissed. “You’ll get yourself killed!”He didn’t look at her. “Stay low.”She pressed her back against the cold steel, heart hammering. The smell of gunpowder and burning wires filled the room.Adrian reloaded. “They’re trying to flank us!”Leonard’s tone was calm, clipped. “Then we move first.”He pointed toward the maintenance door at the far end. “We push left. Adrian cover fire. Elena stay right behind me.”Adrian nodded once. “On your mark.”Leonard took a breath. “Now!”They broke from cover. Adrian fired in rapid bursts, suppressing Quinn’s guards as Leonard and Elena sprinted across the aisle. Bullets sparked around them.
CHAPTER THIRTY THREE
The safehouse was silent except for the low noise of the generator.Leonard stood by the window, watching dawn stretch pale across the city skyline. He hadn’t slept. Adrian was slumped over the table beside his laptop, fingers still on the keyboard, half-asleep. Elena sat across from him, clutching a mug of untouched coffee. She’d been staring at Leonard for almost an hour. Finally, she spoke. “You’re avoiding me.”Leonard didn’t turn. “I’m thinking.”“About what? How to tell me my father’s a criminal?”He exhaled, jaw tight. “Don’t start.”Elena rose, setting the mug down with a thud. “Don’t start? Leonard, we nearly got killed last night, and now you’re just standing there like it’s another day at the office!”Adrian stirred, blinking awake. “Okay… maybe we could yell after breakfast?”Neither of them looked at him.Elena’s voice cracked. “I saw his name. ‘Harrison Carter.’ You can’t pretend I didn’t.”Leonard finally turned to face her. His expression was calm, but his eyes were da
CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR
Bullets tore through the walls, splinters flying. Adrian dove behind the table, dragging the laptop with him. Elena hit the ground, hands over her head.Leonard was already moving. He flipped the couch on its side for cover, firing two clean shots toward the doorway. One of the intruders dropped instantly. The other ducked behind the kitchen counter.“Three more outside!” Adrian shouted, eyes on the surveillance feed. “Front and back!”Leonard reloaded fast. “Window take the window!”Elena crawled toward the back room, but stopped as another gunman appeared at the hall entrance. Leonard grabbed a vase from the floor and hurled it, the distraction giving him a second to shoot. The man fell.“Adrian, move!”“I’m trying not to die here!”The room shook as one of the grenades went off outside. Smoke flooded the windows.Leonard yanked Elena up by the arm. “We can’t stay!”She nodded, coughing. “There’s a basement door behind the pantry!”They ran. Adrian followed, grabbing his bag. The mo
CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE
The safe house was silent, except for the low hum of the generator.Adrian locked the steel door and set down his gun. “They’re off our trail. For now.”Leonard stood by the window, watching the flickering streetlight outside. His shirt was torn, streaked with dust and blood. He didn’t move.Elena sat on the couch, hands trembling slightly. “You’re not going to say anything?”Leonard’s jaw tightened. “About what?”She looked up at him, eyes burning. “You know what. Quinn said you were there the night my father died.”Adrian glanced between them, uneasy. “Maybe now’s not ”“Stay out of this,” Elena snapped, her voice breaking.Leonard finally turned, his face unreadable. “Yes. I was there.”The words dropped like stones.Elena rose slowly. “You… were there?”Leonard nodded. “Robert called me that night. He said he’d discovered something Stonecliff’s connection to the offshore accounts, and someone inside his company feeding them information.”Her voice wavered. “And you didn’t tell me?
CHAPTER THIRTY SIX
Rain hammered down in cold sheets, masking the sound of footsteps as Leonard, Elena, and Adrian moved through the forest toward the abandoned airfield. The coordinates led them here three hours north of the city, in the middle of nowhere.Adrian checked the scanner in his hand. “No signals. The place looks dead.”Leonard’s tone was steady. “It’s not dead. It’s sleeping.”Elena shivered, pulling her jacket tighter. “You mean someone’s in there?”Leonard’s gaze swept the perimeter. “If The Circle is still operating, this is one of their hubs. Underground facility, no network access, off-grid. That’s why we couldn’t trace them before.”Adrian crouched behind a fence, scanning with a small drone. “There east side. Two guards, infrared sensors, auto turrets.”Leonard nodded. “Standard setup. We’ll take the drainage tunnel.”Elena frowned. “You sound like you’ve been here before.”Leonard’s voice was quiet. “I trained here once.”Adrian froze. “Wait you mean this was one of their bases?”Le
CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN
The next morning, the city buzzed with rumors. Every major news outlet had one name on their front page Leonard Kane.“Breaking: Westwood heir under investigation for corporate espionage.”“Anonymous source leaks Kane Consortium documents.”“Rumors of betrayal shake the Westwood empire.”Elena stared at the TV in disbelief. “They turned everything on you.”Leonard stood by the window of his penthouse office, calm but unreadable. “Victor moves fast. I expected that.”Adrian tossed a newspaper onto the desk. “This isn’t just fast it’s surgical. He leaked fake ledgers with your name tied to Stonecliff’s accounts.”Leonard’s lips curved slightly. “Quinn’s handiwork.”Elena frowned. “You sound almost… calm.”Leonard turned toward her. “Because this is exactly what I wanted.”Adrian blinked. “You wanted to get framed?”Leonard’s voice was steady. “They think they’re cornering me. But to expose their network, I needed them to make the first move.”Elena crossed her arms. “You’re playing with
CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
Adrian slammed the door behind them. “You realize that was insane, right? We barely made it out alive!”Leonard pulled off his jacket, his movements controlled. “If Quinn wanted me dead, she wouldn’t have missed.”Elena’s voice trembled. “Victor could die, Leonard. The media saw everything there’s chaos out there.”Leonard turned to her. “Good. Chaos exposes cracks. It makes people desperate, careless.”Adrian threw up his hands. “You sound like you planned this.”“I did,” Leonard said flatly. “But I didn’t plan for her to pull the trigger there.”Elena stepped closer. “Then stop pretending you can control this. She’s not just dangerous she’s unpredictable.”Leonard’s eyes darkened. “No. She’s predictable when she’s cornered. She’ll run to her handler.”Adrian frowned. “Handler?”Leonard picked up his phone and played a voice message distorted audio, Quinn’s voice barely audible.“The Circle won’t wait forever. Clean it up, or they’ll clean you up.”Elena’s face paled. “She’s afraid.”
CHAPTER THIRTY NINE
The private jet touched down in Geneva at dawn.Leonard didn’t sleep the entire flight.Neither did Elena.Adrian was the first to break the silence.“So… we’re just walking into another country on a rumor?”Leonard’s voice was low. “Not a rumor. A lead.”Elena stared at him. “Leonard, she died in your arms. You think she lied with her last breath?”“I think everyone lies when they’re scared,” he said. “Even the dying.”Adrian exhaled. “You know what I hate most about following you? The fact that you might actually be right.”They left the airport quietly, blending into the early crowd.Leonard’s contact an old Interpol fixer was waiting by a gray sedan.“Mr. Kane,” the man greeted. “I was told you’re looking for a ghost.”Leonard’s eyes narrowed. “He has a name.”The fixer nodded. “Everything leaves a trail. Even the dead. But you won’t like what I found.”Elena frowned. “Where is he?”The man handed Leonard a folder. “Hotel Du Lys. Suite 801. Under the name Dr. Everett Hale. Arrived
CHAPTER FORTY
The safehouse was silent except for the hum of the security monitors.Adrian was pacing. Elena sat on the couch, arms crossed tightly.Leonard stood by the window, watching the rain.Adrian broke first.“So what now? Your dad’s alive, running a global syndicate, and apparently wants you to inherit it. I’d say that counts as a bad week.”Leonard didn’t respond.Elena’s voice was quiet. “He looked… proud of you.”Leonard turned. “He’s proud of what he made me. Not who I am.”Adrian frowned. “What if he’s right? The Circle won’t stop. They’ve already taken Stonecliff, Westwood’s on the edge, and half your assets are frozen.”Leonard’s tone was sharp. “We adapt.”Adrian sighed. “Adapt, sure. But we’re outnumbered. He has armies, governments, and enough leverage to bury us in lawsuits or bullets.”Leonard looked straight at him. “Then we make him bleed from the inside.”Elena stood. “Leonard, listen to yourself. This is your father.”He met her gaze. “He stopped being that a long time ago.
