CHAPTER ONE

“Leonard, what are you doing just standing there? Move!”

The voice cut through the noise like a whip. Leonard turned slowly, his expression calm but unreadable. His mother-in-law, Miranda Westwood, stood at the end of the grand dining room table, pearls glinting against her stiff collar. Everyone else was seated; her husband, Robert, sipping wine with quiet judgment; her son, Victor, smirking; and Elena, Leonard’s wife, sitting stiffly with her gaze fixed on the empty plate before her.

It was Miranda’s birthday dinner. And Leonard had been summoned like a servant.

He crossed the marble floor, placing the velvet box on the table.

“That’s your gift?” Victor chuckled, leaning back. “What is it? A discount trinket from the street market?”

Leonard said nothing. He simply opened the box. Inside was a delicate gold pendant, modest but elegant.

Miranda’s lips curled. “You’ve been in this family for three years, Leonard, and this is all you can give me? A piece of costume jewelry? My maid wears better.”

Victor’s laughter echoed. Even Robert allowed a slight smirk. Elena shifted uncomfortably, but she didn’t speak.

Leonard closed the box without comment.

“Do you even have a job?” Victor pressed. “Or are you just living off my sister's money like some stray? I heard you tried to start a business once. What happened? Oh, that’s right it failed.”

“Victor,” Elena said quietly, but her voice lacked conviction.

“No, let him finish,” Miranda said, enjoying the spectacle. “Leonard, do you have anything to say for yourself? Or are you going to stand there mute as always?”

Leonard’s gaze lifted, meeting hers. His voice was calm, almost bored.

“I gave you what I could,” he said. “And believe me, this gift will outlast any of Victor’s toys.”

Victor slammed his hand on the table. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means,” Leonard said, sliding the box back toward her, “I don’t measure value by price tags.”

The room fell silent for a beat before Victor burst out laughing. “Price tags? Leonard, you wouldn’t know value if it slapped you. The Westwoods deal in millions every day. You can’t even buy yourself a decent suit.”

Leonard didn’t respond. He didn’t need to. His phone vibrated in his pocket.

He glanced at it. A message: “Move now?”

He typed back one word: “Wait.”

Across the table, Miranda was still lecturing. “I told Elena from the beginning this marriage would drag her down. Look at her now sitting here, embarrassed because her husband can’t even provide. She could have married into the Grant family, but instead ”

The dining room doors burst open. A man in a tailored suit strode in, carrying a briefcase and wearing an expression of urgency.

“Madam Westwood, forgive the intrusion,” he said, bowing slightly. “I’m here on behalf of Harlow & Cross.”

Robert frowned. “This is a private dinner.”

The man ignored him. He turned to Miranda. “Your company, Westwood Enterprises, is under immediate threat of a hostile acquisition. The rival group, Stonecliff, filed an emergency takeover motion this afternoon. By morning, your shares could be frozen.”

The table erupted in noise.

“What?” Victor shot to his feet. “That’s impossible. We own fifty-one percent!”

“Not anymore,” the man said grimly. “Your cousin sold part of his stake. Stonecliff has leverage now.”

Miranda’s face went pale. She turned to her husband. “Robert, do something! Call the board!”

Robert was already on his phone, barking orders. Elena’s eyes darted to Leonard, who remained seated, utterly calm.

“Who are you?” Victor demanded of the messenger.

“Just a courier,” the man said. “But there’s more. Stonecliff filed a freeze order on all Westwood assets. It’s only a matter of hours before you lose operational control.”

Miranda clutched her pearls. “No… this can’t be happening.”

Leonard finally spoke, his voice quiet but carrying. “It’s happening.”

Every head turned toward him.

Victor narrowed his eyes. “What do you know about this?”

Leonard leaned back in his chair. “Enough to tell you that screaming won’t help.”

Victor bristled. “Don’t act like you know anything. You’re a nobody. Stay out of this.”

“Is that what you think?” Leonard’s tone was mild, almost amused.

Victor stepped closer. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Leonard rose, his movements unhurried. “It means you’ve spent your life underestimating people. Especially me. Tonight, that ends.”

Miranda slammed her hand on the table. “Leonard, stop speaking in riddles. If you know something, say it. Or leave.”

Leonard’s phone buzzed again. This time, he answered the speaker.

“Sir,” a voice said respectfully, “Stonecliff has just withdrawn their takeover bid. They’ve sent an apology letter to the Westwood board and agreed to cease all actions. Your instructions were carried out.”

The room went silent.

Victor blinked. “What did you just say?”

Miranda stared at Leonard, speechless.

Leonard ended the call and slipped the phone back into his pocket. He didn’t explain. He didn’t need to.

“Enjoy your dinner,” he said calmly, and walked out.
