Chapter 131
"Do you have any idea how valuable the information you've just given me is?" The silence that had engulfed the table for the past ten minutes was broken as the healer finally found her voice once more.A warm smile crossed Greg's lips. "Valuable enough that I had to share it with you," he replied. The smile straightened a bit as Greg remembered something else. "It's also very dangerous," he warned, unable to help the weight in his tone of voice. "According to Morpheus, the vast majority of beings, human or otherwise, live and die in the life order tier they were born in. Rising to the demi tier the correct way is infinitely harder than doing it the way all other mages have been doing it. It might even be arrogant of either one of us to believe ourselves capable of it," he voiced the warning Morpheus had given him about how hard the path ahead would be.An amused smile crossed his teacher's face as she replied. "If humility were the price for power, then no mage would ever be able to a
Chapter 132
The air at the table they were at immediately turned frigid. Just a second ago, everything had been calm, even cordial, and now, Greg found himself tensing up, ready for a fight. From the corner of his eyes, he could see the two curved blades that had appeared in Olivia's hands. He didn't have to turn to his familiar to feel the cold killing intent coming off her in waves. Morpheus, who had thus far been completely uninterested in their reunion also seemed to be jolted by the comment as Greg could now feel the deity's attention turn to the healer across from him. The table transformed into a room full of propane, even a single spark would be enough to set the situation off.In the end, Greg let out a sigh as he let the tension drain out of him and he leaned back on his chair in a relaxed manner. A brow arched on the healer's face as she noted the change in his demeanor. "What? You think me incapable of harming you?" She asked, keeping her voice level even though Olivia seemed ready to
Chapter 133
The Arcana Institute is perfect for you, a beginner on the road of magic. But for me, it's an excuse. There is no reason for me to be at the institute other than as a way of staying close to you. And that... that scares me Roka. I feel like I am betraying myself! That by not pursuing vengeance with everything I have, I'm quietly accepting what happened to me. That just like my friends turned their backs on me, I am turning my back on myself," she gave voice to her fears and doubts. "And that fear is what the aura from the law of desire latched on to. It made you want to be rid of the source of the uncertainty," Greg said, connecting the dots as to where the desire to kill him stemmed from. The healer quietly nodded clear shame in her gaze at the confession. "You're not wrong," Greg said much to his teacher's surprise. "I've always known that we would eventually have to part ways. I am walking this path for the first time whereas you are retracing your steps back to where you were. Ev
Chapter 134
Not surprisingly, his question was met with silence. Despite her displeasure, even Olivia seemed to recognize the fact that the healer was the most powerful member of their group. Short of bringing Morpheus or her true self into the fight, they would be signing up for a beating if not worse if they decided to take on the healer. "You could refuse to help push her mana to the third tier," Olivia finally found her voice after a pause. "And she could refuse to guide me through the use of the Maelstrom ascension manual," Greg countered. "Then you could refuse to give her the layers of the Maelstrom ascension manual that follow the first," Olivia immediately shot back, her tone unyielding. "And I will have lost a close friend," Greg answered calmly without missing a beat. Olivia had opened her mouth to raise some counterpoint. She, however, came up short, not having expected Greg to turn the discussion away from bargaining chips to a more sentimental direction. "If I manage to climb
Chapter 135
The clone began another sweep of the formation as her true self considered all the options before her. She was halfway through another sweep when she froze, feeling the power and much more powerful mind of her true self descend. Usually, her aura would fill up any room she descended into. This time, however, she was doing all she could to restrain it. She didn't want to taint any of the insights she could glean from the aura of the law of desire. It was a gamble, but eons of life had made one thing clear to her, power was not gained in safety. If you wish to be safe, then give up any ambitions of power. That option wasn't open for her. She hadn't risen to the heights that she had by playing it safe and she wasn't about to start now. Given her past experiences, there was an almost ninety percent chance that one of them would betray the other and they'd end up as mortal enemies. She was already preparing herself for that day. But until it came, she planned to make full use of this oppo
Chapter 136
The veiled woman's head had barely made it past the flaps of the tent before Greg's gladius was pressed firmly against her throat. "Make any sudden moves and you're dead!" He growled in a glacial tone of voice. The woman who'd been about to sneak into his tent went still as a statue. Even through the veil that covered her face, Greg could see the way her eyes had gone wide with fear at the unexpected turn of events "Come in, slowly!" He instructed, not the least bit moved by her look of distress. With the fear that had seized her, Greg had to command her again, this time with a little more bite in his tone before the woman stiffly walked into the tent.Like the first dungeon, Greg was having a hard time with this second one. For the longest time, the ambush in the desert had been a hurdle he couldn't get past. Now, however, it was a breeze. If anything it became cathartic for him as it allowed him to let out the silent frustration he felt with the fact that his teacher would be leavin
Chapter 137
It took a lot of mental energy to maintain that limbo right up until the very last moment, but it was the only way that he'd found that worked. Otherwise, any time he made a move without truly meaning to, his body would unconsciously hold back and not fully commit to it. This made it almost impossible for him to feint effectively, especially with someone as keen as Olivia. But when even he didn't know whether the attack would be real or not, he became impossible to read, just like he was in the moment. Greg could have tried to press the woman using words, but he didn't really have any leads or angles that he could make use of to corner or compel an answer out of her, so he'd chosen the direct approach instead. Everything about him, from his cold eyes, the resolute way his jaw was clenched, to the complete lack of hesitation in his movements made it clear that he intended to kill. Despite the violence with which he moved, the woman was never in any danger as Greg hadn't breached the
Chapter 138
Olivia had once warned him that the dungeon learned and adapted to him just as much as he did the dungeon. Greg hadn't had reason to think about that warning for a long while now. However, he was now coming up against the consequences of not doing so. Unable to field bandits powerful enough to kill him, it had instead turned his allies against him by making his strength appear suspect in their eyes. The annoying part was that it made sense. With this kind of strength, he wouldn't just be a nobody who chose to be a guard. Even he would be suspicious if somebody really strong tried to make himself part of his crew for no apparent reason. His familiar had warned him to take these dungeon runs seriously as they were meant to train him in all manner of skills, infiltration being one of them. Unfortunately, as someone from Earth who had played several video games, Greg had unconsciously fallen back into thinking that this was just another game with unthinking NPCs that would swallow any sto
Chapter 139
Greg could almost see in his eyes the calculations the man was making. Greg was strong, despite his hatred, even the Krethna recognized this fact. This was, after all, the reason he'd even come to the man's attention in the first place. Starting a fight with him ran the risk of the man losing more fighters than was optimal if he wished to stand among the other caravan heads, without inviting attack. "Make the smart choice here," Greg latched on to the moment of hesitation from the man. "You can leave me behind. I offered my services and you don't want them. That's okay. Leave me behind and you don't have to lose men pointlessly!" He presented the man with another alternative. Greg knew that he'd be failing the main objective of the dungeon run by doing this, but he'd already written off this run. The new goal that he'd set for himself was to see if he could extricate himself from a situation where he was in a hostile camp. Whether that happened by words or by combat, he didn't care.
Chapter 140
Greg's eyes opened as he found himself back on his bed in the airship. A sigh left him. "What a shit show!" He muttered as he went over the dungeon he'd just emerged from. The first thing that Greg did after it became clear that the system didn't consider the dungeon failed, was to put the elites out of their misery. Had he been in the real world, Greg would have bought healing potions from the system to give to them. He might not be able to erase the mental scar he'd probably left on their psyche, but at least he could rectify the physical harm done. But Greg didn't have access to the system when inside the dungeon. The only items he could bring inside the dungeon were those things that he'd bought from the dungeon shop. A pack of healing potions, however, wasn't among the things he'd prepared for this delve. Rather than watch them suffer and die a slow miserable death, Greg turned into a blur and decapitated them one after the other. That, however, was just the start. While the larg
