Chapter 141
Greg still couldn't help but shudder when he remembered what his spell had done to the caravan's elite guards. Gruesome as the memory was, however, it was a viable path to power that Greg couldn't ignore. Not sharpening his blade wouldn't relieve Greg of the need to fight, it just meant that he'd be forced to fight with a blunt blade. There was still another year or more to this journey, but that didn't bother Greg. He'd spend it trying to sharpen his senses for the underlying truth associated with both earth and life. There was no need to focus on any particular truth as Greg was certain they would change from place to place and also depending on whether he was touching stone or soil. Hell, the truth for a stone that made up a city wall might be different than for one meant to build a house even if it's the same kind of stone. Just growing more sensitive to them would be good enough. Nevertheless, easy as the goal sounded, Greg was keenly aware of just how much of an uphill climb it
Chapter 142
With how tempered his soul was, Greg no longer suffered a backlash from back-to-back dungeon delves. With his yearlong meditation done with, Greg didn't wish to launch into any more serious training regimes for the time being, so the dungeon had been his short-term alternative. "We are all on the same team now. Your well-being matters to me Calyn, it wouldn't have been a bother for you to let me know that you are okay," he informed her, his tone serious. "Also, allow me to apologize for what happened to you. I was so lost in the joy of reunion that I didn't pause to consider how the remnant aura of what I'd been doing would affect you guys. I should have been more careful," he offered. The apology wasn't Greg undoing his teacher's work with the mind-fogging potion. He had talked with both his teacher and familiar about this and had come to the decision that he wouldn't try to hide what had happened. The memory fogging potion was meant to rid them of the traumatic memories, or embarras
Chapter 143
Stop!" Reina had pulled the door to his office open and already had one foot outside the door when her uncle called out to her. "What you are asking for here is no small thing, I just want to hear from you that this is what you really want," the man said, a false note of concern in his voice. Reina didn't believe even for a second that the man cared about her, despite their blood relationship. Still, because this was something she wanted, she didn't immediately leave like she usually did in other negotiations where threats were thrown her way. Pulling the door closed so no third parties could hear, she laid out her offer. "You are a smart man uncle. Smarter than most see or know. Unfortunately, father has always been smarter, which is why despite your best efforts, he has remained head of the family business and not you," the words were delivered dispassionately, as if she was reporting on the progress of a snail sliding across a wall. Reina suspected that this was why, despite his j
Chapter 144
Before he could say anything, however, Reina continued. "Terin hates alchemy. He'd much rather practice the sword. The only time I've seen him smile is during his morning exercise routine when he practices with it. And yet, to chase the love of his father who sees him as nothing more than the vessel of his ambitions and unfulfilled dreams, he has almost fully committed himself to the study of alchemy. Enough so that even someone naturally gifted like me has come to respect his prowess in the field. He is breaking himself in half trying to compete with me, all so he can finally be worthy of his father's love. What's worse is that you already know all this," she said her gaze meeting that of her uncle which had gone cold. "You know that your son is withering on the inside trying to please you and yet it doesn't bother you in the least. So long as you get what you want, what do you care about him, right? You'll have to forgive me if the word family means very little coming from you, uncl
Chapter 145
Outwardly, Reina looked calm, perhaps even disinterested in the current discussion. She had received years of training in negotiations as the daughter of the head of an intercontinental alchemy guild and its prospective heir. This was the only reason she didn't freeze up in the face of the trio before her. That said, while she appeared calm on the outside, a storm of emotions was raging within her as she wondered just what kind of vessel she'd walked onto. The young man was smiling and explaining how she could be accommodated in whichever floor she wished and so on... Reina, however, could barely hear a thing he was saying. The alchemy guild her father ran operated all over the continent and beyond, so of course they had deep connections with the airship industry. Well-known as the daughter to the head of such a guild, Reina didn't have to put in a lot of effort to get information from those who worked at the airship dock. A simple request from her would have been enough to get it, e
Chapter 146
Coincidence or not, this airship was exactly what she needed to make good on her plan. She hadn't been lying when she told her uncle that while she didn't love the business side of the guild, she was completely into alchemy. With the Arcana Institute being among the premiere institutions when it came to all things magic, Reina couldn't help her excitement as she wondered what she'd learn when she got there. That said, her first order of business was to erase her trail behind herself as she left. It wouldn't do to join the institute only for her family to come for her soon thereafter, or worse yet, that snake that she called uncle. If she destroyed the records of this one airship, then she might as well stand on the rooftops and announce to everyone which particular ship she wished to board. So, instead, she found a few unsavory types that would be willing to do anything for coin. The room in which the dock master kept all his records mysteriously went up in flames just an hour or so be
Chapter 147
All manner of ideas had immediately started running through her mind. The last that she'd heard of the woman, she'd died. Clearly, that wasn't the case. But what if it wasn't that she was dead but rather that she needed to be? No one rises to the heights of power that she had without making enemies. What if rather than dying, Healer Alena had suffered injuries that compromised her power? If this fact was revealed, all the enemies she'd made over the years would probably start plotting her actual death. So, she disappears and everyone claims that she died under mysterious circumstances. Reina had zero proof for any of what she was imagining, but how else could one explain that this woman was standing before her? Going on nothing more than a hunch, Reina chose to act like she hadn't at all recognized Healer Alena. So caught up in the shock of the moment was Reina that she barely heard what the two said to each other, but soon thereafter Healer Alena walked away on some other business.
Chapter 148
Reina couldn't help but notice that the young man's guard had cut into a conversation her master was having, and yet the young man seemed completely unbothered by this. From the way he was now looking curiously at her tattoo, it was clear that he hadn't attached any significance to it before his guard revealed that it meant something. "A Leonid, poison variant," she revealed. Reina couldn't help some quiet pride in the slight look of surprise that showed on Healer Alena. She was the only one of those present who seemed to recognize just how hard it was to have a leonid as a contracted beast. "Can you summon it?" Healer Alena spoke up for the first time in this meeting. Based on their contract, Raksha would have no choice but to answer whenever Reina summoned him. A beast that doesn't answer when called is of no use to a summoner. For the first time in their life-long relationship, however, Reina felt hesitation from Raksha at the prospect of being summoned. Nevertheless, the relat
Chapter 149
"How did you know?" Jerni, the Dockmaster, asked as they stood on the rooftop of one of the buildings close to his office, watching as smoke rose from the room where they stored the dock's records. A few days back, a woman in a cloak that hid her features walked into his office and dropped a bag of gold coins on his desk. From the mana coming off her, Jerni could tell that she was at the fourth tier. As someone in the second tier, the gap in their power was enough for him to accommodate her in most things should she have asked. Only she didn't, instead, she warned him that someone would try to burn their records and that he needed to make a copy of the records of every airship that was currently docked with them. Given the fact that there were about a hundred or so airships docked with them, it would be slightly inconvenient but not beyond the realm of possibility. And with the coin to compensate for the inconvenience, He was more than happy to do so. "Do not ask questions the wei
Chapter 150
A primal instinct for blood. A storm of bloodlust. That's what Greg could see in Calyn's eyes even as he leaned back to avoid the gauntleted punch from her. Fighting with Olivia usually felt like an embodied version of chess. You couldn't just let yourself go. You had to not only react to the present but plan out two or three steps into the future. Otherwise, your defeat would be set in stone without you knowing it. In a particularly annoying show of skill and foresight, Olivia could even have you reacting in ways that lead you to the defeat she'd already envisioned. In your mind, you'd think you were fighting her, but in reality, the two of you had ganged up against yourself. No, when fighting Olivia, you couldn't turn off your mind. The same, however, wasn't true of Calyn. When Calyn fought, she went into a battle trance. It wasn't that she didn't think exactly, but rather there was no distinction between her instinct and action. She didn't see you kicking and think to move out of t
