Chapter 221
It was a bit galling to Greg that he wasn't able to come up with the solution to this dungeon on his own. This feeling was only amplified ten times over when Athalia went ahead to show him that the answer to his conundrum was not only obvious, but had been staring him in the face all this time. When he first attempted this dungeon, Greg's main problem had been that he wasn't strong enough to survive the bandit attack. After dissolving on his teacher's mana pathways, however, that had ceased to be an issue. The reinforcement that his body received from fortifying itself with tier-seven mana made dealing with the bandits little more than a walk in the park. The problem went from being one of power to one of how cunning Greg could be. He needed to find a way to eliminate the bandits without arousing the suspicion of the Krethna, the caravan head. Failure to achieve this first objective, then he needed to figure out a way to take charge of the caravan without the mages leaving and everyon
Chapter 222
Greg had fallen into the trap of thinking of the dungeons like some game where he was the only player and the rest were NPCs with no value to the larger picture. The worst part was that even Athalia clearly believed that the answer given was far too simple and looked expectantly to him awaiting another challenge to this approach. Greg, however, could offer no real counter as he had never tried to make use of the guards around him. He had dived the dungeon more than a hundred times and watched them die over and over again. Yet, at no point had it occurred to him to change this section of the run. The more he thought about it, the more glaring the flaw seemed to him. Even if the Krethna didn't try to kill him afterward, what exactly had been his plan? Even in scenarios where Greg went all out, their losses to the bandits were usually horrendous, with about a third of the guards falling to them. And that was in the good outcomes, in bad ones, they were usually wiped out! The mission wa
Chapter 223
While your elite regiment of guards protects you, the rest of your caravan is protected by this sorry lot. Look at them, I'd wager that more than half have never been in a fist fight, let alone taken a man's life. A few among them are decent, but the rest probably don't even know which side of the sword to hold. Some don't even have armor in and most of those who do aren't even wearing it right. And even if one were to momentarily forget that this is supposed to be a fighting force and just consider them escorts, look at the footwear they have on! By the time midday comes along, half of them will have raw feet from sand finding its way into their shoes. Anyone who fields this force to protect your caravan is either a fool themselves, or considers you a fool," Greg laid out without holding anything back. Were his words harsh? Yes. However, he had seen this group of guards decimated by the bandits enough times that he had zero inclination to sugarcoat his words. He found himself in the

A nine-foot giant who wielded a halberd and whose name Greg already knew. "The journey before us can't be abandoned! Work with him and do your best to whip this force into shape! Prove yourself in this task, and I promise, you have a bright future by my side," the man proposed. "Give me three hours, Krethna, and they'll be ready to face anything the sands have to throw at them," Greg answered with a nod. "You have one," The man answered in the tone of one who wasn't willing to bargain. "I hear and obey," Greg replied, invoking the way Olivia would answer his requests in the presence of strangers. Again, the man seemed to be pleased at the deference shown as he nodded in acknowledgment. Turning to the giant, he spoke. "My coffers are open to you within reason. Ensure that this rabble doesn't fall apart at the first sign of trouble," he directed, before turning to walk off barely acknowledging the more formal salute the giant offered. Right up until this point, some small part of G
Chapter 225
It was almost laughable just how easy the fight against the bandits became. Greg had only implemented two changes and they were enough to shift the whole course of the battle. The rookies weren't left to fend for themselves, and a large percentage of the guards were now wearing greaves to protect their Achilles tendons from the opening move of the bandits. With the heat of the desert, metal armor was simply impractical. Still, whatever beast the hide that was used to make the greaves came from was likely one tough bastard. Of those wearing the protective piece, not a single person went down. Among the twenty or so who refused to get one, about eighteen paid for it with a slit tendon. Still, asking the veterans to share their insights on bandit attacks and how to best face off against them paid dividends as more than half had enough presence of mind not to let themselves fall fully to the ground. In other words, they went from losing almost ninety guards with the bandits' opening move
Chapter 226
The tent he walked into had a completely different atmosphere. All the elites were already gathered inside and from the serious air, Greg could tell that they weren't gathered because of him. Unlike in their previous meetings, the Krethna wasn't seated on plush cushions on the ground but was seated in a makeshift throne of sorts even as his elites sat on the thick carpet that covered the floor of the tent. Several eyes turned his way when Greg walked in after Anuk. In the eyes of some, there was mild curiosity about the young man who stepped up and became the next head of security for the caravan. In the eyes of most, however, there was clear dismissal, maybe even mild contempt. The thought that Greg was just some upstart taking advantage of the situation was clearly not just restricted to a few of the veteran guards. Perhaps the biggest difference between this run and the previous ones was the Krethna's wife. Like everyone else, she was seated on the thick carpet, but unlike the gu
Chapter 227
The caravan head had quietly tested Greg trying to see which way he would go and possibly from that, try to deduce what Greg was actually after. Rather than pick one of the anticipated paths, he'd done the equivalent of growing wings and flying up into the sky. A burst of laughter left the man, Greg's answer having surpassed all his expectations and in a way, assuaged most of the Krethna's fears as Greg didn't seem to be after anything in particular to do with the caravan. "A true warrior," The Krethna boomed with clear amusement and some approval. "I offer him a reward and rather than ask for riches, he asks for more training! Well then, Fahn, speak your mind, will you train him?" the man asked, turning to the archer. It spoke to the higher rank that the elite guards occupied that the Krethna asked for Fahn's opinion rather than just ordering him like he would with any other guard. The archer reached up and stroked his braided beard contemplatively. "To have one's enemies look up a
Chapter 228
By the smug look on his face, Greg could tell that their Krethna took it as a point of pride that they made it to the meeting point before everyone else. Someone had tried to sabotage his journey by stealing his head of security, leaving him with a band of majority novices to protect his caravan. Yet somehow, he'd beaten everyone else to the punch and would be the one waiting to receive them instead of coming in last like Greg had every time he got to this point. The meeting location was a large flat area of rock right next to the head of a deep canyon covered completely in fog. As it turns out, the actual trip planned could have been done in two days if they hadn't stopped here. The reason for this stop was that a day would be dedicated to the planned 'friendly spars'. Whatever it was that the caravan heads hoped to get inside the fog was valuable enough that the seven of them had decided to come together and risk a canyon known far and wide as the death-seekers canyon! The place, h
Chapter 229
It was to the point that Greg had to moderate the amount of strength he revealed to his teacher to keep him, and the Krethna in turn, from growing suspicious of him. He'd already messed up enough delves by revealing too much of his power, Greg didn't want a repeat of the same. Comfortable with the amount of strength Greg displayed, his teacher gave him a two-finger archery glove, a longbow, and no arrows. They weren't about to start shooting at anything yet. Instead, Greg was going to learn proper form when shooting. When his teacher told him that he'd only have to draw and release the bow a hundred times, Greg thought it was too easy a task. Little did he know that he was in for the most miserable two hours of training he'd had in this life. Proper form for his teacher wasn't just about how Greg was standing or how he pulled on the bow. No, Greg had to orient his feet correctly, have his torso facing off to the side, not forward like he was about to run after the arrow. He couldn't
Chapter 230
It was an odd and contradictory thought, but that's the feeling Greg got as he watched the caravan heads mingle with one another. Several times on previous runs, Greg had managed to make it this far. Only, in those runs, Greg was the one interacting with the other Krethnas. Having killed his own caravan head and lost the support of his mages, he would bring what remained of his force to this place, begin to interact with the other caravan heads only for the delve to end a few minutes later because those of his caravan defected to other caravan heads. Greg hadn't really gotten to know any of them that well, given how quickly his caravan fell apart. What little time he got with them, however, had been enough for him to get the impression that the smiles on their faces wouldn't even twitch if they were driving a dagger into his heart.Prey that sees anything other than teeth when a predator smiles won't live long. A proverb from Roka's hometown perfectly encapsulated the scene playing be
