Chapter 231
Naturally, Greg had questioned whether he even wanted to bother. Why not just stick with the school of life? His teacher was after all a healer herself, and from what he had seen of her, she was a powerful mage in her own right. Rather than split his efforts in two directions, going after being a healer and an earth mage, why not just take the boon of a high affinity in healing magic that had unexpectedly fallen onto his lap and run with that? As he stood by the tent opening watching the earth mages raise a whole amphitheater in a matter of hours, however, Greg had his answer. Healing was a powerful school of magic, no doubt about it. But something within him was completely enamored by the power that was on display before him. The mages serving as caravan escorts were peak second-tier mages or early third-tier mages by Greg's estimate. And yet, they were already capable of this much. How much was a fourth, fifth, or even sixth-tier mage capable of? At the seventh tier, wouldn't one be
Chapter 232
Greg wasn't just being dramatic for no reason. This may have been a spur-of-the-moment move, but it was a calculated risk on his part. The main problem that Greg had faced in all his past runs was finding a way to reveal his true power without arousing suspicion from the Krethna. On this run, he'd managed to keep it hidden thus far. He, however, doubted that he'd be able to go the whole run without having to fight at full strength, especially given the unsettling feeling he got from the fog. The last thing he needed was his allies growing suspicious of him right when they were in the thick of it. But if he dropped hints here and there and seeded them with the idea that he was far stronger than they thought him to be, then it wouldn't come as that much of a shock to them when Greg broke out with more power than expected. Of course, there was the very real chance that he had just doomed this run. This, after all, wasn't something that he'd thought through at length, just a move he'd c

You didn't answer my question," was Greg's simple reply to the woman's words. An annoyed sigh left the Krethna's wife as her hand rose to pinch the bridge of her nose. "I could have sent a guard to tell you that we don't want you fighting Athnas. I, however, chose to come personally hoping to show you that we don't look down on you, Roka! My husband and I are impressed with your performance so far. There is no need to throw your life away just because of your ego!" she half-argued, half-pleaded. Greg could get where they were coming from. Having him go against someone who had trained a good number of their elites must have seemed like a pointless fight. He was, in their eyes, a recent upstart with barely any experience who didn't yet know what he didn't know. Perhaps they thought he was eager to prove himself which was why she told him they approved of him. Or maybe they thought his ego was fragile enough that Athnas' taunts would get to him. But far from that, Greg's confidence did
Chapter 234
Inside the large amphitheater, seven spacious viewing booths were affixed to the outer wall high up in the stands. Each Krethna, their family if they had any, and elite guards occupied a booth of their own. This, of course, was minus the forty-two elites that had been chosen to fight. They, instead were in the open grounds below, already armed to the teeth and ready to fight. The stands were already full to the brim. The Krethnas might not have liked each other. That dislike, however, clearly wasn't shared by the merchants under them as they freely interacted in the stands, speaking loudly and laughing with one another. The setup for the fights that were about to take place was rather simple and yet somewhat complicated at the same time. Each of the seven Krethnas was represented by six fighters. These teams were ranked from first to seventh. Greg had thought that it was simply a matter of vanity that his Krethna was proud to be the first to reach the meeting point. As it turns out,
Chapter 235
An older man in long flowy robes walked out into the middle of the arena. With his sharp eyesight, Greg could see his lips moving, he, however, couldn't hear a thing over the din of the crowd. This shouldn't have come as that much of a surprise to Greg. In this largely medieval world, there weren't any speaker systems. Perhaps the man wasn't meant to address the crowd, but the fighters inside the arena... "Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Mage Etha, an air mage," Greg's brow almost floated off his forehead as the man's voice suddenly filled every corner of the large amphitheater. It only now occurred to Greg that the words he'd been muttering before were probably a spell form to enhance his voice. "A request has been made of me to oversee the fights and help adjudicate should any contentions arise. I will also be providing commentary on the fights for those not close to the action. Now, allow me to lay out the rules..." Greg unconsciously tuned out the man, already familiar with s
Chapter 236
Greg's misgivings crystallized when the mage gave the signal for the match to start. To the common, and even some trained eyes, the fight must have seemed like a fierce one, full of drive and skill. Greg, however, engaged in no-holds-barred fights with his familiar daily, fights that were only ever a single healing potion away from being actual death matches. To someone like him, what he was looking at was little more than a sham. He could easily pick up on how the two fighters subtly pulled back their attacks at the last moments, targeting less sensitive areas than what was open to the attacker at the moment of the strike. He could easily see all the opportunities to attack that the two fighters often let pass by when they could have easily taken advantage of to devastating effect.A smile slowly started to creep onto Greg's face even as he looked down at the performance being put on before them. "I should have known it was a bit too easy," he muttered with a sigh. Greg had been quie

Krethna!" With the arrangement of the seats in the booth, the caravan head had the front seat, with his wife beside him and all the elites seated in the row behind him. Greg was nowhere near important enough, or trusted enough for that matter, to sit directly behind the man. Instead, he was seated at the very end of the row behind the Krethna, next to his teacher. With only nine elites present in the booth, the caravan head was only four people away, still, he had to be a bit loud when calling to him. Though his voice remained calm, something about the seriousness of his tone, however, must have caught the attention of everyone around as it wasn't just the caravan head that turned in his direction. The man, his wife, and a good six or seven of the elites turned in his direction. Still, Greg remained unbothered as he spoke. "How long would you say Athnas was in your service?" A mix of confusion and annoyance registered in the man's expression at the question. Whether it was over bei
Chapter 238
If the one who replaced him as leader of the guards is willing to face him in the arena, he'd be willing to relinquish the position of first place! Your choices at this point will be to either refuse his challenge, which will be no different from confessing that he was right about your caravan and how weak it is. Or..." A chilling smile slowly crossed Greg's lips. "You can send me down there," he said. Cheers erupted from the spectators filling the amphitheater as, unsurprisingly, the fighter from the seventh-ranked team finally managed to best the fighter from Athnas' team. With this win, they'd rise from seventh to second place. But while the crowds were jubilant from the fight they'd just witnessed and the narrow 'win' the victor had had managed to get, the booth they were in had gone deathly quiet. The expressions of the elites in the booth ranged from disappointed-neutral, to one of molten rage at the betrayal as they looked down at the fighters below leaving the stage. The Kre
Chapter 239
After running this dungeon several times, Greg knew all too well that the merchants under a given Krethna were only loyal so long as they thought you capable of protecting them. The moment that your abilities came into question, they'd abandon ship at the very first opportunity. Perhaps Krethna Rohan wouldn't lose as many merchants as Greg had during his run. After all, unlike Greg, he wasn't a usurper and based on the lore of the dungeon, had been a caravan head for several years. A few of the merchants under him would probably still be willing to take their chances with him. Still, if those who left were a significant enough portion, the man's ability to negotiate for any rewards from this venture would be essentially crippled, if not worse. In short, whether this venture proved to be fruitful for him as Krethna or the end of his career, now rested entirely on Greg. "So, the question isn't what I want Krethna. Rather, you should be asking yourself, how much are you willing to lose
Chapter 240
You said it yourself, I don't even know how skilled a fighter you are. You are asking me to promise half of everything I will earn from this venture to you when I have no guarantees about your ability. How do I know that this isn't some elaborate trick? Athnas served me for several cycles and still betrayed me and now I'm supposed to just trust you, someone I only met just a day ago? How do I know that you aren't some conspirator he left behind to further damage me?" The man asked, anger rising in his voice as he spoke.Greg wasn't at all moved by the man's ire, recognizing it for the pretense that it was. One didn't even have to think long to realize just how nonsensical his accusation was. Athnas would have to be a complete fool to betray one Krethna for another, only to lose the treasure of the second Krethna to the one he betrayed in the beginning all in hopes of getting some cut of the proceeds. The man had to pretend to get angry to distract from the irrationality of such a conv
