It wasn't just her words, Greg remembered what happened when he picked the personal pocket space as a reward. Unlike the healer, he didn't get a paralytic, instead, some external force had taken hold of him and kept him from moving while it worked. He could even remember the pain. It had been horrendous and if he hadn't been distracted by Morpheus at the time, he suspected that the memory would have been more traumatic for him. Greg had looked at the formation etched into his spirit body over the months that followed and knew that as much as it hurt, the thing was superficial. Greg couldn't help but blanch in horror as he realized that what they planned to do with the healer wasn't in any way superficial. Her mana pathways were to her spirit body what blood vessels were to the physical body. Comparing what he

The only part of the man that would let you know that there was more to him were his eyes. They weren't exactly cold. Rather, they bore the hard gaze of someone who had seen it all, the good, bad, and ugly of life, and thus wasn't phased by much in life. He looked like a man who would maintain the same placid expression even in the middle of a storm. Of course, Calyn was aware that, like his son, the Governor was an illusionist. Unlike Deriel, however, the man was a sixth-tier mage. A fact that necessitated that she take everything with a grain of salt. At the sixth tier, he could present himself as a dog and Calyn, a second-tier mage, would be too busy petting him to notice that something was off. This was also the reason she wasn't all that surprised when she didn't get a sense of the man's aura or what aspect he had chosen. All mages to one degree or another di

The presentation ceremony had been a whirlwind of meeting and greeting everyone in attendance. Calyn had been careful to mark the faces and names of the ten people closest to the Governor. This isn't to say that she didn't try to remember the others, but there were about sixty people in attendance. Just five minutes of conversation, barely enough time to get to know the one he was talking to, and five hours had gone by. Of course, not all conversations were exactly five minutes long. With the more important figures, Calyn spent up to fifteen minutes in conversation with them. Toward the end, with the less important figures, Calyn was doing little more than getting their names, exchanging pleasantries for a minute or two before thanking them for coming. But while the presentation ceremony was a hectic affair of trying to get some impression of everyone in attenda

Her father's words were replaying in her head and unpleasant as they had sounded at the time, she couldn't help but see the reality of them. "Sometimes, it's not the big decisions that undo a leader. Oftentimes, it's the several little decisions they made along the way that compose the venom that does them in. If you want to be a good leader Calyn, then you can never shy away from doing what must be done. You will be considered cold. You will be thought of as cruel when you do. People won't like you and more than likely, you will sow seeds of hatred when you do. None of that matters! So long as they know that you will never shy away from doing what needs to be done regardless of what opinion they hold of you, then that's enough." The day these words were spoken was the first time Calyn kill

Another day had passed and this time Greg found himself having to fight the urge to despair. The first time the healer had spoken of having her mana pathways dissolved, she stated that it was usually done by someone of a higher tier than the one who was getting their mana pathways dissolved. It's only now that Greg understood why. Going into this, Greg had known that dissolving his teacher's mana pathways would be an uphill climb. The first day had been rather easy, where roughly sixty percent of his teacher's mana pathways were dissolved. It was remarkable progress and Greg had tried to guard against becoming too optimistic about what lay ahead. As it turns out, however, he hadn't been pessimistic enough. If his teacher had been from any other school of magic, the task would have still been hard. But she was a healer, something that made the task before him next

"Quite the contrary, Deriel, it is you that thinks me blind?" She stated in an equally scathing tone, catching the Governor's son off with just how fierce she'd suddenly become. "Do you think I don't see the way you look at my cousin Nerissa? Do you think I'm blind to the lingering looks and touches?" She questioned. "I only entertain your cousin and everyone else from your clan as a good host should!" The man countered. It was a good excuse. Calyn would have even believed it if not for the fact that he couldn't meet her gaze when he delivered it, his eyes briefly moving to the side before he seemed to catch himself. There was also the subtle rise in the octave of his tone that didn't help things either. "Tell me, Deriel, in your capacity as a good host, do you plan to spread the legs of th

Aunt Lina," Calyn called out with a smile as she met with her in the garden of the Governor's castle. All around them were flower beds planted in tasteful patterns that created an ambiance of relaxation. Calyn offered her Aunt a bow in recognition of both her higher tier and her role as a chaperone before she took a seat on the bench beside her. The first ten minutes were spent exchanging pleasantries and talking about nothing in particular. Eventually, however, her Aunt's expression became serious. "I would be happy to spend the whole afternoon talking with you Calyn. However, something tells me that this isn't just a social visit," she stated, clearly waiting for her to reveal what she was after. "It isn't," Calyn agreed, her expression becoming serious as well. "I want you to send Nerissa home," she stated plainly. She might have been the one about to get married, but the one in charge of their entourage was Aunt Lina, her chaperone. Her opinion as the bride carried much weight

Calyn didn't miss the way her jaw clenched as Aunt Lina pulled the memory pearl away from her temple. She'd been placed into a corner. While she had the last say in whether someone was taken out of the bride's entourage or not, that was only in cases where the person in question wasn't trying to derail the marriage. If Calyn could provide evidence that someone in her entourage was trying to sabotage her prospective marriage, then all choice was taken away from her chaperone. She would have to send that person away. The accusation she'd made at Deriel and his reaction to it wasn't exactly foolproof evidence. Still, anyone who saw it would understand that something was going on between Deriel and Nerissa. If her Aunt ignored it and later the marriage didn't happen because of it, she would have to bear the blame for the failure. Calyn doubted that her Aunt wanted to

The air around the table was frigid. Calyn had her gaze fixed on the food before her as she calmly cut it into small portions before spearing a piece and bringing it to her mouth. But despite the smooth calm in each of her motions, anyone who met her gaze even for a second would see that boiling rage that she was keeping barely contained. Seated beside her, and to the right-hand side of the Governor who was at the head of the table, was Deriel. As had been the usual with him these past few weeks, he was giving her a cold shoulder, not that she cared. Seated opposite her on the other side of the table, was her cousin, Nerissa. Of those present, she was the only one who was smiling as if she was privy to some amusing secret that the rest of them were unaware of. Seated closest to the Governor on the left side of the table, was her chaperone, Aunt Lina. She was barely eating, her contemplative expression betraying the fact that she was lost in thought. Calyn could understand why the wom

It did sting to lose what she had worked for, but Calyn had had a week to consider and think it through. The first thing that her aunt had done when Nerissa had dropped the news on them was to cast several silencing and obfuscation spells around them to keep any prying ears and unwanted eyes from seeing them. She'd then gone on to ask if Nerissa had told either Deriel or the Governor. Calyn hadn't been able to keep from shaking at the tone of her aunt's voice. The woman had raised her, and Calyn was familiar with the tone she used whenever she was annoyed with someone. This time, Aunt Lina wasn't just upset, she was livid! Given how perceptive she usually was, Calyn knew that Nerissa must have noticed her aunt's reaction to the news. She, however, was too used to games of political intrigue to let any fear show on her face. Her political savvy, however, didn't keep her from turning in midair, her head momentarily switching positions with her feet, after she'd answered in the negativ
