The sting of lost ascension resources, plus the awkward position that Nerissa had put Aunt Lina in made it so that Calyn's anger wasn't entirely feigned. A large majority of it, however, was performative. Calyn had already made peace with her loss in this matter and was already planning her next move. But just because she was over the whole situation, didn't mean that she was going to make it easy on them. While she wasn't Nerissa, Calyn knew enough about politics to know that she'd only get enough compensation to placate her and no more. In truth, losing Deriel was not that big an issue to her. It was just a small bump in the path of her ascension and nothing more. Should she act that way, however, then the compensation she'd get both from the Governor's household and her clan would be a pittance. The more upset she pretended to be, the more both parties would

The Governor's suffocating aura filled the room pressing down on everyone save for Deriel as he turned to glare at Calyn. "You threatened my son's life?" He questioned in a voice that was somehow even colder than before.Glowing aura shields materialized around both Nerissa and herself shutting out most of the Governor's aura. What little got through still caused them some discomfort but was nowhere near as suffocating as it had been only a moment before. Neither she nor Nerissa were powerful enough to stave off the Governor's aura, so both of them immediately turned to her aunt. "Yes, she did" Aunt Lina growled, suddenly looking like a mother bear, ready to protect her young. Being a body-enhancing mage, she had probably used some item to shield Calyn and her cousin from the Governor's aura. She, however, endured it directly and didn't look the least bit suppress
Chapter 33
Even with these injuries, a body-enhancing mage can go on for quite some time before they succumb to them. Calyn doubted that the same was true of an illusionist like Deriel. He needed the attention of a healer and fast. There was, however, no hurry or sense of urgency in the Governor as he moved to stand over his son. "You accuse her of calling into question this family's honor when she accused you of sleeping with her cousin," the Governor didn't raise his voice. Calyn, however, doubted that even the heart of a glacier could be this cold. "Then what have you done by impregnating her cousin?" The man growled, his leg rising and coming down hard on Deriel's forearm. There was a loud snap as the bones in the young man's forearm broke under his father's foot. If Deriel could still breathe properly, he probably would have been screaming in pain. In his present state, however, all that left Deriel was a sharp wheeze even as he struggled to breathe. "It would seem that I have coddled you
Chapter 34
"What are you doing?"Greg paused for a second at Olivia's question. His hands, however, resumed their motion as he reached forward and pulled the mana-draining ring off his teacher's finger. A part of him didn't want to answer the question. Not because he had anything against Olivia but simply because he was torn on what the correct approach was. Despite how peaceful his teacher looked, Greg had constantly been reminding himself that she was every bit as awake as if she had been sitting across from him. Short of visually seeing him, the healer could hear everything he said and feel everything he did. When you are a doctor working on a patient and something goes seriously wrong during the procedure, do you inform them out of an obligation to be fully transparent with them? Or do you lie in order to keep them calm and give them hope? This was the dilemma that Greg was facing. After ten whole days of relentlessly trying to chip away at the final ten percent of the healer's mana pathways

His exact words to me were, "Mortals die, Roka, that's just something I'm going to have to make peace with," he quoted, switching out his real name. Greg couldn't help but notice the slight bit of disappointment from Olivia. Her true self was probably very interested in Morpheus and would have loved any chance to learn something more about him, even if indirectly. Whether this was purely out of curiosity or some other nefarious motive, Greg didn't know. But while there was disappointment in her expression, there was zero surprise. To beings like them, mortal lives probably did not mean all that much. The fact that another was about to drop dead was just the natural order of things and nothing to get worked up over. Greg had to press his lips together to keep from giving voice to the anger that

Greg had carefully monitored his teacher for an hour after taking off the mana-draining ring. Either the potion they fed his teacher to inhibit any absorption of mana was more effective than he'd given it credit for. Or mana pathways played a greater role in mana absorption than Greg knew. Greg had no idea which was the case. Either way, with ninety percent of her mana pathways gone and the potion inside her, barely a trickle of mana had entered her mana core in that time. From what he could see, it'd take a few hours before she had anywhere near enough mana for Greg to work with. It was enough time for Greg to take a short break. He could step out, catch a breath of fresh air, check up on his family, and take a moment to calm his nerves in preparation for the delicate process that still lay ahead of him. He couldn't let himself sleep though. After more than a m

A chuckle escaped his mother, her gaze far away as she went over her memories with Roka's dad. "I eventually gave up trying to get him to open up. I'd just watch him closely and whenever I thought that things weren't going right for him, I'd be there with him to offer him whatever comfort I could. In the moment, I could tell that he appreciated it, but he'd always be embarrassed right after like he'd been caught doing something he shouldn't," she explained with a pointed look at him. Greg couldn't help the color that spread on his cheeks at her words. At the same time, however, he couldn't help feeling of connection to the father that he'd never met in this life."How about you mother? How have you and Tayani been holding up?" Greg asked partly to turn the attention away from himself, but largely because he truly cared. "I know it hasn't been easy on you staying in this place," Greg stated looking around. Even from here, he could see a few forms moving around covered in what looked li

But some idle time to decompress from all that was going on is exactly what he needed at present. Sitting down on the grass, he planned to learn this strange game and while the time away till he needed to go back to working on the healer. As often is the case in life, however, things didn't go as planned. The board game before him was a multiplayer war game where one had armies and resources. And through clever planning and strategizing, one was supposed to try and conquer the whole board. Greg had just started to get into the game, when they noticed that the number of 'ghost' people moving about in this strange space had suddenly spiked. The increase in numbers itself wasn't what caught their attention but rather the nervous energy everyone seemed to be exuding. Even covered up as they were, G

There was no way he was going to be as delicate in his approach as this procedure demanded. Any time he let up the pressure on her mana, it would stop wherever it was. Like oil and water, her mana and his would just separate into two. Her more concentrated mana will then slowly start flowing back toward her core while his floundered uselessly in her remaining mana pathways. If he used her mana as is, it'd be like trying to thread a needle using thread that bucked back and forth with the strength of a python. There was just simply no way he'd be able to do this with the right amount of precision to avoid collateral damage. "I need your help teacher," Greg spoke up quietly, not letting any of the crushing shame he felt be heard as he uttered the words. This was no different from torturing someone for days on end, then handing them the tools of torture, and asking them to continue by themselves because you are tired. His mother, however, had been right when she said he couldn't do ever
Chapter 40
Greg might have only had enough mana to match a second-tier mage, his mana channels, however, were hardened enough to channel up to tier-four mana. During his awakening to the first tier, Morpheus had also reawakened and forced his body to absorb all the mana inside a purple mana crystal. A mana crystal so chock-full of mana that it was itself considered a source mana crystal, capable of turning rock around it into mana crystals if allowed to discharge its mana to the environment. So much was the mana inside the purple mana crystal that the very sigil that Greg had been sitting on had been turned to crystal because of the vast amount of mana that had been made to flow it in a matter of seconds. Holding that much mana inside him had forced his mana pathways to swell like sausages. It's probably only because Morpheus had access to magic that Greg couldn't even dream of that his mana pathways didn't pop like overblown balloons. In the month that followed, while Greg was passed out, his p
