Chapter 51
LISA'S DISCOVERY “Lisa, you were still awake?” Mrs. Stone said from the hallway. She stood by the door looking at Lisa as though she was peeping on her, her hand holding the frame of the door in place. Lisa didn’t look up from the laptop. “I would be,” she said. “For a while.” There was silence for a while, as neither of them spoke to each other. Mrs. Stone watched her daughter’s profile, the sharp line of concentration, the way her fingers rested lightly on the trackpad, unmoving unless it was necessary and then she moved a bit. “Don’t stay up too late,” her mother said at last. Lisa nodded, though she knew her mother had already decided something else. She always did. The door closed softly and Lisa exhaled only after the latch cli

THE BACK DETAILS OF NIGHTINGALE ****Lisa left very early in the morning the next day to go see her sister in her apartment. She was not feeling easy and needed to see her. When she got to her house, she knocked and it was opened in no time. “You were early.” Mara didn’t look surprised when she opened the door. That, more than anything, unsettled Lisa. “I didn’t call,” Lisa said. “I know.” The apartment smelled like brewed coffee and paper, not the polished kind Lisa was used to. Stacks of printouts sat neatly on the dining table, it was a habit Mara picked up years ago. Mara stepped aside, barefoot on the tiled floor. “You usually came with a warning. Or an excuse.” Lisa walked in anywa

THE SECRET ROOM Then she asked the question she had been holding back. “Why would someone inside protect Orland Hyde?” The question landed like a crack and Lisa just stared and didn’t answer it because she didn’t know how to answer it. Mara looked at her for a while, but she looked away not wanting to answer the question yet. “I'll be in the room first, when you have answers for me, call me..” Mara said and walked towards her room. ___ MANUEL'S VILLA The room Manuel chose wasn’t on any official blueprint. It was the one on the west wing of the old Nightingale building, past corridors that no longer carried foot traffic, behind a door that still used a physical lock no one remembered installing. LAURA'S INTERVENTION Victor didn’t answer, he just looked away as though he didn't hear the question. Manuel turned toward the door, then stopped. “If I ask you to move,” he said, “will you?” Elias didn’t hesitate. “We never stopped.” Manuel nodded, unlocked the door, and stepped then stepped out. He got home in no time and he was welcomed warmly like it wasn't his. “You’re back late, sir. Should I serve your food now?!” Manuel stopped just past the door, the door closing behind him with a thud sound. He loosened his tie slowly, his fingers stiff. “No,” he said after a pause. “Don’t serve the food.” A pause came before she spoke, fingers folded just above the edge of her apron,

FIGHTING THE UNKNOWN Orland was seated reading a book and watching his watch closely. He was expecting someone, but the person wasn't there yet and he felt like his time was unnecessarily delayed. What's she doing?! He thought, checking his time again, more irritated than before. “Is she on her way?!” He asked one of the guards he kept at his door for security reasons. “Not yet..” he replied, looking outside to see if Mrs. Stone was already coming or not. Sone, she arrived and when he saw her, he frowned a bit to remind her she was late.“You’re late,” Orland said mildly, not looking up from the document in his hand.Lisa’s mother paused just inside the private lounge, her heels clicking on the floor before she stilled herself. The room was quiet in the way only powerful men’s spaces ever were, no excess.“I came when I was ready,” she replied smoothly. “Power doesn’t rush.”Orland smiled faintly at that. Still, he didn’t invite her to sit.She took a seat anyway. The last time

A SUDDEN CALL Jamie was in the sitting room, watching one of his favorite channels on television, he was holding a glass of wine in his right hand, smiling widely.Suddenly, one of the guards in the house knocked and he allowed him in. He presented a wrapped letter to him and then left without a word and Jamie didn't bother asking him either. He kept the drink aside and quickly unwrapped the letter to read the content. BOARD SESSION. Attendance required. 7:00 AM.It was written in bold on the letter and he checked to see if there was any other detail, but he saw none. The summons arrived without ceremony. No letterhead and no explanation. Just a short message routed through internal channels Jamie hadn’t used in months. The guard had brought it from there. Whenever he got things from that route, he knew it was somehow important.Jamie read it twice, then once more, slower. He didn’t react right away. He finished his drink, rinsed the mug, set it upside down like always.By the tim

MANUEL’S MOVE Jamie’s jaw tightened, staring straight at her. “Who?”“I don’t know yet,” she admitted. “But I know this: they’re shaping the narrative already. And they need a face.”Jamie nodded and now understood better. He wondered if that was what she came to the office earlier to do.“And you won’t give them everything.”“No...”“But you’re giving me this.”“Yes.”He studied her again. “Because you think I’ll be in the line of fire.”“Because you already are.”There was silence for a while. Jamie thought of the boardroom. The questions that weren’t questions. The warning dressed as concern.“They want me neutral,” he said slowly. “So I can be moved where they need me.”Lisa’s voice was steady. “Neutrality is the easiest position to sacrifice.”He looked down at the table, then back up. “What aren’t you telling me?”She didn’t answer right away.“I can’t,” she said finally. “Not yet.”Jamie exhaled. “Then tell me this. If it comes down to it, do you trust me?”“Yes,” she said, w

ANOTHER LINE OF TASK Manuel exhaled slowly.“So,” he murmured. “You survived.”He straightened, his expression smoothing back to a more calmer one.“Continue the audit,” he said. “Quietly.”As the analyst left, Manuel remained staring at the name, his mind already moving several steps ahead. He smiled faintly, tapping his fingers on the desk, the idea of what he needed to do was coming to him now.He picked up his phone and dialed Laura's number. “Come to the office.” He said and then the line went dead. In no time, Laura knocked at his door and he ushered her in and asked her to sit. He looked at her and then presented the list to her, the names with date and the files that were given to him that morning.Laura took it and stared at it for a while, she opened the first slide and then saw the names attached. “These names….” She tried to say something, but ended up staring at Manuel for a moment. Manuel smiled and then stood, tucking his both arms in his pocket like always. “My

THE LEAK “I found more,” Mara said. “And you don’t say a word to anyone just yet…”“I promise,” Lisa replied.Mara nodded, “I will send the details through email..” “I'll be waiting.’ Lisa responded, a bit eager.Mara ended the call and turned back to the window. The rain had stopped a bit, but it was still dropping.Someone inside Nightingale had protected Orland Hyde and was trying to shift the blame.Mara shut the laptop slowly, yawning as exhaustion swept over her.*****ORLAND'S ESTATE The morning looked dull after the heavy rain, it looked as though the whole street were swept inside by the rain. Orland watched as the car moved out of the estate and how others came in, he saw the guards move in and out all organized and coordinated. He nodded after seeing the whole display from the CCTV, he stood and walked over the window, his both arms entwined, like he was doing something impossible. He stood by the glass for a moment before returning to his desk.Today was supposed to be

THE NIGHT MANUEL IS NAMED The boardroom was filled with more people than expected. It was 2:00pm in the afternoon, and even with the air conditioning inside, everyone inside seemed to be sweating hard, their expressions hardened. They all had a document in front of them, but none of them touched it, they just whispered within themselves, some hissing as though regretting an action. Soon, Manuel stepped in and everywhere turned silent at once like they were not talking a few minutes ago. Manuel’s eyes swept through the whole room, Laura was standing by the door, in case of anything, so she could step in. Manuel had asked her to stay there and just watch the whole meeting.Manuel stood at the head of the table, looking at them one after the other, but when he did, they would throw their face away as though avoiding his gaze. There were no papers in his hands and no screen behind him, he stepped in with bare hands and his gaze. The board members sat upright, shoulders stiff, eyes ale
