Chapter 61
WHAT LISA FINALLY SAW Lisa didn’t announce herself when she entered the house. It was evening, and the whole house was usually quiet and it looked like no one was living there. She entered the house and went directly inside, looking at the corners as though looking for something she lost. Usually, anytime she wasn't around, the whole house would look weird and she was only feeling that way because Mara wasn't living with them. When she got to the sitting room, she stopped at the doorway, as she saw her mother sitting and very focused on the book in her arms. She wore her glasses and a drink was placed on the stool close to her chair, she'd glance at a page and then turn to the other, her eyes moving faster than usual. Her tablet was on her laps and it looked as though she was looking at both things at the same time.

THE DECISION JAMIE MAKES Lisa didn’t answer, she crossed her arms around herself.“I chose long ago,” her mother said. “That’s what you’re struggling to accept.”Lisa adjusted the strap of her bag.“I see you now,” she said. Her mother studied her. “And what do you see?”Lisa looked at her and drew closer, a smirk playing out on her lips. “You are not the pawn,” she said. “You are an architect.”Her mother didn’t respond. Lisa turned and walked toward the door. But, before she could open the door, her mother spoke in a low tone.“Be careful,” she said. “Once you understand the structure, you can’t unsee it.”Lisa paused. “I’m not trying to anymore,” she said. She left without slamming the door. The house absorbed the sound as it always had.Her mother stood up immediately she left and then started pacing, she bent and picked up the tablet again, scrolling through it.___JAMIE'S APARTMENTJamie didn’t sleep throughout the night, his thoughts were on the edge.By morning, the city out

WHAT WAS NEVER MEANT TO SURFACE Orland saw it within seconds, he was in his office when the notification came through. He didn’t open it immediately. He read the headline first, then the subtext beneath it.Jamie’s name.Orland exhaled slowly and leaned back in his chair.“So,” he murmured. “He chose a side.”He opened the statement and read it line by line. The absence of accusation irritated him more than an outright attack would have.Jamie hadn’t swung wildly. Orland stood and walked to the window, hands clasped behind his back.He was expecting a strike, so he could destroy him completely, but that wasn't what he got. Jamie hadn’t destroyed him, but it looked like he’d made him visible.“Interesting,” Orland said softly. He turned back to his desk and picked up his phone.“Get me everything Jamie’s touched in the last six months,” he said. “Every meeting. Every email and every conversation.”He paused. “And prepare a response,” he added. “Not now. Soon….”He ended the call and

The QUIET GAP Manuel straightened, his eyes on the computer before him more squarely, and his both arms tucked in his pocket.“Secure this,” he said. “Every fragment and every reconstruction. Nothing leaves this room unless I authorize it.”Elias nodded immediately. “Already isolated.”“And no copies,” Manuel added. “Not yet.”Kellan frowned slightly. “Even from the board?”Manuel looked at him. “Especially from the board.”They understood. Manuel stepped back, eyes returning to the name on the screen. This truth didn’t just absolve him, it reframed everything. The leaks, alteration and even Orland’s confidence. This wasn’t a power grab, it was a preservation of a lie that everyone has been telling. Manuel turned toward the door.“We proceed carefully,” he said. “If this comes out wrong, Nightingale doesn’t survive the correction.”Elias nodded. “And if it stays buried?”Manuel paused, placing his hand on the door. “Then the lie continues,” he said. “And so does the war.”He opened

WHAT SHE GAVE THEM Mara was pushed inside and the door slammed shut. The van pulled away, but by the time anyone noticed the spilled groceries on the sidewalk, Mara Stone was already gone. When Mara opened her eyes again, she saw that she was in a strange building. She glanced around, but she didn't recognize anything at all and she got scared. She heard water drip by the corner. She was tasty all of a sudden, but she couldn't go there because her arms and legs were tied in place so she wouldn't escape.Who are these people?! She thought, her eyes red and her clothes a little torn. She struggled to sit well, but she felt pain on her body and her wrists ached, still no one was on sight. Then she remembered how it all happened. The lady had appeared, with men who were standing like they didn't care. But, he couldn't recognize any of them. She shifted slightly, she tried to shout, but her voice cracked. Suddenly, someone spoke behind her.“Don’t move,” a voice said.Mara froze, even

THE LONG WAY HOME Mara sank down onto the gravel, her back against the wall, pain exploding all over her body.“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I didn’t tell them much. Just… what I already told you.”“You did enough,” Lisa said. “You did more than enough.”Sirens sounded faintly in the distance and Mara closed her eyes, pressing her forehead to her knees.Lisa was in the car, looking at the location Mara sent and as they approached, she pointed at a corner.“There,” Lisa said, pointing. The place was exposed and Mara was lying outside, waiting for them to come fetch her, she was holding up well, her gaze up to the sky. They saw her shortly as Lisa rushed quickly over to her, panting heaving as though she had been running.Mrs. Stone was behind her, but farther from where she was, her eyes red from what she feared the most, her hands were held out to her heart.“Mara,” Lisa breathed. She was out of the car before it fully stopped.“Mara… hey. I’m here.”Mara lifted her head slowly as her

BLOOD ON THE SINK Lisa started cleaning the wounds and then she helped Mara into another clean shirt.By the time they got her into bed, exhaustion had taken her. She barely protested when Lisa pulled the blanket up.Lisa sat on the edge of the bed, phone still in her hand.“Mara,” she said and she opened her eyes to look at her and Mara spoke before she did.“They knew Nightingale better than I do,” she murmured.Lisa leaned in. “What?”“They weren’t guessing,” Mara whispered. “They knew where to look.”Her grip on the blanket tightened and then it loosened.“I should sleep now, we'll talk better by morning…” Mara said, and then she gripped the pillow well and drifted off. Lisa looked at her, her arms crossed over her chest, and her face tightened. She was feeling pity for Mara, but she was also ang

THE DREAM “Should I get you coffee, Miss Lisa?!” One of her servants asked as she was standing outside. She shook her head, she didn't want one and so the servant left. After standing for a while, she heaved and went back inside, her mother wasn't in the room anymore. Suddenly, Mara stirred awake. Lisa went closer and held her hands. “Are you alright?! You haven't slept for long….” Lisa said, staring straight at her. Mara giggled, “I thought you would be sleeping now…” Lisa climbed the bed and sat close to her, “I couldn't sleep yet.”Mara nodded and drew closer, “you don't have to worry about anything..” Lisa nodded, a smirk on her face as she hugged Mara carefully.Mrs. Stone stood by the doorway for a long moment, watching both her daughters without saying anything.“You both need to sleep,” she said finally as she drew closer to them.Lisa looked like she wanted to argue, but Mara placed her hand on hers to calm her and that made her chuckle.Mara hadn’t said much since th

LINES DRAWN Lisa picked the phone and placed it on her ear, adjusting a little to feel more comfortable. But then, Mara wasn't fully sleeping yet and Lisa quickly climbed out of the bed and went to the corridor to make the call. “What's up, Lucas?!” Lisa asked the moment she was outside, checking each corners as though she was suspecting someone was peeping on her.“I just wanted to check on you and tell you that I've finally stepped down..” he said in a low tone.“You did??” Lisa asked, but was wondering why he had to call late, if that was what he wanted to share.Lucas nodded even though Lisa couldn't see him.“Yes, I want to see their reaction.” Jamie said finally. He was moving back and forth in his room, one of his hand tucked in his pocket. “...Mara was abducted earlier, but we've found her..” Lisa said, but then she regretted saying it because she knew Jamie would ask her more in details how it happened.Jamie didn't fall short of her expectation, he asked straight up.“H

THE PRESSURE POINTS “I did what I had to do!” Jamie said, staring straight at him. Lucas came back inside and then slammed his fist on the desk. “You'll not sabotage everything I've done!!” Jamie was shocked, he hadn't seen his father that angry, and the look on his face showed that he was very serious, but that didn't matter to him now.“You can't control my life!!” Jamie said, standing up to him. Lucas was surprised that Jamie was gaining strength and now he was talking back at him.He nodded, still holding the folder in his hands.“Is this about Lisa?!” Lucas asked, going closer to him. “Do you think she cares about you?!!” Lucas yelled, his face almost colliding with Jamie's face. Jamie couldn't respond and after a while of silence, Lucas left the office and that was when Jamie heaved a sign of relief. “Why does he keep asking?!!” Jamie murmured, staring into the distance.Just then, one of the staff came in, it was the secretary. “Sir, the meeting is by 2pm.” She said and
