Chapter 51
“The human partner is Kyle Dalton. He is a Claimed of Dice, who ended up joining the Nightblades shortly after arriving in Melromac. He took levels in the [Outlaw] class and had a short—”“Dalton,” Kia interrupted him. “His family name is Dalton, and he started as an Outlaw?”“Yes, he was predisposed for evil. Imagine if his name had been Dick Dalton.” Kia couldn’t help but chuckle. “Anyway, he worked for the Nightblades syndicate in Noblecoeur before leaving to become an adventurer. He was hired by the Marquise of Carabas through the Valen chapter of the adventurer guild to recover a rapier, which led him to Sen’s lair. We do not know what happened there, but three things were certain afterward: Sen returned, Dalton had become his accomplice, and they forced the local guild to declare them an official adventurer company.”“Is Dalton—”“He doesn’t control the dragon as far as I can tell, but my apprentice, whom I sent to investigate, told me he accessed a Monster Class called [Monster
Chapter 52
“You call that a castle?” Sen complained as he bathed in the lava around his new lair, “I demand at least seven towers! Work harder!”“Yes, Emperor Sen!” the kobolds shouted back, while Sen briefly closed his eyes in satisfaction at the name. The minions had built a large bridge to carry raw material from the mountain to the castle, rebuilding the towers the dragon had destroyed during the War of the Hoard. The hyena-like humanoid called gnolls carried most of the black stones making up the castle, the males doing most of the work under the supervision of their females. Sen found their spotted fur and their clothes funny to look at.As it turned out, the encampments south belonged to gnoll tribes who lived in fear of the dread Furibon, who allowed them to live and keep their gold so long as they obeyed him. Most had fled the region when Sen warred against the lich, but the few who didn’t came to Murmurin looking for work. After condemning them for knowingly serving that cruel undead,

Yes, that was indeed the word he used. Buying. Even thinking of it made Sen sick. “So I must destroy more Furibons to earn a Crest,” he said, refusing to entertain the other possibilities.“Your Majesty may also contact the fomors if they are desperate,” Jules said. “The fomor Mag Mell created artificial items called Dark Crests, which break the level ceiling, but come with dangerous side-effects.”The fomors? Those upstart fairies who pretended they had created the world when obviously dragons did it first? Sen despised them as much as he did the lich. “Could a quest with a princess yield a Crest?”“I’m afraid I cannot say. Crests are generated by the system without warning.”“Minion Kyle, we will try to fetch a Crest while hunting princesses.”“Princesses?” Manling Kyle picked up. “With an s?”“I need three princesses now,” Sen confirmed with a serious tone.“What?” Manling Kyle once again proved terrible at math. “Three princesses? Why?”“Because my hated rival Vren has caught twin

Jules said nothing, with Manling Kyle putting a hand on his back and shaking his head. “Still, Your Majesty,” the chief of staff said. “We don’t have the means to feed our own minion population, let alone so many dragons.”“Minions, you fail to notice the perfectly good rations building my castle,” Sen said, eying the gnolls and the werewolves. Only the kobolds, he couldn’t bear to sacrifice and would have to hide from his kindred. “Also, that way, it means less mouths to feed.”“I would rather not,” Manling Kyle said.“Then summon fiends. They are plentiful if rancid and bitter.”“At this rate, I think we will depopulate Hell faster than Heaven ever did. Your Majesty, we need more resources, more food, than we can provide right now. I’m using everything we have, even having Jules scour the countryside to revive decades old corpses as undead labor, and two moons is still too short a time window.”“Well, Kyle, since you use seawater greenhousing, you must accumulate a lot of salt, do y

“Hi, Charlene.” Kyle waved at the poor office manager, as he rode through the town square while on top of his new mount, the Black Beast of Murmurin. “What’s up?”The guild manager glared back at him. Her ‘office’ was composed of a board, a desk, and a chair in the middle of the town’s square, gnolls and kobolds often checking the few requests available.Murmurin had grown thrice-fold since the ‘War of the Hoard’, with minions building more houses or tents to accommodate newcomers. A giant stone statue of Sen stood in the middle of the town, with Sen Junior buried underground right next to it, ready to ambush anyone trying to pull the false sword. They had been forced to equip the locals with axes and spears, or otherwise, Junior became jealous and tried to eliminate the competition. Even Kyle's rapier had suffered his envious wrath.Since he reaped most benefits by wielding a scythe, Kyle gave Red Ranger the musket which he stole from Vilmain. The raptor had proven himself an incredi

“Hey, Kyle!” Savoureuse waved at him. “How are you? I hope work isn’t stressful.”“Not as stressful as getting kidnapped by a lich while you watched,” Kyle replied with heavy sarcasm.“Yes, but my life was in danger,” Savoureuse said. “I could not help.”Yeah, right. Why was he friends with her again? For the food, he decided. And maybe the Crests, if she could smuggle one as he asked her to. If only Furibon had left one behind, but he had sent all of those found in the region to Brandon Maure to empowering his soldiers. His eyes settled on the newcomer. “And who might you be?”“Remember the woman I told you about?” Savoureuse asked, slightly embarrassed. “This is her.”“My name is Lucie Lavere, of the Royal University of Gardemagne,” the newcomer said with a formal, professional posture. “I heard a lot about you and your master, Lord Kyle.”“Oh? From whom?” According to Savoureuse, this woman belonged to the Nightblades, and so she was bad news.“Many, but especially my new friend He

The fact it came from a goddamn demon made it all the more shameful.“Which is to say, Hell needs people like you.” The demon’s tone turned admirative, much to Kyle's confusion. “People who care about the bottom line. About profit. Mortals who are ready to sully their hand for their greater good.”“Wait, you’re not mad?”“Please, Lord Kyle, call me Malfy,” the demon replied with a charming voice. “No, I am not mad. In fact, I misjudged you. I feared that you were cunning demon hunters, but you have the trappings of a good business partner. Let’s make a deal.”“So I can keep summoning demons for more food?” Chocolatine asked, hopeful.“Not in the temple!” Allison chided her. “And no!”“But we have more carnivores than meat! We cannot sustain our ecological niche without sacrifices!”Her argument surprised Kyle, who found it rather well-thought out. Not that the demon cared. “I will reroute the summoning channel to send you victims of corporate downsizing and violent layoffs. By having

Sen forced himself not to fall asleep out of boredom in the middle of the flight. He was sick of this endless desert, carrying his chief of staff in one hand, and a big, goatskin bag for princesses in the other. “Why am I flying invisible again?” the dragon asked his minion, who had insisted Sen use his ‘Blinkblink’ ring. “And why didn't we bring the other minions?”“Because otherwise Brandon Maure will have us shot on sight, and my [Cowl of the Reaper] grants me some camouflage.” The minion sounded tired, and just as bored as his master. “It’s better to travel light.”“Minion, I meant why I should care if that fiend notices?”“Because we are on a princess rescue mission, which means we need to be discreet. Otherwise, Maure will evacuate them elsewhere, and we may not know where this time.”At long last, Sen finally noticed their destination when he squinted his eyes at the horizon.A rock the size of the Valen mountains’ tallest peak floated above the desert, a fortress-city built fr

“[Spell Purge]!” Sen snarled, revealing himself in his full draconic glory as his Perk negated his ring’s invisibility. “Fear my wrath, manling knight! You face Emperor Sen Krendrath, First of his name, Great Calamity of this Age, Emperor of Murmurin and the Valen Mountains, and Slayer of Furibon!”“I know about the lich,” the knight said, raising her blade. “I would say thanks since we never got around to killing him before, but—”“You knew about Furibon?” Sen glared at the knight, suddenly outraged. “And you did nothing? Do you know what he was doing in that dungeon? Do you know?”The knight paused, halting her descent. “Excuse me?”“I am sure he must have sacrificed hundreds of baby princesses to prepare that dread, foul, evil spell! He was about to release it on the world before I stopped him! Do you know what he made me suffer through? The bloody war I had to fight? The sacrifices I had to make? Do you know?”“Uh, no, I—”“You would, if you were cultured enough to read The War of

Sen squinted at the griffon, who glared back at him. “I am listening,” he said, in case that knight could be helpful in carrying his princesses to Murmurin.“First, I have to ask, do you intend to fight Maure yourselves? Because I can’t support it.”“Why? Because it would be dangerous?” Minion Kyle asked.“What? No, it would be amazing, and I insist on coming along.” The manling sounded positively giddy. “I’ve been trying to convince my party for months to kick that foppish demon bastard’s ass, and they always delay. Same with the lich. If we had known he worked a foul magic which threatened the world...”“Your feeble mind cannot imagine the depth of Furibon’s depravity,” Sen said grimly. “He was pure evil, the kind that existed for itself. He was unliving lead.”“For a dragon to say that… I’m not going to ask for the gory details. Is that his soul in the scythe?” The knight looked up at the Manling Kyle's weapon, "I see... you took that cursed Reaper class because it was the only way
