Chapter 11
Noah’s words made my heart skip a beat. I froze with the damp cotton still in my hand, halfway into the trashcan. The extremely quiet house added more weight to his question.I turned slowly and looked at him. He hadn’t opened his eyes yet, but his face was turned toward me, waiting for an answer. The bright glow of the lamp made the purple and yellow bruise marks on his cheeks darker. His lip was cut with scabs and he looked smaller as he crouched on the couch with his knees tucked under the blanket I gave him.I put the cotton on the tray and sat on the edge of the coffee table. I stayed close enough to offer him help, but also kept a distance to give him personal space.I leaned forward and the sore pain from the stitch in my shoulder throbbed, like it was reminding me to choose my next words carefully."No," I said. My voice sounded scratchy, like I hadn't spoken in a long time. "I’m not working for them.”When he opened his eyes, they were red and bloodshot. But they were still

It buzzed again, and I muted it before the sound could wake Noah. I clicked the icon, and the text appeared before me.‘Good job, Ghost. It was good to have you back.—Van’I stared at the message, my thumb hovering above the keyboard. I wanted to respond, but there was nothing to say. As if Van could feel it, he sent a follow up message.‘Yes, I know you don’t want to be back here, but imagine the possibilities you could have.’Now he was trying to sell his plan to me, I pressed on the keyboard.‘I thought I made it clear last time. I’m done with this bullshit you want. Understand that. And if that’s not fine, then be expecting me at your little spot, not in the best way.’I sent the message, not expecting a reply. Then Van sent an image with the text:‘You might want to see this.’I opened the file, and what met my eyes didn’t come as a surprise. I had sensed something wrong from the beginning. The image was my house. Not a satellite view or an old picture of the apartment, but a c
Chapter 13
“Brother, can I ask you something?”Noah’s voice was calm, but I knew him too well, his questions always carried weight.“Of course,” I said, shifting my stance so the gun at my waist wasn’t the first thing his eyes landed on.He leaned his elbows on the railing and looked out at the street. The environment was still quiet, with only the occasional chirping of birds.“Are we… safe now? I know you did it to protect me, but does that guarantee they won't come for us again?” he asked. What he said really got to me.I stayed quiet for a second. I walked over to him and looked out at the street, but everything looked fine, totally normal, and that’s what worried me."No," I finally told him.He looked at me, not with surprise, but with tiredness.“I knew you’d say that,” he said quietly.I ran my hand through my hair and sighed. I wasn’t ready for this conversation yet. I wanted to wait and find a nice way to say it, but there was no easy way to tell him his life was already falling apart.

Then the doors swung open and nine men stepped onto the pavement. The men were dressed in sleek black suits and wore thick shades. These were professional killers, the type you see when someone paid a huge amount of money to make sure you disappeared.I could tell from the earplugs and the SMGs that they held at their torsos. Then another man stepped out of the third van, making him the tenth. His dressing was completely odd compared to the rest. He put on a grey shirt but still had shades and an earpiece like the others. He walked in front of the group and raised his hand, and at that signal, the others moved.Six men moved to the sides of the house in groups of three, and the others approached the entrance. They wanted to keep us surrounded.“Get down,” I whispered, pushing Noah behind the couch. I pulled out my Glock and handed him a sheathed dagger, but he hesitated on it.“Take it, you never can tell when you will need it,” I said.He stared at me for a while, still hesitating.
Chapter 15
The impact from the bullets made me fall to my knees, it hadn't hit a Vital spot, but I was losing blood, I ignored the pain before it slowed me down and pushed myself to my feet, I stayed steady for a few seconds then moved quickly to the side and bullets pierced through the spot I had been. That confirmed it, they were using thermal glasses to track me and I had to adapt quickly.I rolled and came to a stop beside the kitchen counter. I turned on the gas and let it flow, then moved away and crouched by the corner with a lighter in my hand. From the corner of my eye, I spotted the man advancing toward me.He didn't open fire, maybe he thought I was finished, that I had bled out and was ready to give up.When he was close enough, I pressed the lighter and threw it at him.The room was in flames for a second, the man fired at the spot where I had been, then shot at another random spot, the flames had disrupted his thermal lenses.I leaned out and put two bullets into his head, and he d

We stayed in that posture for a moment, his gun pressed against my skull and mine on his neck.In such a tense situation, his breathing was steady, and he didn’t have the eyes of someone who was afraid. This guy wasn’t like the others I put down earlier,he was well composed, that explained the odd grey shirt. But the same couldn't be said for me, I was bleeding profusely. The cloth I had used to slow down the bleeding had shifted after the man attacked. But I was still breathing, and pain didn’t matter as long as I found a way to stay alive.“Seems like you’re losing composure, Ghost,” he said. But I wasn’t, I managed to keep myself steady and ignore the stinging pain from the wound dripping blood down my chest. His eyes darted to my chest, the spot where I had been hit.“I hope you don’t bleed dry before we’re done here.”I tightened my grip on the gun.“Move,” I commanded, but he didn’t obey.Instead, he smiled faintly, like he had already decided how this would end.“You only aim

The explosion went off behind me and the force of the blast threw me forward.I landed on the ground with my stomach first and the impact made me cough up blood, for a second the whole world went silent and the only thing I could hear was ringing in my ears.I ignored the sharp stabbing pain in my ribs, and rolled over, then pushed myself up to my knees. When I tried to stand, my legs shook so hard I almost fell, but I managed to steady myself.I quickly looked around in search of someone. Noah, but he was gone.Smoke rose from the window, and debris fell scattering everywhere. I squinted through the mess to keep my eyes open, but my vision was blurry. I decided to search for Noah, but when I tried walking, I had to limp, my right leg was numb and aching badly, but I kept moving. I pressed my back against the wall and stayed low, then I looked towards the parking lot.To my surprise, the vans were still together, which meant the other hitmen were still around. And they could be any

The road curved sharply ahead of me and I was driving way too fast. When I jerked the steering wheel to stay on the pavement, the van swerved violently. And the tires screeched so loud like they would burst, but I fought the wheel, forcing it straight, and the effort cost me. A sharp, hot pain shot through my right leg. My foot slipped off the gas pedal for a split second, but I gritted my teeth and slammed it back down.My breath was coming out in rough, jagged gasps. The streetlights passed the windshield in a white blur and every time I blinked, the light seemed to be getting closer. It wasn't hard to see the road, but at the speed I was going a small mistake would be disastrous. I wiped my face with the back of my hand, but something warm and wet slid across my face. I pulled my hand away and it was covered in dark red blood. My grip on the steering wheel tightened. My fingers felt stiff and heavy, almost like they weren't part of my body anymore.I glanced at the rearview mirro

I took off my shirt, and Noah kneeled in front of me. He opened the silver first aid box and took out the bandages, gauze, and antiseptic bottles, placing them on the dirty floor. He moved too quickly and grabbed some cotton. Without thinking, he poured a lot of hydrogen peroxide straight onto the cotton pad. Then he pressed it onto the torn skin on my chest.I hissed in pain and squeezed my teeth together. It burned instantly, feeling like someone had poured liquid fire into my wound."Easy, Noah," I managed to say. "You're going to burn me alive at this rate."He stopped immediately and looked up at me with innocent, sorry eyes. "Sorry. I thought using more would be better, right?"I laughed through the pain, but it turned into a cough. "Yes, it works, but not when it's burning me alive. Here, give it to me." I reached out my hand.He hesitated, his eyes full of pity. Then he handed me the soaked cotton pad. I took it carefully and dabbed it lightly around the edges first, letting t

I finished strapping on the bulletproof vest and exhaled slowly. The weight pressed against my ribs, right on the injury, but I pushed the feeling aside. Pain was easier to deal with than fear.Noah was still standing by the workbench. He stared at the rifle in his hands like it would bite him."Put it down for now," I said. "You don't need to use that yet."He waited a second, then carefully placed the gun back in its case and clicked the locks shut. The sound felt too loud in the quiet room. We stood there without speaking, and the only noise was the low humming of the computers. It felt unusually quiet, like the calm before a storm.I limped slowly toward the control desk. Halfway there, my eyes went blurry for a moment, so I stopped and put my hand on the edge of the table to steady myself."Are you okay?" Noah asked."I'm okay," I replied quickly. He shrugged. I knew he didn’t believe me, but he didn’t argue.I pressed a few buttons, and one of the screens showed the live feed fr
