Chapter 1
“Help”
That was the only content of the text I saw when my phone buzzed on the pillow next to my head. And it was from Noah.
Adrenaline instantly rushed through my blood stream and I hit the call button but it rang and went straight to voicemail.
“Yo, it’s Noah, do your thing after the beep.”
“Noah, pick up.” I was already yanking yesterday’s jeans off the floor. “Pick up, man.”
I ran bare footed on the cold hardwood heading straight for the entrance. I pushed the front door open and banged it shut behind me turning the key in a frenzy and headed straight for my car.
Reversing, I rode into the road and into the empty street praying in my heart that nothing had happened to the boy. He lived just a street away so it didn't take me long to get to his house. I flung the door open and broke into a run, headed for the house.
“Noah!” I yelled across the quiet lawns. “Noah, are you home?”
I took the front steps two at a time and pushed the slightly opened door the rest of the way. The living room was a total mess. The couch was flipped, the lamp was on the floor and one of the big framed photos of us at the lake was hanging by a thread, glass and the cracks giving off the vibe of a spider web.
“Noah, answer me! Are you there?”
But all I heard in the silence was the echo of my voice and my breathing. I stepped over a cushion and that was when I saw the blood on the wall. A handprint slid down, fingers splayed like he was trying to hold himself up. Was that Noah’s?
“Noah…” I called but this time, I sounded like a whimpering kid.
I walked farther in and got to the dining table which was shoved sideways. One chair snapped clean in half but in the middle of the table, propped against the napkin holder was a white index card that read- “You can't hide forever.”
“No.” I heard myself saying. “No, no, no…”
I threw the card like it burned me and it fell into the floor. How dare they? Rage boiled in my chest and my foot went straight through the wall. Pain exploded up my leg but I kicked again and again until dust poured down my jeans.
“You motherfuckers!” I yelled at the empty house. “You better not hurt him, he has nothing to do with you.”
I stood there panting and my foot was bleeding inside my sock. I don’t know how long I stood like that but finally, I mustered strength and walked into the cold evening and back to my car.
Mrs. Henderson was out by her roses in that pink robe and yapping to her little dong when I pulled over.
“Ethan? Honey, you okay?” She asked over the fence the moment she saw me. “You’re bleeding…”
Without as much as acknowledging her, I walked straight ahead and slammed my own door so hard as if to shut her noise out. Inside was pitch black but I didn't bother to turn on the light. I went straight to the fridge, yanked a beer, twisted the cap off with my shirt and took three long pulls. Feeling my throat burning came with a little sense of comfort.
I hurled the bottle into the sink and it shattered loud enough if someone was at my door he would hear.
Walking fast down the hall, I shoved open the library door and hit the stereo power button so hard. Noah’s old playlist started screaming in the house. For some reason I loved the kind of music he listened to and now, some rock guy was roaring about burning it all down.
Perfect! I stood in front of the back bookshelf breathing like I’d run ten miles, grabbed the fake Volume M and yanked it and the whole shelf swung inward.
And for the first time in eight years, I came face to face with the one of the things I had buried at the back of my mind. I went to the garage, grabbed the claw hammer off the wall and came back swinging it even before I even crossed the threshold.
I hit the wood and took a large chunk of the wood off. I kept going, grunting with every swing.
“Come on, come on fucking open!” I yelled and the wood cracked up as if it had actually heard me. I dropped the hammer and kicked the rest of the way through. The panel folded in half and I crawled over it, splinters digging into my palms but I didn't care.
I stood up in the dark and slapped the light switch and one bare bulb blinked on.
Apart from the dust that had settled, everything looked the same. I stain on the coffee table was still there although the table had rusted a little. I knelt, knees cracking, and shook the floor board until I found was I was looking for. Pulling it up, I blew the dust off and punched in the numbers that I knew by heart.
1-9-3-4-0-7 I typed and the handle dropped with a loud sound. Pulling the door open, I took a deep breath and looked at it. The Glock 19 was on top exactly where I had left it. I lifted it out and sniffed the tip.
“I’m sorry, Noah. I’m so fucking sorry.” I spoke to the silence silently hoping that he understood that this was for him. I checked the chamber and picked a mag. The snap sounded exactly the same as it did when we were twenty-five and stupid and thought we were invincible. I grabbed the shoulder rig off the hook, shrugged it on and set the Glock. I took two spare mags and clipped them opposite the holster. And then the AR.
I just stood there, rifle hanging across my chest and tears dripping off my chin onto the concrete.
“Hang in there, Noah. I’m coming for you.” I whispered to the empty room and to my brother who wasn’t there.

The Rise Of The Forgotten King. Chapter 46
“They aren't trying to blow the tires,” Yuri noticed, looking at the sparks flying off our rear bumper in the mirror.“They want us alive,” I said. “Either that, or they’re trying to herd us like cattle toward a specific spot.”Suddenly, two bikes sped up and pinned us right between them. I saw the riders lean in close to our truck. With a quick motion, they slapped two small, glowing devices onto our doors.Beep. Beep. Beep.“Bombs!” Yuri yelled, his voice echoing in the small cabin.“I know,” I replied.I hit the gas for a second to trick them into speeding up then I slammed on the brakes as hard as I could. The sudden stop sent the bikers flying forward. One rider wobbled, and the bomb on his side scraped against the tunnel wall. It tore loose and exploded against the concrete without hurting us. The other riders slowed down, hanging back and waiting for our truck to blow up.Instead, I put the truck into reverse.I didn't just back up, I raced backward. We rammed straight toward t

The Rise Of The Forgotten King. Chapter 45
This wasn’t just about getting away anymore. This had turned into a high speed hunt, and I was done being the one running blind. I was done being the prey.I gripped the steering wheel as I floored it so hard my hands ached. The engine didn't just make noise, it screamed, a sound that bounced off the concrete walls and vibrated straight into my chest. The flashing tunnel lights became blurry yellow streaks as we shot past them. For eight long years, I had tried my best to kill the man I used to be. I changed my name, I changed my face, and I even altered the way I spoke so that no one could identify my accent. It was all a mask, a giant lie I told myself so I could be normal for my little brother. I wanted to prove that a killer could walk away from that life and start over again, clean. But destiny doesn't care about your careful plans. It just waits for the perfect, terrible moment to strike. Now, the Ghost was back. I wasn't just a memory or a legend anymore, I was a man behind t

The Rise Of The Forgotten King. CHAPTER 44
The building shook again. This time, the blast was much closer and way more powerful. Through the camera feed, I watched the outer gate rip off from the wall completely. The metal groaned and concrete shattered everywhere. Then the shockwave hit the room like a physical punch, and the lights flickered, barely staying on. This was a different mode of approach compared to the others that were raided.“It’s like they know we’re here,” Yuri said. His voice was thin and shaky as he started to panic again.“They do,” I said, already moving. “And they aren't here to talk.”Another loud boom echoed through the walls. Dust fell from the ceiling like rain, and the steel beams above us began to creak under the pressure.“Move. Now!”I didn’t wait for him. I sprinted toward the back of the room, his footsteps sounded closely behind me. The calm feeling from before was gone. Now, it was replaced with an immediate urgency to get out unseen from the facility. I tapped a code into my watch, lettin

The Rise Of The Forgotten King. Chapter 43
He was armed now efficiently and professionally.Yuri was a different man now.The way he carried himself had changed. He wasn't the panicked father I’d seen with blood stains on the road or the cocky assassin I’d tied to a chair. He was focused. He moved with quiet, mechanical precision, a quality that only comes from years of training. His compact assault rifle was pulled tight against his chest, adjusted so it wouldn't snag on his gear. His suppressed pistol was locked against his thigh, positioned exactly where his hand would fall naturally. He had his extra magazines lined up perfectly at his waist. Even the combat knives on his forearm were angled just right for a quick draw.Loading up wasn't about looking tough or scary and it was clear he understood the rules of battle that would keep you breathing, balance and speed.I gave him a single, short nod. It was the only sign of respect he needed. We weren't friends, but at this moment, we were a team.I pulled on my own tactica

The Rise Of The Forgotten King. Chapter 42
The road beneath us was nothing more than a blur of gray and black.I wasn’t just driving, I was pushing the SUV past every limit it had, and every rule I had ever lived by. The engine screamed, it was a high pitched mechanical wail that sounded like an animal being dragged into a fight it didn’t want. The vibration traveled up the steering wheel and into my bones, rattling my teeth so hard my jaw vibrated. But I didn’t let up. I couldn't afford to.Outside, the world was vanishing. The industrial buildings of the city outskirts thinned out, replaced by long, lonely stretches of empty asphalt and broken streetlights. The city faded in the rearview mirror until the orange glow of its life was nothing but a memory. It was that strange, heavy hour of the night, when the air feels thick and the world seems to hold its breath.Beside me, Yuri had turned his body facing me. I didn't have to look to feel his stare. It was heavy, pressing against the side of my face like a physical weight.

The Rise Of The Forgotten King. Chapter 41
I sat in the driver’s seat, my hands gripped the steering wheel so tight veins shone from my knuckles. In my mind was a mess of numbers and maps, calculating every second we had left. The first lair was only five minutes away, after taking a few turns through the city we arrived. On the outside, it appeared to be a pathetic, forgotten maintenance tunnel. I had spent a fortune and years of my life disguising it as a boring storage facility. It was hidden behind rusted chain link fences and fake "Danger High Voltage" signs, making it the kind of place people look at once and then forget forever.I hadn’t been back here in a couple of years. The time I spent trying not be Ghost. But just being near it made my skin crawl. In my world, the places you abandon don’t stay empty, they grow wild, then they wait for you to come back just so they can become your grave.I put off the headlights a full block away and we rolled into the tunnel slowly like a phantom. But when the gate finally cam
