CHAPTER 31
Aeris’s POVI wasted no time grabbing the keys to my truck as I hurriedly bolted out of the room, my mind already conjuring several possible things that could’ve gone wrong. We couldn’t afford to have setbacks, not right now. A figure nestled against the wall in a corner caught my eye as I got closer to the door of the sanctum.I stared at it, squinting slightly, “Who’s there?”Whoever it was seemed to move, tucking both hands into invisible pockets as they walked towards the light. “Relax, it’s just me.”I relaxed slightly. It was Wilder, “What are you doing out here?” My eyes glanced briefly at my wristwatch. Charis had asked to meet downtown. It was a ten minute drive from here without traffic on the freeway, I had no time to waste, but still, I couldn’t dismiss the boy that easily.“I needed some air,” he said, his eyes darting in every corner, “needed to get away from the others for a minute.”With two strides in his direction, I closed the gap between us. “You okay?”He looked u
CHAPTER 32
Author’s POVThe café was bustling with the usual crowd, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and pastries filled the air. Aeris paused at the door to scan the room, his eyes searching for a familiar face amidst the sea of strangers. It took a minute, but he finally spotted her. Charis. She was dressed in a crisp white blouse and a tailored blazer that seemed to scream academic without being too obvious. Her dark hair was pulled back into a neat bun, and a pair of round rimmed reading glasses perched on the bridge of her nose. She was sitting at a small table near the window, her eyes fixed on something outside the window, her expression unreadable. Her thin fingers moved to adjust her glasses, then popped back into place.Underneath the table and away from his eyes, her fingers fidgeted nervously; her mind had wandered far away from where she was currently seated. As he walked closer, he noticed she was tense, her shoulders were slightly hunched and her eyes darted towards him befo
CHAPTER 33
Author’s POVHe sat there, almost motionless as he took in their current predicament, his mind weighing the possibility of them making it out alive.“Aeris?”He raised his eyes to meet hers, snapping out of his head, “Sorry, what?”She sighed, reaching out a hand to caress him, “Are you okay?”He paused for a moment to consider the question. Lately, he had been getting worse, it would be a miracle if he lived long enough to see the end of this. With a small smile, he held her gaze, “I’m alright, it’s the kids I’m worried about.”In truth, he was more than worried about them. But right now, he simply wanted to deflect the attention to something else, something more important.“What about them seems to be bothering you?”Before he could answer, the barista who had taken Charis’s order a lifetime ago returned, the gum no longer in her mouth. She placed the drink on the table, then turned to leave once again. When they were finally alone again, he answered, “A lot is going on; I’m worried
CHAPTER 34
Author’s POVThe realization crept up on him like a chill on a cold winter night. One moment, he was lost in thought, navigating the familiar streets with ease, and the next, he was well aware of the car behind him.At first, he thought it was just paranoia, a side effect of the meeting with Charis and the nature of their conversation. But surely, Grimfall hadn’t learnt to drive just yet, so it couldn’t possibly be.But as the car continued to follow him, its headlights casting an unmistakable glow on the road ahead, he knew he wasn't imagining things. His instincts kicked in, and he focused on the road, his mind raced with a million possible people who could do this, but nothing seemed to stick. He knew these streets like the back of his hand, and he was determined to lose the tail.He took a sharp turn, the tires screeching in protest, and accelerated down the narrow side street. The car behind him hesitated for a moment before following, its headlights illuminating the dark alleywa
CHAPTER 35
Author’s POVAeris stood tall at the center of the room, his imposing figure towering above all five kids that stood in a cluster before him.The room buzzed with the low rumble of inaudible chatter, each one of them paired up and murmured amongst themselves. He cleared his throat, the sound echoing off the walls as their attention turned towards him."Alright, listen up," he said, his deep voice calm. "Today's training is going to be a bit different. We're heading outdoors."They all exchanged skeptical glances, but anyone could see the spark of excitement in their eyes. Having spent well over a week inside here, it was hard to blame them for wanting some sunlight and natural air."Where are we going?" Kaladin asked, clutching a small ping pong ball between his fingers."A field nearby," Aeris replied, his expression serious. "It's a safe distance from any populated areas, and we'll be able to train without any interruptions."Kaladin nodded, seemingly satisfied with the response he
CHAPTER 36
Author’s POVThe sun beat down on the field, casting a warm glow over them as they all stood aside, waiting for Aeris to call the next person up.When Zayan finally stopped panting and rejoined the others, Aeris moved over to the trunk of his car and pulled out paper figures, setting them up in front of them.He paused to catch his breath, his hands snaking around his sides as he addressed them, “Eilish, you’re up next.”Her eyes widened in surprise as she moved forward, a wave of uncertainty washing over her. She walked over, her head tilted slightly to the side, her eyes fixed on the paper figures in front of her as she tried to figure out what this was about.Rune, sensing her nervousness, stepped forward and offered her a reassuring smile. “Hey,” he called out, “you're gonna do great," his voice was soft and calming. "Just focus on the target, and let your powers flow."Eilish nodded, her eyes darting to Aeris, who stood watching her with a serious expression. "Okay," she said, he
CHAPTER 37
Author’s POVKaladin was the next person called up. As he took cautious steps towards Aeris, Wilder shuffled closer. An all too familiar sense of unease washed over him. Something was wrong, but he just had no idea what, at least for now.He looked around, trying to see if there was anything unusual or out of the ordinary. But everything around them seemed fine, perfect even.“Your task is to hold this up, alongside this rock and not crush either of them.” Aeris pulled out an egg as he spoke, cradling it delicately in his open palm before handing it to Kaladin, who swallowed hard at the unexpected challenge.“Are you for real?” The boy asked, holding the egg up and staring at it as if it would magically transform into something else if he looked hard enough.Aeris nodded, “I am.” When he noticed the boy’s hesitance, he continued, “this exercise is going to help teach you how to handle delicate things. If you can successfully press down lightly without using excessive force and crushin
CHAPTER 38
Author’s POVAeris felt like the air had been knocked right out of his lungs. He stared at the man before him, watching as the black shadows that snaked around him seemed to have a mind of their own.He looked around, doing a headcount of the kids to ensure everyone was still accounted for, “Everyone, get behind me.” When he noticed their hesitation, he yelled, “Now!”They shuffled towards him quickly, letting him act as a human shield between them and the stranger who seemed familiar to Aeris.Wilder stood shivering, his trembling hands pressed against his ears as beads of sweat fell from him, hitting his groin in quick succession.“Please, make it stop!” He yelled, wincing lightly on the floor.Aeris let his gaze shift between his brother and the kid wriggling in pain at his feet. As cautiously as he could, he lowered himself, holding the boy steady, his eyes almost never leaving Tiago.“Stay with me now, Wilder. Stay grounded, don’t let those damn voices mess with your head.”As a
CHAPTER 39
Author’s POVRune's anger boiled over as he tossed the crate aside. "I'm done with this," he spat, his eyes blazing with a fury he did nothing to mask. "You lied to us, and now you think we’re just going to stand here and let you get away with it?"The other kids stood frozen, unsure of what to do. Kaladin's massive frame seemed to tremble with rage, while Eilish looked like she was on the verge of tears. For the first time, Zayan was quiet, kneeling down as he comforted Wilder. But before anyone could respond, Tiago had begun closing in on them. “Play time is over. No one's going anywhere," he said, his voice a kind of low that sent shivers down the spine of anyone who heard him speak.Rune sneered, his anger and frustration boiling over. "Get out of the way. We don't have time for this."Tiago didn't move. Instead, he raised his hand, and a blast of dark energy shot towards the boy.He leaped aside, the blast missing him by a few inches.Everyone gasped, clustering together as they
CHAPTER 40
Author’s POVThe group collapsed to the ground in rapid succession, their breathing ragged and labored as they struggled to recover from the intense battle that had just ensued.Wilder gasped just then, his hands finally away from his ears as he sat upright, beads of sweat lining his forehead. His eyes were bloodshot as he looked around, almost breathless.“It’s alright,” Eilish muttered, “He’s gone now.”Wilder nodded slowly, his fear still obvious as he lowered his head, letting her hold him as he cried.“I saw it, I saw what it wants to do to everyone.” He looked around, noting the shocked expressions that stared back at him and continued, “Everyone dies. If we don’t stop him, everyone dies.”Rune was the first to answer, he gave a light shrug. "I'm out of here," he said, his voice low as he struggled to his feet, “this isn’t my fight anymore.”Wilder’s face crumpled in confusion, “What do you mean? You’re all going to let that affect the choice we all made to protect the world? Ou
