CHAPTER 41
Author’s POVRune pushed the doors open wide, letting it slam shut behind him as he made his way into the sanctum, a place he had grown to call home in the last two weeks. He made his way into his room, desperately needing the privacy within those walls. When he collapsed on the bed, his hands covered his face, his mind racing with thoughts.Aeris had lied to them for so long, it hurt, really did. Especially because he had trusted the man, looked up to him with admiration even.Tiago had said a lot, most of which was exaggerated, but the truth was still. He wondered why Aeris hadn’t let it slip once, throughout the two weeks they had spent here, laying their lives at his feet every day.A faint knock on the door interrupted his thoughts as he looked up, “Yeah?” He asked, pausing to listen.“It’s me.” Eilish’s soft voice floated in from the other side of the door. His heart loosened slightly.“Come on in.”The knob turned lightly before the door creaked open, her head popping in first,
CHAPTER 42
Author’s POVThe sanctum felt empty, almost as if it echoed when you spoke. Eilish had gone back home. They had shared a little hug before that, with both of them promising to keep in touch.Zayan had left without a word, visibly enraged by a number of things he refused to share. Kaladin, on the other hand, had gone to pursue any leads he could find. The boy wanted so desperately to clear the lingering doubts about his parents’ innocence.Deep down, he knew Aeris was right. A lot of things his parents had been doing and how sneaky they were about their job description never made sense to him.But as any good child would, he hoped it was all just a bunch of coincidences. He had said his goodbyes with the group before leaving.Wilder had stayed, true to his words. He had stayed in his room through the goodbyes, choosing to keep to himself for now.Rune tossed and turned in his room, suddenly at a loss of what to do with his time now that his usual routine had been interrupted. He was s
CHAPTER 43
Aeris’s POVThe pain in my chest forced me to wince slightly as I gasped for air. I was seated on the ground with my back against a wooden crate, my body slick with sweat, and my heart racing as I had just run four miles.I struggled to sit up, a searing pain shooting through my side, and I grunted, falling back on the crate. It creaked noisily from the extra weight.Tiago was beside me, his breathing haggard as he sighed, “You good over there?”Not wanting him to worry about me, as we already had a lot on our plates at the moment, I lied. “Yeah, I guess. I’m hit, but it’s nothing too serious.”He nodded, his eyes darting back towards the entrance, the same thought occupying both our minds. That thing could breeze in here at any moment.“You think it’s still out there?” I asked, the tension in the small warehouse palpable.Tiago shrugged, his eyes still fixed on the door expectantly, “It is, that thing wouldn’t leave until it’s sure we’re dead.”He wasn’t wrong, “I guess we’d just wai
CHAPTER 44
Eilish’s POVThe midday sun shone bright in the sky as I walked down the busy but familiar streets. It had been a while since I last walked these paths.I let my eyes wander about, taking note of every change that had been made in my absence. My eyes caught a small coffee shop I hadn’t seen before, its bright sign a little too hard to miss in a corner.I approached it, pulling the glass doors open as I made my way inside. It was small, and the smell of fresh paint still lingered in the air. I couldn’t exactly remember what had occupied this space before now, but it sure as hell wasn’t significant enough to be missed. The small space seemed a little too busy, with everyone moving back and forth, trying to get something done.I watched them briefly, a small sigh escaping my lips. Deciding to open a new cafe when the world was ending wasn’t exactly a smart choice. They had no idea the world was ending soon, and for a moment, I admired their ignorance. It had been two whole days since I l
CHAPTER 45
Aeris’s POVThe training room sat empty as I walked in, making my way towards the center as the boys trailed behind me.Rune was the last person I had expected to stay behind, but he had. I had no idea what his reasons were; I was simply happy he had chosen to stay, despite everything.I had my back to them as I tried to set up the arena for the day’s training when I felt someone behind me.I turned, startled for an instant as I came face to face with Rune.“Hey..” he began, hesitantly, “so I got this for you.” He added, stretching a wooden staff towards me.I reached for it, my brows furrowed in confusion. Noticing my demeanor, he explained, “It’s just an old stick I picked up and decided to carve up.”He shrugged, barely holding my gaze as he continued, “You’re up and about mostly, and I notice you struggle to stay on your feet a lot of times. This should help balance out your weight, I guess.”I let my fingers wrap around the clean surface of the wood, feeling the sting of an unshe
CHAPTER 46
Author’s POVThe past couple of days since his return had been slow, nothing unexpected. Kaladin stood by the window, the curtains drawn aside as he peered through, focused on his father, who was pacing outside, phone pressed against his ears.He paced, hands flying in the air as he yelled. Kaladin watched the man, a small sigh escaping his lips at the sight.A lot of things that had seemed irrelevant before he went to the sanctum seemed to make sense to him now, like how his parents always stepped outside to take certain phone calls, or how they shut the doors behind them securely when having discussions. He had on more than one occasion witnessed this, long before now. A more recent example happened about a week before he met Aeris.A long-time friend and colleague of his father had visited, and now, as he sat to really think about it, the man had seemed uneasy in a way.He had held a briefcase securely in his hand, his tie hanging loose from his neck and his hair disheveled, as if
CHAPTER 47
Author’s POV The streets seemed almost empty as Zayan walked through, his hands tucked into his dark hoodie, head bowed.A streetlight flickered annoyingly above him, illuminating and darkening the street at will. Inside his pocket, his hands still raised, circled a bar of chocolate. He’d barely eaten all day and was hoping he could work and get a couple of bucks to eat something soon. The bar of chocolate in his pocket was all he had left at the moment. He looked around, scanning his surroundings briefly as he paused in front of the warehouse he had worked in for the last year. The big brown sign at the entrance read “Winston's Warehouse,” and the light above it was a faint neon green. The door was open, with bright lights pouring into the street. He looked around one last time, as if to make sure no one was watching him.He walked in, his head slightly bowed as he weaved through the stacks of boxes that lined the warehouse. The room was quiet, and for a moment, he wondered if anyon
CHAPTER 48
Author’s POVRune and Wilder paused at the door, exchanging confused glances as Aeris breezed past them. Whatever that call was about seemed to have rattled him really badly. But they knew now wasn’t the time to ask questions; they just had to stay out of his way.“I’m going out to help a friend,” he said, “Stay here. Don’t go anywhere until I’m back.” With that, he turned away and disappeared into his office, the door slamming behind him almost immediately.“Wow,” Rune said, his eyes fixed still on the empty hallway Aeris had just disappeared from.Wilder scoffed lightly, “I’m going to take a nap, needed a break from all of this stuff, actually.” He had been taking the pills Aeris had given him, and so far, they had helped calm him a little. For starters, his eye bags were almost gone.Rune nodded absentmindedly, his eyes still not leaving the hallway even as Wilder’s footsteps grew distant.Without thinking, he walked up to Aeris’s office, his hands raised to knock when the door swu
CHAPTER 49
Author’s POVRune walked into his room, his shoulders collapsed at his sides as he reached for his phone. Whatever had happened to Aeris’s friend, he couldn’t shake off the nagging feeling that it had something to do with them in a way.Because that wasn’t the case, he doubted Aeris would’ve had any problem accepting his offer to help.Pushing the thoughts aside, he sighed as he turned on his phone, his eyes fixed on the screen for a moment.Zayan was the better option to call first; he wanted to get it over and done with.He typed out the name, then pressed the phone against his ears as it rang.“Hello?” The boy’s grumpy voice came from the other end of the line. He sighed into the phone, then seemed to stretch a little.“Did I wake you?” Rune asked, his tone apologetic.“Clearly.” The boy said, “What do you want?”Rune sighed, pausing a moment before stating his business, “Are you okay?”Zayan’s laughter rang from the other end of the line, a mocking tone that seemed to stretch on f
CHAPTER 50
Author’s POVThe darkness seemed to stretch on for as far as his eyes could see, and like a living thing, it was, it moved, slithering across the surface of the earth and consuming everything in its path. The wind was strong against his face, blowing aside loose strands of his hair. A loud growling sound filled the air as flashes of lightning illuminated the sky at intervals.Wilder stood still, his mouth hanging open as he took in the sight before him. There was nothing left, nothing familiar to remind him of the world he knew it to be.Grimfall had won; he had taken over the entire earth, and there was nothing he or anyone else could do to stop it.He looked around, trying to make sense of the landscape, but it was almost impossible as the darkness was all he could see.Tall buildings had been leveled, and everything was at ground level now. There was nothing left standing. The streets were empty for as far as he could manage to see, and there were no signs of people anywhere. His h
