Chapter 21: The Rebirth
“…authorities have confirmed that the businessman, Mr. Karl, who was involved in a late-afternoon traffic accident three months ago, is still officially listed as missing. The scene of the accident provided traces of the accident and investigators believe he may have been swept away by the current. Despite multiple search efforts, no body has been recovered.”“Twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty..” “His girlfriend, Melody Park, and his long-time friend and business associate, Caden Malcolm, were seen earlier today at a private memorial gathering organised by close family members. Sources say both appeared visibly devastated and offered to address the public in a press release soon.“Forty nine, fifty, fifty one…” Karl lowered his chest toward the cold concrete floor.A press release. They even held a funeral without waiting for the investigators to find his body. “Fifty nine…sixty..” When he got his second chance at life, he'd thought he had the upper hand. That he could outwit them
Chapter 22: Charity Gala
The ballroom of the Grand Halcyon Hotel glowed with warm light and marble, its wide glass doors open to a line of black cars delivering guests dressed in silk, tailored suits and expensive jewellery. The charity gala had been advertised for weeks.A night dedicated to rebuilding underprivileged schools.Melody stood at the top of the staircase, one hand resting lightly on Caden’s arm as cameras flashed around them. Her gown clung to her figure, the gold fabric catching the light each time she moved. Her hair had been swept back into a style that framed her face and her make up made her look flawless as usual, with tiny elements that made her look like she had just returned from mourning. Caden, beside her, wore a well tailored black suit and hair swept in a befitting style that made him look younger than he was. He lowered his head toward Melody as microphones were pushed closer.“ I am honoured to be here tonight,” Melody said gently, her voice sounding strained as she had intended.
Chapter 23: Charity Gala #2
Anna followed beside him as though her body had forgotten how to obey her thoughts. The corridor outside the restroom felt narrower than it had a few minutes ago but she didn't seem to notice it. Her entire attention was fixed on the man walking half a step ahead of her. Her hands still linked through his protectively. She stared at the back of his head at first. The line of his neck. The way his shoulders filled the tailored suit without strain. Every detail about him felt familiar and foreign at the same time. Karl had always walked slightly hunched when he was tired but this man looked completely different, his posture straighter than anyone she knew. She kept watching him, afraid that if she blinked for too long, he would vanish into the crowd and it would all be an illusion. Her steps slowed. He turned his head, glancing over his shoulder at her. “I’ll get you out of here.” Her throat tightened. That voice. It was quieter than she remembered. Lower. But the small pause befo
Chapter 24: Suspicions
Melody had not moved from the spot she stood since the moment she saw him.Her hand was still wrapped around the stem of her champagne glass, the cold of it biting into her palm, the bubbles inside long gone because she had been holding it for far too long. The music in the ballroom continued to flow gently through the speakers, laughter and soft applause rising and falling around her, but it all sounded distant, as though she had been pushed behind a thick wall of glass. Her eyes refused to blink, s6aring at the man who supposedly just returned from the dead it seem. Karl was standing at the very center of the room, where everyone could see him. At the right of The Gordon Maxwell. The biggest lobbyist in the entire country if not the world with a fortune the media had said was rolling into the trillions. Her chest tightened so sharply that for a second she thought she might choke.No. It was not possible.Karl was dead! She made sure of it! She had called the damned truck driver f
Chapter 25: The Nemesis
“You're finally here.” Maxwell said as soon as Karl walked in. “Good evening, Grandfather.” Karl said as he got closer and Maxwell’s hand settled briefly against his shoulder as he drew him forward. He's prepared for this event for far too long. This charity gala would be him killing two birds with one stone and tonight had been going exceptionally well for him and right now, he needed more than ever for this to end on a great note. “Gentlemen. Ladies,” Maxwell said. “Allow me to formally introduce someone many of you already know.” Karl did not smile, he kept his hands wrapped around a wine glass as his eyes scanned the guest in front of him. “Karl Gordon.” Closest to Maxwell stood Victor Halstead, his salt-and-pepper hair combed back. Victor’s mouth tightened but not in surprise. Next to him, Lydia Blackwood tilted her head, studying Karl with a faint crease between her brows, as though comparing him to a memory she could not quite place. Thomas Reeve, broader, red-faced an
Chapter 26: One Move Up The Board
“Good evening.”Karl turned fully toward the woman who had stepped into his path. He inclined his head. “Good evening.”For a second, she hesitated, as though deliberating on what to say next. Karl remained completely neutral, three months was enough to kill any form of sympathy he might have for this woman. Her gaze traced his face without apology, stopping at his eyes before drifting away again.“You seem very… familiar with Maxwell,” she said lightly. “I’ve watched him all night. He doesn’t give many people that kind of attention.”Karl shifted his glass from one hand to the other. “We’ve known each other for a long time.”That answer was true enough to be useless.Melody smiled. “I thought that might be the case.” She lifted her own glass but did not drink from it. “I’m Melody.”“Karl,” he replied, offering nothing more. She laughed softly. It was the kind of sound people made when they wanted a conversation to feel easy. “Of course.”Her eyes returned to him again, sharper thi
Chapter 27: Lights Out
Melody’s attention was fixed on the man standing in front of her.Dark hair, beautiful amber eyes and quite the charming smile. She was no fool, she recognised this man almost as soon as he asked her to dance. Zach Jones. The owner of the biggest tech company in the country. He was listed as the hottest bachelor in the last cosmopolitan magazine. She couldn't believe she was dancing with a man with such power and connections! Hell, he could change her life overnight if he chose to. Zach’s hand rested comfortably at the small of her back as he guided her toward the center of the dance floor. His touch was anything but shy, leaning close enough for her to feel his breath on her skin. Her eyes travelled down to his watch, and then his suit, all limited edition. Hell, he's the Zach Jones! Nothing but the best for a man like him. She smiled as they swayed to the music, her eyes finally glancing up to meet his. “You’re Zach." He smiled, "I'm supposing you know who I am.” She shrugs,
Chapter 28: The Shoot Out
Mumurings took over the hall and the orchestra continued playing. Why did the light go off? Is there some kind of special announcement to be made? Then the first gunshot cracked through the room. The sound was so sudden that it froze the entire ballroom. A second shot followed immediately after, echoing against the high ceilings.People screamed and scrambled in all directions. Chairs scraped across the floor and glass shattered somewhere near the bar.“What is going on?!” “Where is security?!” “HELP!!” “OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!” The ballroom erupted in chaos as everyone ran for shelter. Personal security detail cover their clients, guns drawn and ready to retaliate.Karl’s hand tightened instantly around Anna’s wrist and he pulled her down beside him as another shot rang out from the far side of the ballroom.“Stay down,” he said firmly.Anna gasped as he guided her behind one of the marble columns near the dance floor. Guests rushed past them in every direction, some dropping to t
Chapter 29: Aftermath
The long driveway leading to the Gordon mansion was quiet when Karl’s car finally rolled through the wrought-iron gates. The tall hedges lining the road hid the property from the outside world, but tonight the place felt less like a private residence and more like a fortress.Maxwell's security had tripled the moment the old man's security made sure he got out of that hall in one piece. Karl had barely spoken during the drive. His mind raced with a million questions. Those rifles were definitely the work of someone from the underworld but who? He knew the moment his eyes caught the logo on one of the rifles in the light. It's been six years and all he's got is two months of study since his body had decided to go on a month's worth of break after his accident. Hell, it could have been anybody…The city lights faded behind them as the vehicle moved deeper into the estate grounds. His fingers rested loosely against his temple while the events of the evening continued to replay in his
Chapter 30: Waiting.
Karl’s loft was silent except for the sound of his ragged breathing. The lights were off. Only the glow of the streetlights beyond the tall windows filtered into the room, leaving most of the interior wrapped in darkness. He preferred it this way. It helps him concentrate. Karl’s body moved against the floor as he continued the push-ups he had started nearly forty minutes earlier. His palms pressed firmly into the hardwood, arms bending and straightening as his chest lowered and lifted again.Sweat ran slowly down the side of his face before falling onto the floor beneath him. His breathing remained even despite the strain building in his muscles. If only he had seen a little bit more of the men, he knew he would be able to figure out who they were and who sent them..Karl pushed himself up again before lowering slowly to the floor, the muscles in his arms tightening with the motion. The attack replayed in his mind for what felt like the hundredth time. The logo he had seen on what
