Chapter 21: The Rebirth
“…authorities have confirmed that the businessman, Mr. Karl, who was involved in a late-afternoon traffic accident three months ago, is still officially listed as missing. The scene of the accident provided traces of the accident and investigators believe he may have been swept away by the current. Despite multiple search efforts, no body has been recovered.”“Twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty..” “His girlfriend, Melody Park, and his long-time friend and business associate, Caden Malcolm, were seen earlier today at a private memorial gathering organised by close family members. Sources say both appeared visibly devastated and offered to address the public in a press release soon.“Forty nine, fifty, fifty one…” Karl lowered his chest toward the cold concrete floor.A press release. They even held a funeral without waiting for the investigators to find his body. “Fifty nine…sixty..” When he got his second chance at life, he'd thought he had the upper hand. That he could outwit them
Chapter 22: Charity Gala
The ballroom of the Grand Halcyon Hotel glowed with warm light and marble, its wide glass doors open to a line of black cars delivering guests dressed in silk, tailored suits and expensive jewellery. The charity gala had been advertised for weeks.A night dedicated to rebuilding underprivileged schools. Melody stood at the top of the staircase, one hand resting lightly on Caden’s arm as cameras flashed around them. Her gown clung to her figure, the gold fabric catching the light each time she moved. Her hair had been swept back into a style that framed her face and her make up made her look flawless as usual, with tiny elements that made her look like she had just returned from mourning. Caden, beside her, wore a well tailored black suit and hair swept in a befitting style that made him look younger than he was. He lowered his head toward Melody as microphones were pushed closer. “ I am honoured to be here tonight,” Melody said gently, her voice sounding strained as she had intend
Chapter 23: Charity Gala #2
Anna followed beside him as though her body had forgotten how to obey her thoughts. The corridor outside the restroom felt narrower than it had a few minutes ago but she didn't seem to notice it. Her entire attention was fixed on the man walking half a step ahead of her. Her hands still linked through his protectively. She stared at the back of his head at first. The line of his neck. The way his shoulders filled the tailored suit without strain. Every detail about him felt familiar and foreign at the same time. Karl had always walked slightly hunched when he was tired but this man looked completely different, his posture straighter than anyone she knew. But how could Caden have missed that? All of that? She kept watching him, afraid that if she blinked for too long, he would vanish into the crowd and it would all be an illusion. Her steps slowed. He turned his head, glancing over his shoulder at her. “I’ll get you out of here.” Her throat tightened. That voice. It was
Chapter 24: The Prey
Melody sipped her wine in the corner, studying this man who clearly had all the women and men in here on their toes. She watched him standing beside Maxwell Gordon, listening to something one of the older businessmen was saying. Unlike most people in the room, he did not seem eager to dominate the conversation. He spoke only when necessary, yet somehow everyone around him seemed focused on him regardless. It was irritating. And intriguing. Mostly irritating. Because she had spent years attending events like this. She knew how these people worked. Wealthy men loved attention. They practically fought for it. Yet Karl looked as though he could leave at any moment and never think about any of them again. Her eyes narrowed, her curiosity only seemed to get worse. Caden approached her, running his hands through his hair like he always did when he had messed things up. “I messed up.” He muttered. “I figured.” She said, eyes still glued on mystery man as she sipped her wine. God, h
Chapter 25: The Nemesis
“You're finally here.” Maxwell said as soon as Karl walked in. “Good evening, Grandfather.” Karl said as he got closer and Maxwell’s hand settled briefly against his shoulder as he drew him forward. He's prepared for this event for far too long. This charity gala would be him killing two birds with one stone and tonight had been going exceptionally well for him and right now, he needed more than ever for this to end on a great note. “Gentlemen. Ladies,” Maxwell said. “Allow me to formally introduce someone many of you already know.” Karl did not smile, he kept his hands wrapped around a wine glass as his eyes scanned the guest in front of him. “Karl Gordon.” Closest to Maxwell stood Victor Halstead, his salt-and-pepper hair combed back. Victor’s mouth tightened but not in surprise. Next to him, Lydia Blackwood tilted her head, studying Karl with a faint crease between her brows, as though comparing him to a memory she could not quite place. Thomas Reeve, broader, red-faced and
Chapter 26: One Move Up The Board
"I was beginning to think you'd avoid me." The sound of his voice made her turn before she could stop herself. Karl stood beside her, one hand tucked into the pocket of his trousers while the other held a champagne flute loosely between his fingers. Up close, he looked even better. Which was honestly annoying. Melody considered herself difficult to impress. She attended enough charity galas, investor dinners and social events to know exactly how wealthy men behaved when they wanted attention. Most of them tried too hard but this man didn't seem to be trying at all. His gaze rested on her calmly, a smile curling on his lips as he watched her as though he already knew she had been watching him all evening. Of course he did. She hasn't been exactly discreet if she was being honest with herself. Melody forced herself not to react. "Avoid you?" she asked lightly. His mouth curved. "It crossed my mind." She tilted her head. "That's quite an assumption." Karl's eyes drifted towa
Chapter 27: Lights Out
Melody’s attention was fixed on the man standing in front of her. Dark hair, beautiful amber eyes and quite the charming smile. She was no fool, she recognised this man almost as soon as he asked her to dance. Zach Jones. The owner of the biggest tech company in the country. He was listed as the hottest bachelor in the last cosmopolitan magazine. She couldn't believe she was dancing with a man with such power and connections! Hell, he could change her life overnight if he chose to. But she had her eyes on a bigger fish; Karl Gordon. She might not know how he is related to Maxwell Gordon but any one in his family is a big catch. Zach’s hand rested comfortably at the small of her back as he guided her toward the center of the dance floor. His touch was anything but shy, leaning close enough for her to feel his breath on her skin. Her eyes travelled down to his watch, and then his suit, all limited edition. Same with Karl. She smiled as they swayed to the music, her eye
Chapter 28: The Shoot Out
Mumurings took over the hall and the orchestra continued playing. Why did the light go off? Is there some kind of special announcement to be made? Then the first gunshot cracked through the room. The sound was so sudden that it froze the entire ballroom. A second shot followed immediately after, echoing against the high ceilings. People screamed and scrambled in all directions. Chairs scraped across the floor and glass shattered somewhere near the bar. “What is going on?!” “Where is security?!” “HELP!!” “OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!” The ballroom erupted in chaos as everyone ran for shelter. Personal security detail cover their clients, guns drawn and ready to retaliate. Karl’s hand tightened instantly around Melody’s wrist and he pulled her down beside him as another shot rang out from the far side of the ballroom. “Stay down,” he said firmly. Melody gasped as he guided her behind one of the marble columns near the dance floor. Guests rushed past them in every direction, some dropp
Chapter 29: Aftermath
Karl slowed the car as the residential street came into view. The headlights swept across the pavement and the row of houses before settling on the one Melody had pointed out earlier during the drive. He knew exactly where he was headed but had waited for her to point it out herself. Hell, his house still looked very much the same. The sight made his heart punch painfully. He eased his foot onto the brake and brought the vehicle to a smooth stop in front of the gate. His eyes swept over the house quickly; trying to seem as cause as he could possibly afford. Karl glanced at Melody briefly. She sat beside him with her hands resting loosely in her lap. Her fingers were still tense from the events that had happened barely two hours ago. The ballroom, the sudden sound of gunfire, the moment Karl had pulled her out of the way before the chaos fully erupted. It had all happened so quickly that her body still felt as if it was catching up to the shock of it. Karl's eyes narrowed o
Chapter 30: A magnet For Trouble
The long driveway leading to the Gordon mansion was quiet when Karl’s car finally rolled through the wrought-iron gates. The tall hedges lining the road hid the property from the outside world, but tonight the place felt less like a private residence and more like a fortress. Maxwell's security had tripled the moment the old man's security made sure he got out of that hall in one piece. Karl's mind raced with a million questions. Those rifles were definitely the work of someone from the underworld but who? He knew the moment his eyes caught the logo on one of the rifles in the light. It's been six years and all he's got is two months of study since his body had decided to go on a month's worth of break after his accident. Hell, it could have been anybody… The city lights faded behind them as the vehicle moved deeper into the estate grounds. His fingers rested loosely against his temple while the events of the evening continued to replay in his mind. The car slowed as the mans
