Chapter 31: Who Is Karl Gordon
Karl’s loft was silent except for the sound of his ragged breathing. The lights were off. Only the glow of the streetlights beyond the tall windows filtered into the room, leaving most of the interior wrapped in darkness. He preferred it this way. It helps him concentrate. Karl’s body moved against the floor as he continued the push-ups he had started nearly forty minutes earlier. His palms pressed firmly into the hardwood, arms bending and straightening as his chest lowered and lifted again. Sweat ran slowly down the side of his face before falling onto the floor beneath him. His breathing remained even despite the strain building in his muscles. If only he had seen a little bit more of the men, he knew he would be able to figure out who they were and who sent them.. He pushed himself up again before lowering slowly to the floor, the muscles in his arms tightening with the motion. The attack replayed in his mind for what felt like the hundredth time. The logo he had seen on
Chapter 32 : The Chase
Karl stood near the long table that sat in the center of the living area, his attention fixed on the large monitor Zach had connected to his laptop. The glow from the screen washed across the room, illuminating the three men gathered around it while the rest of the loft remained dim. Reed stood a few steps behind Karl with his hands behind his back and faced a void of expression as usual. He had asked Maxwell to allow him the honour of serving Karl again after years of the young master's disappearance. Luckily, the old man had agreed. Why he did remains a mystery to both Karl and Reed. Zach sat in front of the laptop with one leg stretched out under the table and the other bouncing slightly as his fingers moved across the keyboard. Several windows filled the screen; security footage, timestamps, and small digital maps that marked the location of different cameras inside and outside the ballroom where the attack had happened. Karl had decided to look deeper into the att
Chapter 33: The Real Caden
Anna arrived at the office earlier than usual that Monday morning. The building had not yet filled with employees and visitors that normally crowded the halls by midmorning. She could barely sleep during the weekend, not after the strange events of the previous week. She had paid the hospital a visit and they don't seem to know who sorted her brother's hospital bill either which makes it even more strange. That was more than a million dollars and someone had just made payments like it was nothing. How could she sleep? As soon as Monday rolled around the corner, she had made her way down to the office earlier than usual, she needed a distraction. She placed her bag on her desk and switched on her computer, the familiar glow of the screen illuminating the workspace she had grown used to over the past three years. Melody’s schedule had been full this week. A business lunch with investors, a meeting with a marketing firm, two calls with international partners, and an eveni
Chapter 34: No Different From The Devil
Anna did not expect the slap. The sound of it cracked through the office before she even fully processed what had happened. Her head jerked to the side as pain flared across her cheek. For a moment the room spun slightly and she tasted copper at the back of her mouth where her teeth had cut into the inside of her lip. She stood frozen where she was, one hand slowly rising to touch the burning skin of her face. Across the desk, Melody was still standing with her arm half-lowered and her eyes as cold as ever. “How dare you?!” Melody said. Anna blinked, trying to steady herself. Her thoughts struggled to catch up with the situation. Only minutes earlier she had been called into the office without explanation and then she got hit. Across the room, Caden stood behind Melody, hands to his pocket as his gaze remained fixed on Anna. She had always thought Caden would do anything Melody asked but she'd been wrong. He was pretending to be tameable. Melody turned slightly to
Chaoter 35: Drunk Anna
An Hour Prior. Karl sat back on the couch of his loft, staring at the sunset through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Usually, his evenings are quiet but some specimen of a human being decided that would change tonight. Zach leaned against the countertop behind him, arms folded and a sly grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. “You’re not seriously going to sit here all night, are you?” Karl didn’t respond immediately. His eyes followed the sun. He had barely left his apartment since returning, and the thought of leaving and walking into a crowded, loud club seemed almost absurd. Zach dropped into the chair opposite him. “Come on, we used to do this back then.” Karl nodded, “Yes. But I didn't have a target on my back back then.” Zach winched, “Are you sure?" He wasn't exactly the most likeable person back then. At least because he stood for what was right but in the world of lobbyists, that is not a good look. “I don’t need to go out,” Karl said finally
Chapter 36: Recipe For Disaster
Karl pushed open the door to the hotel room as quietly as he could. The last thing he wanted was for him to wake her up. The door swung open and he stepped inside quietly, his eyes adjusting to the dim light filtering through the curtains. His eyes searched the small sitting area, he could have dropped it on the couch or even on the bed. He searched the room but there was no sign of his phone. Karl ran his fingers through his hair, where the hell is it? He walked deeper into the room and stopped to see Anna, sitting on the edge of the bed, her hair tousled from sleep, her cheeks flushed clearly from the shots she had earlier. Her eyes met his, searching his face for something he couldn't really put a finger on. “Hey.” He said quietly. “Just came for my phone. Didn't mean to wake you.” Anna said nothing but she took a step closer to him, eyes fixed on his face with something he couldn't quite pin point. “Anna?” “This has to be a dream.” She mumbled, he could barely mak
Chapter 37: Two Sides Of A Coin
Sunlight crept across the wide bedroom floor and over the large bed where Anna laid under the duvet. She stirred, eyes fluttering open slowly to the bedside drawer next to her. It felt unfamiliar. Usually, she was used to waking up to the distant traffic outside her apartment, the neighbor’s television blasting through the walls, the sound of the fan above her bed but instead, all she could hear was silence. Her brows drew together as her eyes slowly opened. For a moment she did not move. Her mind felt foggy and a slight migraine crawled it way too her head and her eyes. Where is she? This is definitely not her house. What happened then? How did she get here? Anna shifted and her bare skin brushed against the fabric. She paused, eyes darting open in shock. She had no clothes on. Her heart lurched violently in her chest as she yanked the duvet up to see she was in fact, naked. ‘What the hell?’ She panicked. Why is she naked in some random room? What the hell happen
Chapter 38: Horrible Timing
Karl stared at the door for a long second. For once in his life, he was genuinely caught off guard. Behind him, Anna stood frozen near the bed. The color had drained from her face the instant Melody's voice filtered through the door. "Karl? It's me. Melody." Silence settled over the suite. Anna's eyes lifted slowly to meet his. Karl already knew what she was thinking. The timing couldn't have been worse. "Anna…" She didn't wait for him to finish. Grabbing her things, she hurried past him and disappeared into the bathroom before he could say another word. The door clicked shut. Karl rubbed a hand across his jaw. Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. Outside, Melody knocked again. "Karl?" He glanced at the door, brows furrowed. Why the hell is she here? How did she know he was here? Is she stalking him? Before opening the door, his gaze swept over the suite and landed on the bed. Shoot, the stains. A pillow disappeared from the couch and landed neatly over the center of
Chapter 39: Focus
The heavy bag swung violently across the gym. Karl drove another punch into it and the chain above groaned, the bag swung back. He hit it again. And again. And again. His rhythm was viciously aggressive and fast. Any sane person walking by him knew he was upset about something. Sweat rolled down his neck and soaked the collar of his shirt as he unleashed another combination. Left. Right. Hook. Cross. The bag jerked sideways under the impact. Across the ring, Zachwatched quietly while wrapping his hands. "You planning to fight the bag or murder it?" Karl ignored him and another punch landed. The leather cracked loudly. Zach sighed. "Definitely murder." Karl finally stepped back. His chest rose and fell steadily despite the punishment he had just inflicted on the equipment. The anger remained, still sitting in his chest like a stone. Anna's face flashed through his mind…the disappointment in her eyes….The way she'd looked at him before walking away. The way she'd walked aw
Chapter 40: Falling Deep
Melody leaned back into the cushioned chair as the attendant finished her manicure, her gaze drifting lazily across the polished interior. She was at the spa, anything to get away from Caden and his intrusive questions. He was starting to irritate her if she was being honest. Her phone lay face down beside her . For once, she did not want to think about anyone but herself like she's always done. The attendant’s soft voice pulled her back. “You’re all set, ma’am.” Melody gave a small nod, glancing down at her nails before offering a dismissive look. “Better than the last time.” She rose from her seat, smoothing down her outfit as she moved toward the relaxation lounge. The large windows allowed sunlight to spill into the room. A few other guests sat quietly with drinks in hand, absorbed in their own thoughts. Melody reached for a glass of infused water and took a slow sip, letting the coolness calm her. A message notification lit up her screen from Karl. Her thumb
