Chapter 11
Working as a porter had never been Miles Reed’s end goal. It was a means to an end—nothing more. From the very beginning, he had known what the job represented—risk without protection, labor without respect, danger without glory. Porters were tools. Disposable ones. They carried supplies, retrieved loot, absorbed abuse, and were expected to be grateful for the scraps they earned. But desperation didn’t care about pride. Even before everything that happened in the demon gate, Miles had always seen the job as temporary. Dangerous, degrading, and exhausting, yes—but it paid more than anything else he could realistically get at his age. Still, he never planned to stake his future on it. no matter how deep he sank into that world, he had never let go of something else. School. Education was his escape route. It was the thin rope he used to pull himself forward, one painful inch at a time, away from the abyss that swallowed people like him whole. If he could graduate from a good acad
Chapter 12
The ruckus ws already begun to draw attention. Around them, conversations faltered acrissed the room and more heads turned towards their direction. Everyone knew what this scene meant. Zack clicked his tongue. “Unbelievable. This trash is ignoring us.” Beside him stood Noah, sharp-eyed and cruel, and Jordan, whose fists did most of his thinking “Hey. Scholarship boy. You forgot your place?” Noah leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “You really think you can eat before we do?” Miles swallowed, wiped his mouth, and calmly took another bite. The murmurs started. The surrounding tables began to quiet. Students slowed their movements, pretending not to stare while doing exactly that. “You know the deal,” Noah said coldly. “Your job is to bring us our lunch. Every day. Do you realize how long we have been waiting for you to do that.” Miles ignored him. Finally, Noah’s patience snapped. He slammed his palm onto the table. “Are you ignoring us on purpose?” The sound cracked thro

The rumors spread faster than Miles expected. By the time the afternoon bell rang, Miles Reed could feel the weight of countless gazes pressing against his back and whispers followed him through the corridors like shadows that refused to let go. Students leaned close to one another, voices hushed yet sharp, eyes flicking toward him before darting away again. Did you hear? He beat them all. Zack, Noah, Jordan—sent to the clinic. “They’re in the clinic.” “He’s insane.” “He’s finished.” Miles walked with his hands in his pockets, posture relaxed, expression unreadable. He was headed for another lecture when a stern voice called him in the hallway. “Reed.” The voice stopped him mid-step. Miles turned around. He turned to see his homeroom teacher, Mr. Halden, standing stiffly by the classroom door, arms crossed. The man’s eyes held no concern—only irritation, as though Miles were a complication that had disrupted a perfectly ordered system. “Come with me,” Halden said curtly.
Chapter 14
Miles waited for thirty minutes before it finally reached his turn as there were several other individuals who had come before him to their mana reading as well in order to become a registered hunter. Miles was escorted by a staff member to the lab room.In the room they were sent several technicians analyzing data on the computers and at the center of the room was a huge vacuum tube. Upon walking into the room, a man dressed in a lab coat walked towards Chris and greeted “Welcome, Miles Reed. I'm going to be in charge of taking your mana reading today to determine your Awakened rank.” he gestured Miles towards the vacuum tube. “All you need to do is enter this tube and release your Mana and the machine will read your mana pool capacity to help us judge your rank.” The examination hall fell into a hushed stillness as Miles stepped onto the circular platform at its center. Smooth white tiles stretched outward in perfect symmetry, engraved with ancient runes that slowly awaken

Miles walked steadily, weaving through pedestrians without looking back. Cole stayed close, careful not to draw attention. Then Miles turned a corner. Cole followed immediately— but suddenly stopped. A look of surprise flashed across his face Miles was gone. “Shit…” Cole muttered, scanning the street. Crowds moved past him, oblivious. No sign of Miles anywhere. Cole cursed under his breath and pulled out his phone. “Ryan,” he said as soon as the call connected. “He’s alive.” There was a silence that lasted a second. “…I saw him,” Cole continued, voice tense.“ He just left the Awakener Association.” Another pause. “No, he didn’t confront me. But this is bad. Real bad.” Cole hung up and hailed a cab, his mind racing. Behind him, unseen, Miles stood inside a small shop across the street, watching calmly through the glass as Cole entered the taxi and drove off. Miles’ eyes were cold as he watched Cole closely. When he left the awakener association he sensed that he was b

Wood splintered. Hinges screamed. The force of the kick sent the door crashing against the wall as a figure stepped through the dust and debris. Miles Reed walked into the room. Silence. Then— “…I told you,” Cole whispered hoarsely. Ryan’s tension eased almost instantly. Lena blinked, surprise flashing across her face before she scoffed lightly. “So it really is you.You really made it out alive - but how?” Miles’ gaze swept over them calmly, unhurried, as though he’d just entered a café instead of the home of people who had tried to kill him. “ I was expecting a warm welcome but you guys don't look happy to see me.” He remarked in a sarcastic tone. Cole let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding and looked at Ryan and Lena. “I wasn’t mistaken.”You guys didn't want to believe me.” Lena turned to Miles. “How did you find this place?” Miles tilted his head slightly. “It wasn’t difficult.” His eyes slid to Cole. “I just followed him.” Ryan’s gaze snapped to Cole, disap
Chapter 17
Ryan and Lena were both shocked. Cole was an experienced D-Rank hunter and Miles was just a regular human. There was a significant gap in their strength so it didn't make sense for Cole to be defeated by Miles. “What the hell are you looking at? - Hurry up and get him.” Ryan shouted at the top of his voice, snapping Lena out of a shocked state. Lena grabbed her twin dagger and dashed towards Miles. Compared to Cole she was much more agile due to her traits as an assassin. She leapt into the air and slashed downwards with her dagger but Miles moved sideways to evade it. Lena didn't waste time dwelling on her failed attack as he quickly swung her second dagger towards Miles aiming for his neck. Miles saw the incoming attack and moved his face backwards to avoid being cut. Lena hissed. This time she was disappointed. She recollected herself hoping to still get the advantage and with precision she struck aiming to stab Miles but this time around Miles didn't have the intention

Ryan’s foot slammed into the floor, cracking tiles as he launched forward, sword slashing horizontally with terrifying speed. The blade screamed through the air, aimed straight for Miles’ torso. It was too fast. Anyone else would have been split in two. Miles twisted his body at the last moment, the blade grazing past his clothes, slicing fabric but missing flesh by a hair’s breadth. The force of the swing alone sent a violent gust crashing into the wall behind him. Ryan didn’t stop. He pivoted smoothly, chaining his attack into an upward slash, then a downward cleave, then a thrust aimed directly at Miles’ heart. Miles moved sideways as the blade cleaved past his neck, slicing a deep groove into the wall behind him. Ryan growled, shocked that he missed but that didn't stop him from making another attempt. Instantly, spinning into a brutal backhand slash aimed at Miles’ ribs. The room echoed with the sound of violent impacts as Miles dodged again and again—sometimes by inche
Chapter 19
Ryan lay twisted on the floor, his body no longer obeying him. Both legs bent at impossible angles. One arm dangled uselessly, shattered beyond repair, while the other trembled weakly as he dragged himself backward inch by inch, leaving a smear of blood across the cracked tiles. His sword—his pride—lay broken beside him. Miles stood over him, silently watching him. Ryan’s chest heaved violently. Every breath scraped his lungs raw, panic clawing its way up his throat as his eyes locked onto Miles’ expressionless face. “W-Wait…” Ryan croaked. Miles tilted his head slightly, as if considering whether Ryan’s words were worth hearing. “I—I surrender,” Ryan stammered, saliva and blood spilling from his lips. “Miles… please. Don’t do this.” His voice cracked. “I was wrong. I admit it. I shouldn’t have abandoned you. I panicked. That’s all it was—panic.” Ryan laughed weakly, desperately. “You survived, right? So… no harm done.” Miles crouched in front of him. Ryan flinched, overwh

He didn’t slow until several blocks had swallowed him. The city streets were a maze of dim streetlights and shadows. Miles moved like a predator, silent, alert. His heartbeat was steady, not from fear but from focus. Even now, after everything, his mind was sharp. Every sense, every thought, calibrated for survival, for home. Home. That was the only place he needed to reach tonight. When his apartment building finally came into view, Miles allowed himself a small breath of relief. The old, worn structure stood quietly under the dim streetlights, its cracked walls and flickering bulbs painfully familiar. He entered the building, climbing the old stairways until he reached the entrance of his apartment. And then the voice came. “Well, well. Look who finally decided to crawl back home.” Miles froze and silently sighed out of frustration. It was his old, grumpy and lousy landlord, The landlord leaned against the doorway, cigarette dangling lazily from a yellowed lip, eyes shar
