Chapter 31
Nathan, his grandmother, and Stacy were seated at the long mahogany table in the dining room, just waiting for Grandma to finish her stew as well. She had scolded both Stacy and Nathan when they had the idea to order takeout when she was there to cook for them.“You see, my children,” the woman said, referring also to Stacy as her child, “eating from restaurants is not healthy. You should not outsource the needs of your stomach to people you don’t know. Let people you know cook for you if you don’t know how to cook. This is why I am here. I won’t let you two go to bed hungry, nor would I want you to buy some trashy food from a trashy restaurant anyway.”“Okay, Grandma,” Nathan said, heaving a sigh. “Well, at least I’ve eaten back at the old place. How are you going to cope, Stacy? Did you manage to eat anything from yesterday to now?”Stacy’s face had grown pale. “No, and that’s the mistake I made. I’m so hungry now and I don’t know what to do.”“Don’t worry,” the grandmother said. “I
Chapter 32
Nathan was in his room playing video games on his flat-screen TV with some of his friends loitering about, alcohol in their styrofoam cups stacked two high, when his phone rang beside him.“Arghhh!” he groaned. “Who the fuck is calling me at this time? The fuck? If I lose this game because… Oh shit! I lost.”He turned the phone over, anger flashing across his eyes. The number on the screen was unrecognizable.“I hate strange numbers calling me,” he said before picking up the call. “Look, I don’t care who you are or what you want from me—just don’t call this number again.”He hung up before the caller could say anything, setting the phone beside him once again, about to go back to the game he was playing before he was interrupted yet again. The phone rang once more, interrupting his thoughts as he played. “What the fuck is this? I thought I gave this caller a damn warning.”He picked up the call, this time waiting for the caller to speak.“Are you Mr. Michael Lee?” the caller asked.“W
Chapter 33
After the call, Nathan sat quietly, not touching his food.“What’s wrong, my child?” Charity, his grandmother, asked. “You’re not eating. You know I made this food especially for you, right?”Nathan shook his head affirmatively. In his mind there was nothing but turmoil. He really did not want to have anything to do with Amelia. But she had gotten herself entangled in a situation where she would be killed if he acted as though he had nothing to do with her. And if she died, there was no way it wouldn’t weigh heavy on his conscience. Rhea was right. Even with the money, even with how much he had tried to darken his heart, he still had a heart of gold.“Are you sure you’re okay?” Stacy asked. “Your grandma’s cooking is good—that’s why I’m curious why you’re moody.”“There’s just something I need to do,” Nathan said as he picked up the phone to call the strange number that had buzzed him before. The call was answered in a split second. The voice that came through was gruff and yet filled
Chapter 34
"I can tell you're very tired, Grandma," Nathan said to Charity. "You should go to bed.""What nonsense are you talking about?" Charity yawned, trying to protest. "Well, maybe you're right. Maybe I need some rest.""You think so, Grandma?" Nathan asked, eyes smiling with his lips. "You just spent a long time cooking so of course you're going to be tired.""Okay, okay," the woman said, standing up. "Just promise me that you two wouldn't be up to anything bad or crazy. And that you will not order takeout while I'm asleep?""No, we won't," Nathan said. "What about you, girly?" She pointed a finger at Stacey. "Promise me you won't order any more takeout for my grandchild?"Stacey felt a little flustered. "I promise, ma'am," she said. "I won't be ordering any more takeouts." "And also, Nathan," the old woman continued. "When am I getting my great grandkids?"Nathan's face transformed red. "Alright, Mom. Alright," he began, holding her by the hand. "It's obvious you really, really do need
Chapter 35
Amelia woke up in the hospital. Her head felt heavy as it sank into the pillow laid on her hospital bed. The room smelled like medicine and drugs, the kind of things one usually found in a place like that. Up above her was a television broadcasting something on the news. It seemed they were talking about something she knew about."The kidnapping," she said in a gasp of breath. Her voice softened afterwards. "I was kidnapped. No, I got myself kidnapped. That's it. And Nathan helped me."It seemed as if she had forgotten some of the things that happened on that day and was starting to recall all of it bit by bit. She did not know how she ended up in the hospital or who brought her there. The door pulled open and a man wearing a white coat walked in, holding a file in one hand and a pen in the other. He wasn't looking at her. His eyes were focused on the file he was holding. A stethoscope was over his neck, falling on both sides of his shoulders. "You're awake," he said, taking a qui
Chapter 36
Nathan was on the patio, trying to get a better view of the neighborhood when he heard some sounds from the door at the other side of the house. There were voices, one of a woman and the other of men. He left immediately and got down to the door where he saw Amelia in a constrained argument against the guards who were trying to be lenient with her by all means."Ma'am," one of the guards began, biting down on the anger boiling in his throat. "I am telling you that for you to be here you have to give us proof that you were infact invited here by the owner.""You can't tell me what to do," she pointed out to them. "Nathan stays here and I am sure that he would let me come here anytime I want? We have a relationship.""Ma'am," the other guard began. "Look, you're not understanding us so we will give you some time for you to leave by counting to three.""Do your worst if you want to be fired," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. She looked disheveled, as though she had not gone ho
Chapter 37
Nathan gently pulled his arm away from her. She gasped in shock as he looked her in the eye.“What’s wrong, my love?” she asked, about to grab hold of him once more, only for him to pull away as he had before.“Don’t touch me,” he said. She flinched. “Do you want to know the real reason why I paid to have you released when Michael did not pay?”She had no answer for him. He continued speaking. “I paid because I don’t let people die on my watch. I paid because I had the means to help you, and it would be inconsiderate of me not to have done so. I paid because my heart could not watch you suffer. I paid because I made a promise to myself not to lose my heart because I have gained the whole world.”“No,” Amelia said, her voice shaking. “You’re just protecting your heart. I know the truth. You love me. You want us to be together. That’s the only reason you saved me, right? Tell me! We belong together, Nathan.”“No, we don’t, Amelia,” Nathan replied, walking backwards. “Go home, Amelia. Yo
Chapter 38
Amelia went straight to her room, tears still staining her cheeks as she cried. Her dormmates’ eyes were all on her as she fell onto the bed, her makeup staining the sheets.“What happened to you, Amelia?” one of them asked, about to touch her. She flipped the hand off with a screech.“Leave me alone!” The girl flinched back.“What has gotten into you, Amelia?”Amelia said nothing to her. She stood up from the bed and sprinted toward the restroom.“No, no,” she screamed as she ran. “I don’t want this. I don’t want this at all! Why don’t you want me, Nathan? What can she give that I can’t give to you?”The girl turned back to the others in the room. “What do you think has gotten into her?”“Haven’t you heard?” another girl asked. “She was kidnapped and no one came to save her except her ex-boyfriend. And you know who her ex-boyfriend was, right?”“The Pauper King?” another one of the girls replied.“Yes. Nathan Rhodes. Now her present boyfriend, Michael Lee, wants nothing to do with he
Chapter 39
Sunday evening after Amelia's visit, the sun was almost down when Nathan was jolted up from falling asleep by the buzzing of his phone. It was not a call but a notification. From the sound of it, he could recognize that it was none other than his email notification."What again?" He muttered to himself, rising up from his bed. This was his only chance to get a good rest before Monday, when he would have to start attending to the duties of his newfound life as a company owner. He might as well have just ignored it and gone right ahead to sleep, but something about the sound of the buzz made him think otherwise. He picked up the phone, swiped, and read. It was an email letter from his school signed by the Dean himself. He hated the man because of how gruffly he treated him the last time they met, and now as he read the letter, he wondered what exactly could have gone wrong."Mr. Nathan Rhodes," the letter read. "You are invited to an urgent meeting concerning the conduct and reported vi

"Mr. Rhodes," the Dean began, "you have been summoned here because Ms. Frank's recent outburst and physical altercations are directly tied to your influence and past relationship with her."Nathan breathed deeply, shocked. "Sir, can I ask how any of what she did is my fault? For one, I don't even know what happened.""We'll discuss that as soon as you sit down," the man said, eyes hardened at him. "Sit. I will not send your so-called escort out on the count that she won't do anything, nor will you make her interrupt us. Is that clear?""Yes, sir.""Michael and Melody," the Dean began, "present your case. Michael opened with a smirk. "I thought you would never ask, sir. Ambrose. Earlier today, Ms. Amelia attacked Ms. Bertha. A dormmate of hers. And for what reason, you might ask? Because of Nathan. They had a relationship and he broke her heart, and for some reason she came to school and threw a comb at Bertha's face. Now, normally that shouldn't be enough reason to summon Nathan to p
