Nathan Rhodes stood in front of the tall mirror in his tiny off-campus apartment where he lived with his grandmother, adjusting the collar of the suit he had rented just for tonight. The fabric was smooth, elegant even, but it didn’t belong to him. He knew that much. The suit hugged his lean frame perfectly, the polished shoes beneath it gleaming under the dim yellow light of the room. To anyone who didn’t know better, he looked like a young man born into privilege—confident, refined, and ready for a night of luxury.

But Nathan knew the truth.

Every thread on his body was borrowed. Every dollar that made tonight possible had been scraped together over weeks of skipped meals, juggling multiple errands, and tutoring sessions that drained his energy but kept his bank account barely alive. This night meant everything to him.

Tonight, he planned to make things official.

At twenty-two, Nathan Rhodes was a student of Elite Society University—ESU—one of the most prestigious institutions in Manhattan, New York. A school reserved for heirs, heiresses, prodigies, and power. He didn’t belong there by blood or wealth, but by brilliance. He was one of the five recipients of the Presidential Scholarship awarded annually to students from low-income backgrounds with exceptional academic records.

That scholarship had changed his life.

And so had Amelia.

Nathan checked his reflection one last time, took a deep breath, and grabbed his phone. His balance stared back at him coldly: $19,742.18. Every cent he owned.

“It’ll be enough,” he muttered to himself, forcing confidence into his voice. “It has to be.”

Glasgow Diner wasn’t just any restaurant—it was known across campus as the cheapest fine-dining option ESU students frequented. That was why Nathan had chosen it. Affordable luxury. A place where his hard-earned savings could stretch far enough to create a magical night for the woman he loved.

At least, that’s what he thought.

Now seated alone at a neatly arranged table near the window, Nathan clasped his hands together, trying to steady the anxious pounding of his heart. The restaurant glowed with soft golden lights. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead. Gentle classical music filled the air. The scent of expensive spices and fine wine lingered everywhere.

This didn’t feel cheap.

Nathan swallowed.

His eyes darted around nervously as waiters in crisp uniforms moved gracefully between tables, serving couples and groups who laughed freely, as though money was nothing more than a number.

That’s when he overheard it.

“…Yes sir, the bottle of wine you ordered for your lady is twelve thousand dollars. It’s the cheapest option we currently have available.”

Nathan’s heart skipped violently.

“Twelve… thousand?” he whispered under his breath, his fingers tightening around the edge of the table.

The waiter continued speaking to the customer nearby, completely unaware that he had just shattered someone else’s reality.

“And as for the meals, our lowest-priced dish tonight starts at ten thousand dollars per plate.”

Nathan felt the blood drain from his face.

Ten thousand dollars.

Per plate.

He sat frozen, his mind spinning as though the floor beneath him had tilted. His ears rang. For a moment, he thought he might actually pass out right there in his seat.

Cheapest restaurant on campus?

Cheapest?

His hands trembled as he quickly unlocked his phone and refreshed his banking app—once, twice, three times—like a desperate gambler hoping the numbers would magically change.

They didn’t.

Still under twenty thousand dollars.

Still not enough.

He started calculating frantically.

Wine: $12,000.

One meal: $10,000.

That was already $22,000.

He was short.

Two thousand dollars short.

And that was assuming he didn’t eat.

Nathan let out a shaky breath, his chest tightening painfully. Was he supposed to sit there sipping wine while Amelia ate alone? What excuse would he even give?

“I’m not hungry…”

“I just want to admire you…”

The words sounded hollow even in his head.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.

He had planned this night meticulously. A romantic dinner. Soft music. Candlelight. Then, when the moment felt right, he would take Amelia’s hand, look her in the eyes, and ask her to be his official date to the upcoming ESU Gala.

The ESU Gala.

The most prestigious social event of the year. A night where status was everything. Where couples were scrutinized, judged, remembered.

If Amelia accepted, it would mean she was proud to stand beside him—publicly.

It would mean everything.

But now… everything was falling apart before it even began.

Nathan pushed his chair back slowly, his mind made up.

He would leave.

Find somewhere outside campus. Somewhere reasonable. Somewhere his twenty thousand dollars could actually buy a full meal, a smile, and dignity. He reached for his phone, already dialing Amelia’s number to explain the change of venue.

The phone rang once.

Then twice.

Then—

He heard it.

The faint echo of a ringtone… right behind him.

Nathan’s head snapped up.

And there she was.

Amelia stepped into the restaurant like a vision pulled straight out of a dream.

Her blonde hair shimmered under the lights, cascading down her back as though each strand had been placed with divine care. She wore a stunning gown that hugged her curves perfectly, paired with red heels that clicked softly against the polished floor. Every step she took was deliberate, confident—hypnotic.

Conversations around them died down.

Heads turned.

Time itself seemed to pause as she walked forward, her presence commanding the room.

Nathan forgot how to breathe.

Amelia wasn’t just beautiful—she was untouchable. A scholarship student like him, yes, but unlike Nathan, she had found her way into the elite circles of ESU through charm, elegance, and sheer beauty. On campus, she was known as a goddess. A solid nine by everyone’s standards.

And she was his girlfriend.

Nathan’s chest swelled painfully with pride.

She was the best thing that had ever happened to him since receiving the Presidential Scholarship. His miracle. His dream.

He stood there frozen, staring at her like a man spellbound, completely forgetting about the cost of wine, meals, and his crumbling plans.

“Nathan.”

He didn’t respond.

“Nathan.”

Still nothing.

“NATHAN!”

Her voice cut through his trance, louder this time.

He jolted, stammering as words tumbled out of his mouth incoherently. Amelia frowned slightly and reached out, tapping his arm to snap him back to reality.

“Pull yourself together,” she whispered, her tone sharp. “You’re embarrassing me.”

Nathan flushed, nodding rapidly. “I—I’m sorry. I just—”

Before he could say more, Amelia smiled and gestured behind her.

“Oh! I almost forgot. I want you to meet my friends.”

Friends?

Nathan’s heart skipped again.

Three girls stepped forward.

Bella. Ava. Melody.

Each one striking in her own way. Each one dressed in luxury Nathan could recognize even without knowing brands. Their beauty rivaled one another, but even among them, Amelia stood out effortlessly.

Nathan straightened his posture and extended his hand politely, shaking each of theirs with a nervous smile.

‘She’s introducing me,’ he thought, awe flooding his chest. ‘She wants to make us official.’

Hope bloomed again.

“This is Nathan,” Amelia said brightly. “My boyfriend.”

The word boyfriend echoed in his ears like a blessing.

The girls smiled knowingly.

“Oh?” Bella said, eyeing him up and down. “We’ll see how well you treat our Amelia tonight.”

Ava smirked. “Yes. Let’s see if you can live up to her standards.”

Melody tilted her head, unimpressed. “She deserves the best.”

Amelia laughed softly. “Don’t worry. I’m sure he’ll exceed your expectations.”

Nathan smiled at first.

Then… slowly… his smile faded.

Exceed their expectations?

What expectations?

This wasn’t supposed to be like this.

Ava noticed the shift in his expression immediately. “What’s wrong?” she asked coolly. “Do you think our standards are too high for you?”

Nathan’s mind screamed YES.

These were ESU’s elite beauties. Their casual spending habits probably exceeded his annual living expenses. One wrong order here could bury him in debt for years.

But outwardly, he said nothing. He simply forced another smile.

Melody scoffed. “He looks like he’s about to die. Honestly, Amelia, is he always this dull?”

‘My life is actually on the line,’ Nathan thought bitterly.

Amelia frowned and discreetly tapped his arm again. “Act alive,” she muttered. “Stop embarrassing me.”

Before Nathan could recover, the girls waved down a waiter.

“We’ll be dining in the exclusive VIP lounge,” Bella said.

Nathan’s blood ran cold.

The waiter bowed. “Certainly, miss. Please follow me. Orders in the VIP lounge start from two hundred thousand dollars.”

Two hundred… thousand?

Nathan broke into a cold sweat.

That was ten times his entire budget. Ten times the most money he had ever held in his life.

He grabbed Amelia’s wrist gently, pulling her aside. “Amelia… please. What’s going on?”

She looked at him calmly. “I brought my friends. You’re hosting dinner for us. That’s what’s going on.”

Nathan’s heart sank. “That wasn’t the plan. I thought tonight was just us.”

She hesitated for a second, then sighed. “Fine. I just wanted to introduce you to them first. Make things official.”

She paused, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Unless… you’re not serious about us anymore? Melody was planning to introduce me to someone else.”

Fear gripped Nathan instantly.

“No,” he blurted. “Of course not.”

He couldn’t lose her.

Not now.

“I’m sorry,” he said quickly. “I love you. I’ll do anything for you.”

Amelia smiled faintly. “I love you too. I just want you to prove it.”

She squeezed his hand once… then turned and walked back to her friends.

Nathan stood there, numb.

Where was he supposed to get two hundred thousand dollars?

Then he heard Melody’s voice ring out.

“Bring us a bottle of the Chateau Cheval Blanc 1947. Five hundred thousand dollars.”

Bella laughed. “Make it three bottles.”

Ava added casually, “And arrange for a celebrity chef to serve us.”

The restaurant erupted into applause.

Nathan’s vision blurred.

Three bottles—$1.5 million.

Celebrity chef—$3.5 million.

Five million dollars.

For dinner.

His heart gave out.

The world went dark as Nathan Rhodes collapsed to the floor.

Aaron and John felt strangely hollow without Nathan’s presence. Three days had passed since the Larry incident at the beach restaurant, and the campus buzz on the issue had shifted from admiration, to confusion, and then to concern. Whispers followed Aaron and John everywhere they walked. People were looking at them, looking for Nathan, looking for signs of him wherever he was.“Have you seen him?” a freshman asked, clutching her phone like evidence, eyes darting from side to side. “He hasn’t been to class. I haven't seen him in even one lecture. Not even the gym.”Aaron shook his head. “No, we haven't seen him too. We don't even know where he is right now. It was another date at the beachfront restaurant. The place glowed warm Edison bulbs all connected by strings dangling over the customer's heads, with the waves of water from a few feet away rolling in what seemed like whispers just beyond the open terrace.Nathan sat across from Golden, one of the seven women, at a corner table draped in yellow linen. Her golden-blond hair caught the light from the bulbs above her head, while her deep brown eyes reflected the candle flame between her and Nathan. She was mid-sentence, laughing softly about a ridiculous modeling gig, when a commotion erupted near the hostess stand. A boy who seemed to be no older than seventeen, broke through the velvet rope, his trainers skidding on the polished stone floor.
