CHAPTER 61 : Army Of The Dead 2
But even with all this, the skeletons were closing the gap despite the fire. The soldiers were cutting them down fast but there were still so many of them coming through that the front lines kept reforming. One of them got close enough to the right flank to reach a soldier before he could adjust. The soldier scrambled back, but the skeleton grabbed his arm and pulled hard. There was a crack, the man cried out and fell to the ground. "Tom, left side," Rob's voice came from the trees.Tom swung around and put two rounds into the skeleton at close range. The fuller scattered its skull and it dropped to the ground letting go of the soldier. The injured soldier on the ground was grabbed by Jeffery and dragged back behind cover.Logan on the other hand had moved forward slightly, putting himself just at the edge of cover, firing steadily into the mass. There were still forty or fifty of them on their feet, though they were slow, they were still pushing forwardThere was no hesitation or
CHAPTER 62 : Voidmaws 1
Logan and his group continued moving, He walked at the front with Nicholas on his right and Daisy on his left. Rob, Tom and Jeffery moved a few steps behind them. The rest of the unit followed in a loose column, spread out enough to move through the trees but still tight enough to stay together. The directional marker on the bracelet was still pointing ahead. Right now, nobody was talking. After the Army of the Dead, the unit had settled into a focused silence. Even the soldiers who had been shaken by the skeletons were moving with more purpose now. They had seen what the forest could throw at them and they were still standing, it was clear that they now trusted Logan's judgment to the fullest now. But that wasn't entirely true, because, at the very back of the column, two soldiers walked together. One of them was tall with a hard face and a small scar that ran diagonally across his left cheek. His name was Crane and he carried himself so highly that he had a belief not to answer
CHAPTER 63 : Voidmaws 2
“Change of plan” "What?" Osie muttered. He couldn't help but wonder what it was that Crane had in mind this time. Those creatures don't look friendly at all and the last thing Osei wanted to do right now was to get closer to them. Crane turned and looked at him. There was something close to a smile on his face, which was not a reassuring thing to see on a man with a scar like his."We don't go back yet," Crane said, still smiling devilishly. He reached down and unclipped something from his vest. A field mine. Small, flat, it was the kind that didn't take much pressure to trigger.Osei stared at it, his eyes wide, "Where did you even get that?""I always carry two," Crane said flatly. He was already moving, staying low as he worked his way gently around the edge of the clearing in a wide arc.Crane made sure to stay far enough back that the nearest creatures hadn't picked up on him yet. One of the animals near the outer edge had its head down, its flanks rising and falling slowly.
CHAPTER 64 : Why?
The gunfire continued sounding in the forest for a full ten minutes straight.Logan pressed his back against the tree, breathing hard, then pushed off it and dropped low as another Voidmaw came at him from the side. He swung his blade first, catching it across the neck, then finished it off with two rounds to the skull. The creature dropped dead immediately. "They're not tough," Logan shouted over the noise. "Aim for the head or the neck. They go down fast if you hit right."It was right, though the bracelet didn't give him any further information about the voidmaws,Logan could see clearly that they were not tough, they were just like normal animals. Only that they were more mindless and are extremely strong. The only information Logan had gotten from the bracelet was the name of the animal and the fact that they only attack when they are disturbed. Right now, Daisy was beside Logan, firing in controlled bursts. She caught one Voidmaw mid-leap and it crumpled before it even reac
CHAPTER 65 : The Castle Of The Last King 1
The group continued moving, despite what crane and Osei did, Logan didn't really punish them. The soldiers had all expected a severe punishment from Logan, but Logan didn't, However, he didn't spare them either. Logan took their weapons from them and kept the two at the front where he could see them, that way they wouldn't commit any more havoc. It was because of them that they lost over thirty soldiers, which means Logan was left with about sixty three soldiers. This wasn't a bad number, but to Logan it was. If it was possible for him to reach the last king with the whole one hundred soldiers without losing anyone, he would. But casualties and deaths were inevitable. The group continued walking until they arrived at the throne. The clearing opened up ahead of them as they stepped out of the trees. And there they could see a castle.Logan tapped the bracelet and the screen appeared. [The Castle of the Last King.]*** ***Outside, back at the white room, the representatives hav
CHAPTER 66 : The Castle Of The Last King 2
"That would've gone through you," Nicholas said quietly, staring at the same spot."Everybody stay behind me," Logan said, standing back up. "Watch where I step, watch what I touch. If I stop, you stop."Nicholas looked at him, his eyes filled with respect "How did you know that was there?""I didn't," Logan admitted. “Well I just went with my gut”Nicholas studied Logan for a second, then nodded slowly. Whatever doubt he still carried about Logan, it was getting smaller by the hour. They moved forward again, though slower this time. Logan checked the floor with his eyes before every step, scanning the walls too for anything that looked different. After all the attack of the voidmaws that kills over thirty soldiers, Logan couldn't afford to lose anymore soldiers. His goal had been to make sure none of his soldiers were killed, but it was inevitable. The selfishness of one of his soldiers, Crane, had led to the death of thirty. The deed had already been done and the only thing Loga
CHAPTER 67 : The Last King 1
The moment Logan and his group stepped through the door, the darkness inside the room vanished.Torches lit up all around the walls at once, though nobody had touched them. The light spread fast, climbing up stone pillars and old banners until the whole room was bright.Logan stopped in the doorway, his eyes going wide as he saw this. The room was massive. Logan could see stone pillars running along both sides, each one carved with the same strange symbols they'd seen in the hallway. The floor was polished black tile, it was so clean it almost looked like it was wet probably due to how shiny it was. And at the far end, raised above everything else on a wide stone platform, sat a throne. And lastly, there was a figure sitting on the throne. He was humanoid, built like a man, but everything about him did not look human.Logan just couldn't explain it, he wasn't sure if this was due to the fact that his shoulders were too wide or that his arms were too long. There was a golden crown
CHAPTER 68 : The Last king 2
Logan rolled up onto his feet fast, breathing hard."He's fast," Logan called back. "Actually faster than he looks."The five soldiers opened fire from behind, bullets landing rapidly on the king's back and shoulders. Sparks flew again, but the king barely even reacted. It was as if he was being disturbed by annoying flies. Then he turned around, raising his sword "No!" Logan shouted. "Get back, get back now!"Two of the soldiers scrambled backward, but the third was too slow. The king crossed the distance in a blink and swung his blade in a wide arc.The soldier didn't even have time to scream. The blade caught him across the middle and he dropped in two pieces before hitting the floor.Daisy's face went pale as she saw this "Oh God—""Get to the pillars!" Logan shouted. "Use them for cover!"The remaining soldiers scattered, ducking behind the thick stone pillars along the walls. Daisy grabbed Logan's arm and pulled him toward the nearest one, both of them pressing their backs a
CHAPTER 69 : The Last King 3
"Sir," Vincent said, stepping in front of Damon before the twenty soldiers could even move. "Enough. This is enough."Damon looked at him, clearly unbothered. "Get out of my way, Vincent.""You've already lost ten men," Vincent said, his voice already shaking now, not from fear but from anger. "For what? A pattern? You could've studied him from a distance. You didn't need to send them in to die.""But I did," Damon said simply. "And now I know how he moves. That's worth more than ten lives to me."Vincent's jaw tightened, he couldn't believe what he had just heard. "You don't mean that.""I do." Damon muttered in a low but firm tone. "Stand down. Vincent"Vincent stared at him for a long moment, his hands curling into fists at his sides. He couldn't believe Damon would truly go on with this.Damon had sacrificed nearly all of the soldiers even before they got to the last king and now he was still sacrificing more. Vincent gritted his teeth unsure of what to do at first, but after a w
CHAPTER 70 : The Last King 4
In the other reality, the doors at the back of the hallway burst open, and the remaining fifty-five soldiers who had been waiting outside came pouring into the throne room. They formed quickly around Logan, Nicholas, Daisy, and the two soldiers left from the original group.Logan lowered his sword slightly, breathing hard, sweat dripping down his face as he looked around at the fresh wave of soldiers now filling the room behind him."Logan," Nicholas said, coming up beside him. "They caught up. We've got numbers now."Logan remained quiet, his eyes were fixed on the Last King, who stood in the center of the room with two thin cuts along his side and arm, blood still trickling slowly. The king's pale eyes moved across the newly arrived soldiers,”new arrivals, interesting” Earlier Logan had thought about the whole thing, he knew with their numbers, they might stand a chance in defeating the last king, however it would come at a large cost. Logan knew he would lose a whole lot of sol
