CHAPTER 11
Everyone in the hall was still filled with disbelief when the video finished playing, and for a brief moment, it felt as though the entire world had paused just to absorb what had just happened. The murmurs that followed were louder than before, no longer filled with mockery or suspicion, but with awe, shock, and a growing sense of fear for the man who stood calmly beside Michelle Donovan.Phones began to vibrate all around the hall, not just Michelle’s this time, but those of investors, reporters, influencers, board members, and guests all around. Screens lit up one after the other as notifications flooded in at a pace that felt unreal. News outlets were updating their headlines in real time. Social media feeds refreshed endlessly. The same name that had been dragged through the mud minutes ago was now being defended with ferocity.Michelle’s phone buzzed nonstop in her hand. She barely had time to read one message before another popped up, and then another, and another. Her heart w
CHAPTER 12
Michelle stood very still for a moment after everything finally settled, as if her heart needed time to catch up with what her eyes had just witnessed. She realized that she felt protected in a way she had not felt in a very long time.“Thank you,” she muttered. Richard turned to her, and for a brief moment, the authority in his gaze softened. His eyes held hers, steady and reassuring, and he nodded once, as if what he had done required no thanks at all.Michelle shook her head slightly, still trying to process everything, still trying to fit the pieces together in her mind. She could not believe it. Her husband was not just an ordinary man. The way Richard had spoken to Carlo Moretti, the confidence that did not waver even for a second, it was something that could not be faked. She had seen powerful men before. She had dealt with them in meetings, watched them make threats and watched them crumble when things did not go their way. But Richard had been different. He had not raised hi
CHAPTER 13
After the whole drama of the evening, the party was set to get started. But then, Richard had an important unfinished business to attend to. Michelle had wanted him to stay until the end but it was not possible as he had to attend to his business immediately.“I’ll be home soon,” he promised.Marty waved enthusiastically, still riding the high of the night’s events, and Richard smiled faintly at him, lifting a hand in return. He got into his car and shut the door with a soft but final click. For a brief second, he rested his hands on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed ahead, breathing slow and measured. He thought of Michelle’s trusting gaze, of Marty’s proud smile, and then his thoughts shifted, sliding into darker territory.Richard started the engine and pulled onto the road, the city lights rushing past him as he drove farther away from the gala venue. The streets grew less crowded the deeper he went, the noise of celebration replaced by the hum of tires against asphalt and the d
CHAPTER 14
Richard’s eyes shifted back to the lady and he noticed that just beside her, there was a small child. The woman was beautiful in a natural way. Her dark hair fell loosely over her shoulders, and her eyes were calm but alert,. She held the hand of the small girl, who peeked shyly from behind her mother’s leg, her tiny fingers curled tightly around the fabric of her dress.Richard looked up and Rico swallowed hard.“Boss,” he said quickly, his voice respectful but tense. “I owe you an apology.”Richard raised a hand slightly, stopping him from continuing. His gaze remained on the woman and child.“You broke protocol,” Richard said calmly.“Yes,” Rico replied at once. “I did.”The silence stretched between them. The Underground King of Apex was not a man many dared to disobey. His identity was known only to a handful of people across the world. Every meeting was planned. Every visitor was screened. No one entered his presence without notice and clearance and Rico knew this well. And yet
CHAPTER 15
Richard and Rico were still at the dark corner of the warehouse and deep in the midst of their conversation when Arianne walked up to them."We'll give you two some privacy," She smiled. Then turning to face Nicole, she added. "Let's go get some ice cream, love." The little girl clapped her hands in excitement and jumped off the chair. Rico watched them with a proud look on his face. He bent slightly and whispered something to Arianne, and she nodded in understanding. She took Nicole’s hand and walked out of the place without looking back. She knew this conversation was not meant for her and she wanted to respect that boundary. The moment the door closed behind them, the mood changed.Richard and Rico were finally alone. They sat facing each other, two men who had shared years of loyalty. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. It was not awkward. They had never needed many words between them.Rico broke the silence first.“I saw the news,” he said quietly. “About Michelle Donovan
CHAPTER 16
Chris Washington lay back against the silk-covered headboard of the luxury hotel suite, a glass of expensive whiskey resting loosely in his hand. The room smelled of alcohol and perfume and soft music played in the background. Floor-to-ceiling windows showed the glittering city below, a city he believed he owned through power, money, and fear. Isabella lay beside him, draped in white sheets, her hair spread out like a halo. Chris smirked and raised his glass. “To victory,” he said. “To finally crushing that bastard.” Isabella smiled and lifted her glass as well. “To Richard’s downfall,” she said, though something twisted in her chest as she spoke the words. They clinked glasses. Chris took a long drink. He felt powerful again. The humiliation at the gala still burned in his mind, but he had knew it was temporary. He laughed and pulled Isabella closer. “By morning,” he said confidently, “Richard Carter will be nothing but a body on the street. Michelle Donovan will crawl, GL
CHAPTER 17
CHAPTER 16Richard arrived home that evening with a steady pace. The long drive had given him time to think. The city lights faded behind him as the gates opened. The house stood quiet and warm, like it had been waiting for him. As soon as he stepped inside, soft voices greeted him.Michelle came first. She wiped her hands on a kitchen towel as she walked toward him. Her eyes lit up when she saw him. Marty followed right after her, running as fast as his little legs could carry him. He wrapped his arms around Richard’s legs without hesitation.“You’re home,” Michelle said. Her voice was gentle. There was relief in it.Richard nodded and placed a hand on Marty’s head. “I am,” he said.Marty looked up at him with wide eyes and a bright grin. “Daddy,” he said with excitement.Richard froze for half a second. The word still felt strange. It felt heavy and light at the same time. He looked at Michelle, unsure how she would react. Michelle’s lips parted slightly, but she said nothing. She o
CHAPTER 18
The next morning, Richard stood beside the car while Michelle adjusted Marty's small cap. Marty could barely stand still. He kept bouncing on his toes. His small backpack hung loosely on his shoulders. His eyes were full of excitement. “Daddy, let’s go!” Marty said for the tenth time. Richard closed the car door and looked down at him. “We are going,” he said calmly. Michelle shook her head with a soft smile. “He barely slept last night,” she said. “He kept talking about the rides.” Marty nodded proudly. “I will try everything.” Richard raised a brow slightly. “Everything?” “Yes. Everything,” Marty repeated with confidence. They got into the car and drove to the amusement park. The place was already crowded when they arrived. Laughter filled the air. Children ran around with balloons tied to their wrists. Music played from hidden speakers. The smell of popcorn and sweet candy floated through the breeze. Marty gasped as soon as they walked through the large gates. “Wow,” he wh
CHAPTER 19
A few minutes after Daniel had stormed away the first time, when Michelle had finally managed to steady her breathing and convince herself that the ugly interruption was over and that the rest of the day could still be saved for the sake of her son who was laughing loudly while trying to beat a racing game on Richard’s phone, the same man appeared again as if he had been waiting for the right moment to strike.Richard noticed him first.Daniel was walking toward them with slow and confident steps, his chin lifted high as though he owned the entire park, and this time there was no attempt to hide the sneer on his face.Richard was angry instantly. The earlier restraint he had shown began to fade, and a cold anger rose in his chest like a dark wave. In that moment, he felt an intense urge to put an end to the disturbance once and for all.Michelle saw the change in Richard’s posture and quickly touched his arm.“Please,” she whispered, her voice soft. “Let me handle this.”Richard looke
CHAPTER 20
A crowd gathered very quickly after Daniel fell to the ground.People gasped in surprise at the shocking scene that had just happened before their eyes, and many of them stopped walking, stopped talking, and stopped laughing as they turned their full attention toward the tall man who had just struck another man so hard that he had flown across the open space of the park like a rag doll. Some mothers quickly pulled their children closer to them. Some teenagers raised their phones and began recording. Some older men whispered among themselves and shook their heads. The once cheerful corner of the amusement park became tense and heavy within seconds.Richard’s jaw clenched tightly as he moved closer to the terrified man on the ground.Daniel had not expected that anyone would dare to hit him.He had always been the one who spoke loudly and boldly. He had always been the one who humiliated others. He had always been the one who left the scene feeling powerful. Most of all, he had never im
