CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE
At the time of two fifteen, Chen was in the penthouse. She brought two people from her team and a forensics kit and the unique sense of urgency for someone who had been hustling for three hours and was being careful not to make hasty decisions that could not be improved upon by time. She was brief with Robert and Roxanne. She looked at Dave. Her team set up a perimeter around the nursery, and Dave took her through the results of the security sweep. The door to the nursery was open.Robert was standing in the corridor to the outside. He hadn't been in since they had come home. He had been standing at the doorway in the corridor and had scanned through the door at the envelope on the floor and knew that he could not go in before Chen came in or it would ruined whatever was in the envelope, and he remained standing in the corridor.Roxanne was standing by his side.Clara was with the overnight caretaker in the living room. Far enough down the hallway to keep her clear of whatever this wa
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-TWO
On a Friday morning, Phillip met Carver for the final time.He had put him through the channel that they used and had told him it was over. Carver had indicated this and inquired about the rest of the material. Phillip had asked him to bring it.It was the third and final time that they met at the private club.Carver put an envelope on the table that was sealed. The DNA material within the envelope was that from the environs of Clara's transport route on a previous occasion three weeks ago when the protocol had intersected with a gap in the secondary vehicle coverage. Carver had not mentioned this to Phillip at the time because Phillip had already asked Carver to destroy it.It was not destroyed by Carver. He held it because he knew that the work that he had done over the last thirty years had taught him that material was always worth holding until it was sure that it was not needed anymore. He was certain now.He put the envelope on the table."The material is viable," Carver said.
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE
On a Monday morning Robert made a full security audit. He left the instructions with Claire at seven AM. Before most of the building was awake. Every access point. Every system. Every contractor relationship. All external connections to any Zenco infrastructure within the last eighteen months. At eight thirty, when Marcus came to his desk, he was at his desk, and he had the look of a man who had read the instructions and understood what they meant.“The access to the penthouse,” Marcus said. He sat down. “The duplicate lock, the service panel.”“Three months access to the building's maintenance systems," said Robert. “The contractor is in federal custody and was discovered yesterday evening by Chen's team while they were conducting their search in his home”. He looked at Marcus without letting go of his eyes. "But three months means three months of potential access to the penthouse. I need to know everything that was touched. Every system. Every room.""I will have Brighton lead it,"
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FOUR
They talked after Clara had fallen asleep.Roxanne had put her to bed and returned to the kitchen, where she made tea. Not because she wanted tea, because she needed something to do with her hands while she was putting together what she wanted to say.Robert was at the island. She put a cup in front of him.She was sitting opposite him.The kitchen was quiet. The city outside moved through its Monday evening. They did not say anything for some time. Then Roxanne said, "Ask me”Robert gazed upon her.He thought about the sentence written on the card.He thought about what asking it meant. About what it would do to the space between them if the question stayed in the room unasked. He thought about carrying things by himself. He thought about what he and Roxanne had constructed throughout all of their sincere discussions. He looked at her.“The dates," he said, "Whatever the sentence is talking about. Whatever Phillip's investigator found in the medical records.” He held her gaze. "Tell
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FIVE
Dave and Claire traced the executive network breach on a Wednesday morning.Since Chen's team had taken the contractor into custody, they have been working on the access log files for three days. A system level analysis is in progress by Dave. Claire administering access records. They're both searching for the same thing, but from different perspectives. They found it at the same time.It was in the system log for Dave. It was found by Claire in the administration registers. What one had suspected on his own, they discussed together at nine AM in Dave's office, and they were both correct.Service access panel. The duplicate lock. The bottom of the utility corridor is not covered by the camera. Carver's car was spotted three times at the times when the security was at its lowest. It was discovered the all of it was linked to an access point that was created during Zenco's restructuring. A time when some legacy system credentials were temporarily re-activated in order to enable the migr
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX
It was a Thursday afternoon when Agent Chen contacted Robert. He was at his house at the kitchen island. Clara was sitting in the chair. Roxanne was in the other room. The building was changed from what it was during the audit, and the restrictions and the atmosphere Marcus had described it and he felt he should be able to see at home, so he had taken the afternoon off from the office. Not far from the company. Simply home. Simply present. He answered.“Leonard Hayes,” Chen said.Robert waited.“He will no longer cooperate with the federal authorities,” she said. “It's not a staged reduction. He has refused the three communication sessions and he has sent words through his attorney that he will never meet again.”Robert gazed at Clara sitting in a chair.“What has happened, what has changed?” he asked.“It's the Phillip disclosure,” said Chen. “After forty eight hours, the info had spread to the masses through Leonard's network of inmates and he knew that Phillip has cooperated and th

An offer was made to Roxanne on a Tuesday morning. It arrived through her professional channel from an international brand partnership group in Paris. The group included some of the top luxury and lifestyle brands in both the European and Asian markets. Since Roxanne's summit speech they had been following her public profile. They had been reading the Patricia Osei coverage. They were aware of her independent recognition that was building up.They wished to create a joint brand under her name. Not under Zenco. Not under Robert's. Hers. She was reading the proposal from her desk. She read it twice. She put it down. She picked it up. She read the creative control section three times, because the creative control section was the one that would tell her whether or not the proposal was real in structure and that the language was independent. The creative control section was authentic. She thought about the idea for a long time. She didn't dial up Robert right away. She called Sandra first.

It was a Thursday afternoon and Phillip was alone in his lawyer's office. The disclosure had been on for two weeks. The lawyers had been working through the documentation thoroughly. The initial filing had been sent to federal prosecutors, who had requested additional materials in this case on three separate issues. The supplementary materials had been given. It was thorough.Phillip had done it on purpose. Not because carefulness resulted in laxness. As partial disclosure was the type of disclosure that caused further issues. After enough years in financial operations, he knew that not all cooperation is well-cooperation. The incomplete version was a wedge they used against you.He had provided for them absolutely all.The shell entities. The algorithm funding. The Harwood arrangement. A credential source that represents a legacy credential. Carver's complete area of operation. The beach surveillance. The person hired to work within the building. The two deaths in separate countries
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-NINE
Robert saw Roxanne in a different way at the dinner meeting. It was a Thursday evening. An event for investors and industry leaders involved in the growth of renewable infrastructure. Marcus had made it three weeks beforehand. The restaurant where Robert had previously eaten at for business dinners that demanded a perfect blend of great food and neutral ground.Around the table there are twelve people.Robert was at one end. Roxanne wasn't by his side. She had come from her own offices, and was seated in the middle of the table between two investors, whom she had known for many years, and a woman from the infrastructure committee who had asked to be introduced to Roxanne after reading her coverage of the summit.Robert had noted this when the seating arrangement was finalized. Roxanne is specifically and only being asked for. Not as an appendage to the evening. As a presence in her own right. At the time, he didn't think about it that much. The dinner went through the stages and was f
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY
On Wednesday evening Dave discovered the expansion. He was once again working late. The building quiet around him. The specific productive silence of a large space after seven PM when the noise of the day had disappeared and all that was left were the work.He was found in system logs. Not wanting to break any new ground. Verifying that the algorithm has been completely removed. Reviewing Carlisle's removal paperwork to be sure each process was terminated. He discovered something which was not documented.A residual process.Small. Operating every six hours. Generating output that were directed elsewhere, to an address which Carlisle had not identify during the initial removal sweep, but had only become active after the sweep.Dave viewed the remaining process. He looked at what it was monitoring. It was not monitoring Zenco's systems anymore. The algorithm that was central to the system had been taken out. All that was left was a single light process that was isolated from the main p
