Roxanne jingled the tiny bell on the dinner table, alerting Robert Jackson, her husband, of her impatience for him to bring the food.
Robert appeared with a tray in hand, dressed in a maids gown, solely chosen for him by his wife Roxanne,
“What took you so long?.” She scowled at him.
Robert muttered an apology as he dished out food for Roxanne and her two haughty friends.
Angela, one of Roxanne's friends with red hair, covered her mouth as she laughed to despise Robert's outfit.
“Oh Roxanne, you always know how to stir me up really well, I can't believe you gave him a maid's clothes to put on.”
They all laughed heartily as Robert finished serving, he stood to await more orders.
This has been his lot since the day he married Roxanne Murillo, last daughter of the Murillo family amongst five children.
Their marriage has gone for five years now, and Roxanne only looks at Robert with scorn, and as the years went by, her hatred for him only grew, he was an embarrassment to her and her family, as she could have married someone with a higher class, but she didn't. So she put him to work instead.
Roxanne was not satisfied with the house chores that Robert did, so she put him as a dispatch rider for her pizza place.
Everyday, after taking care of sweeping, washing, and all manners of house chores, Robert would make for the restaurant to begin his work as a delivery guy.
The stipends he made were still sent to Roxanne's personal account.
With the load of work, Robert was bound to return home to make lunch, and dinner in between for Roxanne and her mother.
On one occasion he was late due to workload at the pizza place, he received not only a scolding, but a hot slap on both cheeks.
Five years after being married, he grew accustomed to the maltreatment of Roxanne and her mother. The painful part was his growing affection for Roxanne.
Originally, Robert Jackson came from a very influential home, the family behind Zenco enterprise, before he got married to Roxanne, he invested almost all of his inheritance in buying an oil field, which was speculated to generate oil that would last more than three centuries.
The rest of his inheritance he invested in a company that buys out other companies on the brink of breakdown
Contrary to what he expected, the fields generated nothing, and the workers he hired deserted him after a while. He was left penniless, as a result of his drastic decision, the family came together and expelled him completely from the family's genealogy.
Everyone he knew departed him, even those he called his closest friends. To survive, he became the son-in-law to the Murillo family.
“Hmmm,” Angela reacted to the taste of the food.
“This is so good, Roxanne, you have to tell Robert to come make me some of this in my house.”
“Of course he will come cook for you, he is totally useless to me after all, would you like to know the secret behind his great cooking?” Roxanne asked her girls.
They all nodded eagerly.
“I tell him to dress the part for whatever work he is doing, hence the maid in chef's clothing.”
Angela clapped her hands, multiple times,
“Wow, I am surprised, then he must dress this way when cooking in my house, so the charm can also work.”
They all giggled before Roxanne fell quiet, her face hinting at sudden sadness, she picked at her food.
“Girls, I am worried, my company is experiencing a downfall, if I don't get a huge investment soon, I'll be forced to sell it out, leaving me to just the pizza place.”
Roxanne's food production company was built by her father, Daniel Murillo, he named it after his only child., and passed it down to her after
Angela, and Bridget the other friend rubbed Roxanne's hand to give comfort.
“That is actually a lot of money Roxanne, no one would just invest in your company out of the blues.”
Roxanne opened her mouth to answer, then she noticed Robert standing close by, he was obviously listening to their conversation.
“Don’t you have toilets to wash?,” she shouted at him.
“Get going before I set my anger on you.”
Robert bowed before leaving, as was expected of him to do anytime he leaves her presence.
He went straight for the cleaning supplies in the storage room, the only thing he didn't get were gloves.
He had been forbidden to use gloves when washing her toilet, Roxanne complained that with gloves on it was never neat.
As he opened the toilet door in her room, his phone buzzed, he brought it out, and read through, his eyes widening as he reached the end of the message.
The toilet equipment dropped on the ground, breaking the bleach bottle, including the bucket.
It turned out that one of the men he hired to work the drill on the oil field went to take a look again, the man just got a hunch to work on the machine again, surprisingly oil was found. The man quickly sent Robert the message of his latest discovery.
Robert gave a loud shout.
“Yes, yes, I am rich. Woooooh!”
With the oil from that field he can never get broke even when he dies.
Robert could not contain his excitement as he continued shouting at the top of his voice doing a dance.
The noise attracted Roxanne, she made her way to the room, one look at Robert dancing and the spilled bleach on the floor, she concluded that Robert was mad.
“What is the meaning of this?Have you lost it already?”
Robert let his excitement get the better of him.
“I am rich, you don't have to worry about selling out your company. I'll invest for you my dear wife.”
Roberts happiness only intensified Roxanne's anger,
“You are really mad, I'll have to call the police to come lock you up.”
Immediately, Robert did the one thing he had never dared to do since he married Roxanne, he grabbed her in his hands, and did a spin.

CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY-TWO
On Tuesday morning, Robert appeared before the international economic committee. The committee room was a big formal room, as is the case with international institutional spaces. Wood panelling. A long raised table at which the Committee members were seated facing the witness. Three international news organizations cameras. Four of the seven Committee members wore earphones for simultaneous translation.Robert sat at the witness position alone. He had refused to let counsel be with him. He had refused to accept a draft and a rewritten version of his statement by his staff. He didn't accept briefing papers he had prepared with answers to questions he expected to be asked. He only had water to drink. The meeting was called to order by the committee chair. She was Belgian. Seventy years old. The kind of person who'd spent decades asking tough questions in official settings and wasn't about to be impressed by formality or status. She expressed her gratitude to Robert for coming. She put h

This was Carver's second meeting with Phillip, who met him on a Friday evening. The same private club. The same room. However, the meeting was not the same as the first one. Carver had requested that they engage in it specifically through the channel that they had used and had stated that the subject was important and needed to be discussed face-to-face. Those three words had been read by Phillip and he knew that Carver had discovered something. He didn't anticipate the butterflies in his stomach. He had been in rooms where there was a lot of information. He had served a long career in financial operations where the important information was the currency and the receiving of it in the neutral act. You heard what you heard, you used what you could use.He was seated across from Carver.Carver regarded him as he had regarded him the previous time. The evaluation of a person who was going to make a decision as he was looking at it before arriving. He laid a folder down on the table. He d
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY
Agent Chen visited Dave on a Tuesday morning. She had never come to the office before. All previous messages had been sent by secure communication or in private meetings on locations with special neutrality. The office wasn't neutral. The office was visible. When she came to the office, she had decided that the need for what she was bringing was more important than the visibility of the channel. She was met in the lobby by Dave and escorted to the small conference room on the second floor which was not part of the executive floor, and had no window overlooking the main floor atrium. He had selected it ahead of her because if anyone was observing the construction the little conference room would not result in a visible meeting between Dave Morrison and a federal agent.Chen sat down. She did not open a folder or produce documents. She had brought nothing with her that could be observed or photographed."I am not here officially," she said.“Yeah, I get that,” Dave said."Somebody’s bee
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND NINETEEN
At two AM on Thursday, Robert was in Clara's room.Roxanne found him there. She had woken at one fifty, stretched out toward him in the darkness and found that the bed space beside her was empty, with the particular coldness of sheets that had been empty for some time. She lay silent awhile. She listened. The air in the penthouse was silent. Not the alarming quiet. The ordinary quiet of a building at two AM.She got up.She went and found him in Clara's room standing next to the cot.He wasn't doing anything. Not adjusting Clara's blanket. Not responding to a sound. Simply standing. Having a glimpse of Clara as he looked at her sometimes in these hours. The total focus of the person who has discovered something to observe and is actively observing it.Clara was asleep. The small quiet breathing of a sleeping child. Perfectly safe and perfectly sound.Roxanne stood in the doorway for a moment. She watched the man who was watching Clara. This she had seen before. Not once or twice. Regu

Robert received the invitation on a Monday morning.A formal letter on headed paper from the secretariat of an international economic committee convening in three months. The committee was reviewing the effects of wealth concentration and corporate governance and the responsibility of large-scale businesses to the communities they served. They were calling a small group of business leaders to testify. The invitation described Robert as someone who is very well known in the public arena, for whom the employee ownership movement and his track record of community investment are very relevant to the work the committee is doing. He took the letter to his desk to read. He put it down. He went to window. He returned and read it once again. It was his instinct that first came into him, as it had with the Patricia Osei profile. To decline. To help keep the particular privacy he had found so helpful in many years of understanding that visibility created vulnerability. He had not declined the Os

The doctor was located by Phillip's investigator on a Tuesday.Carver had been working backward through the records. From his limited access to the hospital's secondary system, as well as the names of the individual practitioners listed within that system. The majority of the names were common. General practitioners. Hospital staff. Expected rotations of routine care providers.A single name came up and then disappeared.A specialist. Connected to a private clinic that had since been closed. He specialist's professional registration had lapsed three years after the clinic closed. He had not practiced publicly since. It took four days for Carver to find him.He lived in a seaside town, eight hours away from the city. Not hiding exactly. Simply distant.
