CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
At a quarter to ten AM, Loretta came in. Early, actually. At nine-fifty Robert found her waiting in the lobby. He made her wait until ten-fifteen. Power move. Small, but effective.Robert met her at the elevator, and greeted her, arms outstretched, “Ms. Lynn.”"Mr. Jackson. Thank you for seeing me." Loretta said nervously. They rode up in silence. Loretta kept fidgeting with her portfolio. Nervous excitement coming out of her.Robert was in his office pointing to a chair. "Sit."Loretta sat carefully. Smoothed her skirt. Waited.Robert made no immediate reply. Let the silence stretch. Uncomfortable. Heavy."Tell me why I should hire you." He finally said."Because I'm good at what I do." Loretta said. “I have eight years of experience in modeling. Major campaigns. International exposure. I will be able to add credibility to the brand of Zenco.”"That's what you said last time." Robert said. “Why should I trust you? I would like to know.”Loretta took a breath. "You shouldn't. I don't
CHAPTER TWENTY TWO
At two PM, Robert came to the hospital. Precisely on time.Eleanor met him in the lobby and she looked exhausted. Aged ten years in a week."Thank you for coming." She hugged him. Robert stood stiffly. Didn't return it."How is he?" Robert asked."Physically stable. Emotionally fragile." Eleanor said quietly. “Well, doctor says he is all right. But he's deeply depressed.""He should be." Without sympathy Robert said.Eleanor flinched. "Robert, I know you're angry"“This does not even look like being angry.” Robert interrupted. They were riding the elevator quietly. The room of Phillip was in the fourth floor. Private room. Expensive.Robert wondered if Phillip was paying for it with stolen money.Eleanor opened the door very gently. "Phillip? Robert's here."Phillip was sitting up in bed. He looked terrible. Pale. Thin. Hollowed out."Robert." The voice of Phillips was a mere whisper."Uncle." Robert stayed near the door. Didn't sit.Eleanor touched Robert's arm. "I'll give you privac
CHAPTER TWENTY THREE
The following morning Robert came to Zenco and he was met by Gerald Hutchins at the lobby. With two lawyers beside him in costly clothes.Security stood nearby. Watching carefully."Mr. Jackson." Gerald rose as Robert came in. "We need to talk.""We have nothing to discuss." Robert passed by him and went to the elevator."I think we do." Gerald followed. His lawyers right behind. "Especially regarding your baseless lawsuit."Robert stopped. Turned slowly. "Baseless? You threatened me. Multiple times.""I expressed frustration." Gerald corrected. "There's a difference.""Then why are you here?" Robert asked."To offer a deal." Gerald said. "Drop the lawsuit then I withdraw my defamation countersuit.”Robert laughed. "Defamation? You embezzled millions. I exposed you. That's truth."“You have ruined my reputation without a trial.” Gerald's face reddened. "I lost everything."“You lost all your things because you are a thief.” Robert said coldly. One of Gerald's lawyers stepped forward.
CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
Robert woke to his phone ringing. Seven AM. Roxanne calling again. He'd blocked her number twice. She continued to use various phones. He answered. "What?""Please. Just meet me. One time." Roxanne's voice was hoarse."I've heard you out." Robert said tiredly."Not really. You've dismissed me." Roxanne said. "I need you to really listen."Robert sighed. "Fine. One meeting.""Thank you." Roxanne sounded relieved. "When?""Today. Noon. Neutral location." Robert said."Where?" Roxanne asked."Riverside Park. The bench by the fountain." Robert said. "If you're late, I'm leaving.""I'll be there." Roxanne promised.Robert hung up. Immediately regretted it.In the morning he was at Zenco going through contracts. Dave came by with coffee."You look tired." Dave observed."I am." Robert admitted."Roxanne?" Dave guessed."And Sandra. And Gerald. Everything." Robert said."Want me to come to the meeting?" Dave offered."No. This is something I need to do alone.” Robert said.Robert pulled up t
CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE
Robert had spent the weekend in preparation. He reviewed every document. Every contract. Every piece of evidence.Marcus worked alongside him. They constructed an ironclad fortification."They're going to claim mental instability." Marcus explained. "Say the pressure made you unfit to lead.""That's ridiculous." Robert said."Doesn't matter if it's true what matters is if they can convince people." Marcus said.Robert's phone rang. Dave calling."I heard about Monday." Dave said. "Patricia called me. Tried to get me on their side."Robert's jaw clenched. "What did you say?""I told her to go to hell." Dave said firmly. "I'm with you. Always.""I need you there on Monday." Robert said. "I need your vote.""I'll be there." Dave promised.Robert was not able to sleep on Sunday night. He paced his hotel room. Reviewed notes. At two AM, his phone buzzed. Roxanne texting."I know about tomorrow. About my mother's plan. I'm so sorry."Robert stared at the message. Didn't respond.Another tex
CHAPTER TWENTY SIX
Two weeks later Sandra had left in a dramatic way, Loretta went to the office of Robert and made an offer."The publicity photos are ready." She said, sliding a folder across his desk. "The marketing team wants to release them next week."Robert opened it. Professional photos. Loretta in elegant dresses. Zenco products prominently displayed. She looked stunning."These are good." Robert said. "Approve them.""There's something else." Loretta hesitated. "They want to do a lifestyle piece. Me talking about working with you. Maybe some candid shots of us together."Robert looked up. "Together? Like what?""Lunch meetings. Corporate events. Nothing inappropriate." Loretta said quickly. "But it would generate buzz. Make people talk about Zenco in a positive way.”Robert considered it. Positive publicity would assist in regaining investor confidence. And if Roxanne saw photos of him with Loretta..."Fine." Robert said. "Set it up."The images were published the next Monday. They were initia
CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
Robert stayed at the hospital overnight. Uncomfortable chair. Harsh fluorescent lights. But he didn't leave.Roxanne woke several times. Each time, she seemed surprised he was still there. The next morning her face had regained its color. The IV was doing its job.A nurse brought breakfast. Oatmeal. Toast. Orange juice."Eat." Robert said firmly when Roxanne pushed it away."I'm not hungry." Roxanne protested weakly."I don't care." Robert said. "Eat anyway."Roxanne looked at the oatmeal. Managed a few bites. Robert counted it as a victory. His phone buzzed. Marcus Webb calling."I need to take this." Robert said. "I'll be right outside."In the hallway, he answered. "What's up, Marcus?""We have a problem." Marcus said. “Maxime Rodrigo has brought a suit against you.”Robert's jaw clenched. "For what?""Defamation. Harassment. Tortious interference with business relationships." Marcus listed. "He's claiming you deliberately destroyed his career.""I did." Robert said bluntly."Well,
CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
Margaret appeared in the office of Robert a week after Maxime was arrested with something strange to tell him."Someone's been buying Zenco shares." She said, spreading documents on his desk. "Quietly. Through multiple shell companies."Robert frowned. "How many shares?""Almost fifteen percent." Margaret said. "Another five percent and they'll have enough to demand a board seat.""Who is it?" Robert asked."That's the problem." Margaret said. “The shell companies are registered in the Cayman Islands. Very difficult to trace."Robert called Marcus immediately. "I need you to investigate something."Marcus worked for three days. Finally called Robert back."I found your mysterious investor." Marcus said. "You're not going to like it.""Who?" Robert demanded."Victor Chen." Marcus said. "Owner of Chen Industries. Your biggest competitor."Robert's jaw clenched. Victor Chen. Ruthless businessman. Known for hostile takeovers."He's trying to take over Zenco." Robert said."Looks that way.
CHAPTER TWENTY NINE
Two weeks after signing the deal with Victor Chen, Robert received an unexpected call from Margaret."Roxanne's company is in trouble." Margaret said without preamble. "Big trouble."Robert's stomach tightened. "What kind of trouble?""Financial. Her investors are withdrawing. The suppliers insist on advance payment. She's hemorrhaging money." Margaret explained. “Word is that she has a couple of months before she goes bankrupt.”"How do you know this?" Robert asked.“One of her board members got in touch with me.” Margaret said. "Asking if Zenco would be interested in acquiring her company."Robert was quiet. Food production company of Roxanne. Her father's legacy. The thing she valued most."What's it worth?" Robert asked."In its current state? Maybe twenty million." Margaret said. “But with a good reorganization, would be worth sixty. Maybe eighty.""Send me the financials." Robert said.Robert hung up and stared through his window in the office. The city sprawled below. Gray. Col
CHAPTER THIRTY
The Monday morning began as usual. Robert reviewed reports. Approved contracts. Managed his empire. Then at ten AM his receptionist buzzed. "Mr. Jackson, there's a man here to see you. Says it's urgent. His name is Thomas Whitmore."Robert frowned. The name was well known yet he could not put his finger on it."Does he have an appointment?" Robert asked."No, sir. But he says you'll want to hear what he has to say. Something about your oil fields."Robert's stomach dropped. "Send him in."A man entered. Late forties. Expensive suit. Confident stride."Mr. Jackson." The man extended his hand. "Thomas Whitmore. We have known each other about six years or so.”Robert shook his hand. Still trying to remember. "I'm sorry, I don't recall.""That's understandable." Thomas sat without being told to. “It happened during an investment conference. You were pitching your oil field project.”Memory flickered. Robert remembered vaguely the conference. Hundreds of possible investors."Okay." Robert
