CHAPTER ONE
Ansel gripped onto his phone tightly, desperation filled his lungs with a deadly venom, making it hard for him to swallow. He knew he shouldn't do such a thing but what else could he do when he had no other choice? So he took his chances and called his wife for help. The phone rang for a while, like she had purposely delayed answering the call. Finally, he heard the call connect and he sprung to his feet. "Hello Lara Jane?" He heard a scoff from the other side of the phone. "How many times do I have to tell you not to call my sister's name like that? You should have some regard for the name that is valued more than your entire lineage!" The man's voice was stern as he spoke, laced with so much hatred that Ansel could feel it pouring out of the phone. He didn't need any introduction to know that it was his brother in law, Jeremiah, who had answered his wife's call. Jeremiah was the one who tolerated him the least in the entire Cree family. He didn't even tolerate him at all a
CHAPTER TWO
All the way there, Ansel kept thinking about how to get himself into the event. He tried calling his wife again but the call kept getting declined. Jeremiah was still with her phone no doubt. But he could not turn back. When he arrived at the Cree mansion, security blocked his path. The broad chest man placed a hand in front of Ansel and spoke in a gruff tone. "Where do you think you are going? Were you invited to the event?" Ansel kept his tone cool. "I'm family, i don't need an invite." The other security man recognised him immediately. "Aren't you the family's useless son in law? Weren't you ordered to stay away from this mansion? Are you planning on spoiling the special day?" Ansel immediately spoke up, denying such claims. "Of course not! I'm just here for my wife, her number isn't going through and I'm worried." "Worried? You should know you are not wanted when you can't reach her. She's probably in there enjoying herself with Mr Paul Bryant so just stay away." "Pa
CHAPTER THREE
A scoffed laugh came from one of the others in the hall and a beautiful young lady– though not as beautiful as Lara Jane but shared the same lengthy brown hair as her– walked forward towards Lara Jane and Ansel. She stood with her hands rested on her hips as she spoke. “Why must your filthy husband always go around embarrassing our family like this? Can't he have a little self-respect?” Her name was Rachel Cree, Lara Jane’s younger sister. A scowl sat on her face as she spoke. “Fight with the security on grandma's birthday? Certainly that can't be forgiven.” “That's right!” Rachel's fiancé, a handsome young man, stepped into the light. His name was Austin Royal. “We are the oldest grandsons of the Cree family, we should at least hold up a little self-respect if nothing at all. Don't you have any shame at all?” His brow arched. Austin was more irritated by Ansel's presence than anyone else in the entire room. He was sure he hated him more than anyone in the entire city. Austi
CHAPTER FOUR
Lara Jane swallowed hard and locked eyes with her grandmother. “I appreciate the gesture behind your words but I cannot leave my husband. I will never leave my husband for anyone else.” Grandma Cree roared like an angry dragon. “How dare you be so ungrateful?! After everything I do for you, you cannot do this much for the family? I can't stand this anymore. Send that useless boy out of my party.” “I'll see myself out then.” Ansel said before giving the woman a deep bow. He might not have anything but he had his pride as a human being at least and he would not let himself be disgraced. “I'll come with you.” Lara Jane offered, already going after him without even thinking twice. “Stop right there!” Grandma Cree roared and LJ stopped in her tracks. “If you take one more step Lara Jane, consider yourself no more a part of the Cree family. I will not only kick you out but your entire family can go with you as well.” “Grandma,” “Stay.” Ansel cut his wife off. He gave her a weak s
CHAPTER FIVE
Ansel's eyes searched for the man as he felt as if he knew him. He stared at him. Those dark brown eyes seemed to overflow with distant memories in his head and the young and full of energy smile despite his wrinkles from old age on the man's face was all too familiar. Like a spark, the man's identity returned to him. “You are Carlos, aren't you?” Hearing Ansel's correct guess, the man's smile broadened. “Yes! Yes I am!" He beamed so excitedly that it was almost blinding. "I really can't believe that you still remember me, how wonderful!” He exclaimed, not even trying to hide his excitement as it was written all over his slightly wrinkled face. Carlos was a man in his late sixties but was always neatly dressed. Most people even believed he was a lot younger than he claimed. A fine black suit stood firmly against his healthy body, and he held a black walking stick with a golden round head on the top. He had worked as a butler for Ansel's family for over three decades. Ansel gru
CHAPTER SIX
Ansel's ears pricked at the mention of such an amount. It felt like he had never heard of such money before. He suddenly lost his grip on the card as it fell flat to the ground. His mind fell blank for only a second. “Thir– thirty million dollars?” Carlos had already picked up the card before Ansel blinked back to reality, and he handed it back to him. “Billion young master, thirty billion dollars.” “Thirty billion dollars?!” Ansel exclaimed. His eyes widened, and his expression contorted with shock. It felt impossible for one person to have such an amount of money for himself. He was too young to understand the worth of money when he still lived with his grandfather. He only knew the man had plenty of money then. He had never imagined that the old man was that rich. Did that mean his grandfather was a trillionaire? Yet, Ansel told himself not to be touched or impressed by his grandfather's act of kindness. After all, he could have shown some kindness those years back and
CHAPTER SEVEN
Ansel got home lost in thought. He still found it very hard to believe that he was now the richest man in the entire city. He couldn't help but to wonder if life was as easy as that for some people out there. He didn't know if he should be grateful for the sudden abundant blessing. The house was more unsettled than his mind. Lara Jane and her family lived away from the Cree family mansion because of Ansel. Since her grandfather had died, she and her family got kicked out of the mansion because they didn't want to see Ansel. Lara Jane didn't have a problem with him, but it was more reason for her parents to hate her husband. They hated the fact that they lived apart in a small apartment like they were not millionaires but just a normal family. Lara Jane was caught up in a heated argument with her parents and, as every other time, it was Ansel's matter. “Tell me what exactly it is that you are trying to pull here! Huh! Can't you read in between the lines? We might lose it all
CHAPTER EIGHT
He knew his in-laws were all after money, and they would suck up the richest amongst her suitors– which was why they were all so desperate to have his wife marry Paul Bryant. He took a deep sigh and made up his mind that he would still keep quiet about his true identity for now. Who knew what kind of plans his family had for him? If he went ahead and spilled everything out, then it happened to fall through, it would be too much of a disgrace for him. Plus, he was still thinking about his grandfather's gifts for him, and he was not sure if he would accept it just yet. Ella scoffed and planted her hand on her hips. "Am I not talking to a human being here?!" She barked angrily. "What is this?" She pushed his chest, making him stagger backwards. "A brick wall??!" He bowed his head deeply. “Mother, Father, I want to apologize to you for what I did today. It was out of desperation. Normally, I would never react like that. Please, I hope you can understand.” Ella let out a scornfu
CHAPTER NINE
Ansel could not bring himself to fall asleep all through the night. He kept thinking about his wife's words and the fact that he had the power in his hand. He listened to the rhythmic breathing of his wife as she slept, and it only made him think more about the step to take. The sun brushed against his face, caressing his skin softly and he opened his eyes. He had dozed off only a moment ago and now his wife was nowhere to be found. He quickly freshened up and went to check for her in the living room. He saw his mother-in-law and father-in-law in the living room. Tim and Ella were busy watching their favorite early morning show. Ella sliced up some apples for them as snacks. "Good morning mum, good morning dad." Ansel greeted both of them, knowing well that they would not respond. Just as he had expected, he was met with their silence. Ella chewed on a slice of apple and let out a soft laugh at the show she was watching. He didn't press further about the issue and just w
CHAPTER TEN
By the time Ansel got back home, his wife was already home. Thankfully, her parents weren't around. "How was it?" He asked her, even knowing he knew she would be accepted. She smiled and affirmed his thoughts. "I was accepted." She said meekly. He didn't understand the reason she sounded so dull even though she was accepted. But he decided it was probably stress, and she was overwhelmed by relief. "Let me treat you to something good, like I promised." She suddenly grabbed his hand to stop him. "Let's just..." She seemed hesitant. "Let's go to the bedroom." Her words took him by surprise. His eyes widened. He allowed himself to be pulled along as they went up the stairs and into their shared bedroom. She sat him down on the bed and smiled. "I have something to give you." He didn't ask what it was, he just waited for her to give it to him. But what happened next was something he couldn't believe. She undressed herself and stood nakedly in front of him. Ansel was tongue-tied.
