Chapter 181: Winter is coming:
“Not yet. But you will.” Williams leaned forward. “I have been studying the clover bloodline for thirty years. I know how the thirteen bonds fit together, how each one balances the others. The golden clover is the keystone. It binds the twelve lesser powers into a single harmonious whole. When it is properly mastered, it can reinforce any ward, any barrier, any defense.”“Then I could strengthen the river’s judgment?”“With enough training, yes. You could turn this entire island into a fortress that no army in the realm could breach.”“How long would that take?” Cael Dross asked.“Months. Perhaps years, to master completely. But we do not need mastery. We only need enough control to make a difference.” Williams looked around the table. “That is why I will begin training immediately.”“Immediately?” Sablen asked. “You have only just arrived.”“Time is short. Darius knows where we are. Elvyn knows what the boy can do. Every day we waste is a day they spend preparing.” Williams’s voice g
Chapter 182: The Mercy of Melissa:
Now back at the Valley of Melissa, the valley held its breath.Elvyn knelt on the cold, bone-strewn ground with her hands clasped before her and blood drying on the side of her face. She did not look like the First Voice of the Hand’s inner circle. She looked like a girl of twelve standing on a riverbank, watching the water take the only people she had ever loved.Above her, Melissa held the soldier by the throat, and his boots kicked weakly against the air.“Melissa,” Elvyn said again, softer this time, because shouting had only made the grey fingers tighten. “Look at him. Look at his face. He is barely twenty. He is a frightened boy who said a stupid thing because his mind broke under the weight of this place. You have seen men break before. You know what it looks like.”“I know exactly what it looks like,” Melissa said, without turning her head. Her voice was low, almost conversational. “It looks like a man deciding that what I am is funny.”“He did not decide anything. He panicked
Chapter 183: I have a daughter... Please...
“And am I not?”“You are my sister,” Elvyn whispered. “You are the girl who jumped into boiling water to hold our mother’s hand. That girl is still in there somewhere. I know she is.”Something dark and tired flickered across Melissa’s thin face. Her grip, still locked around Tavish’s throat, loosened by a hair’s breadth. It was enough. Tavish drew a thin, ragged breath, and a single, hoarse sound escaped him, more a croak than a word.“D-daughter.”Melissa’s eyebrow rose a fraction. “What?”“I— have— a daughter,” the boy rasped, his lips cracked and bloodless. Tears streamed from his bulging eyes, running into his ears. “Four years old. Her name— Lenna. I was joking. I did not— did not mean— I am sorry. I am so sorry, Sorceress.”The silence stretched taut.“Lenna,” Melissa repeated, in a strange, flat tone. “A four-year-old daughter.”“Yes.”“And you stand in my valley, in front of my tiger, and make jokes about selling your own mother.”“I was afraid,” Tavish gasped. “I am still af
Chapter 184: The doors within the valley:
Tavish scrambled away on his hands and knees, half-crawling, half-staggering toward the cart, where two of the other soldiers grabbed him by the arms and dragged him into the shelter of the strongboxes. He collapsed against a wheel and curled in on himself, shaking so hard that his teeth chattered audibly.Melissa turned slowly to face the rest of the soldiers. Her gaze moved along the line of white, frightened faces, and every man she looked at dropped his eyes to the ground.“Does anyone else have something to say?” she asked.Nobody answered.“Wise.” She clasped her hands loosely in front of her. “Now. It is nearly dusk, and the valley grows dangerous after dark. Wardens, which I will explain, patrol the paths between sunset and dawn. They do not distinguish between guests and trespassers, and I would rather not spend my evening scraping your remains off the stones.”A few of the men flinched.“You will come inside,” Melissa said. “All of you. There is food, and fire, and beds. You
Chapter 185: The Sorcereress's gold vault:
“Time,” Melissa said. “And patience. And a great many people who thought they could cheat a woman who lives alone in a valley full of the dead.”She walked slowly along the edge of the nearest hill of gold, trailing her fingers through the coins, and her face took on a distant, almost dreamy expression.“This crown,” she said, pausing beside a heap of jeweled circlets, “belonged to the Duke of Harrowmere. He hired me to break a curse on his firstborn son. When the curse was lifted, he decided my fee was excessive and sent forty men to kill me.” Her mouth curved faintly. “The wardens found them in the morning. The Duke sent the crown as an apology a week later, with his deepest regrets.”The soldiers stared.“This sword,” she went on, tapping a slim, jeweled blade lying across a pile of silver ingots, “was the property of General Voren of the Western Legion. He sought my aid in lifting a siege. I broke the siege, and he refused to pay. He is buried in the north corridor, with his men.”
Chapter 186: A fifth Clover Mage:
“Come,” she said. “I smell dinner.”She led them back up the passage and into another chamber, a large, warm dining hall lit by a great stone hearth in which a fire of silvery wood crackled merrily. A long table of dark wood ran down the middle of the room, set with plates, goblets, and bowls of steaming food. Roasted meats lay on silver trays. Loaves of bread, still warm, filled baskets. Pitchers of wine and water stood at intervals along the table.“Who prepared this?” Elvyn asked, startled. “I thought you lived alone.”“I do.” Melissa walked to the head of the table and sat, her tattered gown pooling around her. “The wardens cook. They are very skilled.”The soldiers froze in the doorway, staring at the food, then at their hostess, then at the empty chairs. Nobody moved.“Sit,” Melissa said. They sat, as carefully as men lowering themselves onto a bed of nails. Brannock took a chair near the foot of the table, as far from Melissa as the room allowed. Tavish, still pale and clutchin
Chapter 187: The Rider's creed:
“Perhaps more than that. I do not know.” Elvyn shivered. “But when he looked at me, I saw nothing human in his eyes. Only fire. I thought I was going to die.”“And yet you are here.”“Because his friend woke up at the last second and called him back.” Elvyn laughed bitterly. “A girl with a hole in her side and a stolen mantle saved my life. Think of that.”“A stolen mantle?”“The Widow’s Mantle, if the old brothers are to be believed. It healed her enough to speak.” Elvyn shook her head. “They are not ordinary opponents, sister. Two old masters of the Verdant Watch, guarding a vault full of relics, and a boy with a power I cannot begin to counter. If Lord Darius wishes to kill that boy, he will need more than gold.”“That is why I am going,” Melissa said calmly. “I want to see this boy. And I want to see the thing he carries.”“The Binding Shard?”“Among other things.” Her eyes gleamed. “I have been studying the clover bloodline for twenty years, Elvyn. I have read every record, decip
Chapter 188: We ride at dawn.... To the Capital...
“I was a child.”“So was I.” Elvyn’s voice was soft. “I used to think about that after the river. About how we were going to build a house in the sky. I used to lie awake in the Hand’s barracks and imagine you were still up there, waiting for me.”“I was not waiting.”“I know.” Elvyn rubbed her eyes. “I know you were not. I am only saying that I thought of it.”Melissa was silent for a very long time. When she finally spoke, her voice had changed. It was lower, rougher, stripped of its cold precision.“I thought of you too,” she said. “In the early years. I used to climb the highest tower of this house and stare south, toward the capital. I told myself I was looking for enemies.”“Were you?”“No.”Elvyn reached across the table, slowly, and laid her hand over her sister’s. Melissa did not pull away. Her fingers were cold and thin, but they did not flinch.“I am sorry,” Elvyn whispered. “I have been sorry every day for eleven years.”“I know.” Melissa’s voice was barely audible. “That
Chapter 189:The Island of Lost Souls:
Harlan did not move. He stood with his cheek burning, his boots barely touching the stone, and Melissa’s cold grey eyes held his own so steadily that he forgot, for a moment, the first rule entirely. Then he remembered, and his gaze skittered down to the floor.“I am sorry, Sorceress,” he whispered. “I did not mean to question you.”“You did not question me,” Melissa said. “You corrected me. There is a difference, and I dislike both.”“It will not happen again.”“No.” She released his tunic, and he dropped to his heels with a stumble. “It will not.”The corridor was utterly silent. The soldiers had frozen in various stages of dressing. Doran had one boot on and the other clutched to his chest. Brannock stood with his sword half-drawn and his face set like stone, trying not to look at anyone. Tavish, who had been bruised the evening before, had both hands pressed protectively to his throat.“You have until the sun clears the eastern ridge,” Melissa said, in the same flat, cold voice. “
Chapter 190: The secret plot to kill Thorne:
Melissa emerged from the tower and walked across the bone-strewn ground toward the mare, her gown sweeping the bones aside as though they were afraid to touch it. She paused beside her horse, laid a hand briefly on its muzzle, and murmured something too soft for anyone to hear. The mare lowered its head and nuzzled her palm.“Mount,” she said, not turning around. The soldiers swung up, saddles creaking. Elvyn mounted the grey she had ridden the day before, wincing as the movement strained her ribs. Melissa swung gracefully onto the gaunt mare, adjusted her staff across her saddlebow, and glanced back at the tower.“Nalia,” she called. The great tigress padded out of the iron door, her striped flanks gleaming in the green light, her golden eyes fixed on her mistress. She walked up to the mare, rubbed her enormous head against Melissa’s boot, and let out a deep, rumbling purr.“Not this time, my beauty,” Melissa murmured. “You stay. Guard the house.”The tiger blinked slowly, lowered he
