Chapter 191: The ways of the ancient mountains:
“I have a wife and three children,” Harlan said. “I will not be that stupid again.”“Nor will I.” Tavish pressed his fingers gently to his neck. “I used to think I was brave. A soldier of Lord Darius’s household guard. Fearless. Invincible. Then I met that woman.”“And?”“And I learned that I am an extremely cowardly man who loves his daughter.” He shook his head. “It is a humbling lesson.”“It is an honest one.”“It is the only kind that matters.”They rode in silence for a while after that. The sun rose slowly over the moors, a pale gold disc smothered in cloud, and the light turned the heather the color of old brass. A few crows wheeled overhead, cawing softly. At the head of the column, Elvyn urged her mare forward until she rode alongside her sister. Melissa did not glance at her.“You have been quiet,” Elvyn said.“I am always quiet.”“You were not always.”“No.” Melissa’s mouth twitched. “I was a very talkative child.”“You never stopped.”“I told stories. About dragons.”“I re
Chapter 192: Tiger Tooth:
“That she likes you, a little.” Elvyn plucked a blade of grass and twirled it between her fingers. “Do not mistake this for affection. She simply does not wish to kill you today. It is a start.”The soldiers exchanged glances. Tavish, who had been listening with wide, wary eyes, cleared his throat.“My lady,” he said hoarsely. “May I ask you something?”“You may.”“The things she said last night. About your parents. The river.” He hesitated. “Is it true? That she jumped in the boiling water?”Elvyn’s smile vanished. She stared at the blade of grass in her fingers for a long moment. “Yes,” she said quietly. “It is true.”“She must have been very brave.”“She was ten years old. She did not think. She simply went.”“And you?”“I stood on the bank.” Her voice was very low. “I have been standing there ever since.”Nobody spoke. The wind stirred the grass. A short distance away, Melissa turned her head slightly, as though listening, then turned back to the horizon.“I should not have asked,
Chapter 193: The Flaming hearts:
The soldiers dismounted hurriedly, tethered the horses to a stand of scrub oak, and followed in a ragged line, their boots squelching in the damp grass. The mist closed around them as they descended into the hollow, thick and cold and faintly luminous, and the temperature dropped sharply. Breath steamed from every mouth. Doran shivered violently and clamped his jaws to stop his teeth from chattering. The ground began to slope downward more steeply, and the grass gave way to a spongy, pale moss that muffled their footsteps entirely. The mist glowed brighter ahead, a soft, silvery radiance that seemed to pulse slowly, like breathing. Ahead, shapes began to resolve out of the haze, tall, thin, wavering, standing in a ring around some central point. They looked like trees, but as the soldiers drew closer, they saw that each shape was, in fact, a figure, a man or woman in ragged, antique armor, standing perfectly still, face upturned, mouth slightly open, as though singing a silent hymn.“
Chapter 194: The sorcereress Advice:
“Everything.” Melissa’s fingers brushed the stone. “The things I have learned. The bargains I have made. The people I have wronged.” She paused. “I told her about you, last year. That I had heard you were doing well. That the Hand had made you First Voice.”“What did she say?”“Nothing. She never does.” A faint, wistful smile. “But the flowers bloomed. They have never bloomed so fully.”Elvyn looked down at the white blossoms, glowing softly in the mist, and her throat tightened. “Perhaps she was pleased.”“Perhaps.”“Perhaps she wanted you to know.”“I have no way of knowing.” Melissa rose, brushing the moss from her knees. “But it comforts me to think so.”She bowed her head, and for a long moment she stood motionless before the stone, lips moving silently. The mist glowed brighter around her, and the faint, whispering hum of the ghostly host rose and fell, like wind in distant pines. Then she stepped back, retrieved her staff, and turned to the soldiers, who had stood throughout in
Chapter 195: The Uprising:
“That is not the same.”“It is better.”“Perhaps.” Melissa’s mouth twitched. “Fear is easier to manage than affection.”“You have never wanted affection.”“I wanted it once.” The words came out so quietly that Elvyn almost missed them. “A long time ago.”“And now?”“Now I want results.” Melissa drained her cup. “Tell me what they are like. The ones I will meet.”Elvyn thought for a moment. “Lord Darius is clever, ruthless, and very afraid. He hides it well, but he cannot stand to lose. His nephew terrifies him, though he would never admit it.”“And Varek?”“Varek is his shadow. Smarter than he seems. Loyal to Darius, but more loyal to the Hand. If it came to a choice, he would sacrifice his lord without hesitation.”“Useful.”“Dangerous.”“The two are often the same.” Melissa set down her cup. “And the Hand’s representatives?”“Cold. Careful. They do not smile. They watch.” Elvyn shuddered. “I have never felt comfortable around them.”“Why do you serve them?”“Because I have nowhere e
Chapter 196: The warriors chants:
“I see that.” Her eyes narrowed. “The outer wall is new. And the watchtowers. He fears an attack.”“He fears one man.”“The boy.”“Yes.”“Then he is wiser than he looks.” Melissa urged her horse forward. “Come. I wish to see what else he has built.”They descended the long slope toward the city, and as the walls grew larger, the soldiers’ faces grew tighter. The Pale Scribes stood watch along every rampart, grey-cloaked figures with long spears, their faces hidden beneath pale hoods. Banners of Lord Darius’s house, black on gold, hung from every tower, snapping in the wind.“Ready your colors,” Brannock called softly. “Straighten your backs. Look like soldiers.”The men obeyed, sitting taller, polishing their buckles with their sleeves. Even Tavish, pale and hoarse, managed to square his shoulders. Doran fumbled with his badge, pinning it more firmly to his tunic, his hands trembling.“Do not let them see you are afraid,” Elvyn said. “Fear invites questions.”“Yes, my lady.”“And reme
Chapter 197: The Price of a Joke:
The golden sword caught the afternoon light and threw a bright, trembling smear of it across the war room’s stone walls. Lord Darius turned the blade slowly in his hand, admiring the runes etched along its edge, and for the first time in many days, something close to hope warmed the cold calculation in his dark eyes.“Sheathe it, my lord,” Varek said dryly from his seat. “You are making the commanders nervous.”“Let them be nervous.” Darius slid the sword back into its jeweled scabbard with a long, satisfied hiss. “Nervous men listen more carefully. And I intend for them to listen very carefully indeed when she arrives.”“If she arrives,” said the stooped, parchment-faced elder of the Hand, folding his long fingers on the table. “The trumpets say Elvyn has returned. They do not say she has brought her sister.”“The messenger said she was not alone.”“Which could mean anything. A soldier. A servant. A stray dog that followed the column.”“Your optimism warms my heart,” Darius said.“I
Chapter 198: The warriors cry:
By the time the great hall was filled, the afternoon had begun to turn toward evening. Long shafts of amber light slanted through the high arched windows, picking out the gilt on the vaulted ceiling and the pale marble of the soaring pillars that marched down either side of the chamber in two stately rows. Hundreds of nobles, commanders, guild-masters, and officials stood in whispering clusters along the walls, resplendent in their finest silks and armor. At the far end of the hall, on a raised dais, stood a great carved chair of black oak and gold, with smaller seats arranged on either side.Darius took the central chair. Varek sat at his right hand, the gaunt Hand representative at his left. Behind them, in a loose semicircle, stood the elders of the Nameless Nation, a dozen figures in dark, high-collared robes, their faces solemn, their eyes sharp. Among them was the heavyset, grey-bearded man who had spoken of riots a few nights before, and beside him, shifting uneasily on his fee
Chapter 199: The void of voices:
“If I may be frank. The Hand has invested heavily in this campaign. If the Sorceress Melissa fails, if she is unable or unwilling to produce the results we require, there will be consequences. For you. For Varek. For everyone in this chamber.”“I am aware.”“I merely wish to be certain that you understand.”“I understand perfectly.” Darius’s voice was cool. “Failure is not an option. We have two hundred thousand reasons to believe in her success.”“Gold does not guarantee loyalty.”“Nothing does. But gold makes it more likely.” Darius leaned back in his chair. “Besides, you have heard Elvyn’s report. The boy has a power none of us can match. If anyone can stop him, it will be someone who understands the clover bloodline better than he does.”“And she does?”“She has studied it for twenty years.”“Theory is not practice.”“Then we shall see what she has learned.” Darius’s eyes glittered. “I will say this, elder. When the sorceress returns from the island, she will not come empty-handed
Chapter 200: The Winds of the artefact:
The ten soldiers had dismounted behind them, handing their reins to waiting grooms, and now stood in a stiff, nervous line, staring up at the great arched doors. Brannock’s scar gleamed pale in the afternoon light. Doran was visibly sweating. Tavish, hoarse and bruised, kept his eyes fixed on his boots.“Sorceress,” Brannock said hesitantly. “Shall we escort you inside?”“No.”“My lady, protocol—”“I will go in with my sister. The rest of you wait here.” She glanced at them, and every man bowed his head. “You have done what was required. Rest. Eat. Do not wander.”“Yes, Sorceress.”“And if anyone asks you what happened in my valley, you will say nothing.”“Nothing at all, Sorceress.”“Good.” She turned and mounted the palace steps, her gown trailing behind her, her staff clicking softly against the stone.Elvyn followed a pace behind, her face tight with tension. At the top of the steps, two guards in black and gold livery stood at attention before the great doors. Their eyes widened
