CHAPTER 11
A couple of minutes earlier.Caleb came to the drinks table, and he put the plate down.“Hey, waiter,” a person called him over.Caleb looked over his shoulder and saw Jake Wallace, the uncle of Mike. He was also the director of the operations department of the company. In short, he was a key figure.“Bring over a bottle and pour us all,” Jake ordered. Jake had little to no hair on his head, so he always wore a wig. There were many times when employees secretly laughed at him and were demoted because of it. One fellow even got fired.Caleb took a 2 liter glass bottle over and poured wine to Jake and the four guests who were with him, one of whom was Mike himself. As he was pouring wine to Mike, Mike moved the glass up just a little so that it hit the bottle, and the wine spilled. It fell right on Jake’s boot.“What the hell?” Jake gave his wine glass to Mike and then went for a swift slap.Caleb reflexively raised his hands to defend himself.Jake’s hand struck the hard wine bottle.T
CHAPTER 12
Caleb did not walk like a conqueror. Far from it.There was no swagger, no theatrical confidence.Only calm. And beneath that calm, something gentler—relief, perhaps, or the quiet satisfaction of a man who had survived a long winter. He shook Harvey’s hand and said, “It’s an honor to meet you, sir.”“The honor is mine,” Harvey replied, then leaned closer, his voice lowering. “We look forward to your contribution to Grand Little Interiors… and to Dream Phantom investments.”Caleb’s smile remained soft and pleasant. He was unhurried in his body language, partly owing to the system’s gift.He was not surprised by Harvey’s words. He had already expected this much.He was someone who had worked his butt off for many years and was unable to get promoted due to his personal clash with the chairman, but now, he got promoted to the Chief Designer’s post, which was only second to the CEO.Simultaneously, the reason Phantom Dream investments chose him had more to do with his 20 percent stake in t
CHAPTER 13
After Caleb finished talking, Edward took the mic and addressed the crowd, “Some of you might not know this, but Caleb has been working in my company for more than five years, and he once told me to not promote him because he wanted to stay as a low-level employee. In fact, he rejected the promotion multiple times back in the day.”Everybody started chattering about Caleb, with surprise painted on their faces.Rita, however, had a frown on her face because only she knew that her dad was lying through his teeth just to save himself from any possible future embarrassment.Caleb, on the other hand, was just as surprised as the crowd. He never expected Edward to put all the blame on him. This once again reminded Caleb just how selfish and cruel Edward could be.Caleb could not resist when Edward put his arm around Caleb’s shoulder and talked some more.Caleb felt his hatred for Edward becoming fresh and bubbling all over again, but he could smile for the cameras right now.Caleb became th
CHAPTER 14
The party ended around nine at night.Mercy wanted to drop Caleb at his apartment, but she received an important call, so she had to leave urgently.Sherry, who wanted to expose the relationship between Mercy and Caleb, was not able to do anything but stay out of Caleb’s sight for now.Mike was also nowhere to be seen. The other employees of Grand Little Interiors approached Caleb and were all praises. Their loyalty changed direction with the draft. Every passing wind rewrote their faces.Caleb was not interested in talking with them. He did not let their praises get to his head and quietly left.He saw Rita, Faye and some other girls going on a boat and laughing in the distance.“I want to ride a boat one day and enjoy like them with a girl’s arm around my arm,” Caleb thought. He then left the convention center and was walking down the busy road.He saw a couple of lovers kissing across the road after she accepted his proposal. The time when Caleb had proposed to Rita came to his min
CHAPTER 15
Caleb’s eyes were clearly able to see the attacks from the four men coming at him.He instinctively moved back and dodged the first baseball bat that came swinging at him.But he was neither fast nor flexible enough to avoid the successive attacks from the other three men.The baseball bats smashed into his ribs, shoulder and the arm.The pain was indescribable. He tried to move. He really TRIED.But his body wouldn’t listen.Fat and fear anchored him in place. His mind could see the bat swinging through the air, but his body buffered like slow internet.Another bat struck his thigh.Pain flared up his hip like a spark of white-hot lightning.“Argh!” He cried, his spit flying out. His leg buckled, and he hit the ground hard, palms slapping concrete.Laughter followed. Not loud. Casual. Like this was expected. There was no anger in their laughter but mockery. This was a game for them.Another bat cracked against Caleb’s spine and pushed him to the ground.Caleb let out a broken gasp.H
CHAPTER 16
The next morning.Caleb woke up and found himself completely free of pain. His thigh pain was gone, and the bruises also healed.“Is this the effect of sleep optimization? The recovery is this fast? It’s much better than I expected.”He was able to walk without any discomfort in his leg, and this boosted his mood very much.He stood before the mirror, staring at his big belly, which looked like a semi-pot. He lifted it up and down. He slapped it a few times.“If I remove all this fat and water… will I become worthy?” he wondered. “Is becoming attractive the same as becoming worthy?”He thought about it for a while and sighed. “In any case, it’s better to be fit than fat,” he threw on an old shirt and went for a walk.Walking three kilometers took him over forty minutes. With the system’s guidance, and with his body awareness skill, he was able to do warm up exercises.Initially, he trie

“He’s here. We’ll deal with him,” one of the four men talked on the mobile and ended the call. Was he talking to Mike?“Mr. Mike wants to know why you didn’t come to work today,” one of them asked.“I was exercising,” Caleb replied without any delay.“Pfft, look at this guy, trying to crack jokes,” one of them stepped forward. “I guess the beating yesterday wasn’t enough.”While the other three in the back leaned comfortably against the railing of the apartment, the fourth guy approached Caleb with a lazy, cocky smile.Caleb’s heart sped up, not from fear of the opponent but from the fear of losing.“Activate Clinch Combat Mode…”[Clinch Combat Mode Activated!]He took a deep breath and stood calm as held breath. The opponent swung early, eager to repeat history.Caleb didn’t dodge wide this time.He stepped in.The bat glanced off Caleb’s raised forearm.Caleb leaned, crashing his weight forward, banging into the opponent shoulder-first.The impact drove the air out of the guy’s ches
CHAPTER 18
The next day.Caleb woke up at 5 AM.He finished his daily dirt mission in four hours. He arrived at the company sharply at 10 in the morning, driving his old toyota corolla. When he was just a regular employee, he had to report sharply before nine o’clock. Sometimes, even earlier if work demanded it.However, the timings were flexible for the Chief Designer. As Caleb entered the building, the guard stood and greeted him for the first time since he was posted at the entrance.Caleb stopped and briefly nodded as a greeting and then entered the building. The guard smiled in surprise because he never received such a response from other employees. And he felt a bit of shame for not greeting Caleb before. As Caleb entered the hall, every employee quickly got up from their seats. All except for Mike.Even Sherry got up but Mike didn’t.Caleb stopped at Sherry’s desk and glanced at her. “Did you eat breakfast?”Sherry’s heart jumped into her throat when she heard that question. “I-I-I…” She
CHAPTER 19
“In the past, I would shit my pants to take a leave, but now, they can’t yell at me after I took a leave unannounced. It really feels great to see Edward smiling even when I’m troubling him, haha. This joy… even a thousand dollars can’t bring this happiness!”Caleb went to his private room, which was assigned for the Chief Designer. This was ten times bigger than his previous cubicle where he had worked for almost sixty months. All his items were neatly arranged on the desk.“It took me so long to get here. If not for Dreamie, I wouldn’t have gotten this opportunity. I will build my portfolio from this office,” Caleb muttered under his breath.Knock knock.Andy entered the room and showered a pleasant smile.“I’ve shortlisted some candidates for the interviews,” Andy put a file on the desk. “Please finalize the list.”It felt quite new and refreshing to Caleb. Getting treated with respect by the coldest HR manager.“Also, decide on whom we should fire,” Andy said.“Do we have to fire?
CHAPTER 20
Thirty minutes later, Caleb returned to his office. He saw an email marked URGENT – HR COMPLIANCE landing in his inbox: Please review and sign the revised contractor approval form before 3 PM today. Delay will be noted.Attached was a document with dense legal language. Buried clauses. Cross-references. A minefield, to say the least.Caleb scrolled through the document slowly and smiled.“He wants me to authorize an outside consultant without proper clearance. This is a breach of protocol, isn’t it? If I sign this, it could end me. So, all the unnecessary emails you sent since morning…. is for me to take the bait on this. You couldn’t wait even a day, could you, Andy?”Instead of signing it, Caleb replied with three emails. The first email was to the Finance department, asking whether Phantom Dream’s shareholder authority overrides contractor caps or not.The second email was to the Legal team, requesting clarification on Clause 14B, specifically on who drafted it.The third email was
